Running Games at Gencon!
Hey, I'm running some games at Gencon this year for Nerdburger Games! Here they are, if you're going to be there, come check out a game or two!
Capers: Tick Tock: Thursday, August 1/24, 10 am. Waking up from a rowdy party, you discover the boss' heirloom pocket watch has been stolen. Clean yourself up, ramp up your superpowers, and find that watch, or else! In CAPERS, you’re a super-powered gangster in the 1920s.
Staged Heroism: Cosmic Retirement Home for the Superpowered. Friday August 2, 10 am/Saturday August 3, 10 am
The number one rule at the Cosmic Retirement Home for the Superpowered is: "You're retired now. No more adventures!" However, something awfully suspicious is going on with a new experimental medical treatment. Use your lifetime of experience to expose the truth without compromising your future in this luxurious retirement home. Staged Heroism is a comedic game of supers, legacies, and kind of screwing up a lot.
I'll also be helping out at the Nerdburger booth, which will be here:

Have you played LOW STAKES ?
By Craig Campbell and NerdBurger Games
Tumblr media
Heavily inspired by What We Do In The Shadows, Low Stakes is a rules lite TTRPG where players take on the roles of monster roommates living in a house together going about daily life. As monsters, you all have your own powers that could come in handy but also your own personal issues that could get you into trouble. Sessions play out like episodes in a TV show complete with a documentary crew , characters gain confidence in their decisions and clout to sway their fellow roommates. Complete with “offscreen confessionals” where players talk to the film crew recording their house party or roadtrip.

It’s the 1920s Prohibition Era in the United States. Alcohol is illegal. Organized crime grows at an unprecedented rate as gangsters get rich selling hooch to a thirsty populace. You are one of those gangsters…and you have superpowers!
Tumblr media
In the CAPERS tabletop roleplaying game, you portray a character with extraordinary abilities in the Roaring Twenties. As a gangster, you seek to exploit the law and get rich off of alcohol, gambling, prostitution, and racketeering. You join up with other players to collectively seek your fortunes in the vice-riddled, booze-soaked casinos and speakeasies of the Jazz Age.
Alternatively, you and the other players can portray members of law enforcement seeking to bring these criminals to justice.
The setting features some prominent, historical Prohibition Era characters but also a variety of gender-swaps and race-flips to make the game about more than mostly Italian and Irish guys. A slew of unique, fictional NPCs of all types have been created to give every player something to latch onto when perusing the game world.
CAPERS is a game of action, adventure, virtue, and vice in a world coming into its own. It’s a world of theft, fraud, subterfuge, and espionage. Your character will risk their life to find their place in this world, regardless of which side of the law they fall on.
Tumblr media
When playing CAPERS, each player (and the GM) uses their own deck of standard, poker-style playing cards (52 suit cards plus 2 jokers) to determine if a character succeeds at difficult tasks.
The pip value of the card you flip (2, 3, and so on, up to ace high) determines success versus failure. The card’s suit determines the DEGREE of success or failure, starting at clubs (the worst) and going alphabetically upward to spades (the best). You’ll be able to flip multiple cards based on your character’s capability. You might flip the king of clubs, certainly a success with a king, but just barely a success with clubs.
Do you settle for barely successful or flip another card, hoping for a better result? Each flip is a gamble, risking failure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every backer at the Bootlegger level and higher gets the following. (Refer to individual backer levels for other rewards specific to that level.)
A PDF of the CAPERS game, approximately 150-160 pages in color, including all unlocked stretch goals. Projected book length is dependent upon hitting all stretch goals.
A variety of PDF support materials. See “Support Materials” for more information.
A link to purchase a soft or hardcover book at cost from DriveThruRPG.com later. See “Ordering Physical Books” for more information.
A link to purchase a deck of CAPERS-themed playing cards from DriveThruCards.com later. See “Ordering Cards” for more information.
A PDF of the CAPERS Preview Edition, made available to all backers shortly after the Kickstarter funds. (EDIT: The preview edition is available to backers NOW. Check out Update 7.) This preview edition is bare bones, with just enough information to run the game and is in black and white. It may read a bit differently from the final book. It contains some setting info, the rules, a handful of powers, some pre-generated characters, and an introductory adventure.
A thank-you in the book's credits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These PDFs are free to all backers at the Bootlegger level and higher. They aren't necessary to play the game, but they can help.
Form-Fillable PDF Character Sheet: Print it and fill it out or type into it on your computer or tablet.
Rules One-Sheet: A handy one-page summary of the rules that you can reference on your tablet or print and make available to everyone at the table.
GM Screen Sheets: Print them off for reference or slip them into the sleeves of generic GM screens. Portrait and landscape orientations available.
Pre-Generated Characters: A series of starting characters ready to play. Half are gangsters. Half are members of law enforcement.
Rivals Adventure: An introductory adventure for gangster characters.
One Busy Night Adventure: An adventure for more advanced gangster characters.
Gloves Off Adventure: Yet another adventure for even more advanced gangster characters.
Are there more? Wait and see...

Lackadaisy fan? Want to play a TTRPG in the Lackadaisy world? Use Capers!
CAPERS is an award-winning super-powered game of gangsters in the Roaring Twenties.
In CAPERS, players portray exceptional people – called "capers" by the general populace – who have been gifted with superhuman powers that defy the laws of science. You can play a gangster working to make his fortune in the vice-riddled 1920s. Alternatively, you can portray a member of law enforcement working to bring these criminals to justice.
The game has rules for normal people and Exceptionals, people without superpowers but just a little better than usual. These rules would be perfect for the Lackadaisy world. There's already everything you need for the weapons and vehicles. All you need is the basic book for a game, and if you play online, the Roll20 kit is a fantastic deal and gets you everything you need for a great price and only one person needs the game to play.

https://t.co/TUWOqXyezM?amp=1 The Princess Project  - a series of adventures, I wrote a fun scavenger hunt adventure for low-level characters (bonus stuff here)
https://t.co/VzfGD29bV7?amp=1 Vast Kaviya - an entire planet with different types of biomes, adventures, monsters, politics, and even a new class and subclasses! (I wrote the Endless Plains)
https://t.co/5tcWBzzqlY?amp=1 Nerdburger Games - I wrote for all the expansions for Capers (but not the core book), it’s such a fantastic game. There’s also several more great games on the site. Go check it out! (Die Laughing is an excellent party game)

Gen Con Review
So I meant to write this when I got back but between being totally overwhelmed and being incredibly sick I haven’t had a chance. So... traveling to the States wasn’t as nerve-wracking as I thought until I was on my way home but I will get to that. I brought the wrong kind of bag, that was a huge mistake and the bruises on my arms reassured me if I go again I will need a better one.
I ran games in the Indie Games Developer Network room, four games over three days, all by Nerdburger.
My first impression was how huge and crowded it was and that never went away. I can’t even describe to you how big the con is. You literally can’t see everything, there’s too much. I’m glad I didn’t try to plan anything, it would have been thrown off by how huge the place was. My first game was Murders & Acquisitions. If you’re not familiar with the game, the premise is that you “shakers”, not quite peons and not quite upper management, are trying to get ahead in your business. The adventure hook was that the project they had to present at the end of the day had been stolen by a rival team and they had several options to deal with it. There were five people on the other team. They locked two in a bathroom and then set off a gas leak, killing them both. Another they defenestrated, recruited the fourth, and used her to frame the fifth guy for everything, forcing him to retire. In the end, they were able to present their project. As the adventure didn’t require a specific setting to work I let the players make up a company and project. The company was Entertaining Acquisitions (which shortened to EA totally coincidentally swears the player), and their project was a VR casino game for kids. Players: It’s educational! It teaches them about math! Me: Yeah, subtraction.
The pregen characters I had were all based on office characters from media (Lana and Cyril from Archer, etc), one player chose Dwayne from office space and attacked people with a stapler, it was vicious.
Next game was Capers, which is 1920s prohibition with superpowers. I won’t go into detail on the adventure because I’m writing it up, but the players were amazing and got so in to character. I only ended up with 3/5 but I didn’t care, they were so great. I made pregen characters with various powers. Capers powers aren’t given in great detail, giving you the chance to flavour them as you like, and the players had a great time bringing the characters to life far more deeply than I expected. They encouraged me to write up the adventure, so thanks to them I will be doing that.
My second Capers game came had some of the same pregen characters, but they were played very differently. Only two people showed up, so I told the organizers at the front to direct any curious folk my way, and ended up with two amazing players. They pulled off a brilliant heist of a magical Fabergé Egg (and a few non-magical ones), and thanks to the Puppeteer’s ability to speak to objects, made the egg the leader of their gang. The egg was very conceited, but wouldn’t you be if you were that gorgeous?
My Die Laughing game came with a lot of mistakes on the rules on my part, I feel really bad for that, and I plan to do a lot better. I was exhausted and my brain was just mush. Still, the players should have had a better explanation. Anyway it was brilliant what they came up with. Die Laughing is a game where you all play characters in a horror comedy movie. Your character eventually dies and you become a producer able to influence the movie. Tables help you find the theme and scenes and enemies. We ended up with “cute creepy possessed girl” in a grade school as our movie. One of the players picked “paranormal investigator” as his character, so we decided it was a ghost reality show: Spooky Jim’s Paranormal House (”IT’S DOCTOR JAMES, THANK YOU”). All the players were genius and all had their own individual and collective genius ideas. The best part of the game is the weird stories that build up on top of each other, so by the end the fact that the ghosts formed a basketball team and in the post-credits scene were taking on the Toronto Raptors made narrative sense. It went from paranormal reality to a heartwarming sports flick.
