Unveiling Greatness: Tony Esposito's Breakout Performance for the Chicago Blackhawks
Tony Esposito was acquired by the Chicago Blackhawks from the Montreal Canadiens during the off-season before the 1969-70 NHL season. The Blackhawks, along with Tony, had a rough beginning to the 1969-70 campaign, starting with a record of 0-5-1 in their first six games. Tony played in a 7-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues and a 4-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
However, things began to improve on October 25, 1969, when the Blackhawks visited the Canadiens at the Montreal Forum. Esposito, who had played his first 13 NHL games with the Canadiens in the 1968-69 season and recorded his first of 76 NHL shutouts with them in a 1-0 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers, turned away all 30 shots for his first shutout and win as a Chicago Blackhawk. Meanwhile, Montreal goalie Rogie Vachon allowed five goals on just 20 shots, resulting in a 5-0 loss.
This game marked the beginning of an extraordinary season for Tony, who went on to achieve 15 shutouts and earned the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie. Lou Angotti scored the game-winning goal at 4:14 of the first period, with assists from Eric Nesterenko and Pat Stapleton. Angotti also assisted on Eric Nesterenko's goal, and Dennis Hull contributed a goal and an assist.
Additionally, history was made in the third period when Keith Magnuson and Marc Tardif engaged in their first NHL fight at 16:13.

A look at the 1964-65 Topps 20 NHL hockey card featuring Bobby Hull of the Chicago Blackhawks.
This set was called “The Tall Boys” for it’s unconventional card dimensions.
The back of the card has the foresight to reference Bobby’s “kid brother” Dennis. The up and coming Dennis Hull would go on to play nearly 1,000 games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings.
