not specific to one piece, and i know i've only been back for a little bit now, but honestly if there's anything i'd really like people to take away from my blog it's that every language and culture has the level of complexity that could lead a person to spend thousands of blog posts talking about the details of its translation.

i think english-speaking anime/manga fans can fall into the trap of attributing a unique level of complexity to japanese as a language, you know? which obviously isn't to say that there's anything wrong with thinking the japanese language is really cool or beautiful or interesting- it is all of those things! but, like, a story originally written in japanese doesn't lose more in translation than a story originally conceived in arabic or euskara or thai or navajo.

in every story you consume in translation, there are linguistic details that will be lost, that will not be neatly translatable, clever wordplay and subtle implications that translation just can't communicate.

and my point here isn't to be discouraging at all! i love reading poetry in translation! i love subtitled films! the proliferation of art is always to be encouraged! but if there's any language or any particular foreign-language work you've ever been curious about... hey, consider studying it! why not? the world is huge and beautiful and with every new word you learn you'll expand your own understanding of the range of human experience!

My favourite part's always if it's in a place that does the ceremony with the body on display 'n a coffin or something, so you can hide a weapon.

You just play dead until a good three quarters of the way through, right, after everyone's sure you're gone - then you scare the livin' daylights out of them all by jumping up. Usually they start screaming before you even start shooting, and then it's chaos with everyone trying'na escape. Classic.

Bonus points if I can rope in one of the others to give a suitably dramatic speech over my corpse, tears 'n all, before we blow the place to bloody pieces together.

becalmed: canon-compliant headcanon of ‘how did rocinante get his devil fruit?’, mostly comedy with some character study (1.2k)

act 3: scene exploration of chapter 1044 examining the fourth-wall-breaking interplay between luffy and hiyori’s climactic scenes (1.6k)

benn’s confusing, bewildering, no good, very odd early morning: comedy gear five time travel pov outsider oneshot set during shanks’s stay on dawn (4.4k)

against the kitchen floor: post-wano missing scene, luffy and sanji and the Suicidal Tendencies (1.3k)

when the blade hits the bone: zoro character story that is sort of about wano and sort of about demons and sort of about mortality (2.1k)

three-body problem: momo post-wano character study. it’s about dysphoria. also yamato is there (1.6k)

What do you think is Johnnys (devil not the writers) reasoning for loathing Orpheus so much? It just feels so strong yet I can't pin down an exact reasoning

I feel like narratively Jonny and Orpheus are complete opposites;

Jonny’s whole persona is openly, aggressively (& frequently homicidally) detached from any sort of sentimentality. Has to kill his dad? who cares, he totally wasn’t effected by that. Doc is gone? couldn’t give less of a shit, no emotional turmoil there. All of the people he’s lost, and the painful deaths he’s suffered over uncountable centuries as an immortal? dust in the wind, couldn’t matter less.

Meanwhile Orpheus is sentimental to the point of being boarderline useless without his lady love. He tried Absolutely EVERYTHING to reach her again, from requesting to speak to her mind in the achaeron, to unsuccessfully attempting unaliving himself, to stockpiling HIGHLY ILLEGAL BRAIN MELTING ACID as a backup plan, and then eventually asking Hades for help and joining the UDAD plot as we know it. He’s a loverboy through and through and wears his heart on his sleeve.

To me i think that Jonny is, at heart (lmao ironic), much more similar to Orpheus than he would like any of us to believe- and there are definitely moments where I personally feel that you can see glimpses of that. but he has spent eons creating this untouchable, unaffected “captain” persona (that absolutely None of the mechs are buying btw but he is trying so lets all give him some points for effort) and seeing someone living that life so openly and authentically without any subterfuge is bound to strike a nerve.
