*Sigh* Wednesday is trending again, which means that the kiddos out there are gonna start drama again. Please just stop; this is one of the reason why the show was called cringe a year ago and people left the fandom.
1- You have the right to ship Wyler et Wavier. This is your opinion, your preference and I respect it. So why, mainly Wavier shippers, are suddenly back at attacking Wenclair shippers for no reason at all on Tumblr, Twitter and basically every single social media? What are you, 12? Is this hard to respect people's opinions???
2- Stop shipping Jenna and Emma. I'm almost certain this is the reason why we can't tag Emma on Instagram anymore. Ever since the Chappell Roan videos got out, a lot of people have made weird comments saying that they kissed or that they were on a date. Just stop. Stop shipping real people, or do it but silently. All of this is making them very uncomfortable and it's just direspectful to assume things like that. We just got them back, don't make Jenna delete Instagram again and make Emma disappear from it once again.
This just needed to be said. Just be respectful, it's not that fucking hard, goddamit. And when I mean respectful, I mean towards the fans AND the actors. Don't make Wednesday cringe again. Stop being kids and attacking other fans for absolutely no reason because you can't accept the fact that they don't ship your ship. And stop using the fucking Wenclair hashtag to say trash about them, this is getting annoying.
This is also addressed to, like me, Wenclair shippers. You should respect Wyler and Wavier shippers as well; don't give the bad example. Everyone is free to ship the characters they want, and this without any drama or violence. Just be kind to each others, it's not that hard.
Thank you for reading this. If you disagree, then just shut the fuck up because I don't have time to lose arguing with immature people on social media. I'm writing this as a reminder to respect Jenna and Emma and the fans, that's all. Y'all seriously needed a reminder.
Also, don't make Tumblr toxic. I already left Instagram and Twitter because people in here are the most toxic ever, I always loved Tumblr because people were nice, but for a week mad Wavier shippers started posting and insulting which is extremely annoying. Oh, and I also had to turn off my anonymous asks because I got very weird questions from probably bots. Don't make this app bad too, it's basically the only good one left with Pinterest.
I suppose that's all. Goodnight. And don't fucking come at me for saying this, because everything I said in here is true and I am just trying to remind people to be nice, not cause any more drama. If you say something mean here, you will be blocked immediately because, as I said, I don't have time to lose arguing with kids who can't respect an opinion.
Goodnight šŸ¤ā˜®ļø

Hi ! I saw ur tags on a previous post where you say that spirituality was a bad experience for you. Could you elaborate on that if ur comfortable ? My mother is extremely spiritual and sometimes i feel that its alienating her from the world and maybe doing her more bad than good. I cant really articulate it very well, so if ur open to share ur experience id appreciate it a lot ! Thanks
This is a sweet message, thank you.
I donā€™t know how familiar you are with my post history but I have talked a lot about how spirituality destroyed my relationship with causality.
In short, if you believe that ā€˜everything happens for a reasonā€™, if you believe that you have a spiritual purpose and life is a series of tests, if you believe that the universe is sending you signs telling you what is ā€˜meant to beā€™ - all of this changes your relationship with your perception of stimulus. Your actions cease to become meaningful for the direct impact they have on you, your environment and other people - instead they only have ā€˜greater meaningā€™ through their relationship with the spiritual. There becomes this layer of spiritual ā€˜realnessā€™ superimposed onto reality itself, resulting in intense emotional experiences and a dissociation from the material world.
This is the most clear in the attitudes of, say, Christians, who believe that our reality on earth, and all morality therein, is secondary to the ā€˜trueā€™ reality of life after death. I have heard spiritual/religious people say that they give money to homeless people ā€˜to give back to godā€™ - this is a perfect example of that disconnect, because here the actual impact said action has on a real human being - with real thoughts and feelings - is secondary to some symbolic gesture to god/ā€˜the universeā€™. I was fortunate in that Iā€™m a highly moral person regardless, but I still internalised this idea of viewing myself and others as props.
Where this truly metastasised into something pathological for my psyche was in my relationship with obligation and the symbolic. As an ex ā€˜gifted kidā€™, I was very used to doing things specifically for an external reward. This this spiritual idea sat very comfortably in my mind: I approached life as if it were a classroom, achieving things to receive positive results - only in the sense that said positive results were ā€˜proofā€™ that I did the correct thing. Choosing the right career, for example, was less about its material affect on me and my life, and rather about proving I was on the right ā€˜pathā€™ in life. I was always outside of myself, continuously feeling obligated to some mysterious higher power, processing any and all stimulus through a lens of reward/punishment, processing my life in terms of narrative: the symbolic ā€˜meaningā€™ was always more real to me than reality itself. And that disconnect still affects me to this day: Iā€™m still deconstructing how my brain was conditioned to have an entirely opposite approach to causality, where I had to wait for things to be ā€˜rightā€™ before I could justify being a subjective human being.
Spirituality creates a sort of paradoxical narcissism: I am important in the sense that I have a special relationship with the universe, that twists the entirety of reality to give me lessons, rewards and signs; but also I am so fundamentally insignificant that my happiness and satisfaction in living is only valuable insofar as it proves that Iā€™m doing my part and living ā€˜correctlyā€™, according to entirely unknown and ever-changing rules communicated to me cryptically from a universe which apparently sees fit to punish me because I wasnā€™t nice in the correct way one time. The safety you feel from having the universe ā€˜watching over youā€™ is ultimately a sham: your natural subjectivity, pattern-matching and human ingenuity is stolen from you, your achievements arenā€™t your own, and you believe that certain entirely harmless things you want arenā€™t ā€˜supposed to happenā€™ - imagine, if you will, believing after a bit of bad luck in trying to find a venue that youā€™re not ā€˜supposedā€™ to have a 70th birthday party. I donā€™t have to imagine that, because I have seen it with my own eyes.
The comfort I got from the spiritual, the symbolic, the narrative made me a fragile and existentially terrified person. Who needs problem-solving when all you need to do is wait for the next sign from the universe? Who needs personal responsibility or maturity when I can always defer to the judgment of a higher power? Spiritually is a form of psychological death; a destruction of the selfhood. My maturity and ability to understand the world and trust my perceptions and take responsibility and all sorts of stuff like that came from dropping this idea that I ā€˜was put on this Earth to learn lessonsā€™. Instead, I have taken my perceptions away from this external, almost 3rd-person view of myself, and instead returned back into owning and embodying my perceptions as my own; in short, I am now embracing my subjective personhood, recognising that I generate meaning within my mind, and that I get to decide what I value based on the raw magical power of human empathy. This is the reality I live in, and itā€™s scary and lonely but much more grounding to truly embrace that.

thoughts on how we treat children while being kind to ourselves
late last night, i reblogged a post about being kind to kids and added some tags that were meant in kind of a jokey way, but were snarky. i'll own it. i was tired, i was just speaking off the cuff, and i didn't think anything of it. but it got a few notes from followers and non followers alike in the morning, so i went and looked at the reblogs, as i sometimes do. and oh boy. oh boy, i have some things to say.
the original point i was trying to make, and didn't make particularly well, is that i feel like there's this rhetoric pushed by a certain portion of the population that being nice to kids means being indulgent and sweet and constantly patient. for a lot of us, that's just not possible. we don't have the bandwidth, we've constructed our lives to be mostly child free, we didn't grow up around kids. the notion of putting yourself in a kid's shoes can be tough for people who have difficulty relating to the experiences of others, period. there is a whole host of reasons why relating to children and extending extreme amounts of empathy toward them is challenging to some folks.
in the notes of that post, there are people calling the childfree movement evil (and, let's be real, calling women who don't want to have children and/or who don't care for them evil by extension). of course, i don't approve of sections of the childfree movement who go around being nasty to kids! that's bad news bears! kids are people! obviously! but i've worked with children extensively and they can be great, but they're also trying and exhausting, and i couldn't do that 24/7. it's disheartening to have what is a nuanced issue about the comfort of a child vs the comfort of an adult reduced to "you have to be nice to kids always and never get angry at them and always be patient or you're the worst person alive and will damage them for life if you yell at them once!!!"
it would be really great, as a childfree person, if i had been told a while ago, instead of the black and white narrative, something like this: "you don't have to love children or even like them. being just polite and somewhat pleasant is enough. try and field their questions and curiosity if you can, but if it's too much for you, then ask where their parents or guardians are. there can be compromise. you can be kind to kids while being kind and true to yourself. disliking kids in no way makes you a bad person -- your thoughts are not crimes. they are your own. not saying that thought to the kid, even though sometimes you want to, is what makes you the true adult, and even better than you already are.

āœØ artist interview āœØ
i was tagged by @you-are-so-much-better-than-that @mikhailoisbaby and @deathclassic to do this artist interview that chrissy whipped up off of the popular fic writer one! thanks for the tag even if i feel like a grand ol' imposter šŸ˜…
1. Do you post on Ao3? If so, how many works do you have on AO3? If not, where do you post? i do! i didn't before, but i was bullied by tumblr into doing so after they took down the art for "cinematic" lmao! then the pals encouraged me to upload the rest! i have 4 works: cinematic, kinktober, gallacrafts, and original art.
2. What is your total art count? 83! (including the zine stickers/tattoos)
3. What are your top 5 pieces by likes/kudos? i used the helpful stats website @suzy-queued suggested!
Tumblr media
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? yes! i still think it's insane when people choose to leave nice comments, so i try my best to respond!
5. What is your current fandom, and what was the first fandom you drew for? shameless, hi. if we're talking about art that i've shared, then it's also shameless. but the first one just for fun was harry potter (yeaaa yeaaa šŸ™„)
6. Have you ever received hate on any art? yep lol
7. Whatā€™s a fandom/ship you havenā€™t drawn for yet but want to? i guess the true answer is none. however, i get the urge to draw every time i watch something that i end up loving. recently i've wanted to draw for young royals and stranger things, but i never ended up doing anything. i would also be too shy to post šŸ˜…
8. Whatā€™s your all-time favorite ship? i've had many, but based on impact and inspiration i'd have to go with ian and mickey šŸ’™
9. Do you draw outside of fandom? i do!! it's my favorite hobby! the only difference is that outside of this space i usually just sketch. so it's very different than what i share here.
10. Whatā€™s the an art piece youā€™ve drawn that came out completely differently than you expected? oh probably this one! it changed quite a bit and was originally drawn flipped around. i think it tells a different story depending on which way you look at it!
Tumblr media
11. Do you draw smut? yes! the teasing kind. the "what's that hand doing?!" kind lmao
12. Have you ever had any of your art stolen or copied? not that i know of!
13. Have you ever collaborated on a piece? yea! i've collabed on art for fics with @whatwouldmickeydo and @metalheadmickey and on the zine and timeline with @you-are-so-much-better-than-that šŸ„°
14. Whatā€™s an idea you have that you have yet to draw? omg i have an entire list of ideas that just exist and may never come to life lol! they range from extreme fluff to absolute filth... my notes app: -kiss on the cheek/scrunchy face -mickey's head hanging off bed/mouth open/ian's hand wrapped around the nape of his neck -holding hands at the alibi alsdkfjlk
15. What are your drawing strengths? i would say adding details and tying the story i'm trying to convey together. and i like to think that i'm ok at giving them that tender and in love feel no matter the situation.
16. What are your drawing weaknesses? all of it? haha proportions and certain angles are really hard for me. hands and noses yikes! i am also terrible at drawing from memory. i usually draw with about 20 references pulled up on my laptop. like, i am the bozo googling "table". 17. Whatā€™s your favorite art piece youā€™ve drawn? it's gotta be the roadtrip one! but i also really really love this one:
Tumblr media
18. What is one thing youā€™d like to tell people about your art that they might not know? i love adding/repeating little details that no one would really notice unless you're zooming all the way in or seeing a few pieces as a set. i built a color palette very early on that has stayed consistent throughout. i play a lot with blues and greens as a motif. and uh i'm still learning! everyday! with every single one!
19. What inspires or motivates you to create for fandom? i genuinely love doing it! i also love a prompt, that's why i started all of this with gallacrafts. and i just really love putting them in situations i want to see them in and drawing them stupidly in love!
but, i also hoard unhinged tags in my cheeks like a chipmunk lmao every series i've done was born from people screaming a version of "YOU'RE INSANE" at me šŸ˜‚
20. And finally, can you describe your process a little? Do you have a favourite place to draw? Do you play something in the background? Do you do research or just go for it? Give us a little insight. i usually draw on the couch, hunched over like a shrimp. iā€™m normally up really late (i see 3am too often) and thatā€™s when i get most of my work done. i typically watch something i've seen before so that i don't have to fully pay attention or i'll listen to music. i sketch a rough draft of what i want the final piece to end up looking like, then i do a shit ton of research and pull up a stupid amount of references. i have a really creepy pinterest board full of body parts lol! then i fight for my life and rage until the line work is fully done. after that, itā€™s smooth sailing with coloring and shading šŸ˜Œ
i'm feeling a little tag shy, but i'll tag @gallawitchxx @doodlevich @y0itsbri and @grumpymickmilk if you want to play! if not i'm just giving you some flowers šŸ’

i really appreciate you for making niche art for certain experiences, i miss the days of hyperspecific aus that were entirely self indulgent. its also nice to see both age regression and mental health displayed unsanitized, and its also great to see other people find solace in it too. thank you!
another ask to go in my "favorite ask" pile... I have a lot of thoughts about this that I won't go into in GREAT detail but one thing I've noticed is that when artists are put under a spotlight and expected to "perform", their artistic muses tend to sway more towards what they percieve the crowds as wanting...? what's "popular"? or they start overanalyzing their audience's reactions to whatever they make/are making, whether it be unconscious or not, especially if art is their profession. this just leads to a lot of artblock and frustration, I think, in addition to insecurity when one post doesn't perform as well as another, etc...
I did not expect to become a ""popular"" fandom artist in the slightest. I made this blog with the goal in mind to post obscure art in hopes of finding a few friends who are into the same specific thematic content I am (which WORKED btw. I made ALL of my close friends immediately after posting the OG hospital dirk photoset). I had no expectations of lots of notes or whatever, which I hope doesn't sound snooty... like, I LOVE when you guys get excited over the stuff I post and write really long tags about it. I am just very detached from fandom at large and have no interest in making "popular" content. mentally, I guess, it helps that I'm a hobby artist and don't do this for a living, i.e., I don't have to fear losing followers from going down very specific rabbit holes, but I've discovered that... people love this? I get customers asking for the weirdest things and I love to draw all of it (commissions ARE still open btw...wink). it's very fulfilling and extremely fun. there is definitely a demand. I gained followers more rapidly the week after posting hospital dirk than any other period of time in the three months I've had this blog.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I've NOTICED this trend of homogenized fandom content and... just assumed that people were fine with it? because it kept happening. WHICH I'm realizing isn't true. I haven't been involved in fandom for a very long time but I'm kind of really happy to be here right now because asks like this make my day. LIVE YOUR DREAMS!!!

Hi<3 I wanted to ask you if new directions were on tumblr, how do you think you would interact with them? And what do you think their blogs would be about?
Oooh I love this question!! Tysm for the askšŸ„°šŸ’—
Santana: Mutuals. It was basically confirmed in canon that this girl had a tumblr with her comment about her having a favorite ā€˜Rizzoli & Islesā€™ blog.. if that doesnā€™t scream a tumblr lesbian idk what does lol!! Her entire blog would mainly be devoted to sapphic ships that she would sob about in the tags (think overuse of emojis and keyboard smashes)! She would have a pretty decent following and get quite a few asks where she would give headcanons and meta on her favorite ships. She also wouldnā€™t tell a soul that sheā€™s on there but Brittany would find out and lovingly tease her about it.
Tina: I follow her but she doesnā€™t follow me. She would be on tumblr constantly! She would have one of those super popular multifandom blogs that makes the most crisp gifs and has hundreds of requests waiting in her inbox. At first youā€™d be a bit intimidated by her until you realize she is the sweetest and is always super nice about giving tips and resources for gif making!
Sam: I donā€™t follow him but he follows me. His tumblr would consist of almost 100% memes with no organization/tagging system. Instead of tags, he would leave comments under posts like ā€œwoah this is sick dude šŸ¤©ā€ or ā€œnice!!! šŸ‘ā€ which would in turn make a good amount of people block him because they would think heā€™s some bot or sarcastic troll when in reality they are always genuine comments. He would be the king of spam reblogging to the point that if you did follow him he would overwhelm your dash. Though, every once and awhile there would be a very detailed & coherent post by him about ā€˜True Jackson, VPā€™ with links to a petition to get it renewed/rebooted.
Blaine: Mutuals. You just know he would make the best tumblr mutual! He would definitely be that one mutual that you can always count on to like and reblog your content and he would leave the most thoughtful tags. His blog would be a variety of all his interests (he originally tried to have separate side blogs but it was too much for him to keep up with!) but itā€™s extremely well organized and mainly runs on a queue.
Kurt: I follow him but he doesnā€™t follow me. His tumblr would be very curated and definitely fit a certain aesthetic. I picture it mostly consisting of reblogs of fashion, films, art, food, etc. But multiple times a week he would post blank text posts with super long rants in the tags with a lot of cussing and the last tag would be #delete later.
Brittany: Mutuals. Everything she posts would be super cheerful & colorful (envision loads of rainbows & cats). She is known for sending asks since she absolutely loves sending her mutuals the most offbeat questions. You can also always rely on her if youā€™re having a bad day to send you a random quote or fact that will make you smile.
Mike: Mutuals. He would truly have the most chill blog and reblog anything that catches his eye but not in a way where it overloads your dash. He also is someone who follows back almost everyone who follows him and sends a lot of kind asks & leaves nice tags on your original content. He would never get involved in any fandom drama and would only have one filtered tag which is ā€˜Channing Tatumā€™.
Puck: Mutuals (mostly for entertainment purposes on my end). Heā€™d be the one to act like heā€™s never even heard of tumblr but secretly runs his own fic blog mainly for the soap opera he compulsively watches with his mom & sister. He also occasionally enjoys posting snippets of the various screenplays heā€™s working on. He prides himself on staying anonymous so he uses a pen name and changes the names of everyone he writes about but does an awful job at picking out new names (changes Puck to Huck, Finn to Binn, etc)!
Finn: Neither one of us follows one another. Actually didnā€™t know what tumblr was until he saw the app on Puckā€™s phone and noticed him spending a lot of time on it so he got curious. Months later he still has no clue on what the point of tumblr is and has pretty much given up on trying to properly use it. He has a few text posts screaming into the void but they have no engagement. Though he did somehow link his instagram so that still updates.
Mercedes: Mutuals. Her tumblr consists mainly of reblogs for her favorite celebrities, tv shows, & movies. She also has gotten into the habit of live blogging for a few of her top shows and her commentary is so good that you wouldnā€™t dare to unfollow her or filter her tags for it, even for the shows you didnā€™t have any interest in previously. Sheā€™s the mutual that has such great taste that you find her continuing to influence what media you want to consume next!
Quinn: Mutuals. Her blog is a mix of literature, art, philosophy etc which does make it have an overall pretty ā€œclassyā€ feel but the vast majority of it is also just very, very, very, gay.. to the point where half of what she reblogs is of women kissing/being affectionate with one another. She also eventually dabbles in writing some femslash & itā€™s very good stuffā€¦
Artie: Neither one of us follows one another. Has a decent following due to his film reviews (he also blocks anyone who disagrees with any of his opinions). Heā€™s also heavily involved in various popular fandoms like Star Wars and Marvel which leads to him getting into some very intense discourse which results in more blocking.
Rachel: Mutuals (on thin ice). Posts super nice aesthetics & moodboards. Though unfortunately, she would be that tumblr mutual who gets into heated debates with anons constantly and is such an easy target because she canā€™t recognize when people are trolling her so she takes the bait every time. But, fairly often it does get to the point where she actually ends up exhausting the anons with her long written responses.

Annabeth is a good person, but not a nice or pleasant one,IMO.
YES.
Thatā€™s it. Thatā€™s the post. Pack it up everybody, we just cracked the case and cleared up one of the most compelling fights in the PJO fandom since forever. Good job everybody, clap it out and thereā€™s the door! Donā€™t forget ordering the drinks at Starbucks, Mitch! Theyā€™re on me!
Okay, but on a more serious note: YES. YES EXACTLY.
And before some of you roll your eyes or grab your pitchforks ā€“ put your biases aside and hear me out for once. I like Annabeth. Sheā€™s my in my top three characters only second to Percy himself. I love Percabeth. Itā€™s my favorite ship in the entire series and to be frank, the only ship that I care about PJO wise. Hell, I spend my time creating my own headcanons or writing my own fanfics with Percabeth being the star in them.
But that is not to say that Iā€™m unable to see how certain things have developed over the years or where they stand now in regard to Annabeth. Iā€™m not here to ignore things that have been said and/or done due to or in the name of Annabeth and Iā€™m not here to vilify anyone that doesnā€™t like her. And Iā€™m here to admit that Iā€™m guilty of some of the things that may be addressed in this meta essay that you will read in just a second. However, I try my best to assure you, that Iā€™m for once able to recognize my own bias.
Warning: a monster essay lies right upon you.
This should count as a paper of its own.
Back to the statement on top: I would go out even further to reframe your claim, anon:
Annabeth Chase is a good character but not a nice or pleasant person.
Annabeth is a wonderful character but she isnā€™t a nice one. Or at least not nice to everyone. She is (construction wise if I dare say) the best character out of the series. She has her positive traits (sheā€™s caring, sheā€™s emotional, sheā€™s encouraged and volunteers, she fights for what she believes in, she forgives (even if doing so begrudgingly)) but she also has her negative traits (sheā€™s stubborn, sheā€™s brash, changing her mind takes forever, she is prejudiced, she baits others). That balances things out. She is branded as the intelligent kid but does irrational things (like Iā€™ve just said a) sheā€™s a kid and b) sheā€™s not a robot). She should probably know better, but we all make mistakes and hopefully grow and learn from them. The clouds in the sky do blur and cover our visions sometimes.
Annabeth had clashes with other characters or was about to have fights due to her stubbornness or jealousy (Rachel, Reyna, etc.) and has of course her problems with the mortal world and her family but she also found new friends, some things cleared up throughout the narration and she was/is quite popular in Camp Half-Blood.
The thing is: she doesnā€™t have to be nice or pleasant (as a character). Or at least not all the time. Her character is humanized. That is what or who she is. Human. She does stand out as a character, not just because sheā€™s the (future) love interest. She feels like someone you could meet in real life and either adore from the top to the bottom or declare as your biggest enemy. And thatā€™s totally okay if you lean either way ā€“ liking or disliking her. Or even feeling indifferent about her. Also great!
To say that she has been the best character that Riordan has crafted is easy to say, because she has been sculpted after Riordanā€™s wife. He had a model he could rub some of real-life events or traits on. Thatā€™s not the problem. The problem truly doesnā€™t lie on Riordanā€™s side for the most part for once.
The problem is inherently on the fandomā€™s side. What the fandom does, how it acts and how it treats Annabeth as a character is the problem. The problems vary but itā€™s mostly the mischaracterization of Annabeth, starting fights and fan/ship wars, internalized misogyny (in some cases) and how some of the Annabeth stans lash out (ha, got firsthand experience in that field among many of my friends and mutuals!). There is a reason why many people are wary of people that have Annabeth or Percabeth related URLs.
The fact that we see Annabeth mostly through Percyā€™s lens and (until the Heroes of Olympus saga hits) we never really see her in chill everyday situations is essentially Riordan leaving the back door of the house open, ready for all of you asshats to rob his mansion in Boston. Because a frame on a character means that we donā€™t get to see the character in its entirety (unlike we do with Percy in PJO for the most part). That means a bunch of stuff is left open for interpretation which is the reason why Annabeth gets so many polarized headcanon and opinions tossed around. I think that is one of the true appeals of Annabeth. You can add on stuff and it necessarily doesnā€™t have to contradict itself.
We have people calling her abusive due to a (n admittedly stupid and unnecessary) judo flip and we have people that act like sheā€™s never done anything wrong. People sorta use this excuse to form and shape Annabeth however they want and distort her characterization.
People in the fandom act like Annabeth is some weird prized possession. We perceive Annabeth mostly through the eyes of others (Percy, Apollo, etc.) and when we had some sort of insight in her ways (MOA, HOH) it feltā€¦ weird? Somewhat? Like Riordan left two bullet points of her characterization and told the ghostwriter: aight, fuck it up, gringo, see you on Tuesday and greet Fred the next time you see him for me.Ā
There have been many posts lately (by Tharini, Simi, Sawasawako, Jewishpercy and Annie I believe?) that HOO Percabeth felt weird. That they felt weirdly constructed, that there was no conflict, no growth. It felt stagnating, like weā€™re turning back. We had five books prior where we had Annabeth and Percy slowly shifting from disliking to liking and crushing each other. True development. And when we finally got the cake it feltā€¦ dissatisfying. Like the cheap box stuff and not the delicious exquisite taste that we were promised.
I said it previously in my Percabeth ship roast, but let me repeat myself: many Percabeth related things are straight up fanon. Some of it is very old fanon so thatā€™s been unable to distinguish unless youā€™ve read the books recently and subtract nearly 99,9% of things you see on Tumblr (and occasionally the other shitty parts of the fandom like Reddit, IG, Twitter. Although they mostly steal and recycle tumblr stuff oh well. But back to the topic).
The way people treat Annabeth is so strange. Sheā€™s either an innocent fluffy smush baby thatā€™s never harmed a fly and all that she wants for Christmas is being Percyā€™s lapdog or sheā€™s the devil incarnate, broke into your house, killed your parents Batman style, kicked your puppy and didnā€™t flush the toilet on the way out. I think this is what mostly makes people hate her or the ship Percabeth. And both extremes are wrong and right at the same time? She is multifaceted so both stereotypes are true and untrue and sorta cancel each other out in the same way.
The true reason why people dislike Annabeth is because the stans are doing the most. (The haters as well, donā€™t get me wrong, but oh boy. Piss of a stan and youā€™ll know what I mean). That isnā€™t inherently new. Are you guys old enough to remember the ship wars that have happened cross platform? Perachel vs. Percabeth? Oh boy, oh boy. I saw some kids on tumblr a few months ago trying to infiltrate both tags and start shit (and also fail). The fact that Rachel still gets used as the bitchy (ex) girlfriend in fanfics? Itā€™s 2020 guys. I know this apocalyptic year is far from perfect and over but I think we can let this trope die, right? Right? I thought weā€™ve established that Rachel is a pretty chill charcter by nowā€¦ right?
If you posted your stuff on FFN back in 2010-2013 and it wasnā€™t the typical cutesy Percabeth story (Goode High, the gods read TLT, punk/prep Percabeth, college AU, etc.) people wouldā€™ve come for your fucking throat. Not because the story or the narration was shit. But because the pairing wasnā€™t Annabeth and Percy (in the sense that Annabeth had to be paired with Percy. I mean Percy gets shipped with everyone and their mother but for Annabeth it was strictly Percy. As annoying as this whole Connabeth thing is ā€“ the people behind it actually had a point. She never had a different love interest unless itā€™s a Percy centered story and he goes off dating Athena, Artemis and Zoe at the same time for some odd reason. Yeah, FFN Percy ships are something). Or it wasnā€™t the action filled canon compliant story or it wasnā€™t an AU that was popular.
People were really stubborn, snobbish and wanted their stuff in the four five boxes that were the most popular ones and thatā€™s it. People have been bullied off the site in many fandoms, so itā€™s not a PJO-only thing but itā€™s still sad that it happened. (Off-note: most of these FFN tropes are still alive and well and thriving on AO3. Donā€™t be so snobbish and pretend that every piece youā€™d find there is a holy grail. Thereā€™s a lot of trash you have to waddle through. Same with Wattpad, Tumblr or anywhere else where fanfics get posted. Also had this discussion with Annabeth stans. Sigh).
And Tumblr back then? Forget it, wasnā€™t much better.
That view has sorta changed (at least for people that have been in the fandom for several years or have managed to find a way to navigate through it) but some of the negative sentiment from back in the day has survived. Be it by new fans coming in or from old fans that never let their stance die. The aggression feels differently and somewhat not. (I donā€™t know if the anon function had been abused that much back in the day. I was an observer not a participant in the fandom).
Crack a joke at Annabethā€™s expense (Kalā€™s famous ā€œAnnabeth is a Republicanā€ post or Dee Deeā€™s and many others ā€œAnnabeth has the education of a second grader, chill with the college plans, girlieā€ stance) and you have people insulting you, making callout posts, unfollowing and blocking you (based on only that? Okay, honey), making aggressive counter-posts, etc. in a minute. If you respond with ā€œItā€™s a joke, itā€™s not realā€ you have a 50/50 chance of either getting blown off or embarrassing them so that they apologize for once.
This isnā€™t just about jokes. You can make a headcanon thatā€™s not the cozy cute convenient mainstream saga and people would react the same way. Or art piece (no, not including the whole Tannabeth Blackchase shtick done by Viria and others) or fanfics.
People project so much onto the unfinished canvas that is Annabeth Chase that any form of negative sentiment as little as someone not liking her to straight up criticism, regardless of how tiny it may be, seems like an affront. Like an invitation to a fight. Like an insult to them, their character, everything they believe in. Let me state something:
You are NOT Annabeth Chase. Annabeth Chase IS NOT you. Annabeth Chase is NOT real. Her feeling cannot be hurt. Someone criticizing, disliking, joking about her or even insulting her will not bother her. Someone making a statement about her is not an insult to YOU.
Let me repeat that:
Annabeth Chase isnā€™t real. Annabeth Chase isnā€™t you.
So think a little before you act? I get it when youā€™re a kid and new to fandoms or havenā€™t been up with fan cultures in the past and are back in the scene. But if youā€™re in your late teens or even older as an adult and youā€™re unable to understand that you arenā€™t what you like ā€“ you arenā€™t the extension of a fictional character ā€“ I feel incredibly sorry for you. Because thatā€™s just incredibly sad. Someone disliking something you like isnā€™t an attack of your character. It shows you that you are you and the other person is a human just like you. That they just have different taste. Disliking something you like isnā€™t a crime, you know? But me feeling sorry for the way some of yā€™all act wonā€™t mean that thatā€™s even remotely okay. Especially if youā€™re no longer in the intended audience for PJO age wise and should know better.
This isnā€™t a ā€œwhite stansā€ only thing. Iā€™ve seen and witnessed firsthand how people of color, mainly women of color, act the same or not even worse when it comes to her character. People have projected their problems and real-life occurring events into her character (Iā€™m sure that she isnā€™t the only character nor that this is the only fandom where this is happening) and in some cases like Iā€™ve said cannot separate their own personality from the fictional world. Fights with woc happened because of Annabeth fucking Chase. So many things have happened in the fandom the past few months, mostly due to people being forced staying at home because of the quarantine but Iā€™d say itā€™s 10% on quarantine and 90% on people for acting up like this.
So hereā€™s a little story: There was the act of Riordan blowing the fandom up because of his own stupidity and being unable to apologize for his mischaracterization and lack of research (the whole Piper fiasco) back in June (?) and admits the upset fandom, people on Twitter, Tumblr and Discord legit thought that none of that mattered and that the outcry was destroying Annabeth Chaseā€™s birthday. Thatā€™s right. People thought that Annabeth Chaseā€™s non-existing birthday because sheā€™s a fictional character had a higher priority than the rupture and prevalent racism in the fandom. Okay. This isnā€™t a great look, Annabeth stans. And this of course pissed a lot of people off. I made a post about it and someone not only berated three other people on said post but no, we had a mighty argument which had disrupted many friendships in our circle which havenā€™t recovered until this very day. We both had our parts in it and no one is innocent. But the cause of this still remains Annabeth Chase or how people prioritize her non-existing well-being. Anyway. Iā€™m getting agitated just thinking about it.
Letā€™s go back to the characterization thing with Annabeth. Let me remind you:
Annabeth Chase is an asshole. There Iā€™ve said it in a post ages ago (too lazy to look it up, sorry) and Iā€™ll say it again. And thatā€™s not me insulting her. Thatā€™s me actually loving that about her. Annabeth is one of the very few unapologetic female characters that really showed all young readers across the world that you can be a girl, a badass, smart, strong, standing up for yourself and what you believe in. You donā€™t have to be nice. You donā€™t have to hide your feelings. You donā€™t need a man in all cases but itā€™s also okay to accept help and defeat.
A large reason why I think sheā€™s an incredibly important character in childrenā€™s literature/YA because many other novels (mostly (sadly)) have the ā€œOh, Iā€™m a white skinny dark-haired girl that likes unconventional things like READING. Iā€™m not like the other girls, that take care of themselves and pamper themselves by enjoying shopping and wearing make-up. No, Iā€™d rather be one of the boys but a sweet cute little boy and not the jock fuck that drank vodka shots out of a filthy shoe once. Despite me calling myself hideous every man in a 10-kilometer radius falls in love with me and tells me Iā€™m oh so sexy and by the way Iā€™m only 16 years oldā€ shit going on for no goddamn reason.
Yes, I do blame Twilight for this mostly in recent years, but this trope isnā€™t by any means knew. Pretty sure that you could even use classics as Pride and Prejudice and dissect them in the same manner (Bold statement: Lizzy Bennet is the OG Bella Swan. There. Go fight somewhere in the corner, people). The new wave of YA focuses on girls belittling themselves and only starting to believe in themselves because someone else (mostly the male love interest) tells them theyā€™re worth it. And these books hit the mainstream because theyā€™re incredibly bland and picture perfect white.
With Annabeth itā€™s different. She shows up for the job and is done with it. (Brie Larson would probably be the perfect in real life version of her. You either like or dislike her. Or you really donā€™t care). That is what is so refreshing about her. Her unapologetic nature. Can it be off-putting? Yes. Is it annoying? Yes! Hell, every time I read The Lightning Thief, I want to rip her goddamn head off. And itā€™s just so well written. Her shift from mistrusting Percy but secretly still believing in him to her opening up. Wow, Riordan did something right there.
Annabeth Chase isnā€™t a young character. She has existed along with PJO for 15 years. Sheā€™s on her way to the second decade. Iā€™m pretty sure that with the success of Percy Jackson (and Harry Potter) many lives have been warped and shaped.
But when I say the problem lies mostly in the fandom, it doesnā€™t mean that Riordanā€™s completely innocent. The only problem that I have with Annabeth lies not truly with her but the fact that Riordan is only able to produce three variations of female characters:
The sweetheart (Hazel, Silena, Calypso, Hestia)
The strong feminist (Annabeth, Piper, Thalia, Reyna, Artemis)
The bitch (Drew, nearly every female goddess in the goddamn Riordanverse next to every female monster)
And these female characters only know three endings:
End up married with a mortgage, three kids, two dogs and a cat somewhere in Connecticut by the age of twelve
Get dumped into the hunt
Chill on Mount Olympus and only come down to be a nuisance and/or give a cryptic message before going back and doing a godly rave party or something
We know Annabeth as the badass strong female first (or the bitchy character weā€™re supposed to actually like. Choose your approach), the blueprint so to speak, so some of the other characters feel almost pale in comparison and almost not needed? Doesnā€™t mean that other characters canā€™t behave similarly, but it feels kind of redundant especially if their character arcs end in a rather anticlimactic way (Thalia, Reyna). The new additions are the much needed woc as the main story with PJO was inherently white (anyway stan black!Percy and Grover, folks). So itā€™s not to bash on the new characters, itā€™s more Riordanā€™s fault more than anything.
Since Riordan only knows three female character arcs it feels like he tried to copy the formula several ways with different nuances. Some more or less successful. This is where fandom actually comes in handy and helps create more distinguished and fleshed out characters in form of headcanons or fanfiction.
But even in these cases people still make it about Annabeth when itā€™s time for characters of colors to shine. Remember that whole spiel and discussion that broke out when people (Kal, diver-up, Caitlyn, Bee, reynaisalesbian, etc.) joked about or criticized that Annabeth thinks that sheā€™s having it harder because sheā€™s a blonde? In front of Hazel and Piper? If she wouldā€™ve been a real person thatā€™s an invitation for getting decked. And then all hell broke loose because Annabeth stans couldnā€™t accept the fact that in the real world and/or in fictional worlds the woc/coc have it harder? That the white woman wasnā€™t the victim that needed the coddling? Yeah, that was mad pathetic.
I hope you people get my point?
Well fuck. I wrote so many things and have the feeling Iā€™ve said nothing. Anyway, I hope I made sense. This is way too long.
TLDR: Chill about Annabeth please. Sheā€™s an important character but that doesnā€™t mean that everyone has to like her, regardless of being a character in the books or a reader/fan of PJO in real life. She isnā€™t nice or a sweetheart all the time. She also isnā€™t the monstrous asshole that some try to make out of her.
Peace out.

Taglist: @melitadala @chxotickpoptrash (please let me know if youā€™d like to be tagged!)
When you entered the house, V ran into your arms for an embrace, calling you his savior, as you had just brought the food, which made the others laugh. When you reassured them again that you were okay with treating them, you all sat down in your freshly cleaned living room to eat.Ā
That was when you noticed Yuta sitting a bit further than the others, eating quietly, and decided to come a bit closer to him.
ā€œYouā€™re not very talkative, are you?ā€ You tried to joke around since no one would listen to you. The others were arguing about one of the professors at uni and if heā€™s single, so they wouldnā€™t even notice you switching places.Ā
ā€œOh, sorry, it was just that I was thinking about something. It shouldnā€™t make you worry, really,ā€ he answered.
ā€œAre you sure? Because you havenā€™t talked to me all day. I mean, I know you just met me this morning and that Iā€™m not your friend, but Iā€™d love to get to know you a bit better.ā€Ā
ā€œIā€™m okay with that, donā€™t worry about me. Iā€™m just paranoid sometimes and Iā€™m thinking a bit too much about certain things, so just ignore me when I do that, okay?ā€
ā€œSo, weā€™re off to a good start, I guess.ā€
ā€œYeah, I guess you can say that.ā€ He smiled at you. This was the second smile he had offered you ever since this morning, and it kind of made you light up a bit. You still didnā€™t know what made you so interested in him. You justĀ hadĀ to get to know him.Ā
The next day was similar to the first, as you had to finish cleaning and start unpacking both yours and Taeyongā€™s things and decorate the living room. Thankfully, Taeyong didnā€™t have a much different taste than yours, so it was actually easy to decide what youā€™d hang on the walls and what color the couch pillows would be. The biggest issue was your rooms and what youā€™d do with them.Ā
You took the boxes with your stuff and Johnny immediately came to help, offering to also help you with your room. V followed you and Yuta went to help Taeyong. You enjoyed their company a lot if you were going to be completely honest, and you secretly thought theyā€™d let you join them sometimes. You really thought you werenā€™t a burden for them, as theyā€™ve been friends for years and you just came to disrupt their lives. Youā€™d never even think of causing a problem to them, so you waited patiently for any signs that would show you how they felt about you. There was just one thing you had to ask.
ā€œSo, how did you guys meet?ā€ you asked, as you were placing your clothes in the closet.
ā€œDo you mean us two, orā€¦ā€
ā€œAll of you. How did you become likeā€¦ a group?ā€Ā
ā€œAh, funny story,ā€ V said, ā€œI got into a fight on my first day of uni. Someone just came straight to me and called me names because I was zoning out, and Johnny with Taeyong came to my rescue.ā€
ā€œAw, theyā€™re true heroes,ā€ you laughed.
ā€œSomething like that. Taeyong and Johnny met right there in front of me, and then we all decided to go to lunch together. Then Yuta came. Taeyong had met him a few hours earlier and told him to go to lunch with him, so we all sat together. And we clicked.ā€Ā
Johnny nodded in agreement and gave you a stack of clothes to put away, while V was telling the story from your bed. You hadnā€™t put the sheets on it yet, so it was only a mattress, but it worked well for him.Ā
ā€œI donā€™t know if I should be asking this but are Taeyong and Yuta that close? I mean, he doesnā€™t tell me much over the phone, and with all the stuff going on because of the house we havenā€™t really talked yet,ā€ you asked.
ā€œTheyā€™re close. Theyā€™re not together if thatā€™s what youā€™re asking. Theyā€™re just really good friends. If you ask me, we make a great group. Itā€™s just that he always was a bit more protective over Taeyong, but Yutaā€™s definitely straight. If he wasnā€™t Iā€™m sure theyā€™d already been together by now,ā€ Johnny told you and you continued putting clothes away, when Johnny interrupted your thoughts. ā€œDonā€™t mind him. He might seem a bit distant, but heā€™ll open up eventually. Itā€™s probably that youā€™ve been friends with Taeyong for so long and he feels kind of left out.ā€
ā€œOh my god, have I done anything like that?ā€
ā€œNo, no. Donā€™t worry about it. He was thinking about it ever since he found out youā€™d move with Taeyong but, trust me, you havenā€™t done anything. I mean, you didnā€™t make any of us feel bad. Youā€™re actually fun to be around. You can come to hang out with us whenever you want, okay?ā€ Johnnyā€™s words were music to your ears. What you were hoping for was coming true. Your new life had officially started taking its form, and you were ecstatic about it.Ā
Your house was finally ready, your posters were on the walls and your clothes were in the closet. After you made your bed and had V try it out, you could finally sit and enjoy it.
ā€œDid you call your mom? Sheā€™s probably scared to death that she just let you handle a new house on our own,ā€ Taeyong told you after the guys left.
ā€œI did and I also sent her pictures. Sheā€™s thrilled.ā€
ā€œYour dad?ā€
ā€œMom said he just nodded. I wouldnā€™t expect anything else.ā€ You sat on the couch next to Taeyong.
ā€œHe doesnā€™t get really involved, does he?ā€
ā€œOnly when heā€™s in the mood. Which happens aboutā€¦ five times a year?ā€
ā€œSucks to be you.ā€
ā€œYeah, especially when he missed my gymnastics performance.ā€ You took a bite of your sandwich.Ā
ā€œWell, now youā€™re here. If he doesnā€™t want to lose you, he has some work to do. Now, will you give me a bite?ā€ And that was how the evening passed with Taeyong. You were calm, relaxed and it was exactly how you imagined it to be. All you had to worry about for the time being was the first day of uni.Ā
You woke up the next morning and looked too pale to be human, as you had barely managed to sleep last night. You got dressed in one of your favorite outfits, a loose red shirt and black ripped jeans, and washed your face before putting some mascara and lipstick on. When Taeyong confirmed you looked hot, you were ready to go. Taeyong left you outside of the building of your first class and left for his class.
You went inside and found a seat not too close to the professor, and soon after, you noticed a tall guy approaching you and taking the seat next to you.
ā€œFirst day, huh?ā€ he asked you. ā€œAre you excited?ā€
ā€œYeah, pretty much. Iā€™m kind of stressed too. Whatā€™s your name, by the way?ā€
ā€œIā€™m Yugyeom. Itā€™s nice to meet you.ā€ He extended his arm to you for a handshake.Ā
ā€œIā€™m Y/N.ā€ And that was your first acquaintance. He seemed really nice. Kind, at least. You liked him at a first glance. He turned to speak to you quite a few times during our first class, but he didnā€™t annoy you. He was quite pleasant to be around.Ā
After a while, you heard someone enter the room, stumbling on the stairs.Ā
ā€œOh, Iā€™m so sorry!ā€ he said and took the seat next to you, on the opposite side of Yugyeom. ā€œWas I too loud?ā€ he whispered to you.Ā
ā€œNo, donā€™t worry about it. No oneā€™s going to remember it tomorrow anyway,ā€ you smiled at him.Ā
ā€œI hope so. And, if they do, at least I made them laugh.ā€ He smiled back. ā€œIā€™m Chan.ā€
ā€œIā€™m Y/N and this is Yugyeom,ā€ you said and shook hands with him as well.
When the first class was over, you headed to the other classroom for the next period and sat next to the two boys you had just met. They were extremely fun to be with, especially Chan, who was a walking mess and extremely clumsy.Ā
You suggested going for coffee after class, so you texted Taeyong not to pick you up and walked next to Chan and Yugyeom, who knew a nice coffee shop around the corner. You found a table and sat down when you saw a guy approaching your table.Ā
ā€œHey, Yugyeom, wasnā€™t he sitting close to us in class?ā€
ā€œNow that you mention it, yeah. Should we tell him to sit with us?ā€ And, before you could even answer, Yugyeom was already standing up from his chair. ā€œHey! Wanna sit with us?ā€
ā€œUh, sure.ā€
ā€œWe saw you in class, weā€™re not creeps, I promise,ā€ you reassured him. ā€œThis is Yugyeom and this is Chan.ā€
ā€œIā€™m BamBam.ā€
ā€œBamBam?ā€ Chan asked. ā€œIs it a nickname?ā€
ā€œYeah, Iā€™m from Thailand and no one actually remembers my real name, so I use this one instead.ā€
ā€œOh, thatā€™s so interesting!ā€ Yugyeom was amazed and started talking to BamBam nonstop, which he didnā€™t seem to mind, so you just talked to Chan until Yugyeomā€™s rant ended.
ā€œWould you like to order?ā€ The waiter interrupted you. He was standing next to your table for a while, but no one had noticed him.
ā€œYeah, sorry,ā€ you said and turned towards him, as he was standing beside you. That was when you noticed how hot he looked and, right after everyone ordered, you turned to Chan. ā€œI donā€™t know if youā€™re gay, straight, or anything else, but that one was hot as fuck.ā€
ā€œIā€™m bi, and yes he was. You should ask for his number.ā€
ā€œChan, Iā€™m not that bold.ā€
ā€œYeah, but you have nothing to lose. Look, we can send you to pay when weā€™re done, so you can talk to him without us there. That doesnā€™t involve any flirting, right?ā€
ā€œFine. Give me your money, yā€™all.ā€ The other two guys turned to you in shock, but Chan promised to explain while you were gone. So, you got up and walked towards the register.Ā
ā€œHi,ā€ you told him. When he turned towards you, you deeply wished you hadnā€™t agreed to this. He was too handsome for you to handle.
ā€œAh, they sent you to pay?ā€ He laughed.
ā€œYeah, they did.ā€ You paused and contemplated if you should continue the conversation when your thoughts were interrupted.
ā€œUm, Iā€™m sorry if itā€™s weird to ask, but whatā€™s your name.ā€
ā€œIā€™m Y/N.ā€
ā€œAh, thatā€™s a beautiful name. Iā€™m Jonghyun. Do you happen to go to uni here?ā€
ā€œYeah, film major. This is my first year. What about you?ā€
ā€œMe too! But Iā€™m in the third year.ā€ He smiled at you, but he was called to a table and had to go. ā€œYou should come by again tomorrow. I can treat you to a cup of warm coffee. My shift ends at 6.ā€

kind of want to elucidate how i feel about the whole thing. i doubt anyone will ever care about this perspective on this extremely niche topic, but itll still be nice to have my thoughts written out somewhere. also just general journaling and writing practice, i really need to get better at conveying
its kind of crazy how sometimes i feel imposter syndrome regarding autism. iā€™m definitely high functioning, but the way this site is youā€™d think its the only type of autism to exist. I really am interested in the differences between how cis males experience having autism and the way ftm males experience autism. already, the preponderance ofĀ ā€˜autisticā€™ ftms is kind of odd. I do believe autism affects women, in fact one of the few brief episodes of autism solidarity in my life was my friendship with one at a educational program. Yeah, actually, in this post i really want to contrast what ive experienced as an autistic person and my interactions with other autistic people, vs tumblr autism. Its said that autism can affect gender identity, and it probably is true that autistic traits across both sexes are construed as masculine. Iā€™ve really met two kinds of autistic people in my life. Theres autistic people who are still really un-selfware, lower functioning, and then theres people like me, who can function somewhat better and have managed to mostly supress sensory problems. It really is so hard to do, and the autistics ive met irl agree. In fact, for the most part we actually carry a lot of guilt over being autistic, self hatred for everything being so difficult when its not a problem for normal people at all. I still donā€™t really know how to feel about that. On the one hand, I do resonate with the concept that disabilites are a result of society, but i dont think thats an absolute principle. The ability to do unpleasant things, to take care of and clean oneself, to properly read social cues and norms will always be important for interacting with other people regardless of social structure or situation. Autistic people will probably always struggle with these things. Im certainly in the autism sucks camp, if i could get it cured or whatever iā€™d do it in a heartbeat. I do think being autistic has been important to forming my identity, but i am so fucking tired of being alone and friendless. Still, the guilt and self hatred i feel about my autism isn;t even the worse iā€™ve seen. The autistic girl I used to be friends with was also a devout christian, which we often argued about. Why on earth would god make autistic people? Iā€™ll always remember being shocked when she told me the story of how in college sheā€™d been raped, but even now she blames herself and being autistic. If sheā€™d been more self aware, more alert to the guys ulterior motives, she feels like it wouldnā€™t have happened. I donā€™t agree, regardless of the society and situation rape shouldnā€™t happen and is never the victims fault. But it illustrates how negatively actuallyautistic(which is a stupid fucking tag) people feel about autism.
I do wonder what people in the other camp think autism speaks should actually do. I suppose just give free money to autistic people. That actually wouldnā€™t be half bad, but it should all go to people at assisted living programs or psych facilities. Its true that autism makes some of the demands of most jobs more difficult and thinks like attractiveness, personal grooming and social skills should absolutley not effect employment the way they do, but how the fuck do you legislate for that.
Another odd thing to me is the level of community that female autistics and ftm autistics seem to have. Autistic cis males are infamous for being friendless losers, and I am no exception. the closest thing to an autistic community is places like 4chan, which makes sense, as theres no social norms and no real connections to be made. I suposse its certainly possible that there are autistics who are incredibly good at masking, and have managed to ingrain certain habits in themselvesĀ
another intersting contrast, though certainly a difficult one to discuss, is sexual inadequacy and so on. Everyone knows autistic guys dont really get pussy. I do wonder what is like for cis gay autistics. I do believe that gay people are generally more accepting and interested in more kinds of people and bodies than straights. Not really sure how much sexual dysfunction there is amongstĀ ā€˜autisticā€™ ftms or women. virtually all of theĀ ā€˜autisticā€™ ftms are gay, and typically date amongst themselves, which no doubt makes things easier. theres also a preponderance of asexual autistic ftms or enbies, many of whom are ā€˜high-functioningā€™ which is odd given that while asexuality has been connected to autism before, itā€™s mostly in severely autistic individuals who donā€™t care about social stuff at all. A lot of these asexual ā€˜autisticā€™ ftms seem just as obsessed with shipping dynamics as the allo ā€˜autisticā€™ ftms.
I wonder if theres something of a generational divide between zoomer autistics and older ones. older cis male autistics are way likelier to be bitter, extremist friendless losers, zoomer cis male autistics are much more likely to transition, which provides another, far stronger community.
At the end of the day, this all revolves around the fact that people who are ā€˜proudā€™ of their autism are innately suspicious to me. I realize there are people who reclaim their identity and move past the stigma, but surely there must be some lingering bitterness over how one was treated and how unfair it is. If your not bitter about it, it makes me wonder just how much ur ā€˜autismā€™ actually made you suffer, and If it didnā€™t or not very much at all, I just canā€™t see you as autistic. You donā€™t understand the pain that comes from actually struggling with it.
I also just really, really hate all of those jokes about how autism is sexy or cool. I realize some people say that sort of thing as a way to fight the stigma but it feels like itā€™s at the expense of actually recognizing the painful aspects of autism. Online friendships and communications are just as difficult and confusing as in person interactions are to me, yet a lot of autistics on tumblr seem to find an online community and integrate into it pretty effortlessly.

Hi Pia!! I love your work and have consistently been reading it for over a couple of years, currently every TIP update u post makes my days a bit brighter šŸ„°
It is also thanks to you that I started posting fics last year after more than three years not doing so. While some of my fics have been wildly popular in a fandom some others don't seem to have landed as well within the same one, so I wanted to ask, what do you do about those stories that excite you but that don't seem to have found an audience yet, or that they never will?? How do you work through the fear of them not being worth your writing time?
Have a lovely day šŸ’ššŸ€
Hi anon,
This is a hugely complicated question.
For a start, for writing that is for income, if I think it won't do well, I don't write it (although only to a point, I wrote The Gentle Wolf because asexual representation mattered more to me than sales, but it still hit hard when that turned out to be true). I don't like to mess with things that pay the bills. I hate that I have to look at metrics in that sense, but I do. But thankfully we're not talking about original fiction:
For fanfiction, things are different, and there might be a lot of different things going on.
For a start, almost always, when people ask me this question they are still getting some interaction on their fics, just not as much as they wanted or imagined. It can really help to like, remember to be grateful for every person who interacts, and not just the 'quantity' of interactions.
I think like... I am a big fan of 'write for yourself' but it's also true that I write for interaction on AO3. Just... only you can decide how much of the former will compensate for not much of the latter. There are people out there who are like 'if I was only writing for myself I'd keep it in my computer.' I'm not like that, and I don't vibe that way. I write for myself but enjoy sharing it, in case something that worked well for me, works well for a stranger. Everyone is different and that's eventually going to be what the crux of this post is, lol.
Popularity is influenced by the fact that some fandoms are more dead than others and lack interaction across the board in general (Persona 5, for example, is notorious for this). Some fandoms like certain tropes more than others. Some fandoms are massively popular for three weeks and then die almost immediately. And so on and so on.
Ultimately fandom is fickle, it's loyal to the stories they like more than the authors they like, and you can't predict what will be a flash in the pan and what won't be, and it doesn't always have anything to do with the quality of the fic itself or the tags you used. (This is sort of like how sketches will sometimes get tens of thousands of notes and a 300 hour single piece of quality art will get 400 notes, while a professional artist tears their hair out in pieces).
Sometimes, a fic will be more interesting to me than the reality of fandom interaction and I'll write it. Touching and Melting for Houseki no Kuni is a good example of that. A tiny fic for honestly an extremely quiet and tiny western fandom in terms of fic, which looks like it had a lot of interaction 3 years on, but had almost nothing in the first few months. And sometimes the fic idea won't be more interesting to me than the reality of the fandom interaction, and I won't write it. I go story idea by story idea.
But I've also taught myself to really think about a) the way I talk about interaction and b) to really value every individual that leaves a kudos, or comments, or public bookmarks. When I sort of started out with Shadows and Light, I remember being so bummed when a story didn't do as well, and thinking that meant it was doing 'badly.' Let's be real, Game Theory when it started out had less than a tenth of the interaction of SALverse, and I thought I had failed. If I'd given up at that point, well... all of this wouldn't exist.
And then just looking at fanfiction, it's like.. well, sometimes fics do a lot worse than other fics, there's usually at least one person who will read it and leave a kudos. I remind myself that to that person, the story mattered or meant something, which meant I didn't just write it for myself anymore, there is interaction.
This is much harder on stories that have zero comments, and zero kudos, obviously, no one likes to feel as though they are shouting into the void. But it's also my experience that writers who've had popular fics, don't often have 'zero kudos fics' when they say a fic is doing really badly. They just..maybe need to value the individual interactions alongside how good a 'mass' of interaction can feel, or alongside how good 'quantity' can feel. I do really think that's a skill that a lot of like...enthusiastic fanfiction writers have mastered or at least are learning.
Sometimes it really helps to have somewhere in private to vent to when you feel emotionally overloaded or insecure, and honestly sometimes it can help to re-evaluate.
For some people, writing fic when a certain threshold of interaction isn't reached, just isn't worth it. I can't convince people like that to keep writing. If there's a deep seated 'this isn't worth it' then stop doing it.
If there's 'this is insecurity and I'm not good at valuing everyone and I feel down right now but it'll pass' then...work quietly and patiently and compassionately on strengthening your resilience and your trust in your own writing, and your ability to value individuals who interact and engage on your fics. If you don't do this, you may end up bitter and resentful, and that can influence your entire relationship with fandom, and worse, the people who interact with your fics.
Also, finally:
How do you work through the fear of them not being worth your writing time?
In fanfiction, I do not base whether something is worth my writing time on the quantity of people who will interact with it. It is worth my writing time because I'm really excited to write it, and I want to share it, even if people don't respond immediately, or even if only one person ever comments.
I don't...have this fear that you have based on the things you're basing it on - my fears are different to yours. It's fanfiction. It's worth my writing time because I'm eager to write or fix or alter something in canon or I want to make the two boys fuck because no one else was going to, and because I can generally trust that one person out there will probably read it, even if I go back over 10 years ago and my Livejournal fics were only getting like one comment per chapter. If that.
If your metric for 'worthiness' is 'quantity of interaction' then - I'm the wrong person to talk to, I'm literally motivated to write fanfiction by completely different factors to you. I didn't start SAL knowing it would get popular, I thought people would hate me because I killed Jamie in the first chapter, and up until that point none of my fics had been popular.
I can't convince you on the things that convince me, when our foundational motivations are different. If you want quantity and that's what 'worth' means to you, I don't know what to tell you, I would never have written SAL in the first place if I hadn't been the kind of person to just write fanfic for almost no / or no interactions, and still enjoy that single person who said 'I really enjoyed this thank you for writing.' I didn't spring into being as someone who was writing fics that got a lot of interaction, that came...years later, y'know?
So what is worthy to me sounds like it's also just different to what is worthy to you. Ultimately, there are people only writing fanfiction on the basis of how many people interact with them, and...I don't know how those people keep choosing to write honestly, and I think a lot eventually abandon it, because there's no algorithm to crack in order to be successful every time. Maybe...remind yourself that you've had popular fics in the past and therefore you will again? And that you can't get to that point without less popular fics on the step ladder in the meantime? Therefore, even a fic that doesn't feel 'worth your time' will be a stepping stone to the one that is?
Imho, I think my fics are worth my time because I enjoy reading them once they're finished. And then I think they're worth my time because other people enjoy them. Having a popular fic is fun and nice, but honestly, often a fluke, and doesn't always say anything about the quality of the writing (some of the most popular Yuri! on Ice stories with 10,000+ kudos were like...not always...the most well-written stories, but people were desperate for Content, and it was certainly that).
But yeah, how I think about fanfiction is very different to how I think about 'fiction that has to earn an income.' Ultimately I don't want to apply the latter philosophies to the former, other people do. If you're applying 'this needs to hit a certain threshold of interaction to be worthy' as your basis for writing fanfiction, then...we have very very different motivations for creating content in fandom! And I'm the wrong person to ask.
As I said, it's complicated, lol.

Kyidyl Explains Bones - Part 3
Well, I had this halfway done and then TUMBLR ATE IT, so let me start again.Ā  UGH.Ā Ā
(These posts are collected under the KyidylBones tag. Do with that information what you will, lol.)Ā
So what are we getting into today? Sex determination!Ā
Ethical Note:Ā Iā€™m adding this bc not everyone who sees this post saw my post yesterday and this is important info, especially on Tumblr.Ā  Anthropologists of all stripes are well aware that sex and gender are extremely complicated.Ā  Trust me, we know.Ā  But we still do sex determination for a few reasons.Ā  First, because missing persons databases are arranged on a male/female binary, and if weā€™re comparing a set of remains to that database to identify the remains then we need that info.Ā  Second, demographic info for populations that have disappeared is important, even if those populations are historical.Ā  This might shock you (<--sarcasm), but written records are usually either lacking or inaccurate.Ā  Third, if we know the sex of the skeleton we can compare that to the grave goods and learn some interesting cultural things, including possibly being trans, because none of the signs of being trans survive physically in the skeleton.Ā  So I am going to be using male/female binary language, but it isnā€™t to exclude the wide variety of sexes and genders that donā€™t exist on that binary, itā€™s because itā€™s what Iā€™ve got to work with.Ā  And if you have questions about this, feel free to ask, but please be respectful.Ā Ā
Alright, so there are some vocab words for todayā€™s post and I had them all nicely written out in an easy to read paragraph, but it got eaten, so Iā€™m just gonna present them in list fashion this time:Ā
Characteristic - All physical markers of human variation exist on a spectrum because humans are varied and we invented the categories to begin with.Ā  If something is characteristic of, say, a male? It means that it is very, very distinctly male.Ā  It matches the stereotypical expectation of what youā€™d see in a male.Ā  Itā€™s a standard for an obvious example of a given thing.Ā Ā
Landmark - A landmark on your bones is a feature of the bones that is always in the same place.Ā  We use this to help us identify a bone and to help us know what side it is on.Ā  IE, your lesser trochanter is a bump on your femur (thigh bone) that is on the inside towards the back.Ā  Itā€™s always in that spot, so we know which direction it should face and ergo which side it would be on.Ā  Landmarks are unique to the bone in question.Ā Ā
Foramen - A hole on a bone.Ā  The big one in your skull that your spinal cord goes through is the foramen magnum and it literally means big hole.Ā  But there are a lot of little ones all over your skeleton so your nerves and blood vessels can do to your skeleton what the weirwood did to Bryden Rivers.Ā  I said what I said. ;)Ā
Bilateral - Both sides.Ā  Humans have bilateral symmetry and so one side is symmetrical (externally and WRT your skeleton, but not always your organs.) to the other.Ā  You can split us down the middle and the two sides are basically the same.Ā Ā
Ok, so thereā€™s another set of terms that you need to know, but Iā€™m going to be copying and pasting this into every post going forward so Iā€™m making it separate.Ā  Anyone who works with any kind of anatomy uses these terms to be very specific about the location of something on the body.Ā  They are:Ā
Anterior/Posterior - Front and back respectively.Ā  I remember them because my mom used to say posterior when she didnā€™t want to say butt, and because A comes before P the way front comes before back.Ā  Sometimes people say dorsal and ventral, and I remember that because a dorsal fin is on a whaleā€™s back.Ā Ā
Proximal/Distal - Near and far vertically in relationship to the center of your body.Ā  I remember it because one end of the bone is in close proximityĀ to me and the other one is distant.Ā Ā
Medial/Lateral - Near and far horizontally in relationship to the center of your body.Ā  I remember it because medial is closer to the middle of my body, and lateral isnā€™t medial.Ā  Also, if you are reading left to right L comes before M and youā€™d get to a lateral body part before a medial one.Ā Ā
So, where to begin? How do we know what sex people were assigned at birth from just their skeleton? Letā€™s start with what everyone is most familiar with:Ā
The Pelvis
The pelvis of an adult human is a really common thing for an archaeologist to find.Ā  And by the time we find it, itā€™s usually in three pieces (excluding your tailbone aka last vertebra).Ā  Your left and right hip bones, called the innominates, and your sacrum.Ā  Mind you, the pelvis is made up of a number of bones, but they all fuse in adulthood except these three (fun fact: Iā€™m so used to using the individual names for them that I had to *google* the word innominate.), so this is what we usually find.Ā  If itā€™s a kid, they still survive well because theyā€™re thick, heavy bones, but they arenā€™t fused.Ā  Another fun fact, the bumps of bone that you feel under your ass are called your ischium and Iā€™m only telling you that because I think itā€™s a fun word to say.Ā  Your hop bones, like the actual entirety of the flat bladed part at the top, thatā€™s called the Illium.Ā  I like that word too.Ā  Aaanyway, hereā€™s a human pelvis:Ā
Tumblr media
(Source)
These are actual bone specimens in the top down view, both are women, but they are of different ethnic origin.Ā Ā
Tumblr media
(Source)
This is a cast (IE, plastic), front view of a male pelvis.Ā Ā
You can see those 3 pieces Iā€™m talking about.Ā  The only joint there that remains unfused is the sacroiliac joint, IE, where the two halves of the pelvis join the sacrum.Ā  However! You sacrum is technically a series of fused vertebrae and your spinal cord runs almost all the way to the very tip.Ā  There are some conditions which cause these not to fuse, or to not fuse properly, or to not properly encase the spinal cord and it causes all KINDS of issues.Ā  But anyway, yeah, your sacrum is a really tough hunk of bone because it carries a lot of weight.Ā  The bit in the front is called the pubic symphysis and, despite what certain tumblr posts would have you believe, having children does NOT leave a notch on the inner side of it from the muscle tearing away tiny chunks of the bone.Ā  In fact, it is hotly debated whether or not pregnancy leaves behind any skeletal evidence at all.Ā Ā
Alright, so basically speaking, females make da babies and males donā€™t, so the different equipment is differently shaped......
.....wait, no, thatā€™s not right.Ā  Letā€™s back up.Ā  Male and female humans are differently proportioned and their center of gravity is, on average, different.Ā  This is the whole thing about men having upper body strength and women having thighs that can crush watermelons.Ā  This is on *average* (I will be saying a lot about averages in these posts.) true.Ā  And so the physics of the forces exerted on your bones is different.Ā  Males are top-heavy, and so their pelvis is shaped in response to their gate and muscle structure because the pelvis supports and distributes the weight of your entire body.Ā  And bipedalism means that the shape of the pelvis is very, very different depending on the weight distribution.Ā  These changes to the pelvis are really obvious, which is why we can tell from just a few bones whether or not a hominin was bipedal.Ā  It changes the *entire* body.Ā Ā
It is true though that the pelvis of a female is different than a male, because a female pelvis has to be able to support the weight of a developing child while still allowing the individual to walk.Ā  So the interaction of average size, a uterus, and the bipedal gate means that male and female pelvises are a different shape.Ā Ā
Here is a comparison:Ā
Tumblr media
(Source)
So firstly, that angle is called the sub-public angle, and because a females pelvis is wider and flatter than a maleā€™s (when viewed from the front) itā€™s wider in the front.Ā  This also gives any babies more room.Ā  Secondly, you can see the difference in the tilt of the sacrum - in the female you canā€™t see the tailbone.Ā  This, again, is due to the confluence of weight distribution and the necessity of passing a babyā€™s head through that space.Ā  It would be a lot harder to push it out if you had a tailbone in the way.Ā  Lastly, you can see that the shape of the circle when you look top down and bottom up are different - wider on the woman because of the same reasons Iā€™ve already mentioned.Ā  There is one more major difference between the male and female pelvis, and thatā€™s the sciatic notch:Ā
Tumblr media
(Source)
Characteristic of male on the left, intermediate in the middle, and female on the right (and dang, she was young, too.).Ā  Thinner is male, wider is female.Ā  Usually you can fit your thumb in a femaleā€™s notch but barely or not at all in a male.Ā  I personally find the subpubic arch and the sciatic notch the easiest to use because, fun fact #2, those 3 sections are a bitch to hold together with your hands and that makes it hard to see the other shapes.Ā  The amount of sacrums and pelvic bones Iā€™ve accidentally dropped while trying to determine sex....itā€™s a lot, ok? Itā€™s a lot.Ā  I only have two hands and pelvises are big.Ā Ā
There are also several less obvious ways of determining sex from a skeleton, so you guys should definitely visit the source for the above image because they go into it deeper and there are several excellent images of public bones.Ā Ā
So how else do we determine sex? The next easiest way is from the skull, because the features are distinct and skulls survive well.Ā Ā
The Skull
In my opinion the easiest landmark to use on a skull for sex determination is the jaw.Ā  There are several features of the jaw that can be used here - and, mind you, when determining sex we measure every small and large sex-linked feature according to a scale and then average it all out.Ā  We never look at any single thing (although sometimes the individual has something so characteristic that you canā€™t help it.Ā  The individual in my position has a brow like a neanderthal, so it was pretty obvious.).Ā  Anyway, there are several features here but the easiest is to look at the shape of the lateral distal posterior portion of the jaw.Ā  Itā€™s called the masseteric tuberosity.Ā  Basically, itā€™s a little bit of bone that sticks out of the back of your jaw.Ā  Itā€™s one of the attachment points of the masseter aka chewing muscles attach.Ā  Because males have stronger muscles pulling on that part of the jaw and exerting more force, it flares out further for them when you look at it from the front, like this:Ā
Tumblr media
(Source)
Itā€™s that sticky-outy thing thing that I circled in red.Ā  Here is an example of the same thing on females:Ā
Tumblr media
(Source)
Female jaws are rounder, and so that bit is less defined, flares out less, and is not as sharp as it is on males.Ā  And this is a reminder that these measures arenā€™t absolutes - humans have a lot of variance in them.Ā  The female asian and the male on the right both have somewhat atypical structures, while the female european and the two other males have a very characteristic structure.Ā Ā
The two other easiest to identify are the shape of the brown line and the shape of the chin (the mental protuberance).Ā  Here is an image of the comparison:Ā
Tumblr media
(Source: Pinterest, but this images are from the Human Bone Manual text that I use and I used this image so I wouldnā€™t have to make my own. :P)Ā
You can see in the profile that the female skull has a higher, more vertical forehead with less pronounced brow ridges.Ā  If you look, you can also see that her chin protrudes less in profile, and is softer and less pronounced in the frontal view.Ā  The angle under her teeth is less severe.Ā Ā
So these three things, the chin, the brow, and the jaw, are the easiest to identify the most likely to be characteristic of the sex of the individual.Ā  But, if you compare the images Iā€™ve used here youā€™ll also notice that there are other differences in the skull.Ā  Females have more of a slope to the bottom of their jaw, the bump on the back of their heads (the occipital protuberance) tends to be far less pronounced; and this is the case for all muscle attachments generally speaking.Ā  On average, males are more easily able to build muscle mass and are larger, and so their muscles pull harder on their skeletons and create larger muscle attachments.Ā  The round, blunt thing to the right of the back of the jaw that sticks out from the skull (the mastoid process), is also at a different angle and is larger in males.Ā  This is another case of the muscles being bigger and stronger - the mastoid process is where several of your jaw and neck muscles attach.Ā Ā
There you have it, then.Ā  The easiest ways to tell the sex of a skeleton.Ā  :)Ā

Some Reasons I Love One Piece
So I set up a poll to ask what I should do for my 4000 follower milestone, and something like 85% of the responses to my poll said you wanted me to do a compilation of stuff I love about One Piece! So hell yeah, get ready for me to talk about pirates for way too long (a sentence that could also serve as an accurate blog description).
Before that though, lemme just say- thank you all! Seriously! When I started this blog I figured Iā€™d be extremely lucky to end up with like a thousand followers, and now I have four times that and it just keeps growing, which just constantly baffles and amazes me. I adore every one of you, and youā€™re providing me something fun and productive to do in quarantine, and I love you for that.
Anyways! Letā€™s talk good shit.
Letā€™s start with Luffy. The whole story starts with him, after all.
I love Luffy, just as a character. Heā€™s one of my favorite protagonists in anything, ever, when ordinarily protagonist characters donā€™t really appeal to me all that much. I genuinely think he might be my favorite character in One Piece now that I sit down and really think about it. I love how unconventional of a main character he is- he actively shuns the idea of being a hero and is in fact the most chaotic neutral motherfucker on the planet, and yet heā€™s so friendly and loyal and fun that you straight up canā€™t not love him both in-universe and out.Ā
I also love the Strawhats just in general, both as a group and individually. Found family is one of my all-time favorite story tropes, and they do it better than like, the vast majority of stories out there. Theyā€™re all so completely unique from each other and play off each other so well and they really do feel like a family. I love how often Oda just shows them fucking around and hanging out. (One of my only gripes with post-timeskip is how much time they spend split apart.) I think it says a lot about them that I struggled so much when someone asked me to rank the Strawhats a few months back and had to rearrange the list like four times. I just!! Love them all!!
One of my favorite things about One Piece is that itā€™s the story of Luffyā€™s rise, and that it occurs in a world thatā€™s so solidly scaled and well-developed that all progress he makes actually feels tangible and impactful. Some of my favorite moments in One Piece are the ones where we can see how far he and the crew have come and see other peopleā€™s reactions. His reappearance at Sabaody after the timeskip is my favorite scene in the manga, full stop. His entrance at Marineford and all of the Decks of the World cover stories delight me for the same reason.
Speaking of the worldbuilding, god itā€™s so good? I think one of the greatest potential strengths of a long manga is that its just got so much time to establish and build on so much information, and sometimes that leads to mangaka kind of tying themselves in knots with too much lore and explanation, but Oda just fucking nails it.Ā
I recently read a conversation during Zou where the Strawhats are talking to Inuarashi, Nekomamushi and the Wano folks about all their mutual acquaintances on the Roger Pirates- Brook asks about Crocus, Franky mentions Tom, etc- and I had a moment where I realized how in pretty much any other series all those connections might seem contrived, but in One Piece it works so well. So much time has been dedicated to establishing all these facts and characters and connections over years and hundreds of chapters that when they do come together, it just feels so satisfying.Ā
Like, at Twin Cape Crocus mentions he was a shipā€™s doctor and then mentions Roger as the Strawhats leave, at Thriller Bark we find out heā€™s Brookā€™s friend, at Sabaody in conversation with Rayleigh we find out for sureĀ which ship he was a doctor on and that he joined them to look for Brookā€™s crew- and it all just falls together so nicely. One Piece is maybe the strongest series Iā€™ve ever read in terms of how it establishes its characters and concepts and how they all fit into the world and cross over and connect with each other. The world of One Piece is huge, but it also feels so alive and interconnected, and thatā€™s just wonderful.Ā
I love how hopeful One Piece is. I was talking to a friend a couple months ago who doesnā€™t watch it, and she kind of dismissed it asĀ ā€˜a show where nobody dies.ā€™ Which- setting aside the fact that thatā€™s just not fucking true- my first response to that was,Ā ā€œSo?ā€ I think itā€™s nice that we can all know for pretty much certain that the Strawhats will achieve their dreams in the end. Thereā€™ll be a happy ending, and Luffyā€™s going to be Pirate King, weā€™ve known that from the start. The fun is in seeing how they get there.Ā
Aside from a few specific cases, I also really like how Oda does his character writing just in general. The female characters in One Piece generally get a bad rap, largely from people who havenā€™t watched the show and judge it on the (admittedly exaggerated) artstyle, but fuck if I havenā€™t seen such a widely varied and developed and flawed female cast writing-wise since- I donā€™t even know. Oda does a really good job of giving his characters, both male and female, unique and memorable personalities, which is super fucking impressive considering just how many there are. Similarly, Iā€™m impressed by how new characters are introduced without getting repetitive or annoying, and very often those characters are really fantastic. I could talk about all the different One Piece characters I love and why, but we would legitimately be here all day.Ā
I also love how unlike a lot of long-running series like this, characters donā€™t just go away when their time in the spotlight is done. In just about any other series, characters like Buggy and Coby and Crocodile would just be gone and never to be heard from again after theyā€™ve served their purpose. Instead you have the stupid clown villain from the second arc becoming a fucking shichibukai several hundred chapters later, and it makes sense in the context of the story! The whole concept of the cover stories works really well towards this aspect of One Piece, letting us see what all these other characters are up to without taking attention off the main story. This fits in with the interconnectedness I mentioned earlier, too.Ā
And I like how (and I know there are people who will argue this, I have had them in my inbox, but I do not care) One Piece has stayed so strong for so long. Iā€™ve mentioned before that both of my favorite big arcs are pre-timeskip- Alabasta, for the civil war storyline and great supporting cast and villains, and W7/Enies Lobby, for the epic emotional highs and lowers + ANOTHER great supporting cast.Ā But like, Iā€™ve been enjoying the more recent arcs just as much! Honestly, now that Iā€™ve finished Dressrosa, I think it definitely ranks up there among my favorites as well, for how chaotic and fun and high-stakes the whole thing felt when I was binging through it. Iā€™m only a few chapters into Whole Cake Island so far but it seems very promising, and Iā€™m really excited to get to Wano from what Iā€™ve seen of it.
I havenā€™t even really touched on the art yet, either. I know the artstyle turns some people off of the series, for how kind of cartoony it is sometimes and how different it is from most other series, but honestly I just love it. I wasnā€™t sure about it at the start but it grew on me very fast.Ā Hell, I have a whole tag (which I should use more) dedicated just to appreciation of pretty panels.
And the action scenes in One Piece are so fun and expressive and creative and almost always at least a little silly just by the nature of Luffyā€™s powers. I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever been bored during a One Piece fight. And the splash pages are frequently just breathtaking. Iā€™m a writing person, not an art person, so Iā€™m bad at putting this kind of thing into words nearly as well, but- yeah. One Piece Art Good.Ā (My friend Narramin also has a really, really good series of posts about how great the visual storytelling in OP is starting here that I highly recommend, if youā€™re interested.)
Finally, I think my favorite thing about One Piece is that itā€™s all one story, start to end. I kind of touched on this above with the worldbuilding thing, but you can see what a ridiculous degree of thought and planning Oda has put into his story, and how well everything comes together. Itā€™s the main aspect that got me to give One Piece a try in the first place- I heard how good and thought-out the long term storytelling is, and I just eat that shit up. I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever had the level of trust in a creator to handle and end their story satisfyingly that I have in Oda. Itā€™s a good feeling.Ā

Hello :3 Thank u for working so hard on your gifsets, please take your time producing your quality content šŸ„ŗ I don't really have a Tua related ask to send in askskskd but I'm down to read abt Five at all times so there's that. So here goes: Your thoughts on Five and Reginald and the nature of their relationship? Thank you <3
Aaahhhh thank you, you are so sweet!! And Iā€™m actually working on a deeper dive into the relationship between Reginald and Five, especially looking at the bar scene, because it fascinates me, but I keep getting distracted, but itā€™s coming, I promise.
In the meanwhile, a more general overview. The thing about Five and Reginald is that Five has a fundamentally different relationship to his father from his siblings. His siblings can all safely and squarely point at Reginald as a) being the worst thing that has ever happened to them and b) the one responsible for ruining their individual lives. For Five however a) he has the apocalypse which is just clearly worse than the academy life (Iā€™m not trying to say that the academy life didnā€™t scar the other siblings for life or comparing trauma, Iā€™m just saying that however bad the academy was, at least they had food and alive human company) and he himself qualifies the Handler as being worse than Reginald (not to speak of the fact that his childhood lies back forty-five years, those are distant, distant memories, distorted by decades of monotonous apocalypse life and some very busy working years), and b) Reginald is demonstrably not responsible for ruining Fiveā€™s life - Five is, and he knows it. Itā€™s the ā€˜I told you soā€™-theme. Iā€™ve seen people blame Five ending up in the apocalypse squarely on Reginald, and while there is something to be said about upbringing and how Reginald dealt with Fiveā€™s more rebellious personality, in that moment, the agency is all with Five, Reginald didnā€™t really do anything wrong. He told Five that he shouldnā€™t try to time travel and told him exactly why (impossible to foresee the effects it could have on his body and his mind), and Five disregarded that and did it anyway.
So essentially, Reginald is not the villain figure to Five that he is to all of his brothers and sisters. Five does what none of his siblings do: he underestimates Reginald, underestimates his cruelty and ruthlessness, and does so massively. It is a very nice and deliberate touch of having the sibling that spent the least time with Reginald be the one who turned out most like him, while at the same time having Five be the sibling that managed to move past Reginald the most. Iā€™m not saying heā€™s unaffected by Reginald - he clearly isnā€™t - and he definitely suffered the same abuse as a kid, but he is the one for whom it is the least defining. It is both explicitly said in the show (S1E6 ā€œWho cares if dad messed us up? Are we gonna let that define us?ā€) and metaphorically, in the fact that Five is the only Hargreeves who is not technically a Hargreeves. I know we keep tagging him as ā€˜Five Hargreevesā€™ for organisational reasons here, but thatā€™s not actually his name. Five is ā€˜Number Fiveā€™, he is never referred to with Hargreeves as his last name, like his siblings are. He has made a name of his own, quite literally, by taking the number assigned to his existence as an experiment and becoming more than that, a legend in something that is completely apart from what his father intended. Five is very detached from Reginald as an actual being. It has been so long for him, so much has happened in-between, that he approaches him with a certain kind of distance, as a potentially very valuable source of information, having discarded (or maybe the memory has just faded), the things Reginald did to him, to his siblings. He underestimates Reginald, and he underestimates the severity of the effect his abuse had on his comparatively much younger siblings, which is, in the end, why they end up in a 2019 where cold, hard Reginald has rejected even the idea of their existence.
As for Reginaldā€™s view of Five, itā€™s a bit more difficult to interpret because we just see less of him, and know less about his personality and even less about his true intentions. We see little of their relationship in Season 1, and I think Five did comparatively fine under Reginald from what we see. He is naturally curious and willing to push his powers to test his limits, but also the one most ready to openly talk back to Reginald, which seems to faze Reginald little, indicating that it was a regular occurrence. During the fateful breakfast, Reginald doesnā€™t even bother looking at Five arguing for his right to time travel, until the moment that Five runs out and openly, directly defies him, and it would be the very first and very last defiance. This tells us very little, which is why I find Reginaldā€™s reaction to the Five we know even though he doesnā€™t know him in Season 2 so very, very fascinating, incidentally the same thing Reginald finds Five. There is a universe in difference between Reginald not sparing Five a glance at the breakfast table and them having a discussion on even terrain in the tiki bar. Iā€™m not going to delve too deep into the scene because thatā€™s for the post Iā€™m working on, but I think, for the first time in the show, Reginald looks at Five and sees someone to take seriously. Iā€™ve seen people suggest that Reginald was playing Five during that scene, that it was all an act, but I personally think that that interpretation makes that scene so much less interesting from a character perspective. Reginald entertains Fiveā€™s ideas, he takes him in earnest, and he seems genuinely sorry that he canā€™t help out. I donā€™t believe Reginald walked out of that bar with a bad opinion of Five. For a moment there, we see a glimpse of how Reginald acts with someone he gives at least basic human decency, and maybe even something that approaches respect, to. It doesnā€™t break Fiveā€™s illusion that Reginald isnā€™t the worst thing in the world, a sense of false security that makes the plot twist at the end of the season probably most shocking to him, because I think he never would have thought of Reginald just replacing them.
There is a very intriguing dynamic between Five and Reginald, one that lives less in extremes than it does for the other siblings. I think the point of this entire ramble is that Five and Reginald donā€™t dislike each other, and it makes for a very fascinating relationship where everything is open for the future, where this dynamic can develop further in narratively interesting and relevant ways. Five has enough distance from his abusive childhood (which, again, is not me saying that he has no repercussions from that, just that he has suffered different trauma and abuse on top of that and, letā€™s be real here, never had the opportunity to work through any of it) that he can approach Reginald different than his siblings, who are still very much and more acutely hurting, and this different approach allows him to get through to Reginald on a more personal, honest level than we have seen a sibling do before.

Once again they prove their lack of intellectual prowess.
Tumblr media
First, did they read the attached article or simply react viscerally to the general thought that Ben has no or little amounts of fans? Their own reblog? Number of Notes?
Tumblr media
They said 15. Generous indeed
BTW, the attached blog post has been removed with the blogger having gotten anon hate a day or two after it was posted on Gator's page. I wonder why it was removed? I also know that it happened to have been liberated from a nanny twitter.
Since it has been removed you'll have to do with the gist of my memories, although I'd prefer having the original to refer to @ashdoesfandom is free to send a note or comment if I get something wrong about their concept. It wasn't about the size of the fandom but about the extreme elements being only a fraction of the size of the true fandom but that they get all of the attention. However, in postulating that theory, that were making the point that extreme elements make up about 1% of the fandom. Being generous and giving the extreme elements of Cumberbatch fandom, both Skeptics and Nannies each 15 fans that makes 30 extreme fans total and cross multiply backwards to get the total number of active fans. That doesn't mean others don't appreciate his work, we are talking about fandom, people who participate. Math is not my strong suit.
Now that has nothing to do with whether his films sell or not but does show whether he is the Internet's boyfriend or not. But that is a bit more complicated then just like or dislike.
Then, there is this.
Tumblr media
(Quick note, only 8 notes on this post) The nannies hate Body Language posts. We reflect our own faults in others. Note the tags on the post closely.
Lie to Me was a fictional yes, but based on a real person. There are many body language experts.
And "here's what it says", WHAT Says? It appears to be a Wikipedia article and we all know how accurate they can be. It is kind of hard to dispute or agree with a reference when you don't have that reference.
Tumblr media
The argument being made isn't actually against body language. It is an argument being made for someone who is in the room influencing the person who they are reading, not invalidating the fundamental concepts of the science. When physical presence is not a factor, there is no issue being raised.
As far as confirmation bias, if you call someone a fucking moron, I think you have a bit of a bias. So proverbial pots should not talk about fucking confirmation bias.
Here is a list of a lot of people that make money analyzing body language for a living, some working for the government, including the man Lie To Me was based on. Here is an article about how we can use it everyday and how even experts can be wrong and disagree sometimes. After all, Judi James said that Sophie had no stage experience was unfamiliar with the spotlight and a shy, retiring type by her body language. But then I've never agreed with her interpretations. Of course I can disagree with her without calling her a fucking moron.
You want some science? There is a nice 2 hour Discovery Channel program on Body language. There are numerous Ted talks and books.
But you don't want science. Anyone looking at certain images can tell Ben has looked sad. Sophie had looked Angry and Sad. There is video of Sophie crying and running off a red carpet in a snit! You want to believe a fairy tale so body language doesn't exist because it disagrees with your point of view.
It's a true shame that fandom has become synonymous with fanatic. The word brings to mind excess, worship and zeal. No one should ever worship another person. That's wrong. When fandom becomes worship, that's too far. When you are harassing someone who isn't even in your fandom because their point of view may align your "enemy's" , that's wrong. When you "ship" real people, that's wrong. Despite whatever the nannies and haters may think of me, I have my own moral code. It's a shame that many others don't.
