Ninjago... Dead or Not Dead?

I'm here to discuss whether "new" Ninjago is better than "old" Ninjago, or vice versa. I see so many opinions float around, and some comments people make are extremely harsh or confusing. For my own claims, don't worry, I'll back them up with evidence and genuine consideration.

I would like to start by saying that I started watching Ninjago when it first came out in 2011. I was around 8 years old at the time. My younger siblings soon became invested in the show, and we watched it together. There are seven seasons total that I would consider "old" Ninjago that aired from 2011-2017. About a year later, what I would call "new" Ninjago aired with seasons 8-15. Dragons Rising is the current Ninjago show.

I have almost finished Dragons Rising. So, yes, I am aware of all the little details and therefore ready to provide my own thoughts. I am an old Ninjago fan at heart and grew up with the show, but if I'm to have an opinion about what's new I might as well know what I'm talking about.

New Ninjago fans say that old Ninjago fans are "blinded by nostalgia" and old Ninjago fans say that new Ninjago fans don't understand the point of the show.

Ok, first of all, is "old" Ninjago perfect? No, of course not. The fight scenes are extremely slow at times. The animation? Less detailed. As a kid, I didn't really care. As an adult, sure, it's painful to watch. However, animation is such a small part of any show, and there is more to life than things that are aesthetically pleasing, especially when it comes to criticism. On a deeper, plot-centered level, "old" Ninjago surpasses "new" Ninjago. You cannot watch "old" Ninjago and tell me that the plots aren't creative and exciting, with a good balance of humor, brotherhood, and pain. "New" Ninjago, for the most part, was pretty decent and added depth to the characters. I liked Lloyd's new voice actor. Some aspects of "new" Ninjago irked me, like Kai's lack of emotion when Nya quite literally became one with the ocean, Kai losing his powers yet again and wallowing in self-pity, or Cole becoming more and more of an insignificant character with few lines, save season 13.

The biggest thing, though, was lack of creativity and a shift in character development that is unneeded or backwards. Characters can develop, sure, but they shouldn't be an entirely new personality without cause. The ninja were extremely weak or extremely overpowered. In reality, they should remember most of what they've learned and continue to grow.

Dragons Rising is - pardon my aggression - a piece of crap. Now, I think it had promise in the beginning, and I was excited with the introduction of new characters.

Arin and Sora have distinct personalities and interesting backgrounds. It went downhill pretty quickly. I dislike Wyldfyre with a passion. A Kai and Skylor alliance would have been better. Not only does Wyldfyre act like she's consumed ten energy drinks, but she's wrecked Kai's personality. Their banter is humorous and realistic, but shouldn't Kai know how to handle an impulsive person? Lloyd was practically their little brother in "old" Ninjago. Kai was impulsive and confident in his own actions, perhaps even a little "mean" to Lloyd when Lloyd needed a serious wake up call, but he never purposefully put Lloyd in danger. He was willing to take the hit in a lot of situations. Now, we see him running away screaming his head off while Wyldfyre is throwing hands. Kai... you've faced worse than a giant rock monster, buddy. The humor in Dragons Rising makes me want to tear my hair out sometimes. I get it's a kid show, but they could do better. "Old" Ninjago had some pretty grim details, but there was always a ray of hope or humor that just made sense in the moment. Mainly, the ninja being true brothers and absolutely roasting each other. In comparison, the humor in Dragons Rising is forced and cliche.

"I guarantee the sewers won't have any security."

I'm not saying that "old" Ninjago doesn't come with its own share of cliche humor, I'm just saying that it's significantly less compared to Dragons Rising. It's also sprinkled, not dumped.

So, Arin and Sora get the spotlight, and the ninja seem to weaken more and more every day.

If you're a new Ninjago fan, I can see why Dragons Rising wouldn't bother you, though I would question your sanity if you found the cliche humor even remotely funny every single time. But the ninja aren't themselves. "Old" Ninjago gave us characters with exaggerated personalities for a reason, and "new" Ninjago provided some interesting plots with improved animation. "New" Ninjago is where it should have ended, and Dragons Rising can rot for all I care. The more I see Dragons Rising ignore or discount previous lore, the less I want to give it a chance.

At the end of October it will be exactly 2 years since I started self-training in digital art, and back in the middle of this month #redraw my first art 🗓️:)

I love that this is the very first and very last art from my phone xD I mean, after draw it last time, I got a new, more powerful device and new artworks started coming out a lot better. So talking time. I was into Ninjago since like 2013. I got my first art tablet in like 2015 and it had 0 and i mean 0 pen pressure. Which didn't help that my process was basically copying other cooler people. Most of these came out 2017-2018 Like damn i remember Erraday, artcanary, maypong, blackcat(this one might be wrong it was a while ago.) Some older ones i forgot the name of. When the nindroid jay comic was out. "Proselytized"from Prpldragon.

I am just floored that i'm still here. And HOLY SHIT ART PROGRESS

For the record this blog is not that old. This blog was started in like 2020 after i accidentally deleted my entire fucking account. But that one was started in 2018 and before that I had another account as like Ninjaofsugar? ninjaofmagics? i don't remember from like 2016. And no you won't recognize my art, it was shit back then and very sporadic. Took me a long ass time to find myself. And build a style that wasn't following tutorials or borrowing cheats from others' speedpaints. Seriously I had like 6 different art/identity crisis' depending on who i was following at the time. like tinylightningninja, wlop, ryky, squira130, spinningninjas, rossdraws, feefal, ProNastya, Sakimichan, ninja-tiddy, and others lmao. So yeah. If you squint at my art now you can see exactly which artist inspired different pieces of my art. My self indulgent gradient of peach to blue, too many sparkles, body proportions, hair styling, etc. All eventually molded into something that is completely me while also being like 20 other things. lol

Umm also about to hit 1k (which has never happened to me before holy shit! i think ill do a dtiy with prizes this time.) Before i didn't have prizes cause i fear commitment and have a fear of failure. BUT i'm better now so yeah. Coffees1k Lets GO!

Okino became more cognizant while he was with the ninja. He's also going to Go Thru It. He learned so much, and he gained so much more. Gained more Trauma, that is.

Unagami is an AI that gathered some consciousness. He did.

Unagami wants to go to Ninjago to find Milton Dyer. He did, and he was reunited with his dad after they had an emotional talk. The emotional one was me. I'm a wreck.

The ninja being out of credits will be important later. Meanwhile, in the very next episode...

The race is going to be the next episode. It was!

Rescue mission to recover Zane from the Mechanic. Surprisingly, yes, in the same episode as the background of Milton and Unagami.

Unagami is going to visit Ninjago, and he's going to bring some friends. It's not going to go well for Ninjago. The city has been in worse shapes after the final battle, but there was some damage. And people might have been injured.

We're going to lose Nya. She got rubix cubed, just like everybody else.

It will be a few more episodes before the rest of the ninja make it into Prime Empire. They made it in during the very next episode.

The motherboard needs to be inserted back into the arcade game for everyone to be able to return to Ninjago. A giant gateway also works.

It'll be a hot minute before the other ninja find Jay in Prime Empire. They were told where to find him in the very end of the next episode.

The League of Jay will be helpful down the line. They really just helped out that 1 time and that was it. We were cheated out of some more Jays all season.

Unagami is an old enemy with a new alias. Boy was I wrong there.

Lloyd will be the first ninja to lose all his lives. *crying about Cole and Kai*

The ninja are going to return to Scott's garage to find it trashed and him missing. He was alive and well, until Seven showed up.

Time flows different in Prime Empire than it does in Ninjago. I thought I had something, but it was a nothing.

Everyone will leave Prime Empire using the inter-dimensional arcade portals. Apparently, I never said anything about the gate in my main prediction posts (which I go off, not my opener "what's this ep gonna be about" post), sooooo... yeah.

Zane's not going to come out of this whole thing ok. He was able to shake it off faster than Taylor Swift.

Kai and Scott will lose their last life. Kai doing something stupid, and Scott in the race. They both did lose their last life, but Scott sacrificed himself for the ninja and Kai and Cole both lost their last life during the race.

We're going to lose someone during the race. We lost 2 someones.

The level to get the third Keytana will be a fighter game. It was a platform game + infinity maze + fighter game.

It's going to come down to Jay vs. Unagami. Yes, but mostly no.

Unagami paid attention to the ninja back on Ninjago. It wasn't ever confirmed how Unagami clocked the ninja as his enemies before they arrived in Prime Empire, but the Mechanic might have been the person informing him about the ninja. He might have informed Unagami of everything the ninja have done.

Hello! I'm glad you like it :) It's not easy trying to figure out what to call a heritage post in a 13 year old fandom, but a little combo of Ninjago fandom hijacking other posts, Lloyd VS Antigone category events, deep diving 10 years on old URLs, and feedback from fandom veteran friends helps out with that. Some posts I may have skipped over until being told they were part of the ancient scripture the ninboomers bonded over back in the day, so I'm glad to hear this blog has helped you rediscover old posts! That's very much the goal, and I'm happy to see it be relatively successful :D Some people have found posts they only saw through google images and I hope to somehow, continue to magically unearth old posts lol. Since I have no way to gauge what a post might mean to someone, unless if it's something archivable like the first origin of a ship name or fandom inside joke. That's worth heritage posting since it's historical, but since we're not like the Pokemon fandom that gets a new heritage post every week by sheer number of notes and instant infamy, I have to vibe check most of the time :')
