not sure if any mutuals out there are alvin and the chipmunks fans but when i was ill i started watching the cartoon show and i carried on watching cause honestly it was fun. and i've just finished it so i've got to say... at least in the show, i think eleanor and alvin would be a better couple than eleanor/theodore and brittany/alvin...
like okay so eleanor is very much the most emotionally mature one of the chipettes and she's quite into politics and stuff but also enjoys going to the skate park and playing football, plus she does find alvin's pranks funny but also has a go at him when he goes too far but in a way that's just like "don't be a prat, but i'll help you resolve this mess".
and alvin is probably the least emotionally mature of his brothers (maybe on par with theodore, idk), and he enjoys football and going to skate parks and stuff but we do also see him encouraging and cheering on his brothers and dave and chipettes when they have achievements. also there's so many episodes where eleanor has a problem so he goes and helps her as hard as he can. like if they can't figure something out themselves they go to each other for help <33 (unless its more something that they need stem nerds simon and jeanette for tho)
like also they both bitch the most about their siblings (especially with each other!!) so i can imagine them literally just gossiping about people all the time and having each other as someone to confide in when people are pissing them off (cause they literally are already that for each other)
plus that episode where britt and alvin do that soulmate test and get each other and absolutely hate it and alvin imagines life with brittany being her making him carry loads of shopping and wear pink instead of red and stuff and britt imagines life with alvin being alvin hogging the spotlight and not letting her be a popstar anymore. and tbf that def isn't what it'd be like 💀 cause ofc alvin is going to just refuse britt and ofc britt is just going to ignore alvin.
but alvin and eleanor??? like i can def see them being together in the future and although their main career is obviously their own bands, eleanor would prob do coaching in one of her hobbies or something (since she enjoys it a lot) and alvin would do like professional skateboarding competitions and stuff, but they'd also like go on adventure weekends and stuff and they'd pick up random hobbies together and get super competitive with each other but cause they find it fun!!
also alvin and britt would sooo not work out. they both love the spotlight too much, it'd be constantly fighting for attention and refusing to give it to each other, plus britt is very neat and tidy whilst alvin is absolutely not but brit would refuse to clean after alvin and alvin would refuse to constantly have to tidy up and again, they'd jusy argue.
and with eleanor and theodore, it's more just a matter of eleanor finding him very sweet but she enjoys competitions and debates and theodore is just going to follow along whatever she says. plus theodore would hate all of eleanor's active hobbies (like i remember she's into fencing and stuff whilst theodore would be terrified of all that)
obviously i can feel people saying "oh but now theodore and brittany are alone" okay, so 1. not everyone needs to be paired up in relationships, 2. i also feel like brittany is the kind of person to be like "i'm the hottest, coolest, most interesting chipmunk around, why would i need someone else when i have myself?", also 3. britt is soooo either aroace or a lesbian, also 4. theodore may date sure, but show eleanor ain't a good match for him

Headcannons for Simon Seville ships because I did one for Alvin and am working on one for Theodore :)
Simonette my beloved
- Hate the paparazzi and always try to avoid them at all costs
- Both are very private people but will post together for each other's birthdays
- Hate PDA, the most they'll do in public is hold hands and sometimes hug
- Temple & hand kisses mean more to them than kisses on the lips
- Turn into house nurses when the other is sick (even if it's a slight cough)
- Whenever Jeanette makes tea she makes two cups, one for her and one for Simon
- Simon prefers tea but will drink coffee to stay up and finish projects, Jeanete knowing this will sometimes give him decaf so he doesn't stay up fot too long
- Simon buys her crystals since she's into astrology
- Jeanette will buy books she knows Simon would like
- Every so often they'll both read the same book to talk about it, like a private book club
- Valentines Day means pretty much a regular day with some small meaningful gifts and homemade candlelit dinner (because restaurants are so expensive on that day, they often make dinner together)
- Share clothes (mostly jackets) and always return them
- Both are very careful defensive drivers, Simon won't go a single mhp over the speed limit, Jeanette will stop to let animals and worms cross the road
- Simon: So sorry to bother but huh, we actually asked for no pickles.
Jeanette: We're so sorry to bother, really.
- Simon calls Jeanette "darling", "dear", "sweetheart", "dear heart" & "mon coeur"
- Jeanette calls Simon "honey", "sweetie", "dear" & "Simo" (pronounced See-moh)
Tumblr media
Brimon yes ofc
- Simon "introverted gentle giant nerd" & Brittany "prom queen social butterfly" are always stalked by the paps and the couple always try to loose them
- Once Brittany threw her shoe at a camara for zooming in on them
- Simon is very gentle and patient with drunk Brittany
- Brittany lives to make Simon blush and fluster
- Brittany can't drive for the life of her but is very impatient when Simon is driving because he's so slow (Simon: Brittany it's the law!
Brittany: Simon we are late!
Simon, under his breath: And who's fault is that...)
- Spend Valentines Day pampering each other
- Brittany sometimes takes Simon's glasses and tries them on, then jokes about how blind he is
- Simon loves to see Brittany with her hair down, literally can't say no to her when she lets her strawberry blonde loose
- Brittany never returns Simon's shirts/hoodies but he doesn't mind
- Brittany will sometimes call Simon and ask him if he wants another book because she's at the store near the book isle
- Simon buys jewelry and shoes for Brittany
- Brittany has forced him into wearing matching outfits and has made him wear pink during a concert once (the tabloids went crazy after that one)
- One time during a concert she got cold and Simon lended her his jacket (the tabloids loved that one)
- Brittany: Hey! You imbecile! He asked for NO pickles!
Simon: Brittany it's fine -
Brittany: Does this look like no pickles to you?!
Simon, under his breath: Britt nooooo...
- Simon calls Brittany "darling", "dear", "ma chérie" & "Bri"
- Brittany calls Simon "babe", "handsome", "cherry" & "Simba" (Simba began as a joke)(cherry is her way of matching his ma chérie)
Tumblr media
Simonor (does anyone actually ship them?)
- Eleanor isn't too fond of the paparazzi and as such always tries to loose them and confuse them
- Eleanor likes physical touch but will avoid it in public since she knows Simon doesn't like PDA
- Simon will search everything about Ellie's favorite sports to talk to her about it and understand the games She makes him watch with her
- Once went as beauty and the beast for Halloween
- Eleanor likes mending clothes, and when she mends Simon's she usually leaves a heart on that spot
- She will either bake things just for him or make a slighty bigger batch so there's some left for him to take
- Valentines Day is spent alone with one another and Eleanor always bakes a cake for it
- Simon sends carefully crafted, well written, grammatically correct texts and Eleanor always text in lowercase (even names) with the most random abreviations and most god awful mistakes because she refuses to enable the autocorret much to Simon's annoyance
- Both of them find the height difference hilarious
- Eleanor will sometimes make the "how's the weather up there?" joke or say something like "sorry, can't hear you from down here"
- Simon has to forcibly stop Eleanor from flipping people off
- He's been teaching Eleanor to speak other languages
- Simon has forbidden Eleanor from driving because of her terrible road rage (it legitimately scares him)
- Eleanor: Do you even understand, do you even know what 'no pickles' means?!
Simon: It's an honest mistake and-
Eleanor, ignoring: Because he clearly asked for no pickles, and you gave him extra!!!
Simon, hiding under his hoodie's hood: *exaspherated sigh*
- Simon calls Eleanor "sweetheart", "darling", "mon amour" & "Nore"
- Eleanor calls Simon "hightower", "charming" & "Sissy"
Tumblr media
Next and final one will be posted in a few days (I hope) when I finish drawing it. Also this is a fun exercice to train drawing clothes and specifically each of the Chipmunks & Chipettes styles.

Okay, but can we talk about this one Christmas scene in BBC Sherlock S2E2?
Let's take a look at this one dialog that occured when John needs to stay with Sherlock to comfort him after Irene's death and his girlfriend is upset:
"You're a great boyfriend!" "Okay, that's good. I mean, I always thought I was great-" "And Sherlock Holmes is a very lucky man." "Oh, Jeanette please"
John has his priorities and it's very obvious to everyone involved (even tho I do think that staying with your best friend after the death of a person who was important to him is a valid reason to miss a celebration) I suppose it just was the last straw for her
"No, I mean it. It's heartwarming. You'll do anything for him. And he can't even tell your girlfriends apart!"
The fact that John's love is so unconditional he doesn't even care if Sherlock returns it reminds me so much of this one episode of Doctor Who where River Song compared loving Doctor to loving sun: "You don't expect the sun to love you back!" or something like this, I don't remember the quote and it breaks my heart so much.
(Yes I did a wholock reference, what are you gonna do about it?)
And I also see here how much he tries to move on knowing that sun will not love him back but he just can't.
"No, I'll do anything for you, just tell me what it is, I'm not doing, tell me!" "Don't make me compete with Sherlock Holmes!"
This quote is so important because even Jeanette knows and understands the entirety of the situation John's in.
Compete with Sherlock Holmes is something nobody can do (all his enemies get defeated as we know) but not only villians are a threat, even loved ones will always be on a second place for John. The first place is forever taken by this one nerd not knowing the Earth is moving around the Sun (even tho he's the sun himself).
"I'll walk your dog for you. There, I've said it now, I'll even walk your dog." "I don't have a dog!" "No, because that was the last one- Okay."
Even John himself admits his defeat and realises what he got himself into.
(He did marry Mary eventually, and even tho I love her character, I can't help but see her being another one of "escapes" for John.)
Please don't witchhunt me for "hating on straight ships" or whatever, complain at the directors and writers who made John so unbearably closeted any other of his ships just doesn't sail (pun fully intended).
All I see here is a man desperately stuck in his one-sided feelings and fear of being out, he goes through the struggle a lot of queer people experienced in their life.
Yes, it's been done many times before, but I can't help but say that the production crew are cowards for not making John canonically queer when his writing is so authentic it makes me experience almost physical pain.
Coming back to the topic of Mary btw, I think it was fucking lame in the way her destiny turned out to be. She deserved to have a good life with loving husband and a child, but writers put her in the story just to make John not so openly queer coded (bi and pan people exist btw but it's a topic for another conversation unfortunately) and they just killed her off to "sail" the johnlock ship in the end because they are cowards to actually follow through with queerbaiting (that's what the quotes for, because they haven't actually sailed it). I hate, and I mean HATE when a woman is added to a story just for a man's character development and gets killed off and BBC's Sherlock situation is exactly like this. Why even add her to the story if you don't plan on making her stay with John? The last season makes no sense and makes me so angry I often pretend it doesn't exist "BOO TOMATOES TOMATOES-" (it's the reason I don't want any new Sherlock seasons tbh)
Okay, this post is all over the place, at this point I'm more just ranting instead of doing a proper topic analysis but I hope you liked it anyway. Share your opinion if you have any, ig the Sherlock tag is too full at this point I don't really see people taking about stuff while checking the tag (saying this as if the first season didn't come out like 13 years ago)
Have a good day :)

OK, I just sent a long ask a second ago, but I really have more to ask in this one is actually like an opinion based one I swear ‼️
OK, so like what are your best renditions of the Alvin and the Chipmunks characters?? I’m a be honest I’ve been in this fandom since like 2023 or like at least an active person is in this community and I still haven’t really watched like the old show and like the old old show (the alvin show) but I think I could form well opinions of them.
I also wanted to ask if you were writing the characters what traits would you keep them or what traits would you keep out?
OK, so for me my favorite Alvin is like Alvin from Frankenstein cause I feel like he’s kind of like 3D Alvin and then like the chipmunks Alvin smooshed together if that makes sense? I like the version of him that I hate the most is like the nickelodeon show him because he’s just like trouble like every episode. I watched that show even though it’s funny he’s always doing something and he’s always manipulating Theodore and it makes me angry. 😭
and like for Simon, I think my favorite rendition of him may be the 3-D movies and maybe I’m bias a bit and like I haven’t really watched the old show at all, but I feel like the old show makes them too much of a nerd. I’m like in a 3-D version. He’s just like a silly little guy and I like love him so much 🤗
OK, for Theodore I really like him like the chipmunks show I feel like he’s not too innocent and not to like food hungry then and I just like how cute cute he is .(i’m basically most of my opinions on the movies of like 2-D but like I feel like he was kind of like that hopefully)
and for like brittany I will say the chipmunk show 100% because she was such a diva like oh my gosh every episode that I watch with her she always ate down and did not play. I really like her being like more snarky than helping not saying that Alvin is snarky, but I like how she is a mean girl at core like what happened to making mean characters and divas? like this thing happened with Monster High two in like the reboot which I honestly don’t really care for, but they made like Cleo/Torelai not a mean girl anymore and I was kind of sad by that cause I’m not saying we should be giving our kids the idea to grow up mean butttt they should know some baddies fre😭 I would’ve also said like the 3-D show but sometimes she gives me wannabe vibes and you can’t wanna be the mean girl that you’re supposed to be you gotta be the mean girl.
for Eleanor, it’s probably a mix of the 3-D show and the Chipmunks show only because I like how snarky she is in the 3-D show and I know she may have been a little Starky in the chipmunks show, but I haven’t watched it but like I feel like she was probably more creative back then and like I really hate how the movies just made her another Theodore with the green and not a teal. It just made me angry, but both shows made her have traits so I just need to put those two shows together to make her traits stronger.
and Jeanette, I’m gonna say the 3-D show because I just love how weird she is like there’s one episode where it’s her birthday and like the guys like trick her to think that she has like a magic wand and I just love that about her like she definitely be Harry Potter and like we just need weird cute girls nowadays ‼️‼️
AND YEAHH that’s just a treat that I like and like what rendition of the characters I like, but I really wanna know what your answer is for like if you are writing a show and stuff because I know like in a discord server, you all have like a a server called when we buy the chipmunks and I really like opening it to see what you guys wanna do about it personally, I have said a few things in there that I would want to show everyone agree with me btw, everybody in that server is so nice!! I didn’t really talk that much this year in the server but next year or like starting now I wanna try to be more active member to community
Hi again! Thanks for the ask!
Both Sapphire and I prefer the 80's designs and personalities, and our versions of them in the fic are highly inspired by those despite the modern setting. We both see them as more humanized though, so you will notice them being described as closer to human height (though still below average), and they don't have as much fur or animal-like characteristics per say.
As for personalities, I think that's pretty clear in the character interactions and choices in our fic. I can't speak for Sapphire ofc, but I know that I imagine Brittany to be sassy and self-absorbed, but passionate and protective. Alvin is also protective and can be caring, but is still your typical arrogant troublemaker. Eleanor is the most fun for me since she's interpreted in so many different ways. My Eleanor is still motherly and nurturing like in the 80's series, but is also stubborn and sassy as well like Brittany. She's very sick and tired of everyone's shit, likewise to Simon.
I'll add Sapphire's response later if he wants! He's probably asleep right now :).

My current, loose and not that interesting goal for this year is to really work on the books I have current access to right now... at the start of this year. Because it's a lot XD This means books currently favorite in Scribd, on my StoryGraph 'to read' pile, or a book I currently own on my shelves. Main goal is at least one of these a month.
For my own personal reference, I'm putting a list of such books below to hold myself accountable.
Edit: Now the end of 2023, and here's a breakdown of my goal to read books I already had access to at the start of 2023:
I didn't read one a month per se, but I got more than 12 done, so I call this a win. These books are:
-Can't Spell Treason Without Tea - Rebecca Thorn -The City Beautiful - Aden Polydoros -Finn Mac Cool - Morgan Llewlyn -The First Sister by Linden A Lewis (proceeded by the other two in the series) -Get a Life, Chloe Brown - Talia Hibbert -The Glass Castle - Jeannette Walls -Haunted Wisconsin - Michael Norman & Beth Scott -Her Majesty's Royal Coven - Juno Dawson -I Await the Devil's Coming - Mary McClane -The Kraken's Sacrifice - Katee Robert -Lavinia - Ursula K Le Guin -Love Her or Lose Her - Tessa Bailey -Mistress of the Art of Death - Ariana Franklin -Nevada - Imogen Binnie -The Prince - Niccolo Machiavelli -Rosemary and Rue - Seanan McGuire -The Ruins - Scott Smith -The Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller -Sarah - J.T. LeRoy -Vampire Forensics - Mark Collins Jenkins -What Happened to You? - Oprah Winfrey -The Witch King - H. E. Edgmon -The Woman in White - Wilkie Collins
The books I did not get around to reading from this list are as follows: Black Water Sister by Zen Cho; Blood Scion by Deborah Falaye (o); The Book of M by Peng Shepard (o); Charity and Sylvia by Rachel Hope Cleves (o); The Cruel Prince by Holly Black (a); The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey (s); Fallen by Lauren Kate (o); Fanny Hill by John Cleland (o); Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender (s); The Glass Woman by Caroline Lea (s); The Great Hunger by Cecil Woodham-Smith (o); Helping Her Get Free by Susan Brewster (o); The Impossible Girl by Lydia Kang (s); Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold (o); The Merry Spinster by Daniel Lavery (o); On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong (o); The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang (s); Radiance by Grace Draven (a); Watching the Tree by Adeline Yen Mah (o); The Willows by Algernon Blackwood (s); Wings of Fire (o); Witches Steeped in Gold by Clannon Smart (o); The Wolf and the Woodsman by Ava Reid (s)
23/46 Whoa! That's exactly 50% of the books I had on my list! That's pretty cool! All in all, I consider this 2023 goal successfully done!

do you have any book recs?
im gonna sound like a normie or a heathen but my tastes in books is extremely lame 😭 my favourite books are all huge classics. i fucking love pride and prejudice im so boring 😭 i read the fucking godfather and thought it was fine like THAT is how boring my tastes are
i LOVE catch 22 if you havent read it i HIGHLY recommend it. its really funny and i♡yossarion. about american pilots during ww2 but its a military/war/america/etc satire. really funny!!!
HER BODY AND OTHER PARTIES BY CARMEN MARIA MACHADO... omg my most favourite recently published read. BEAUTIFUL collection of short stories. feminist queer etcetc, i love the quiet body horror so to speak? it felt like it read my mind...
an invitation from a crab by panpanya amazing manga/short story collection. after reading it i had to lay back and just stare into the nothingness. again it felt like it read my mind
kurosagi corpse delivery service episodic body horror/horror comedy detective mystery manga. its about a group of college students of a buddhist university who all have various odd ESP powers who try to help corpses lay in rest/peace. great ensemble cast and the dark horse official english translation is AMAZING especially if you are a huge nerd who likes reading footnotes
gay manga: my lesbian experience with loneliness and our dreams at dusk. the latter is a beautiful exploration of queer people, a very kind and sweet work (though check for trigger warnings). the former is a really raw memoir by a lesbian author. its beautiful and its relatable and its horrible and vulnerable. love it<3
junji ito in general great horror mangaka.
ive got more manga reccs but i think i did too many already and idk if they count as books im sorry for answering your ask bad 😭 anyway some more of my lame taste in books below the cut
favourite books no order off the top of my head and my goodreads: catch-22 (love you bisexual slut legend yossarion), contact by carl sagan, i robot by isaac asimov, alias grace + the handmaid's tale by margaret atwood. i love a clockwork orange (LOVE nadsat). i like maurice (em forster), a thousand splendid suns (khaled hosseini). also fingersmith and like water for chocolate. i liked carmilla but its honestly kinda mid 😭
love the hunger games uhhhh. love asoiaf obvi. i tried the first of the witcher novels (the short story collection) but they were too sexist for me and geralt was an annoying centrist. i was like but the elves are literally being oppressed God forbid they fight back. God Forbid renfri fight back against men! i liked jaskier though :) jesus christ thats a tangent
i actually like a lot of non fiction. jeanette mccurdy's recent memoir is a great read, as if ben mcintyre's operation mincemeat. i read ben raines' clotilda, about the last slave ship to smuggle captive africans to the USA. all three are interesting reads
finally karl marx's communist manifesto :) not a joke. very quick pamphlet. one day i will read lenin's imperialism i stg. my goodreads to read list is huge...

so I'm a big book nerd and I'm not even halfway through this one, but I know it's gonna be GREAT. It's called 'The 57 Bus'. It's based on a true story about two teenagers. One with a lighter, one with a skirt....DUN DUN DUNNN and it includes pride! With trans people, and gay people (gay as in everyone in the community)
-🪳
OOOOO my best friend absolutely LOVES the 57 bus and is hounding me to read it when i have the time - maybe this means i should listen to him?
i am a big book nerd as well, i just don't often have the excess time or energy to read these days:,) unfortunately. i've only been rereading passages of my fav book "oranges are not the only fruit" by jeanette winterson when i have the time. fantastic novel about being raised evangelical as a lesbian, highly recommend

my point here is: tiff's lying about the reason she doesn't like the aetherium and i never actually mentioned it?
side tangent before i get to my point vis a vis jeanette: tiff's a fucking liar, ok? she says she doesn't like "nerd shit?"
OK. YEAH, SURE. you referenced gilear, of all people, while threatening to homewreck; you CANONICALLY watch pathfinder actual play content and DRAG OTHER PEOPLE INTO IT; you were EXCITED for GATEWALKERS. her favorite movies are about the construction of people (mostly women) and fucked up scientists. she likes an improvised space opera from the 1990s?? yeah, sure, she MAY have watched power rangers because drake likes it, but she still WATCHED IT, and she still got upset when ben said he didn't know who tolkein was. her love for ray bradbury is one of the main things mr hillam remembers about her. she used to do calculus in the bathroom five minutes before class. yeah, whatever, shut UP, fucking nerd (as if we needed an explanation that the person trying to measure planar instability wasn't that)
there's no REASON, based on the above, for her to actually dislike the aetherium. it's classic wizard lit, right? kids go to wizard school. magical theory, worldbuilding, dragons, murder, chicago. fuck, gwen krantz as a character almost seems built to appeal to tiff (aroace skateboarding second-generation caster from 1993? the jokes around her concern jizzing spiders and molasses floods following car accidents on the way to buy a bikini kill album? fuck yeah).
she says, in This Godless Endeavor, that the reason she doesn't like it is BECAUSE she got into it too late. (this is in the conversation where drake and mark force-assign her house moxie, ftr). in Beach Day, when she's talking to andy at their parents' house, she mentions that she hated it (which also came up in Kansas) and reaffirms the age bit.
THAT'S NOT THE REASON.
the reason is mostly that she sees too much of her worst traits in trish wilson's worst traits, and she can't bear to see it-- even though, by virtue of being one of my characters, she would be most like alf.

📷cake-and-monsters said: This makes a lot of sense . My inner Buffy nerd would be genuinely interested on your expanded thoughts on Joyce and Angel’s relationship with Buffy heh
I'm not sure I have much of interest to say about Joyce and Buffy. Joyce is a bad mum, but she's a bad mum in a very believable, and unfortunately common, way. I don't think she necessarily actually wanted kids; she probably didn't think about it all, in fact. Having kids was what women in her societal niche did, so she had some. Her own feelings didn't come into it. Marrying a man who you don't actually like and who doesn't like you was what people did, so she did it. Hers is a life unexamined. Nothing has ever happened to derail her from the path set out before her - even her teenage rebellion was by the numbers - and so she's never actually stopped to think about whether the path is what she wants
the problem is that buffy is not on that path any more. until she became the slayer, buffy was living, more or less, the exact same life her mum had, only the fashion and the slang any different. then overnight the tracks switched, and buffy's living a life completely divorced from what joyce is familiar with, and she has no idea how to cope
there's a jeanette winterson quote i think about a lot. it's something her mother said to her when she first came out to her. "Why be happy when you could be normal?" That's essentially Joyce's mindset in seasons 1-3.
they turned the reveal of buffy's slayer-ness into a coming out metaphor, because that was all teen genre shows knew how to do in the 90s apparently, but i am personally absolutely certain that joyce would have reacted in the exact same way, with the same level of vitriol, if it was an actual coming out. her problem isn't with slaying, her problem is that buffy is stepping off the path, and in doing so, forcing joyce to actually think about her own life in a way she's never done before
~
Angel is more interesting, and kind of a unique example, i think. its fascinating that twilight was inspired by bangel, because edward is in some ways angel taken to the logical extremes - angel is dramatically more likeable, but he has most of the same faults, in smaller, more forgivable ways
he is absolutely in love with an ideal far more than he's in love with a person, and he would absolutely fall out of love overnight if he realised she wasn't that ideal. the complication is that her being a flawed human is part of that ideal, so what it would take to make him realise he doesn't really love her is hard to say
if cordelia wasn't enough to make it happen, i'm not sure anything could.
except that i also think cordelia did, in a lot of ways. he experienced a relationship built on mutual respect, with a fully grown adult (don't get me started on the question of how the fuck old cordy is supposed to be in angel season 4, time in los angeles works differently than in the rest of the buffy universe) who viewed him as a peer. that has to have put every other relationship in his life up to that point into harsh perspective. but by that point he'd built so much of his identity around the idea of loving buffy that he couldn't admit it to himself without shaking his entire foundation
buffy is, to him, a kind of measuring stick. if he meets buffy's standards, he must be good enough, he must be redeamed enough, and the fact that she's a traumatised teenager who's super strength didn't actually come with any special moral sense never occurs to him. she's the slayer. if even the slayer thinks he's good, then maybe he really is
for my money, the curse proves that. i don't think that moment of pure happiness was love. if it was, there were a million small moments before they had sex that should have qualified. that pure happiness was the fact that, just for a moment, when the slayer allowed herself to be so vulnerable with him, showed such deep trust in him, he could believe he really had been redeemed. (also sprinkle over a healthy dose of 'sex is dirty and bad so if she's letting me defile her it's extra meaingful etc' because he's what the writers thought people in the early 18th century europe were like, so his religious beliefs are a horrifying mishmash of puritanism, victorian anglicanism, and 20th century american evanglicalism)
if buffy was a decade older and more mature, i'd even be sympathetic to him. after 100 years of guilt and the sure and certain prospect of damnation, of course he was desperate for anything that tasted like repemption
but buffy is 16 the first time they kiss, and it's fiction and no one's being hurt, but that still tells us something about angel
because if buffy actually was that decade older and wiser, i don't think he'd fall for her in anything like the same way. maybe they'd still fall in love, but she wouldn't be the one to trigger the curse. his life wouldn't revolve around loving her. buffy being so young means she's essentially got nothing to compare against. it's easy to sweep a girl off her feet if she's not an a stable footing. it's easy to seem like the smartest, strongest, kindest guy in the room when the room only contains you
buffy would probably think he was a good person if they met as adults. she'd probably like him, and applaud the work he does to protect people, but she'd also see his pettiness, and his short-sightedness, and his paternalism, and a dozen other faults. she'd see him as just a person, good and bad, and it's hard to believe in the absolute and perfect redemption of someone who leaves the toilet seat up and keeps getting into stupid fights with his brother/lover/grandchilde/whatever the writers have decided spike is to him today, and is kind of a bad friend a lot of the time. he needs her to look at him and see a hero, because he needs, desperately, to believe he's capable of being a hero.
the only way he'd ever actually admit that he's fallen out of love, or at least that the feelings have naturally faded with time and distance, is if he actually found something he could accept as sufficient repemption for his sins, or if he realised buffy wasn't actually any kind of moral arbiter, and neither are likely to happen
connor might have been enough, if angel had actually had the chance to raise him, but we'll never know
the post S3 status quo is probably the best we'll get, healthy relationship wise. buffy still loves him but does eventually move on (I don't want to feel sorry for riley, because hoo boy does he have issues with women, but it's got to be hard to know the competition is one of histories most prolific serial killers and she still prefers him to you) even if it does take 4 seasons. maybe in a couple of hundred years, Angel will do the same

so if i’m the authority on bertram tung, and you’re the authority on craigothy boone, let’s do a headcanon swap. mine is bertie is deep into astrology. like way beyond the typical astrology nerd, he studied the planets and stars for centuries. like he blames the fledgling finding out his scheme on him being an aries mars. when told about jeanette and therese he’s like “i should have known. a gemini and a malkavian, of course.” he offers this advice to the fledgling “look, lacroix might be a leo sun but he’s a pisces moon, and you can use that against him”, “if you wanna get on Gary’s good side, appeal to his ego. it’s his Sagittarius saturn and Leo mars combination that’ll make him putty in your hands if you know what to say”. as for himself? “I might be a cancer but— ok laugh all you want cupcake. not like i haven’t been getting that same joke for decades. you done yet? anyways, don’t think i’m soft just cause i’m a cancer sun, i’m also a gemini moon and scorpio venus, combine that with a retrograde aries mars and i’m a force to be reckoned with”. the fledgling understood precisely none of that
holy fuck i love it. do you think he does online chart readings for cash on the side. (also cancer sun cap moon libra rising here would he like me 💃)
i like to hc that boone was always pretty quiet and gruff (it gets worse after losing carla) sheerly due to coming from a massive family of mostly brothers. he was one of the younger ones but not the youngest so got used to never really being able to get a word in edgewise and trying to keep his head down so he doesn’t get roughed up too much by his brothers. as a bonus it’s contributed to his calm under pressure because he’s seen some absolute nonsense and is used to going about ordinary life while some Jackass-tier shit is going on in the background. keeping steady aim while explosions are happening or a deathclaw is running at him comes natural after that.
