not specific to one piece, and i know i've only been back for a little bit now, but honestly if there's anything i'd really like people to take away from my blog it's that every language and culture has the level of complexity that could lead a person to spend thousands of blog posts talking about the details of its translation.

i think english-speaking anime/manga fans can fall into the trap of attributing a unique level of complexity to japanese as a language, you know? which obviously isn't to say that there's anything wrong with thinking the japanese language is really cool or beautiful or interesting- it is all of those things! but, like, a story originally written in japanese doesn't lose more in translation than a story originally conceived in arabic or euskara or thai or navajo.

in every story you consume in translation, there are linguistic details that will be lost, that will not be neatly translatable, clever wordplay and subtle implications that translation just can't communicate.

and my point here isn't to be discouraging at all! i love reading poetry in translation! i love subtitled films! the proliferation of art is always to be encouraged! but if there's any language or any particular foreign-language work you've ever been curious about... hey, consider studying it! why not? the world is huge and beautiful and with every new word you learn you'll expand your own understanding of the range of human experience!

What do you think is Johnnys (devil not the writers) reasoning for loathing Orpheus so much? It just feels so strong yet I can't pin down an exact reasoning

I feel like narratively Jonny and Orpheus are complete opposites;

Jonny’s whole persona is openly, aggressively (& frequently homicidally) detached from any sort of sentimentality. Has to kill his dad? who cares, he totally wasn’t effected by that. Doc is gone? couldn’t give less of a shit, no emotional turmoil there. All of the people he’s lost, and the painful deaths he’s suffered over uncountable centuries as an immortal? dust in the wind, couldn’t matter less.

Meanwhile Orpheus is sentimental to the point of being boarderline useless without his lady love. He tried Absolutely EVERYTHING to reach her again, from requesting to speak to her mind in the achaeron, to unsuccessfully attempting unaliving himself, to stockpiling HIGHLY ILLEGAL BRAIN MELTING ACID as a backup plan, and then eventually asking Hades for help and joining the UDAD plot as we know it. He’s a loverboy through and through and wears his heart on his sleeve.

To me i think that Jonny is, at heart (lmao ironic), much more similar to Orpheus than he would like any of us to believe- and there are definitely moments where I personally feel that you can see glimpses of that. but he has spent eons creating this untouchable, unaffected “captain” persona (that absolutely None of the mechs are buying btw but he is trying so lets all give him some points for effort) and seeing someone living that life so openly and authentically without any subterfuge is bound to strike a nerve.

the way Madam E talks is in fact Incredibly Extra (alex said somewhere that yeah duh that was the point) but also.

as a person who sits in a pretty diverse classroom of 12-14 year olds all day.

some of the Kids These Days do in fact talk like that. All the time. To everyone. No matter what. Front-facing camera not required.

The other day one of the individual-units-of-chaos-for-whom-I-am-responsible-for-8-hours-each-weekday asked if I had done anything fun over the weekend and I said "oh I just went for a short hike in the national park" and he straight up did this:

like. LIKE. madam E's tone. her inflection. her little trill on the end of words... some of the slang was a tad dated (though that does sort of make sense, if Madam E is ~5-10 years older than my gremlins-disguised-as-preteens) but I literally got whiplash every three minutes because all I could visualize for Madam E was a rotating cast of the like. Seven of my kiddos who talk EXACTLY like that.

which I WILL SAY. did make the horror hit home Just A Bit More Than Usual.

What are you reporting?: Injury to Civilians, Damage to Property, Containment Breach. When did it happen?  Afternoon of August 4th. Where did it happen: LWB. Basement Level. Cold Storage. Witnesses:  JH and PVH did not witness all of the event, but did arrive near the end to stop the breach with the Extraction Team. Who was involved:  Two children, 15 and 11. What happened: Two children entered the Cold Storage area, which is off limits to all civilians. [REDACTED] knocked into one of the Asset Containment Pods, waking Asset Six from her comatose state and causing her to break out of her containment. She attacked both children. This event was caught on CCTV, and an Extraction Team was able to intervene before she could cause any further damage to the room, or to the children. The youngest, [REDACTED], reports that he became lost in the building, that [REDACTED] went looking for him, and that it was his fault the incident occurred. However, [REDACTED] has been made aware on multiple occasions that Cold Storage is off limits and should not have allowed his younger cousin to indulge in exploring the Westenra building. Was there any injury to account for: [REDACTED]’s chest was severely lacerated. He was taken to hospital for assessment, but the damage is mostly cosmetic. [REDACTED] sustained a large cut across his right arm, which has been tended to by one of our medics on standby. Actions going forward: -THF will cover any private medical costs for [REDACTED], with the proviso that he is never allowed to enter the Westenra building again. -The Asset Pods will be evaluated for any future sleep disturbance.  -All Asset Containment Pods will be assessed for further ‘wear and tear’. - This will not be allowed to happen again.  Form completed by: JH
