St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada: St. John's is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located on the eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. The city spans 446.04 km2 and is the easternmost city in North America. Its name has been attributed to the belief that John Cabot sailed into the harbour on the Nativity of John the Baptist in 1497, although it is most likely a legend that came with British settlement. Newfoundland and Labrador's post-secondary institutions have teamed up with an organization that can find housing for students, while helping to curb loneliness of seniors with room to spare.  SpacesShared, an online platform that helps pair seniors with empty rooms in their homes with students, has recently been launched in Newfoundland and Labrador. CEO Rylan Kinnon says the app uses an algorithm to match compatible students with older hosts interested in home sharing. "These are longer-term living relationships. We verify the host identity and their address. We verify the student's identity and that they are in fact enrolled at a post secondary institution," he said.  "Once they've actually connected through the platform, we support them. We check in with them a week after the student moves in and every month and if we identify any issues through that survey, we follow up with a phone call."

The Town of Labrador City has been ordered to evacuate as a nearby out-of-control fire draws closer to the town.
The provincial government says the fire has the potential to grow significantly closer to Labrador West over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Residents are told to stay updated on local media and news reports.
With three fires threatening Labrador communities, residents are being warned to be on guard, with continued hot and dry conditions in the forecast set to potentially make them worse.
There are currently 11 fires in Labrador, one of them near Wabush and Happy Valley-Goose Bay in western Labrador and another near Happy Valley-Goose Bay in central Labrador, with smoke potentially affecting visibility on roads and rail lines.

This is from circa 2005. We went on a big trip through Maine, into New Brunswick where we saw the bay of fundy, and then through Nova Scotia, finally by a ferry boat to Newfoundland.

Fort Amherst, St. John's, Canada: Fort Amherst is a neighbourhood in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located on the southern side of the Narrows, the entrance to St. John's harbour. Apart from some family dwellings, Fort Amherst consists of a man-made harbour, a lighthouse and the remains of gun emplacements built during World War II to defend against German U-boats. Two QF 4.7-inch B Mark IV* guns remain in place on their mountings. Wikipedia

The Innu Nation has launched a class-action lawsuit against the government of Canada and the Newfoundland and Labrador government, seeking compensation for Indigenous day school survivors in Sheshatshiu, Natuashish and the former community of Davis Inlet. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Innu who attended the schools, which were funded by the Canadian government, and overseen by the province from 1949, when Newfoundland joined Confederation, to 2009. The lawsuit argues children suffered from physical, sexual, emotional and cultural abuse while at the schools.
