#new mutants 2020

In preparation for Deadpool & Wolverine, my mom (who is a big fan of the Deadpool movies) watched The New Mutants with me today. She’d never seen it before, but she’s known since it was announced that it was a hyperfixation of mine, which turned into a special interest as the release date was continually pushed.

She looked pained when I asked her what she thought of it afterwards, as she tried to choose words that wouldn’t break my heart. “You can be honest, really,” I assured her.

“I didn’t think it was that great,” she reluctantly said, bracing herself for my reaction.

I grinned. “No, you’re right. It’s really not that great.”

I gave her the brief rundown of why it holds such interest to me regardless—the source material, the Murphy’s Law of it all, the kiss thirty-five years in the making, the nerdy accomplishment I felt from having sniffed out cast members before they were officially announced, deducing plot elements, and tracking down the promotional merchandise—and she nodded along. It was not all that interesting to her, but she could understand why it would be right up my alley.

Her final comment was this: “I love the puppet. The puppet was the best. I get why you had to have him.”

So, actually, we agreed on everything.

People have been saying this for, legitimately, 2 decades

Just because characters don’t act like how you and your siblings act, or they don’t act like how you want siblings to act, does NOT mean they are inaccurate. This can apply to so many things like neurodivergence, disabilities, relationships, etc

Just because the dynamic isn’t accurate to you, doesn’t mean it’s not accurate

I have siblings, and personally, the 2012 version is probably closest to how me and my siblings act. But you don’t see me saying “2012 has the most accurate depiction” because families are different!

If I had a nickel for every time Charlie Heaton played a wet-alley-cat-looking sad boy with complicated family trauma opposite a conventionally attractive pseudo-jerk jock with a secret soft heart and a badass girl who is Fucking Intense and gone “…they should definitely all date” I’d have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it happened twice
