Siberian chipmunk (Eutamias sibiricus).

While, as with most wild animals, chipmunks shouldn’t be kept as pets unless it’s a rescue situations where they can’t be rehabilitated and released for one reason or another, going by what I know about rodent body language, this little guy is in no distress at all and seems to be having lots of fun playing pretend whack-a-mole with the person in the video.

In 1946, a fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Taylor wrote and illustrated NIBBLES AND ME, a book about her pet chipmunk. (He came her way during production of COURAGE OF LASSIE.) The book must have meant something to her, as she renewed the copyright in 1974 and re-published the book in 2002, with additional drawings and an introduction. These images are from the original 1946 publication.

Regarding her childhood, Taylor would later remark that “the child in me was suppressed. It worked, it was paid, it was on the screen, but it was not me”.

I put up another little fountain this year. My red paint came off and no hummers visited (so far) but it got plenty of attention, especially from the Orioles. They have the pond but all love to drink here.

I went to this ghost town in the Rocky Mountains where you could buy a bag of sunflower seeds for $0.50 and sit on a bench and wait for chipmunks to approach you. I’m not gonna lie, I screamed when he actually jumped on me.
