Have you played LOW STAKES ?
By Craig Campbell and NerdBurger Games
Heavily inspired by What We Do In The Shadows, Low Stakes is a rules lite TTRPG where players take on the roles of monster roommates living in a house together going about daily life. As monsters, you all have your own powers that could come in handy but also your own personal issues that could get you into trouble. Sessions play out like episodes in a TV show complete with a documentary crew , characters gain confidence in their decisions and clout to sway their fellow roommates. Complete with “offscreen confessionals” where players talk to the film crew recording their house party or roadtrip.

Hi! I co-wrote Secrets of the Vibrant Isle and Secrets of the Vibrant Sea. They're exploration games about a magical island and the sea that surrounds it. You travel to the island and have a limited number of things you can do in a day before your time runs out. As you explore, you meet the Inhabitants of the island, discover magical objects, help strange creatures, and try and earn the right to stay. If you succeed, you're now an inhabitant of the island.
Secrets of the Vibrant Sea can be played independently or as a sequel to your first character's adventure on the island.
It's a fun game designed to be focused on learning about the amazing place you're in and solving problems.
You can play it simply, just jotting down your notes, or you can journal, make maps, or use it as a writing prompt. If you're an educator or child care worker, you can have a class write together or separately based on the prompts in the book. I'm a former child care worker and put some thought into how this could be used in a classroom.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. You can get the games here:
So you're looking for a system other than D&D...
Have you tried solo RPGs? Because it's not just "how can I play D&D alone" there's a whole world of cool stuff out there….And I want to tell you about it.
(I'm quite sick today so please forgive any incoherence or typos.)
First off, it's totally fine if you're more of a party person over a solo person. I just know a lot of people aren't aware of solo games, how they work, or the breadth of diversity you find among them.
If you ask about solo games, the first one mentioned is almost always Ironsworn. It's freeeee and comes with a lot of resources. The PDF is over 200 pages, so I understand if you don't want to dive in with Ironsworn quite yet.
Ironsworn has a large community, including support for Foundry and Roll20, along with many derivative works. It offers a gritty default fantasy setting, but encourages you to ignore that if you prefer another world… maybe one from another RPG you enjoy the lore from…?
BUT maybe you want something that isn't as much of a commitment (and maybe a little sad)?
Many Wretched and Alone games use a tumbling block tower to simulate a random ticking clock. It might represent your mental health, the barricade, the ship sinking…
One of the creators of the system has a great thread highlighting their favorite games. Just search Wretched an Alone on Itch.io to find even more.
And if you don't want to go buy a Jenga tower, there are some great random simulators out there. I've been able to play W&A games on road trips, using a deck simulator, a dice simulator, and a tumbling tower simulator. Here's tower replacement I like. It replicates the odds of a tumbling tower falling without being too complicated.
Carta is another cool system where you use a standard deck cards to create a map that you explore. As you explore, you usually have to manage recourses to avoid something bad, but not always.
Here's a collection of several games made using Carta.
Dead Belt takes this concept and RUNS with it. You have a few things to track as you explore abandoned randomized ship decks, searching for a good payload. Upgrade your gear and do it again.
Does the thought of managing your character sound exciting? Do you enjoy soulslike games, like Elden Ring and Bloodborne?
Rune is a fresh release with a lot of third-party support already. It's pretty easy to pick up and play too.
Apothecaria and Apawthecaria have you making potions for the local village. Go out exploring, collect ingredients, and see if you can solve the greater mysteries of the land.
Interested in horror, but want a more narrative-driven experience? In Dwelling, you'll spend the sleepless and alone in a haunted house. This is a very neat game.
Songs of the City is a delightful tarot game that you play once a day for a week. It's another narrative-driven game where you draw cards and cast magic to see small neat changes in the city you reside in.
Anamnesis, Anamnesis, Anamnesis. I talk about this game a lot because it's magical in its simplicity. There's nothing to track and it's an incredible way to generate character ideas or tell a story.
And now there are more Anamnesis games coming out (including mine) You don't need the original games to play any of the games you see here.
There are so many more games I want to talk about, but alas, this cold is making me stop there.
If you've written a solo game, streamed one, reviewed one, or have one you really like, I invite you to share it!

Running Games at Gencon!
Hey, I'm running some games at Gencon this year for Nerdburger Games! Here they are, if you're going to be there, come check out a game or two!
Capers: Tick Tock: Thursday, August 1/24, 10 am. Waking up from a rowdy party, you discover the boss' heirloom pocket watch has been stolen. Clean yourself up, ramp up your superpowers, and find that watch, or else! In CAPERS, you’re a super-powered gangster in the 1920s.
Staged Heroism: Cosmic Retirement Home for the Superpowered. Friday August 2, 10 am/Saturday August 3, 10 am
The number one rule at the Cosmic Retirement Home for the Superpowered is: "You're retired now. No more adventures!" However, something awfully suspicious is going on with a new experimental medical treatment. Use your lifetime of experience to expose the truth without compromising your future in this luxurious retirement home. Staged Heroism is a comedic game of supers, legacies, and kind of screwing up a lot.
I'll also be helping out at the Nerdburger booth, which will be here:

I've played GURPS with nothing but the base stats, because you can. Al the complex rules are optional.
Also there's like, THE ENTIRETY OF THE NERDBURGER GAMES LIBRARY : rules light games based on RP. Mostly CAPERS. If you want a not-D&D game, play CAPERS.
It just takes a tiny amount of effort.
TBQH most of popular "alternatives" to D&D are either Pathfinder or both very different and rules heavy. Like maybe if you directly ask someone who knows things you would get proper recommendations (I sure as hell know systems that allow me to do fantasy better, both very different and D&D-but-simpler), but not simply from osmosis. From osmosis you would know GURPS, World of Darkness, Dark Heresy, Savage Worlds, and a bunch of PbtA games, and half of that is more complicated than D&D and most also more setting-specific.
(Yeah there is probably a PbtA game for everything but like you still have to find specific games)
i cannot imagine any possible metric by which 'd&d' or 'pathfinder' are games that aren't insanely, overwhelmingly, rules-heavy and setting-specific
#d&d#ttrpg#look i started tagging it D&D and now there's so much under that tag I'm stuck with it#but check that tag on my blog if you want more ideas#also penflower ink's games are genius

Alan Moore: [appearing in a cloud of smoke] Alan Moore: foolish hedge wizard!! Your powers are nothing compared to the arch magus! Moore: true magic is when you roll a natural 12 on your dexterity saving throw! Manly Wade Wellman: No way! Real magic is when you wrap a potato with red yarn and bury it under a widow’s doorstep Eve Harms: you’re all full of it Harms: real magic is all about memorizing a really complicated math diagram
Ray Bradbury: you all claim you’re versed in the ways of magic Bradbury: but can any of you explain away the mystery of what makes a young man’s heart flutter pitter pat when he first calls on his lady friend, her freshly laundered shift dress rippling in the warm autumn breeze, to escort her to the barn dance down at Miller’s General Store? Moore: Crowley: Wellman: Harms:
Bradbury: also real magic is about electricity Bradbury: can any of you put a light bulb in your mouth and make it light up? Crowley: what, like uncle fester? Bradbury: yeah like uncle fester Crowley: Crowley: oh hell, I can’t compete with that Eve Harms: no but check out this diagram of eight intersecting triangles Harms: it’s called "the thinkological fulcrum" Crowley: whats it do Harms: if you cross your eyes just right, it shows you a biblically accurate angel Crowley: hmm Crowley: I could probably fuck that Crowley: here, show me how it works

Book 4 - I’m changing up the pace now. After 1984, I think I need something less dystopian. Marginal gains to high performance seems reasonably grounded enough. Has anyone read this book? . I’ll post my review of 1984 soon. . 📚 . #bookworm #matthewsyed #blackboxthinking #read #books #book4 #yearofreading #nerdburger #marginalgains #highperformance (at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtwaU6BgU_i/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=y0julyg1buzl
