Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Not all squirrels live in trees! Like a gopher, the rock squirrel actually lives in a system of complex burrows which can reach up to 5.8 m (19 ft) long! However, that doesn't mean that rock squirrels can't climb; in fact, they often forage for leaves, seeds, and acorns as well as insects and bird eggs in nearby trees and bushes. They are also quite adept at climbing steep, rocky cliffs, hence the name 'rock squirrel'.

I had friends visiting from South Africa for a month and every single time they saw a squirrel it was just — unbridled joy— pandemonium— pointing and announcing “SQUIRREL” with the deranged enthusiasm of a young child encountering their favourite animal at the zoo.
Shouting at every single one they saw. Which was multiple times a day. Every day. For a month. Walking through any sort of park took a lifetime because every single squirrel had to be pointed at and pictures taken. I swear to god they filled their cameras with more squirrel photos than photos of their actual trip.
It was hysterical and endearing and now every time I see a basic ass squirrel scuttle up a tree I also have to yell.
Sometimes I see some variety of North American Little Guy (opossum, raccoon, etc. ) and I’m like “okay”
BUT THEN I start thinking about how excited somebody from not-North-America would be to see this Guy. Like, would an Australian be excited to see the only marsupial not from their country? Are there raccoons in zoos on the other side of the world that are regarded as unique and exotic creatures? Idk but it’s made me more excited to see Guys in my area.

One of the recurring philosophical questions is:
"Does a falling tree in the forest make a sound when there is no one to hear?"
Which says something about the nature of philosophers, because there is always someone in a forest. It may only be a badger, wondering what that cracking noise was, or a squirrel a bit puzzled by all the scenery going upwards, but someone. At the very least, if it was deep enough in the forest, millions of small gods would have heard it.
Things just happen, one after another. They don't care who knows. But history...ah, history is different. History has to be observed. Otherwise it's not history. It's just...well, things happening one after another.

I put up another little fountain this year. My red paint came off and no hummers visited (so far) but it got plenty of attention, especially from the Orioles. They have the pond but all love to drink here.
