A Mouse Among Owls? - Chapter 02
Fandom: Murder Drones
Warnings: Implied/referenced Child Neglect
Character appearances: Uzi Doorman, Serial Designation V, Serial Designation J.
The flight back to the metallic carcass spire felt rather uneventful. Her arms were already occupied, securing a snoozing pill drone, and her tail was busy coiled around a dead worker. Harsh winds blew against their bodies, but no matter how strong, they never halted the disassembly droneâs skilled wings. Mechanical mercenaries such as her were designed to endure this planetâs post-apocalyptic, never-changing climate.
âYouâre so tiny⊠are you a runt?â V thought, as one of her true eyes stared at the robot infant. To be fair, the disassembler gal never had met a worker UNN before and had no way to check if all unfledged drones of its kind were normally that small.Â
It looked peaceful, glued against her chassis to feel warmth. For a second, the older drone wondered if it was dreaming or rewinding memory files before she softly chortled. âCute.â
J always said that toasters werenât like them, just insentient machines mimicking human speech. V didnât have much knowledge about prey other than how to hunt them, she didnât have a lot of reason to question what her leader told her. Yet, occasionally her mind tried to convince herself that⊠Oh, I donât remember.
Serial Designation V wondered why it had been brought outside in the first place, usually the little ones were kept in the safety of bunkers and strongholds. And in security breaches, the young were almost always the first ones to be evacuated or hidden. For dumb metal tins, they were oddly smart about preservation. No doubt that it was thanks to âJCJenson IN SPAAAAACEE!!!!â skilful coding.Â
The murder bot delayed their arrival a bit, but enough to not become toast. It was as if she was dragging her feet (her wings?) at the thought of possible confrontation. Unit V hoped her leader would be asleep when she got there, for the pill baby and her audialsâ sake. Night had been hectic for both of them, a good day of rest was needed.
She landed quietly outside her squadâs outpost, the menacing structure swayed thanks to the frigid windâs will. Watching its gentle movements was almost hypnotic, one could forever dwell wondering if the thing would ever collapse to the ground. Somewhat unlikely, as long disassemblers are inhabiting it, they will keep disrepair at bay.
Cautiously, V stepped through the entrance, her mechanical âearsâ terribly keen to the sound of snow crunching under her peg feet. She tried to keep her vents under control, aiming for minimum noise. Her tail freed her prey, its spark of life long gone, and stiffly curled towards the ground.Â
Decoration was sparse, excluding the dismembered drone parts scattered around the towerâs inward. A few miscellaneous items, once belonging to the now lifeless, glistened with stray moonlight that managed to peek through the chinks on the metallic husk amalgamationâs walls. Definitely tripping hazards!Â
She wonders if anyone complained about it already.
For a brief moment, her gaze fixated upwards on a specific corner of the spire. In the farthest area, there was an entrance to a quite hidden den. She didnât⊠enjoy paying visits there frequently, preferring to only show up when it was truly necessary. âDonât think about it,â the disassembler gal shook her head and continued with her quest, V didnât want to linger too long at the yellow glow coming from it.
âHow did the hunt go?â Slow and tired, a voice from above suddenly asked, her tail bristled up as straight as a steel bar and it felt like her core almost jumped out of her chest. Carefully, SD-V turned her head to look at the speaker, even though such action was pointless due to her true eyes having a wide visual field, mindful to conceal her new charge with her own body. J was hung upside down, deadly tail fastened like a snake around an improvised perch, metallic wings hugging herself to shield from possible threats and cold breeze. Her headband lights were dimmed, not bothered to lay bleary eyes on her teammate. Most likely filing squad reports on her internal software. âHow many did you take down this time?â
âIt was peachy,â carefully picked words left her sharp-toothed mouth, âI donât remember how many but it was more than I could carry back here.âÂ
The leader hummed softly, clearly pleased by Vâs hard work. If she wasnât so sleepy, J would have endlessly ranted about hunting quotas and squad ranks.Â
âYouâre dismissed for now,â her coworker mumbled, âAnd itâs your turn tomorrow.â
Slowly V wandered to her personal nest and placed the egg-shaped infant on a pile of soft old clothing, ones she had collected during scouts to serve as bedding. The whole time wracking her CPU for solutions of how she would keep the tiny drone alive, out of other creatures' sight and earshot. Its digital eyes snapped the moment her clawed hands stopped contact, darted around the room analysing the new environment and then started to wobble with threats of tears.Â
Whimpers started to bubble in its synthetic vocal cords, begging to be held close again. The disassemblerâs eyes hollowed and quickly grabbed it. HOW DO I SOOTHE A BABY? Her mind was panicking. Serial Designation Vâs usual âprotocolâ was to⊠leave them crying on their own until it stopped.
Well, he didnât cry as much as before! And J didnât want crybabies in the team.
âGoddammit brain, focus on right now and not that,â She whispered.
The murderous drone started to rock the pill thing at a plodding pace, V didnât know how smart it was but made shushing sounds hoping that it quickly got the memo. Thankfully, the whining died down. She sighed, shoulders slacked and her back lay against the denâs ground with a thud.Â
Disassembly drones were social creatures who usually enjoyed communal sleep, needless to say, J expected to see V hanging beside her blade cocoon-like figure next dusk. Although every squad member had their own nests they were mostly used for storage, dronelings, and the sick.
But she couldnât leave it alone, nor place it down without risking it being discovered thanks to the sure wailing the tiny drone would emit. The whole situation screamed, âStay with me, you have no choice!â One of her hands, the disassembler didnât dare to remove both at the same time again, ran down her visor and face plates with a quiet groan.
âThis isnât permanent,â V convinced mentally told herself, âits stay is temporary.â Her digital eyes wandered to the oval being in her hold, its visor dots blinking with mismatched tired pacing. âHeh, still cute.â Maybe the corporate ideologue would let resting one day alone slide, right? V set an internal alarm to wake up earlier than usual, hoping to trick the leader that she was near her the whole time.Â
If this became a pattern, doing her job would be borderline impossible. Well, she had a possible solution to where to leave it when her next hunting shift came. It was her turn anyway; J wouldnât check his nest.

Harry Potter really didnât plan on living past his fated confrontation with Lord Voldemort. When the latent basilisk venom and phoenix tears in his blood started making dramatic changes to his body, he wasnât that concerned. Itâs not like he was going to live long enough for it to be a problem anyway.
Even if he had planned to live past the final battle, then he could never have guessed the struggle awaiting him on the other side, or that heâd become a magnet for those with nowhere else to go like the snarky house elf, the grumpy phoenix, the injured vampire, or the stray werewolf that showed up on their doorstepâŠoh, and the egg. I've been meaning to get to this all month, so let's do these first 10!
Henshin! A Sentai RPG - I haven't played this one yet, but its on my shortlist of games to run.
Paranoia (Red Mongoose Edition) - I GM'd for this Sunday and we did mission de-brief, which is one of my favorite parts of the game.
Fellowship - I've run one campaign of this and played in two more in the past couple years.
Mouse Guard- Maybe it is cheating to choose a game based off an already gorgeous graphic novel series, but I don't think it is.
Paranoia - The writing in this is just so fun, it's a joy to read and i find myself laughing every time I go back to check anything.
The Quiet Year - I love the quiet year, and try to bring it and run it at a convention. I also played it at my local public library, where three of the people were brand new to TTRPGs, so i saw first-hand how easy it is to learn.
Murders and Acquisitions OR Paranoia - I'm not really sure what this question is supposed to mean so I'm going to take it overly literally. The former has a Resume Form you fill out for character creation, and the latter has a lot of forms you can fill out, such as the Pre-emptive Alibi Declaration Form.
Paranoia RAM deck - I really like all of the cards for Paranoia, but The R A M deck i bought last year is probably my favorite. It has suggestions for things to happen when The Computer Die is rolled, but they all Very Paranoia. Stuff like requiring every character to end whatever they say with "I am not a traitor". My favorite is one that gave every player one minute to draw "A Traitor" and whoever i decide did the best job gets a bonus card.
I'd really like to see some resources to better use physical cards online. Roll20 has a function to upload and create your own deck, but i've found it to be a bit glitchy. There are a few games I play that have some custom cards, and its a little annoying whenever i want to use them.
Capers, Paranoia, Mouse Guard - Capers is a game about 1920s gangsters with super powers, and so would be a blast to watch if done well. A Paranoia show would be great, but I think it might be hard to get the tone right. I'm still salty about the Mouse Guard movie getting canceled.

hmmm I saw "send specific art requests" so I think it would be Cool to see the gang in lmanburg and what you sort of visualize lmanburg as as like,,,,a house. also good luck with graduation đ
honestly most bp houses originate in my mind as mobile homes. lmanburg is a bit more foundational but it still has that sort of Long Rectangle shape . living room leads into kitchen (with a little table) and then the back of the house is this long hallway, two bedrooms branching off, and a bathroom at the very end . mentally it is similar to my family's old expandable camper in terms of aesthetic ... wooden paneling, cream paint, old stripey upholstery... idk. if yall know the roomhole (heavensinterior) blog a lot of it is similar to that . also heavily inspired by the houses of various extended family members
fundy sleeps in the twin, wilbur and tommy share the queen, tubbo takes the couch . manberg era fundy and & tubbo's sleeping arrangements stay the same but schlatt and q are in the queen now
this also made me think How would i interpret the lmanburg coat in a modern context... given bps general setting id say theres a lot of Scraping to get by and that includes shitty second-hand clothes... some sort of horrible slogan i think or a logo or something im not sure. probably retcon at some point but i was sitting there thinking how can i get the "white w golden stripes" across without it looking strange?? could also be that after they start getting into little spats with dream they literally make a stupid uniform (tie-dye or acrylic paint or something) but for now it can be a little silly hoodie for chommy maybe stolen from someone else .
bonus misc outfit drawings and tiny pipsqueaks doodle of wil&tommy in a river thumbs up
#thank you for the graduation wish you are my biggest fan....#dsmp#things i make#block party#i do also like the idea of them making 'uniforms' specifically tommy/tubbo/fundy . niki too. idk just having a silly little craft time#again a little remnant of when it wasnt as serious as like actual real murder just when it was stupid schoolyard brawls#pipsqueak doodle was me trying to redraw one of my recent ephemera acquisitions from memory#dream smp au#asks#floorplan also could probably use some work... put one bedroom on either side? idk#friends house has an insanely long hallway with doors only on one side so i think its justified...#theoretically there is a back door and porch that the kitchen overlooks#kitchen sink window i mean#i think ill sit down to do a full drawing/doodle of bp lmanburg crew from that era

The death of Jaehearys exhausted you.
Nothing prepared you for the shock and emotional consequences. It felt as though a giant sea storm had swept away your emotions and feelings of sense. Because in a way, you felt numb and unable to comprehend what you were feeling. It was either too strong or your denial in it that made you feel out of it. In the confidence of your home, the grand kingdom of your father and his grandsire before, suddenly you feel apprehensive about where you resided and the castle itself. Who to trust and not as a moment noticed in your head as your mind spirals down a rabbit hole.Â
Your nephew, a kin of your own, was dead.Â
He was murdered in cold blood. In the sanctum of your home, in the privacy of the royal rooms. It was your fault you were not by Helaenaâs side. Oh, your poor sister, the turmoil she mustâve endured in the small moments last with her son. A small piece of purity and semblance he brought into your little life and a beacon of what you strived for every day. Yet now, it has all turned to blood and dust. Used and tossed away like the sacs of bodies they would throw off dead soldiers in the aftermath of a tiring battle.Â
There you sat with a half cup of wine, undrank. You dared not step out of the chambers of your comfort. Not for long, your presence would be reminded of the council. You insist on every meeting that your presence would bestow better acquisition. In most eyes, the men divert their gaze from you.
In contrast, your wretched mother opens her mouth agape with hardly any words being supported. Your grandsire contrasts, always with an excuse that you should be needed elsewhere other than the higher discussion. How benign of you, dear granddaughter. But you are unfit for a position at court.
Otto Hightower would never speak those words directly. But you know in your heart and his intuition, the words are nearly there. You donât need an interpreter to translate what is said by the councilmen. Even if they are unaware, you understand all that is said. A tragic incident, Your Grace. The Kingsguard are doing their best to inspect all the members in the castle as we speak.
âI will have it! They will pay for this!â
The dried tears that swept down your cheeks felt sticky and annoyingly guilt-ridden of the events that had happened. You would not allow them to witness them. They were not worthy of your sadness. In grace, you hiked your dress over your feet to climb up to the doors. From where you were, you could discern the murmurs of Aegon and his hysterical yelling, absolutely mad with anger and rage. Respectfully so, the loss of his child was an unexpected and stressful one.Â
When the chambers open, the rest of the councilmen stop for a moment. Before you begrudgingly make your way to the center. âGentlemen,â You are at fault in giving away your tearful expression, the candlelight's of the chandeliers do your angelic features justice. And no noble would dare to speak upon its beauty and sorrow. All while, your lady in waiting, trails timidly behind you, head pointed down in respect. âYour Grace,â You address, and finally for a blind second, a glint of relief flashes on Aegonâs face. Finally, he must think, someone he trusts abides in the room.
âPrincess,â The Hand levels his chin, leaving a steady foot of your unforeseen appearance. Beside him, your mother lays agape in both deary and fortification.Â
The Queen stumbles on the syllables of your name, quietly. As if she was citing a wrongful plea of desperation. âIs- Is Helaena?â Of course, the last she saw you was in her bed chambers, coming in to console your sweet sister and her child. Alicent was running amuck, pulling on the fabric of her dress to prevent you from witnessing her privacies before. Luckily you didn't have to witness that.Â
âShe is with Ser Arryk and Jaeheara.â You breathed out, soft and mellow. You can tell by the exhale of your mother and grandsire's shoulders that deflating meant that their worries were at least accomplished. And a slight corner of your eye, your brother too relaxes in caution, aware of his wife and daughterâs whereabouts.Â
âGood good,â Alicent frantically nods as if trying to reassure herself that her child and granddaughter were safe. Ser Arryk was a noble knight, one who betrayed his twin to stay beside the kingâs side. That alone was enough to prove his loyalty and servitude. âThank you, my daughter.â You swallow with a gaping hole in your throat. The whole room felt the compacting of the many eyes directed at you and the Queen Mother.Â
âAnd what might be the reason for your intrusion on this council meeting, princess?â Ottoâs voice somewhat triggers a fight or flight response in you. Youâve dealt with similar situations before, wanting to be included in the war business. However this was different, the council was discussing matters of potential betrayal and the killing of your kin. You suddenly felt targeted for the offense of interrupting something crucial and overriding.Â
However, you know you should have a say in this matter. âShouldnât I be present when the death of my nephew has been informed to me merely hours ago?â There was a snap in your voice that many of them knew. Though some such as your mother and brother were accustomed to that sound more often.Â
âPerhaps it is best if the princess were with the Queen to rest away comfort and grief,â Maester Orwyle suggests only to infuse your temper.Â
In a quick turn, your lilac orbs strike an alarming resemblance to vexation and hostility. âWhy?â Your tone was sharp and accusing just as it was. The Queen Regent could only watch and stare mutely at your grueling pettiness. Lord Tyland and Ser Criston Cole dare not to look at you but at the maester. While Aegon, all the more slightly frustrated at Maester Orwyleâs comments, stops and waits for your dreadful retaliation like a venomous viper. Otto couldnât look more disappointed in you.Â
âThe death of your nephew is a tearful one, princess. And maybe you should stay within the quarters with the Queen for safety.â The maester does not falter in his reasoning, knowing how quick and ill-tempered you are similar to your brother was to retaliation. But his expression flickers in doubt shortly after you are seen to lay your palms on the edge of the end of the table. Itâs hard wooden material, clenched tightly around your hands as you glance up at the councilman with fury in your eyes.Â
âI am more capable than you think of me, Maester Orwyle. And I would be damned to sit in silence and pity for this horrendous murder!â You snarl, a frown forming at the edges of your lips. You were livid beyond this. Only when you want to be present in the decisions regarding your kin, did the council decline your way. Itâs insulting. âMy nephew should be avenged! To whoever ordered the murder!âÂ
âI wholeheartedly agree,â The Handâs inclusion is an attempt to bring a truce between the others who felt your presence as much of a disturbance. âBut we should not be hasty and leave every opportunity out in the open.âÂ
âThis is my son we are talking about,â Aegonâs hand came down with a thump on the table. Heâs since calmed down but you know there is still rage in his heart. The fuel of it burning and churning for the desire to find and kill whoever brought out the murder. âWe must search the grounds for traitors, find anyone who leaves the Red Keep, and capture them immediately!â
âOf course, Your Grace but we should consider what this would be for Rhaenyra,â Alicent reminds the room when she scans everyoneâs thoughts and faces. On the other hand, you stand uncomfortably, with the sense of your legs growing numb.Â
âThat bitch queen of bastards will pay!â The King screams, pointing with an accusative finger. âShe is on her throne, laughing at me for this! For the death of my son, I want her dead!â Itâs like a fire has been lit in your brotherâs mind. It flashes and flickers rapidly as he manages to strike and spit out outrage of his growing vengeance on the Black Queen. However quick his temper simmers and rises.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1b2f79d5452b8791417d5ac7a9dafb26/913a32759506d8f0-09/s540x810/8dfd451f63707d55ae41c38d5525f8fc83cf03fc.jpg)
The coming morning of Jaehaerys funeral drags his body to the Sept to be burnt in Targaryen tradition. More importantly, it is to sway the peopleâs opinion of Aegonâs claim and blame Rhaenyra for the tragic death. Spurs of propaganda flourish in the crowds as the chariot drags the casket of the fresh body, followed by the Queen and her Regent. What felt like discomfort and suffocation for Helaena only her no semblance through the entire morning. She is grieving and mourning in her own way. No one can understand the loss of a mother of her children. It is the tragedy she has felt for the first time and it stings her to her stomach. For most of the ride, Helaena could not breathe or look at the folk people, afraid of what they might do. Sheâd never left the Keep like this before, presented all fragile and glorious as the new Queen officially.Â
Even so, she knows you are more suited for the role. Helaena has thought of it many times where you shouldâve been wife to Aegon instead of her. She knows why her mother and grandsire chose her. It was because she was compliant and willing to do her duty as a lady wife. While you had no sense of duty. More or less, so did Aegon but at least she would elevate his image as King with her kind personality.Â
âHelaena,â You spoke, interrupting her thoughts amid her sewing. Your sister pauses and then looks at the piece she has been working on. It was a picture of purple lily flowers, something you had mentioned wanting to see from the grounds of the Highgarden. She thinks of you and subconsciously starts to sew a new patch of thread. Sheâs sweet to you like that, and you forever cherished that side of her. And it's a shame her softened voice always now came with a stutter and droop of a sob.Â
Helaena wakes up from her daze and greets you with a warm yet sombreros smile. âYou are well?â The question itself leaves bitterness off of your tongue because you should be asking her that. You know Helaena isnât one to openly express her emotions and thoughts proudly. As her sister, you honor that but also can become the maternal figure she needs within seconds.Â
âI should be asking you the same,â You smile, looking smug and all. And your sisterâs droopy eyes slowly lighten with glee. Her small frown turns upside down and suddenly you feel your heart fill with warmth and joy. âWhat has the Queen been sewing all this time?âÂ
âPurple lilies,â She gently shows you her work and focuses on your excitement. What she appreciates is your fascination with her skill with a thread and needle. You had no talent in it, much to your motherâs display. But you would gladly watch your sister sew for hours for the fun of it. âI remember you mentioning them a while ago. And I thought it would be pretty to make for you,âÂ
âHow thoughtful of you,â You plead with your gentle eyes, resting a hand on her thigh. You looked like you were going to burst into tears out of happiness for her nonsensical act. You act differently around her and the children, sometimes Helaena thinks you have two personalities. One with her family minus Aegon and another with everyone else. You were mushy and caring, nothing like yourself hours earlier in the morrow in the councilroom. She had heard you burst into a meeting, enraged by them claiming you as a disturbance to their discussion. Like the stubborn person you were, she knew you would rather stay and argue with them for hours. And that you, for her boy.Â
The Queen hums, delighted by your soothing presence in her slightly dimmed room. The room had been cleared of children's beds and toys. Now it lies barren with little to no furniture. The curtains did not change, they were arranged simply to allow some light into the chambers to let the children wake. But now, there would be none and it is left abandoned.Â
âHow is Jaeheara?â The whisper of your voice is the only thing sheâs heard after minutes of silence. Helaena does not reply immediately, knowing her thoughts are too invasive and terrifying to think about. The black gown she still has on feels tight and makes her uncomfortable. She doesn't want to remember the funeral. It was too much for her to reminisce about despite being hours earlier.Â
She makes another loop with bright purple stringing onto her needle. âShe is well and is accompanied by a Kingsguard during her lessons,â She makes sure to include the Kingsguard, knowing you have been adamant about the protection and security around Kingâs Landing. As of late, it felt as though the castle did not feel like home anymore. It became somewhat of a hollow skeleton of a dungeon. With many escape routes and corridors, people would walk in and out without notice. It terrifies her and knowing you, you would rather be killed than have another child murdered.Â
Her response pleases you however Helaena is aware of something else on your mind. She can feel it without looking at your face to know. Itâs your inseparable bond as a sister that you sometimes were astounded by. Helaena calls it a bond and maybe she is right. Your eyes are focussed on somewhere else and it gives her a moment to look at you. Your brows furrowed with a subtle curve of a scowl makes her believe you were having negative thoughts. Were you feeling guilty about Jaehearys death?
âWhatâs wrong sister?â Despite her knowing the reason, Helaena wants you to admit your remorseful thoughts. The veil that covered her face was no longer present and she could face you without barriers. Her lilac eyes look at you, softening at you.Â
âI canât help but think I am guilty of Jaehearys death,â You sound vulnerable, no other person would witness this side of you. Because you shielded this side of you. Your display of weakness was only meant for people like Helaena, close to you, unjudging and caring in your coping. Yet sometimes you think of your sinful thoughts of guilt to be an act of punishment. You sometimes felt you were meant to feel this way for not being present with the Queen and her children when it happened. Why couldnât you be a good sister and protect the ones you loved?
âYou should not be,â Her small palm cradles the side of your jaw, making your stare connect with her. Helaena is quiet and gentle in her expression of words. What she says always has an impact. She is a woman of few words and it makes her speech inspirational. âI- For anything, it was my part as a mother, for letting my child be murdered in cold blood-â
âNo of course not!â You were quick to retaliate to her pleas. She could not be responsible for such a horrific act taken against the crown. âHelaena, you did your best to protect your children.â
âYet I was asked to choose,â The bottom of her lips quivered, and eventually hot tears filled her waterline. âAnd I had no other choice!â
âYou were held at knifepoint,â You grasped the hand that held your jaw. Gently and slowly to make sure and emphasize her attention to you. âI wouldâve bursted into the room and offered myself if I couldâve. But you did the best you did as a mother to protect your children.â You gave her another tight squeeze.Â
âI had no other choice,â Her sobs slowly brewing. And the tears flowed and there was nothing you wanted to do other than comfort your dear sister. She was grieving like any mother. You would be present for her and give Helaena all of the world, to give away her sorrow. However, it is inevitable and you best offer her your condolences and feelings of heartbreak. Because you did love her children, Jaehearys and Jaeheara. The light and beacon of Helaena and Aegon's marriage.Â
Helaenaâs figure dwindled as she scrunched herself forward into a curling ball. The weight of her thoughts was too much. As a parent, she believed she failed the role she was meant to play. Her cries did not stop or steady in a rapid heartbeat. Any further, Helaena believes she wouldâve acted impulsively if not for you, holding onto her shoulders. You were gentle against her tragic and frail body when you allowed her head and shoulders to rest against your chest. Youâre silent in the comfort you gave. Because no words could pursue more than your actions. Being the more responsible and maternal figure, you became a weeping shoulder for Helaena to spout the rest of her worries and anguish.Â
You wonder what Aegon and his sorrows are.Â

Criston Cole was in a predicament. He failed as a Kingsguard to protect the royal family. And because of his absence, a dead prince was left at the doorstep of the king. Heâs ashamed in silence because he could not make any reason for where he was during the intrusion of the castle. His affair with Alicent was more than a passionate one. It consoled him and eased for the upcoming days of Aegonâs coronation and Rhaenyraâs horrific deeds. The knight was stuck in a situation he wished would not bring to the public eye. No one can know of his relations with the Queen Regent. Not when times were suspenseful and dire as to who to trust in the castle.Â
And so, after he challenges Ser Arryk to do the impossible and slay the Black Queen within her quarters of Dragonstone, he desires to focus on his plans with the king. The afternoon following the princeâs funeral, Ser Criston smoothes out the ends of his locks, recomposing his hysterical manner against the twin knight. Of, the accusations of treason against the king and the knightâs code. He should be honoring the Kingsguard words at the back of his sleeves by now. For all that has occurred to him, Criston wants to prove to the king he is capable of being essential.Â
The summer breeze is faint and noticeable to those in the Red Keep. Itâs open corridors and windows, it is the perfect spot for sunlight. The Kingsguard makes his way to Aegonâs chambers, where he plans to inform his schemes of sending Ser Arryk away to Dragonstone. In hopes, it would please His Majesty of the constant restless nights he has experienced.Â
But he nearly misses you. It takes a second for Ser Criston to take a step back and look back at what you have been doing. You, the princess, looking out of place in the training area of the stables. Where knights and stable boys fight and practice their combat. It was a place youâre likely forbidden to be, however, it has never stopped you. The knight knows of your ambitions to fight like your brothers. Youâre eager, more confident than your siblings to practice. He had suggested once to the Queen that she should allow you use of the sword. For self-defense and hobbies.Â
You practically begged Alicent to hold a sword in your hands. Your cute chubby cheeks as a small child were something he remembered sometimes. You were so eager then. He could still see it occasionally when you ventured to the training area, staring at the knights practicing their moves and defenses.Â
âAre you alright, princess?â Ser Criston appears behind you and youâre suddenly aware he mustâve been standing behind you for some time. He knows you come here to think and be reminded of the past. âThe morrow has been rather bleak has it not?â
âRather too bleak,â You groan, crossing your arms and rubbing your forehead in weariness. Youâre aware the Kingsguard is not allowed to probe your troubles further but you rather indulge. âThe day grows weary for the wavering support of the other Houses.â A quiet nod of endearment is seen from the knight as he reminisces about why they had exhibited the funeral exactly. To spread rumors and weaken the queen bastards' claim.
âIt will help us in the long run, princess,â He steps forward as you turn to stare at his gentle Dornish features. Maybe in another lifetime, you wouldâve fallen for him if he wasnât a knight.
âIs that what the Queen Regent said?â A switch and it was like your tone turned to bitterness the moment you mentioned your mother. Ser Criston feels his heartache at your sentiments to the Queen. She was your mother and loved you very much. Something you canât seem to appreciate whenever you open your mouth in front of the council. While she has complained and spouted worries of your deterring interactions, youâve taken glory in the distance between you and your mother. Ser Criston hopes one day you will reprimand that relationship.Â
âNo,âÂ
âTell me, why do you value her opinion so much?â He eyes at you shaking your head with a heavy scowl of disgust. Your hatred towards your mother ran cold and poisonous, under the depths of your hard-spoken shell of a heart. Maybe some part of you did care about the Queen. If there was, Criston had never been able to witness it, youâre too stubborn. And you know Alicent cherishes him deeply.Â
âShe has a kind heart,â The Dornish man cannot more than understand why you probe his opinion of your mother. Were you suspicious? Heâs served your mother for nearly a decade and gained her trust as her right-hand protector. Yet where was he when an intruder entered the castle grounds and left Helaena traumatized and crying?Â
You snarl a mocking laugh, âA kind heart?â Youâre staring at the Queenâs protector with discontent and failure. âShe plots and schemes to gain the people's trust over my brotherâs claim. What more is she than the Handâs right-hand puppet.â This is an alarming accusation because Ser Criston knows Alicent does not trust her father with her boys and daughters. You were an example of that. Whoever she plots with, he knows she takes into consideration who is affected the most. She was the Queen of course. Dainty and considerate of her subjects.Â
âAnother advantage we have over Rhaenyra, princess,â He reminds you of the whole reason why the council decided such a thing. Itâs grueling yet would sway the people in their favor towards the crown than that false liar of a ruler across the land. âUnderstand that everything she and the council decide is to gain more allies,âÂ
âBy simply lying to the public and creating more web of lies for us to be stuck in,â You probe and your lilac orbs glow in a dark tone. You could not stand the ploy they had used for Jaehaerys funeral. You think it was anything but honorable, to use your nephew as a cause and leeway to denounce your half-sister. Ser Criston gives you a look, only a parent would hold when their child does something to disappoint them. And even though he was not your father, he still felt utterly responsible and devoted to you as one. He has seen you grow from a child to a woman. Heâs aware of your struggle in your place at court. He was there when you desperately wanted to hold a bow and arrow, practically crying to your mother on your knees. He was also there to comfort you when you accidentally drove your dragon into a terrible accident. Criston Cole felt some kind of platonic love over you, despite you never feeling the same way. â
Yet he couldnât help but agree with you. âYouâre right, princess. But it is the only way to convince the townsfolk of our cause. We need their support to win this coming war.â He sees your shoulders slumped, most likely growing tired of talking back and forth of their intention to false news. You hated how everyone agreed to it wholeheartedly.Â
âWe need more than the support of the townsfolk to win a war,â Your lips turn to a thin line, contemplating all the reasons why you had to be on the wrong side of justice. âWe have dragons, that is how we win a war.âÂ
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1b2f79d5452b8791417d5ac7a9dafb26/913a32759506d8f0-09/s540x810/8dfd451f63707d55ae41c38d5525f8fc83cf03fc.jpg)
Nightfall was as unanticipated as it was wanted. The funeral and rumors from the council made it unbearable to walk past servants and nobles without being reminded of it. There were many times you wished to stop in front of the people and shout in their faces. There would be no denying it all. However, you were done with it. You were tired of receiving the same piece of news and rumors. It made you hereditarily furious and petty like a child. But no violence has been spilled. Instead, you could only clench your palms, aggressively and move on with a faint scowl. A puff or two would break your cover.Â
Moreover, the servant girls and maids knew what made you tick. The type of gossip you hate to talk and listen about. Since youâve lived in the castle for the entirety of your life span. So regardless of whether they spoke of todayâs events or not, people knew you were not in a great mood. More or less you were agitated, imitating, and not to be consoled.
You made it your routine to visit Helaena before going to bed. When you were younger, you and your sister often paid visits to your mother and sometimes your father if present. Queen Alicent would soothe your worries and nightmares while Viserys sat in silence, unable to speak due to the pain. Yet now, that was before you and Helaena slept in the same room. She was Queen now and had a separate room with her children. It was you who made it customary to ease her worries at night and say goodnight to her children. Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, her beautiful children. Even now, after everything had happened, you wanted to honor your promise to visit the new Queen.Â
The granite tiles were cold. You could feel it despite wearing soft padded shoes. Your garments were loose and free from the restraints and pains youâd worn for the day. But somehow it made you feel anxious and oddly vulnerable out in the open. Of course, it was natural to feel this way after what happened. But everything, even the times you felt the most safe was now invaded by thoughts of fear and concern. You swallowed whatever security you had and moved along the balcony inside Kingâs Landing. The royal rooms were all the same, but you knew which belonged to whose. You knew which rooms were your motherâs, your sisterâs, which had the best hiding spots, and which had the quickest way out of the city.Â
Although whose room brought you the most curiosity was the one in front of you. In the distance, where you stood, a figure of green exits out of the room and disappears into the darkness. Your mother. Alicent did not seem to be in a rush to have exited Aegonâs chambers nor did she look content coming out of it. It looked as though she had mistaken his room for another.Â
Hastily your paused movements began to quicken. As you tip-toed towards the doors of your king, you twist the knob and a soft creak makes you curse out of anonymity. The bed chamber was dimly lit and the fireplace illuminated a gorgeous orange dew that covered half the room in warmth. The drapes of the windows were slightly closed, making the silhouette of Aegon, hunched over more evident. He leans in a cushioned chair by the fire and you can see his unsecured locks, shape the sides of his face.Â
You quickly realize your brotherâs sobbing, saddening and heartbreaking. For all the things he was, Aegon did not deserve to lose a child. You understood very much as him that Alicent had planned his coronation for a long time. Yet now that it has happened, tragedies come down like dominoes in a panic. Lucerys has died on dragonback. And now Jaehearys was murdered in cold blood. Both are innocents from the result of this pretentious battle for power between Rhaenyra. It is when you shut the door behind you with a faint click, you make yourself known to the king.Â
âAegon,â Itâs a whisper with no silence. Covering his face to shield his tears, Aegon does not dare to look at you. He looks ashamed and can only stare down, lost and in failure. You understand his dismissal of your presence. No one should see their king as weak like this. Not even his closest kin and mother. Only that his mother has witnessed this scene a multitude of times over the years of watching over her son. Still, you were not the type to witness Aegon at such a low point like this.Â
Nothing. You wanted nothing from him, seconds ago only curious about his profound discussion with your mother, who did not seem to speak to him at all. Something about that makes your heart churn at the Queen Regent. You walk slowly and only when you finally face him, his gaze is still on the floor, unable to lift his head to say anything. Go away! Youâre making a fool out of yourself.Â
Instead, you closed the gap that separated the two of you. You clasped his neck and held it firmly in a consoling manner. His weeping only grew louder the moment he felt your touch, so comforting and soft. His hands eventually wrap themselves around your waist and he rests the side of his head against your stomach.
Only you can soothe him like this. Itâs discovered to be the most effective way for Aegon to calm down, your touch perhaps was the solution to it. It was never touched upon, this consolation you had with him, there were rare occasions when the prince had become too drunk to return to his quarters to have gone to yours instead. There were times when your brother wanted to hide and be away from your conniving mother and her insults. Sometimes heâd cry, drink, or rant about her inconsolable expectations of him. Because truly you are the closest to understanding that feeling. The feeling of being unwanted and as though you were not doing enough of your duty to care. Of course, you cared, you did everything for your family. Still, it could never be enough to put a smile on your motherâs face. And more evidently that of your grandsire.Â
âIâm sorry,â You let out a dreary breath, rubbing Aegonâs hair. He sniffles, allowing his forehead against your stomach. He closes his eyes and lets out a sad laugh that turns into a cry. Heâs lost so much in a matter of days. No one to comfort him, and his wife silently grieving in her own time. His mother forever abandoned her efforts. And his brother disappears with no explanation. Now here you were, the one he found relying on.
âI tried so hard,â He cries out, snot and tears making his speech muffled and disproportionate. âYet everything has backhanded and slapped me in my face!â You feel a quiver on your lips when he speaks those words. Your heart burns and aches and maybe finally, you can put away your pride and be gentle. You reach behind where his hands are secured by your waist. Sliding them down to allow you to kneel to his level. With his red-shot eyes and puffy cheeks, Aegon looks like he wants to give up everything now and then. Heâs never looked so weak and tiresome.Â
âI know,â You shaped his face with your palms, sliding your thumbs over his cheeks. They are dried of momentary tears when he looks so desperate to cling onto anything to save him. âAnd as king, it is a heavy toll. Jaehearys will know you did everything you could to avenge his death.â
âIt has gone to madness,â His lilac orbs staring at you with such intensity and possibly love. Torn and twisted, you know this is a wifeâs duty to be her husband. Though under Helaena and Aegonâs relationship, they have never loved each other. They were husband and wife, yes but only under law. Helaena held no love but did genuinely care for his well-being. And you had shown more devotion towards his feelings than anyone had done within days. âWhat am I supposed to do now?â
âYou can start by figuring who and who not to trust at court,â You exhale, heart beating like a bass drum when you feel his hands circle yours. âKnow who your trusted allies are and destroy Rhaenyraâs support.âÂ
âThen I need you,â He leans forward, his silver locks tangled in between yours. His gaze was wild and desperate for any kind of refusal you might have. âI need you at court. By my side, you are as essential as any of us there.â It felt as though nothing in the world mattered next only the two of you at this moment. At this important moment, you felt a surge of adrenaline and an urge to comply with his heeds. Your eyes momentarily trail to his lips before discerning back to his eyes.Â
âBecause I have a dragon,â
âBecause you are my blood, you are a strategist and the smartest woman I know in the Seven Kingdoms,â His dried tears make him even more angelic. Perhaps in another lifetime, you two wouldâve married instead and dealt with it more easily. Your mother knew it. Your gransdire did too. Despite it all, they all disapproved of you for your lack of devotion to duty. What more can you offer than your service directly to the crown? To the council? It makes you grin in pride for his acknowledgment of you.Â
âOf course, my king,â And with those words, he closes the gap between your lips. Sorrowful no way but profound in a new kind of serge to overcome the tragic delay. You were right in front of his eyes all along. You, the second-born princess of Alicent and Viserys' marriage. Quip with a sharp tongue and tactics for how long youâve studied the art of it. You were no ordinary princess. You were a fighter, a warrior who well enough wanted bloodshed as much as him.

Nimona: a Story of Trans Rights, Queer Solidarity, and the Battle Against Censorship
by Ren Basel renbasel.com
The 2023 film Nimona, released on Netflix after a tumultuous development, is a triumph of queer art. While the basic plot follows a mischievous shapeshifter befriending a knight framed for murder, at its heart Nimona is a tale of queer survival in the face of bigotry and censorship. Though the word âtransgenderâ is never spoken, the film is a deeply political narrative of trans empowerment.
The film is based on a comic of the same name, created by Eisner-winning artist N.D. Stevenson. (1) Originally a webcomic, Nimona stars the disgraced ex-knight Ballister Blackheart and his titular sidekick, teaming up to topple an oppressive regime known as the Institution. The webcomic was compiled into a graphic novel published by Harper Collins on May 12, 2015. (2)
On June 11, 2015, the Hollywood Reporter broke the news Fox Animation had acquired rights to the story. (3) A film adaptation would be directed by Patrick Osborne, written by Marc Haimes, and produced by Adam Stone. Two years later, on February 9, 2017, Osborne confirmed the film was being produced with the Fox-owned studio Blue Sky Animation, and on June 30 of that same year, he claimed the film would be released Valentineâs Day 2020. (4)
Then the Walt Disney Company made a huge mess.
On December 14, 2017, Disney announced the acquisition of Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc. (5) Industry publications began speculating the same day about Blue Skyâs fate, though nothing would be confirmed until after the dealâs completion on March 19, 2019. (6) At first it seemed the studio would continue producing films under Disneyâs governance, similar to Disney-owned Pixar Animation. (7)
The fate of the studioâand Nimonaâs film adaptationâremained in purgatory for two years. During that time, Patrick Osborne left over reported creative differences, and directorial duties were taken over by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. (8) Bruno and Quane continued production on the film despite Blue Skyâs uncertain future.
The killing blow came on February 9, 2021. Disney shut down Blue Sky and canceled Nimona, the result of economic hardship caused by COVID-19. (9) Nimona was seventy-five percent completed at the time, set to star Chloë Grace Moretz and Riz Ahmed. (10)
While COVID-19 caused undeniable financial upheaval for the working class, wealthy Americans fared better. (11) Disney itself scraped together enough to pay CEO Bob Iger twenty-one million dollars in 2020 alone. (12) Additionally, demand for animation spiked during the pandemicâs early waves, and Nimona could have been the perfect solution to the studioâs supposed financial woes. (13) Why waste the opportunity to profit from Blue Skyâs hard work?
It didnât take long for the answer to surface. Speaking anonymously to the press, Blue Sky workers revealed the awful truth: Disney may have killed Nimona for being too queer. The titular character was gender-nonconforming, the leading men were supposed to kiss, and Disney didnât like it. (14) While Disney may claim COVID-19 as the cause, it is noteworthy that Disney representatives saw footage of two men declaring their love, and not long after, the studio responsible was dead. (15) Further damning evidence came in February of 2024, when the Hollywood Reporter published an article quoting co-director Nick Bruno, who named names: Disneyâs chief creative officer at the time, Alan Horn, was adamantly opposed to the filmâs âgay stuff.â (16)
Disney didnât think queer art was worthy of their brand, and it isnât the first time. âNot fitting the Disney brandâ was the justification for canceling Dana Terraceâs 2020 animated series The Owl House, which featured multiple queer characters. (17) Though Terrace was reluctant to assume queerphobia caused the cancellation, Disneyâs anti-queer bias has been cited as a hurdle by multiple showrunners, including Terrace herself. (18) The companyâs resistance to queer art is a documented phenomenon.
While Nimonaâs film cancellation could never take N.D. Stevensonâs comic from the world, it was a sting to lose such a powerful queer narrative on the silver screen. American film has a long history of censoring queerness. The Motion Picture Production Code (commonly called the Hays Code) censored queer stories for decades, including them under the umbrella of âsex perversion.â (19) Though the Code was eventually repealed, systemic bigotry turns even modern queer representation milestones into battles. In 2018, when Rebecca Sugar, creator of the Cartoon Network series Steven Universe, succeeded in portraying the first-ever same-sex marriage proposal in American childrenâs animation, the network canceled the show in retaliation. (20)
When queer art has to fight so hard just to exist, each loss is a bitter heartbreak. N.D. Stevenson himself expressed sorrow that the world would never see what Nimonaâs crew worked so hard to achieve. (21)
Nimona, however, is hard to kill.
While fans mourned, progress continued behind the scenes. Instead of disappearing into the void as a tax write-off, the film was quietly scooped up by Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures. (22) Ellison received a call days before Disneyâs death blow to Blue Sky, and after looking over storyboard reels, she decided to champion the film. With Ellisonâs support, former Blue Sky heads Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein did their damnedest to find Nimona a home. (23)
Good news arrived on April 11, 2022, when N.D. Stevenson made a formal announcement on Twitter (now X): Nimona was gloriously alive, and would release on Netflix in 2023. (24) Netflix confirmed the news in its own press release, where it also provided details about the filmâs updated cast and crew, including Eugene Lee Yang as Ambrosius Goldenloin alongside Riz Ahmedâs Ballister Boldheart (changed from the name Blackheart in the comic) and ChloĂ« Grace Moretz as Nimona. (25) The film was no longer in purgatory, and grief over its death became anticipation for its release.
Nimona made her film debut in France, premiering at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 14, 2023 to positive reviews. (26) Netflix released the film to streaming on June 30, finally completing the storyâs arduous journey from page to screen. (27)
When the film begins, the audience is introduced to the world through a series of illustrated scrolls, evoking the storybook intros of Disney princess films such as 1959âs Sleeping Beauty. The storybook framing device has been used to parody Disney in the past, perhaps most famously in the 2001 Dreamworks film Shrek. Just as Shrek contains parodies of the Disney brand created by a Disney alumnus, so, too, does Nimona riff on the studio that snubbed it. (28)
Nimonaâs storybook intro tells the story of Gloreth, a noble warrior woman clad in gold and white, who defended her people from a terrible monster. After slaying the beast, Gloreth established an order of knights called the Institute (changed from the Institution in the comic) to wall off the city and protect her people.
Right away, the film introduces a Christian dichotomy of good versus evil. Gloreth is presented as a Christlike figure, with the Instituteâs knights standing in as her saints. (29) Her name is invoked like the Christian god, with characters uttering phrases such as âoh my Glorethâ and âGloreth guide you.â The filmâs design borrows heavily from Medieval Christian art and architecture, bolstering the metaphor.
Nimona takes place a thousand years after Glorethâs victory. Following the opening narration, the audience is dropped into a setting combining Medieval aesthetics with futuristic science fiction, creating a sensory delight of neon splashed across knights in shining armor. Itâs in this swords-and-cyborgs city that a new knight is set to join the illustrious ranks of Glorethâs Institute, now under the control of a woman known only as the Director (voiced by Frances Conroy). That new knight is our protagonist, Ballister Boldheart.
The film changes several things from the original. The comic stars Lord Ballister Blackheart, notorious former knight, long after his fall from grace. He has battled the Institution for years, making a name for himself as a supervillain. The film introduces a younger Ballister Boldheart who is still loyal to the Institute, who believes in his dream of becoming a knight and overcomes great odds to prove himself worthy. In the comic, Blackheartâs greatest rival is Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin, with whom he has a messy past. The film shows more of that past, when Goldenloin and Boldheart were young lovers eager to become knights by each otherâs side.
There is another notable change: in the comic, Goldenloin is white, and Blackheart is light-skinned. In the film, both characters are men of colorâspecifically, Boldheart is of Pakistani descent, and Goldenloin is of Korean descent, matching the ethnicity of their respective voice actors. This change adds new themes of institutional racism, colorism, and the âmodel minorityâ stereotype. (30)
The lighter-skinned Goldenloin is, as his name suggests, the Instituteâs golden boy. He descends from the noble lineage of Gloreth herself, and his face is emblazoned on posters and news screens across the city. He is referred to as âthe most anticipated knight of a generation.â In contrast, the darker-skinned Boldheart experiences prejudice and hazing due to his lower-class background. His social status is openly discussed in the news. He is called a âstreet kidâ and âcontroversial,â despite being the top student in his class. The newscasters make sure everyone knows he was only given the chance to prove himself in the Institute because the queen, a Black woman with established social influence, gave him her personal patronage. Despite this patronage, when the news interviews citizens on the street, public opinion is firmly against Boldheart.
To preserve the comicâs commentary on white privilege, some of Goldenloinâs traits were written into a new, white character created for the film, Sir Thoddeus Sureblade (voiced by Beck Bennett). Surebladeâs vitriol against both Boldheart and Goldenloin allowed Goldenloin to become a more sympathetic character, trapped in the system just as much as Boldheart. (31) This is emphasized at other points in the film when the audience sees Sureblade interact with Goldenloin without Boldheart present, berating the only person of color left in the absence of the darker-skinned man.
The day Boldheart is to be knighted, everything goes wrong. As Queen Valerin (voiced by Lorraine Toussaint) performs the much-anticipated knighting ceremony, a device embedded in Boldheartâs sword explodes, killing her instantly. Though Boldheart is not to blame, he is dubbed an assassin instead of a knight. In an instant, he becomes the most wanted man in the kingdom, and Queen Valerinâs hopes for progress and social equality seem dead with her. Boldheart is gravely injured in the explosion and forced to flee, unable to clear his name.
Enter Nimona.
The audience meets the titular character in the act of vandalizing a poster of Gloreth, only to get distracted by an urgent broadcast on a nearby screen. As she approaches, a bystander yells that sheâs a âfreak,â in a manner reminiscent of slurs screamed by passing bigots. Nimona has no time for bigots, spraying this one in the face with paint before tuning in to the news.
âEveryone is scared,â declare the newscasters, because queen-killer Ballister Boldheart is on the run. The media paints him as a monster, a filthy commoner who never deserved the chances he was given, and announce that, ânever since Glorethâs monster has anything been so hated.â This characterization pleases Nimona, and she declares him âperfectâ before scampering off to find his hiding place.
It takes the span of a title screen for her to track him down, sequestered in a makeshift junkyard shelter. Just before Nimona bursts into the lair, the audience sees Boldheartâs injuries have resulted in the amputation of his arm, and he is building a homemade prosthetic. This is another way heâs been othered from his peers in an instant, forced to adapt to life-changing circumstances with no support. Where he was so recently an aspiring knight with a partner and a dream, he is now homeless, disabled, and isolated.
A wall in the hideout shows a collection of news clippings, suspects, and sticky notes where Boldheart is trying to solve the murder and clear his name. His own photo looks down from the wall, captioned with a damning headline: âHe was never one of usâknights reveal shocking details of killerâs past.â It evokes real-world racial bias in crime reporting, where suspects of color are treated as more violent, unstable, and prone to crime than white suspects. A 2021 report by the Equal Justice Initiative and the Global Strategy Group compiled data on this phenomenon, focusing on the stark disparity between coverage of white and Black suspects. (32)
Nimona is not put off by Boldheartâs sinister media reputation. Itâs why she tracked him down in the first place. Sheâs arrived to present her official application as Boldheartâs villain sidekick and help him take down the Institute. Boldheart brushes her off, insisting he isnât a villain. He has faith in his innocence and in the system, and leaves Nimona behind to clear his name.
When he is immediately arrested, stripped of his prosthetic, and jailed, Nimona doesnât abandon him. She springs a prison break, and conveys a piece of bitter wisdom to the fallen knight: â[O]nce everyone sees you as a villain, thatâs what you are. They only see you one way, no matter how hard you try.â
Nimona and Boldheart are both outcasts, but they are at different stages of processing the pain. Boldheart is deep in the grief of someone who tried to adhere to the demands of a biased system but finally failed. He is the newly cast-out, who gave his entire life to the system but still couldnât escape dehumanization. His pain is a fresh, raw wound, where Nimona has old scars. She embodies the deep anger of those who have existed on the margins for years. Where Boldheart wants to prove his innocence so he can be re-accepted into the fold, Nimonaâs goal is to tear the entire system apart. She finds instant solidarity with Boldheart based solely on their mutual status as outsiders, but Boldheart resists that solidarity because he still craves the systemâs familiar structure.
In the comic, Blackheartâs stance is not one of fresh grief, since, just like Nimona, he has been an outsider for some time. Instead, Blackheartâs position is one of slow reform. He believes the system can be changed and improved, while Nimona urges him to demolish it entirely. In both versions, Ballister thinks the system can be fixed by removing specific corrupt influences, where Nimona believes the government is rotten to its foundations and should be dismantled. Despite their ideological differences, Nimona and Ballister ally to survive the Instituteâs hostility.
The allyship is an uneasy truce. During the prison break, Nimona reveals that sheâs a shapeshifter, able to change into whatever form she pleases. Boldheart reflexively reaches for his sword, horrified that she isnât human. She is the exact sort of monster he has been taught to fear by the Institute, and itâs only because he needs her help that he overcomes his reflex and sticks with her.
Nimonaâs shapeshifting functions as a transgender allegory. The comicâs author, N.D. Stevenson, is transgender, and Nimonaâs story developed alongside his own queer journey. (33) The trans themes from the comic are emphasized in the film, with various pride flags included in backgrounds and showcased in the art book. (34) Directors Bruno and Quane described the film as âa story about acceptance. A movie about being seen for who you truly are and a love letter to all those whoâve ever shared that universal feeling of being misunderstood or like an outsider trying to fit in.â (35)
When Boldheart asks Nimona what she is, she responds with only âNimona.â When he calls her a girl, she retorts that sheâs âa lot of things.â When she transforms into another species, she specifies in that moment that sheâs ânot a girl, Iâm a shark.â Later, when she takes the form of a young boy and Boldheart comments on it, saying ânow youâre a boy,â her response is, âI am today.â She defies easy categorization, and she likes it that way.
About her shapeshifting, Nimona says âit feels worse if I donât do itâ and âI shapeshift, then Iâm free.â When asked what happens if she doesnât shapeshift, she responds, âI wouldnât die-die, I just sure wouldnât be living.â Every time she discusses her transformations, it carries echoes of transgender experienceâand, as it happens, Nimona is not N.D. Stevensonâs only shapeshifting transgender character. During his tenure as showrunner for She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (Netflix/Dreamworks, 2018-2020), Stevenson introduced the character Double Trouble. Double Trouble previously existed at the margins of She-Ra lore, but Stevensonâs version was a nonbinary shapeshifter using they/them pronouns. (36) While Nimona uses she/her pronouns throughout both comic and film, just like Double Trouble her gender presentation is as fluid as her physical form.
Boldheart, like many cisgender people reacting to transgender people, is uncomfortable with Nimona. He declares her way of doing things âtoo much,â and insists they try to be âinconspicuousâ and âdiscreet.â He worries whether others saw her, and, when she is casually in a nonhuman form, he asks if she can âbe normal for a second.â He claims to support her, but says it would be âeasier if she was a girlâ because âother people arenât as accepting.â His discomfort evokes fumbled allyship by cisgender people, and Nimona emphasizes the allegory by calling Boldheart out for his âsmall-minded questions.â While the alliance is uneasy, Boldheart continues working with Nimona to clear his name. They are the only allies each other has, and their individual survival is dependent on them working together.
When the duo gain video proof of Boldheartâs innocence, they learn the bomb that killed Queen Valerin was planted by the Director. Threatened by a Black woman using her influence to elevate a poor, queer man of color, the white Director chose to preserve the status quo through violence.
Nimona is eager to get the video on every screen in the city, but Boldheart wants to deal with the issue internally, out of the public eye. He insists âthe Institute isnât the problem, the Director is.â This belief is what also leads the comicâs Blackheart to reject Nimonaâs idea that he should crown himself king. He is focused on reforming the existing power structure, neither removing it entirely nor taking it over himself.
Inside the Institute, the Director has been doing her best to set Goldenloin against his former partner. Despite his internal misgivings and fear of betraying someone he loves, Goldenloin does his best to adhere to his prescribed role. As the Director reminds the knights, they are literally born to defend the kingdom, and itâs their sacred duty to do soâespecially Goldenloin, who carries Glorethâs holy blood. This blood connection is repeated throughout the film, and used by the Director to exploit Goldenloin. Heâs the Instituteâs token minority, put on a gilded pedestal and treated as a symbol instead of a human being.
Goldenloin is a pretty face for propaganda posters, and those posters can be seen throughout the film. They proclaim Glorethâs majesty, the power of the knights, and remind civilians that the Institute is necessary to âprotect our way of life.â A subway PSA urges citizens, âif you see something, slay something,â in a direct parody of the real-world âif you see something, say somethingâ campaign by the United States Department of Homeland Security. (37)
The film is not subtle in its political messaging. When Boldheart attempts to prove his innocence to Goldenloin and the assembled knights, he reaches towards his pocket for a phone. The Director cries that Boldheart has a weapon, and Sureblade opens fire. Though the shot hits the phone and not Boldheart, it carries echoes of real-world police brutality against people of color. Specifically, the use of a phone evokes cases such as the 2018 murder of Stephon Clark, a young Black man who was shot and killed by California police claiming Clarkâs cell phone was a firearm. (38) The film does not toy with vague, depoliticized themes of coexistence and tolerance; it is a direct and pointed allegory for contemporary oppression in the United States of America.
Forced to choose between love for Boldheart and loyalty to the Institute, Goldenloin chooses the Institute. He calls for Boldheartâs arrest, and this is the moment Boldheart finally agrees to fight back and raise hell alongside Nimona. When Goldenloin calls Nimona a monster during the ensuing battle, Boldheart doesnât hesitate to refute it. He expresses his trust in her, and itâs clear he means it. Heâs been betrayed by someone he cared about and thought he could depend on, and this puts him in true solidarity with Nimona for the first time.
During the fight, Nimona stops a car from crashing into a small child. She shapeshifts into a young girl to appear less threatening, but it doesnât work. The child picks up a sword, pointing it at Nimona until an adult pulls them away to hide. When Nimona sees this hatred imprinted in the heart of a child, it horrifies her.
After fleeing to their hideout, Nimona makes a confession to Boldheart: she has suicidal ideations. So many people have directed so much hatred toward her that sometimes she wants to give in and let them kill her. In the real world, a month after the filmâs release, a study from the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law compiled data about suicidality in American transgender adults. (39) Researchers found that eighty-one percent have thought about suicide, compared to just thirty-five percent of cisgender adults. Forty-two percent have attempted suicide, compared to eleven percent of cisgender adults. Fifty-six percent have engaged in self-harm, compared to twelve percent of cisgender adults.
When Boldheart offers to flee with her and find somewhere safe together, Nimona declares they shouldnât have to run. She makes the decision every trans person living in a hostile place must make: do I leave and save myself, or do I stay to fight for my community? The year the film was released, the Trans Legislation Tracker reported a record-breaking amount of anti-trans legislation in the United States, with six hundred and two bills introduced throughout twenty-four states. (40) In February 2024, the National Center for Transgender Equality published data on their 2022 U.S. Transgender Survey, revealing that forty-seven percent of respondents thought about moving to another area due to discrimination, with ten percent actually doing so. (41)
Despite the danger, Nimona and Boldheart work diligently against the Institute. When they gain fresh footage proving the Directorâs guilt, they donât hesitate to upload it online, where it garners rapid attention across social and news media. Newscasters begin asking who the real villain is, anti-Institute sentiment builds, and citizens protest in the streets, demanding answers. The power that social media adds to social justice activism is true in the real world as it is in the film, seen in campaigns such as the viral #MeToo hashtag and the Black Lives Matter movement. (42) In 2020, polls conducted by the Pew Research Center showed eight in ten Americans viewed social media platforms as either very or somewhat effective in raising awareness about political and social topics. In the same survey, seventy-seven percent of respondents believed social media is at least somewhat effective in organizing social movements. (43)
In reaction to the media firestorm, the Director issues a statement. She outs Nimona as a shapeshifter, and claims the evidence against the Institute is a hoax. Believing the Director, Goldenloin contacts Boldheart for a rendezvous, sans Nimona. From Goldenloinâs perspective, Boldheart is a good man who has been deceived by the real villain, Nimona. He tells Boldheart about a scroll the Director found, with evidence that Nimona is Glorethâs original monster, still alive and terrorizing the city. Goldenloin wants to bring Boldheart back into the knighthood and resume their relationship, and though thatâs what Boldheart wanted before, his solidarity with Nimona causes him to reject the offer.
Though he leaves Goldenloin behind, Boldheartâs suspicion of Nimona returns. Despite their solidarity, he doesnât really know her, so he returns home to interrogate her. In the ensuing argument, he reverts to calling her a monster, but only through implicationâhe wonât say the word. Like a slur, he knows he shouldnât say it anymore, but that doesnât keep him from believing it.
Boldheartâs actions prove to Nimona that nowhere is safe. There is no haven. Her community will always turn on her. She flees, and in her ensuing breakdown, the audience learns her backstory. She was alone for an unspecified length of time, never able to fit in until meeting Gloreth as a little girl. Nimona presents herself to Gloreth as another little girl, and Gloreth becomes Nimonaâs very first friend. Even when Nimona shapeshifts, Gloreth treats her with kindness and love.
Then the adults of Glorethâs village see Nimona shapeshift, and the word âmonsterâ is hurled. Torches and pitchforks come out. At the adultsâ panic, Gloreth takes up a sword against Nimona, and the cycle of bigotry is transferred to the next generation. The friendship shatters, and Nimona must flee before she can be killed.
After losing Boldheart, seemingly Nimonaâs only ally since Glorethâs betrayal, Nimonaâs grief becomes insurmountable. She knows in her heart that nothing will ever change. Sheâs been hurt too much, by too many, cutting too deeply. To Nimona, the world will only ever bring her pain, so she gives in. She transforms into the giant, ferocious monster everyone has always told her she is, and she begins moving through the city as the Institute opens fire.
When Ballister sees Nimonaâs giant, shadowy form, he realizes the horrific pain he caused her. He intuits that Nimona isnât causing destruction for fun, sheâs on a suicide march. Sheâs given up, and her decision is the result of endless, systemic bigotry and betrayal of trust. Her rampage wouldnât be happening if sheâd been treated with love, support, and care.
Nimonaâs previous admission of suicidal ideation repeats in voiceover as she prepares to impale herself on a sword pointed by a massive statue of Gloreth. Her suicide is only prevented because Ballister steps in, calling to her, apologizing, saying he sees her and she isnât alone. She collapses into his arms, once again in human form, sobbing. Boldheart has finally accepted her truth, and she is safe with him.
But she isnât safe from the Director.
In a genocidal bid she knows will take out countless civilian lives, the Director orders canons fired on Nimona. Goldenloin tries to stop her, finally standing up against the system, but itâs too late. The Director fires the canons, Nimona throws herself at the blast to protect the civilians, and Nimona falls.
When the dust settles, the Director is deposed and the city rebuilds. Boldheart and Goldenloin reconnect and resume their relationship. The walls around the city come down, reforms take hold in the Institute, and a memorial goes up to honor Nimona, the hero who sacrificed her life to reveal the Directorâs corruption.
Nimona, however, is hard to kill.
Nimona originally had a tragic ending, born of N.D. Stevensonâs own depression, but that hopelessness didnât last forever. (44) Though Nimona is defeated, she doesnât stay dead. Through the outpouring of love and support N.D. Stevenson received while creating the original webcomic, he gained the community and support he needed to create a more hopeful ending for Nimonaâs storyâand himself.
The comicâs ending is bittersweet. Nimona canât truly die, and eventually restores herself. She allows Blackheart to glimpse her, so he knows she survived, but she doesnât stay. She still doesnât feel safe, and is assumed to move on somewhere new. Blackheart never sees Nimona again.
The filmâs ending is more hopeful. There is a shimmer of pink magic as Nimona announces her survival, and the film ends with Boldheartâs elated exclamation. Even death couldnât keep her down. She survived Gloreth, and she survived the Director. Though this chapter of the story is over, there is hope on the horizon, and she has allies on her side.
In both incarnations, Nimona is a story of queer survival in a cruel world. The original ending was one of despair, that said there was little hope of true solidarity and allyship. The revised ending said there was hope, but still so far to go. The filmâs ending says there is hope, there is solidarity, and there are people who will stand with transgender people until the bitter endâbut, more importantly, there are people in the world who want trans people to live, to thrive, and to find joy.
In a world thatâs so hostile to transgender people, itâs no wonder a radically trans-positive film had to fight so hard to exist. Unfortunately, the battle must continue. As of June 2024, Netflix hasnât announced any intent to produce physical copies of the film, meaning it exists solely on streaming and is only accessible via a monthly paid subscription. Should Netflix ever take down its original animation, as HBO Max did in 2022 despite massive backlash, the film could easily become lost media. (45) Though it saved Nimona from Disney, Netflix has its own nasty history of under-marketing and canceling queer programs. (46)
The filmâs art book is already gone. The multimedia tome was posted online on October 12, 2023, hosted at ArtofNimona.com. (47) Per the Internet Archiveâs Wayback Machine, the site became a Netflix redirect at some point between 10:26 PM on March 9, 2024 and 9:35 PM on March 20, 2024. (48) On the archived site, some multimedia elements are non-functional, potentially making them lost media. The art book is not available through any legal source, and though production designer Aidan Sugano desperately wants a physical copy made, there seem to be no such plans. (49)
Perhaps Netflix will eventually release physical copies of both film and art book. Perhaps not. Time will tell. In the meantime, Nimona stands as a triumph of queer media in a queerphobic world. That it exists at all is a miracle, and that its accessibility is so precarious a year after release is a travesty. Contemporary political commentary is woven into every aspect of the film, and it exists thanks to the passion, talent, and bravery of an incredible crew who endured despite blatant corporate queerphobia.
Long live Nimona, and long live the transgender community she represents.

UnitedHealth Group is charging patients a markup for key life-saving drugs that could easily exceed their cost by a factor of ten or more, according to findings from the Federal Trade Commission.
The report, which levels the same allegations at CVS and Cigna, is the latest indictment of Americaâs broken healthcare system and comes on the heels of last monthâs shocking murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The U.S. is notorious for incurring the highest costs per capita of any wealthy nation, yet failing to achieve an even remotely equivalent improvement in patient outcomes versus Europeâs social market-based economies.
Critics argue that is due largely to the highly opaque manner in which needless markups are hidden to conceal inefficiencies that serve various vested interests. These include, but are not limited to, the big three drug middlemen known as pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs).
According to the FTC report, UnitedHealthâs OptumRx, along with Cignaâs Express Scripts and CVS Caremark Rx, were able to collectively pocket $7.3 billion in added revenue above cost during the five year period of the study through 2022.
âThe Big 3 PBMs marked up numerous specialty generic drugs dispensed at their affiliated pharmacies by thousands of percent, and many others by hundreds of percent,â it concluded.
A thousand percent increase in the price of a drug that costs $10 wholesale would result in a retail price of $110.
This markup rate applied to 22% of the specialty therapies examined, including Imatinib, a generic used to treat leukemia, or non-oncological Tadalafil for pulmonary hypertension. Others such as Lamivudine needed by HIV-positive patients were nearly quadruple the price of their acquisition cost.
Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has been conducting Congressional hearings in an attempt to shed light on the problems posed by these drug middlemen as well as drugmakers themselves.

conclave is a very good film made up of cardinal thomas lawrence having three horrible horrible days.
however the one thing it lacks is the consideration of how much worse they could have been if it lasted longer.
day four of conclave and the draw between tedesco and lawrence does not budge.
five days of conclave and at least one of the cardinals whose name got covered up in the trembley report backs lawrence against the wall and tries to threaten him with a kitchen knife before falling to weeping on his shoulder. day six of conclave and cardinal adeyemi and cardinal trembley nearly come to blows in the loggia. day seven of conclave and people start sneaking wine bottles into the sistine chapel.
day eight and they're passing them around covertly during the interminable voting process. day nine and three separate white collar crimes come to light because the guilty parties are sweating in their cassocks thinking lawrence has the dirt on them and they can't take the pressure anymore, they just can't.
day ten and vincent benĂtez is doing quiet prayer catechism hour in the garden after lunch.
day eleven and sabbadin is snorting someone's vicodin in the bathroom.
day twelve and the cardinals for warsaw and budapest are having a terrible breakup everyone is trying to pretend not to notice. day thirteen and lawrence stays in his room the whole day pretending he has a stomach ache and keeps having his nap dreams interrupted by dreams of turtles.
day fourteen and aldo bellini has brought his copy of giovanni's room to reread, half-heatedly hidden behind a bible cover.
day fifteen and vincent benĂtez has lead by example a number of cardinals into helping out in the kitchen at least once a week to frankly terrible culinary results and growing camaraderie.
sixteen days of conclave and lawrence has to sit down ray o'malley and actively beg him not to tell him anything else, please, no more info, no more digging into old scandals, no nothing.tedesco's tax audits may be suspiciously clean but lawrence is a man of god not a forensic attorney and he will not dig deeper.
day seventeen and lawence tracks o'malley down and asks him to look into tedesco's brother's recent real estate acquisitions.
day eighteen and the new whisper campaign to discredit lawrence keeps trying to bring up his most controversial progressive views but he keeps answering impatiently back with well-thought of biblical references as he did in the homily and accidentally causes a reprise of his canon law school lecture debates. which temporarily brings everyone together and opens the stage for a fierce ideological debate.
wherein lawrence gets accused, not entirely inaccurately, by trembley and adeyemi, united once more in offense, of being the last figurehead for the complacent liberal establishment/a judgemental prig and/or treating the college of cardinals like a group of jumped-up seminarians.
aldo bellini implies very loudly that tedesco is ugly, a fascist and too stupid to ever be invited to lecture at the sourbonne even once, and cardinal vincent benĂtez speaks up with great dignity and strength against american imperialism.
day nineteen and someone actively tries to murder the patriarch of venice. day twenty and it is revealed via sister agnes ex machina and cardinal benĂtez's disconcerting familiarity with very real and more successful murder attempts that tedesco was trying to frame bellini for it.
the proof is circumstantial and so are any accusations lawrence or anyone could make against him of corruption, but this does prompt him to go on a long speech about how the leftist agenda has thoroughly ruined not only the church but society at least and made any possible unity among men a sham.
day twenty-one and someone actually dies, unrelated to the tedesco fake-plot.
day twenty-two and they elect vincent benĂtez. lawrence hides in the room of tears having an anxiety attack of relief.
vincent benĂtez holds his hand tenderly through it and immediately accepts his resignation as dean but not before telling him his secret and having his hands held back tightly, and being told very earnestly that, short of actual unreasonable harm to other people and an extraordinary amount of bribery, he could be made by god's will in any possible variation and still have lawrence's trust. and most importantly, lawrence's papacy.
day one of innocentius xiv's papacy and lawrence finds him in the gardens feeding the turtles instead of taking the next train to a nice monastery in liĂšge and offers himself as secretary of state. and this is why netflix should hire me.

A Mouse Among Owls? - Chapter 01
Fandom: Murder Drones
Warnings: Background Character Death, accidental baby acquisition
Characters (so far): Serial Designation V, Uzi Doorman
ââââ
A vibrant yellow cross stared at the small thing on the floor. The feathered beastâs head tilted slightly to the side trying to figure out what it was. She felt her tail gently swishing behind, disturbing the ever-so-frigid snow. Serial Designation Vâs thermal sensors detected heat emanating from it, the objectâs red-yellow-green colours contrasted against a sea of blue.
Pained and terrified cries were still echoing near her. Their source was a worker who was in the process of dying. The disassembler lacked any care for its pathetic whimpering. In her opinion, their suffering made great background music. Maybe she would record it and add it to her internal audio collection folders so she could listen to it during boredom spells.
There was no need for pity; the gashes inflicted on the lesser droneâs chassis would make it soon go into FATAL ERROR by oil loss. At least, it wouldnât be a lonely death since the rogue machine would join their fallen peers around them. Dark liquid haphazardly painted the cold surroundings, its tantalising smell as if seducing the killer angel for a taste.
No need to rush things, the workers wouldnât return to life and flee nor would the winged lass allow any other rival disassembler to steal her sweet spoils. Normally, V would be playing and taunting with the remaining worker on its deathbed but her focus remained on the mysterious item. By reviewing her recent memory files, the metallic beast recalled it had been thrown near her feet when she dove from the sky and attacked the wandering group of toasters.
Perhaps it had been a distraction attempt? SD - V doubted the workers were smart enough for that, they were nothing more than mindless machinery. Maybe their rudimentary AI had come up with the conclusion that less weight meant it could run away faster.
The interesting oval-shaped object was wrapped by a purple and white rabbit-themed blanket, what was once snug around the thing now had noticeably loosed but still concealed the small hidden itemâs identity.
She kneeled and leaned forward, both clawed hands on the snowy ground, as if essentially cornering the motionless mystery would improve the inspection. Carefully, a finger-blade lightly tapped the fabric only to feel something solid underneath. V licked her chops and removed the blanket just enough to reveal its contents.
It was like her servos had frozen; even Serial Designation Vâs tail stopped dead in the air. Neon purple eyes, hollow and shaking, adorned with stress lines, stared back at her. The stare remained locked into each otherâs visors until the nearby sound of sobs stole the smaller robotâs attention. Mangled worker drone carcasses were on full display, and the twin moonsâ tender light made their spilt oil gleam beautifully. One had yet to pass away, its off-putting sounds worsening the situation tenfold.
A strangled whine escaped the pill babyâs voicebox, momentarily restraining itself, before scaling into full grating wailing. Vâs stringy tail lowered to the ground and curled up around one of her pointy legs, the toxic yellow cross on her visor quickly was replaced by normal drone eyes. The disassembly machine had an unreadable facial expression, her body was as still as a statue except for her quivering claws.
âShit shit shit shitshitshit,â were the words the murder bot gal started to scream within the confines of her mind. Mind, core, and code began to caterwaul against each other as if trying to bend the rivalling wants to its will by being the loudest.
Drones like her were made to adapt to every environment and situation with the sole goal of completing their mission. Yet this scenario was new; she had no prior experience, and the expected outcome would surely leave a bitter taste in her jaws. What was she supposed to do when every part of her was in conflict?
Serial Designation Vâs gaze briefly wandered to the suffering, bleeding, worker not far from them. Its suffering was finally reaching the end, the rogue machine would be of no help if it was dead. The untrained neural network wouldnât last long if V allowed them to âfleeâ together, other predatory robots would be attracted by the dark sweet liquid leaking from their wounds. She doubted the thing would even make it very far, a few metres and the drone would undoubtedly collapse back on the polar desertâs cold surface.
âMaybe⊠maybe I could just leave it heââ, the usually fierce disassembly machine shook her head. Starvation would claim the tiny aluminium infant, a drawn-out demise if not found by others, and terribly agonising for a being who isnât familiar with neglected hunger pangs. Stabbing through its CPU would be quicker and, hopefully, less painful. Furthermore, it was unlikely another disassembler would terminate the thing if they stumbled on it. âToo little oil, not worth the effort,â they would probably think to themselves.
V lifted a single, trembling, sharp blade ready to spear through the artificial babyâs visor. Seconds passed by, the deadly claws hovering over its smaller form, and she couldnât compel herself to do what was supposed to be her job. The ferocious hunter, the one who enjoyed prolonging her preyâs misery and experimenting with how much damage it could sustain before permanently shutting down, was reluctant to tear a UNN to shreds. If other squads became aware of this, they would surely crack up at this fact.
Poor thing was crying its speakers out, scrunched LED eyes, wiggling erratically on the ground. So utterly defenceless, they couldnât even try to turn tail as it lacked any limbs, under the claws of an oilfeeder. Looking closely at the thing, it resembled theâ Nope, not thinking about that right now!
No living being stays young forever, untrained neural networks get older and moult from their infantile shape. When this one achieved the milestone, it would die by her claws or by her teammates. And if the pill drone died before that due to someone elseâs actions, that would still be alright. V will turn a blind eye, as long it isnât her fault.
SD - V swapped her claws back to her ordinary hands and gingerly cradled the robot infant close to her chest. The embrace was warm, so different from Copper-9âs freezing winds. For that moment the taller beingâs fans were audible to the pill drone, the proximity allowed so. Her cries decreased in intensity, the gentle back rubbing and the ceasing of death gurgles lulled the tiny one into quietness. Bawling took a toll on the pill baby, making it enter SLEEP MODE. Dormant in a monsterâs arms, killer of her kind, it was comforting nonetheless.

Okay, but what if this was another clone situation? Danny being the clone of Bruce's sons (either all or a select few, whichever you like best), and being simultaneously scared of the Robins coming with this universe's Batman to see HIS grandpa, and take HIS grandpa away while likely killing him again because of his clone status... Queue panik attacc and supportive, protective Grampa!Bats that does some serious gate keeping in regards to the Batfam and his precious ghosty-grandson. Which when the Batfam hears why Danny is so afraid of them, gets the feels train obliterating their hearts. Then Jazz comes home on break from college and suddenly has to help clear up this mess. So much for a restful vacation. At least they have less crazy family members? -sees the chaos around her- ....Relatively less crazy, anyway... (Ù„ïżą_ïżą)
Halloween prompts year 2 day 28
Thomas stared down at Bruce-no- Danny as he led him by the hand toward what he had dubbed as his "Secret Lair" which was just an old fall out shelter in the woods that had been well hidden and forgotten about. The door to it was old and still buried under years of dirt and plant growth, requiring Danny to phase them into it which made Thomas wonder how his grandson had found it in the first place.
Inside was surprisingly high tech. "You have a secret lair filled with all this equipment but don't have any weapons or armor?" Thomas asked, making mental preparations to fix that.
Danny sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck and explained his only allies were two other 14 year olds who were also untrained, unarmed, unarmored, and unsuper-powered which would explain why Danny was so excited to be working with an adult vigilante who at least knew what they were doing.
The kid didn't even mind when some of his more evil or harmful rogues "stopped showing up" thankfully no one would really question the reclusive Vlad Masters "going back to Wisconsin" only to never be seen again. No one saw much of him before coming to Amity Park, it made since he would become a hermit again once he had his fill of human interaction.
And if hes later found dead in his cheese castle? Well, the body had decomposed too much to really say what killed him. His will left everything to a Daniel James Fenton/Daniel James Masters which visibly infuriated Danny. Thomas mentally patted himself on the back. It was a good call to get rid of that one. The will was a surprise, though one that can only benefit Thomas in his crusade of protecting his grandson. Its not like he can return to a timeline that no longer exists anyway.
Unfortunately this doesn't stop the bats from hearing about "Batman" operating in a city in Illinois for the past few months...

You can't be anti-war and anti-murder and anti-genocide and be pro-Israel. You can't say you're anti-colonialism or anti-imperialism and be pro-Israel. We are not talking about something that happened 2000 years ago, we are talking about something that happened less than 100 years ago (the British acquisition of Palestine and western forces creating Israel through literal force). There is no way to moralize the creation of Israel as a state and there is no way to moralize the actions of Israel against the Palestinians. "October 7th!" The actions of a few do not warrant a state sponsored murder of people who's crime is breathing. It's just genocide. And, anything trying to move the conversation away from ending the violence and giving the Palestinians the ability to finally take back their homes is just pro-genocide pro-displacement garbage. No state has a right to exist. No state has a right to defend itself. And, nothing makes the murder of the Palestinians ok.

I remember reading in one of your blog entries (years ago??) that in the new book you were writing, the main character's *sister* had cancer. Does that mean that Alice was originally the main character of Long Live Evil? Was she going to go into the book to save Rae, instead of Rae going in to save herself?
How extremely kind of you to remember!
No, that was actually a YA murder mystery that I wrote while ill, revised while recovering, and sent out into the world where it died on submission. (Which means we sent it out to about 12 editors and the editor either said no, or said yes and took it to acquisitions - a group of people at the publisher including sales and marketing - and acquisitions said no.)
One editor told me she really wanted and really tried to buy it. Another person who worked in publishing (and has since changed jobs, or I wouldnât share this) said the response at her acquisitions was - if you like this writer, find the next her (implications about health and youth were made).
I was terrified my agent was going to ditch me too, but she said âWeâll sell that one day, for now letâs write the next thing.â
I remember another writer telling me she missed my work that wasnât a tie-in, and I felt ashamed to tell her it wasnât that I wasnât writing other things - it was that I couldnât publish them.
The tie-ins meanwhile were paying the bills (they still are tbh!) and I was and remain so grateful for them. But I also really loved writing them - especially my Sabrina tie-ins, you donât forget the first, and it reminded me I want to write horror and poly one day - and how they got me to love and sympathise with so many fandoms.
I see the burnout of caregivers all around me, and I wanted to write the story of one. But maybe I also wanted to take a step back from cancer. I didnât think I did, at the time. I had a whole lot of things I tried writing before Long Live Evil, and I think some of them were really good. One of my critique partners gave me a lipstick with the same name as someone in the murder mystery. There was a romance novel another critique partner said was her favourite thing Iâd ever written. But none had someone with cancer at the heart of the story.
And even though Rae isnât much like me, maybe I had to start there. You canât make real magic using someone elseâs liver. Maybe I had to wait to be brave enough to use my own liver.
I do get requests for advice on how to cope with rejection of your writing, and I always worried I didnât have anything else to say, but I suppose my example says - if you can, (and I know itâs hard, you feel so terrible at writing and so useless) (and you love the work youâve done so much and you donât see a way forward to loving the next thing) (but still, if you possibly can) write the next thing.
Even if the first thing sells, youâll want the next thing one day. Writing the next thing is more writing practise, so itâll make you better. Write the next thing.
Ultimately Iâm really glad Long Live Evil was my comeback book. I think it needed to be. It took the time it took.
But maybe it was a shade of that past book (where the heroineâs sister with cancer was six, so not much like any of the Time of Iron characters) that made me think of the YA version of this book, which I always had in my mind as something I was intentionally hewing away from - a more straightforward book, a book that might have sold better - in which shy reader Alice was the hero. Sheâs the one with the suggestive hero name - Alice through the looking glass - the heroine looks, and the more projectable-upon personality. Sheâd get called annoying less often (though still some, because sheâs a girl), partly because she is (with love, Rae knows Iâm right) a genuinely less annoying person. Much kinder, much sweeter, and much better at in-depth reading! Her sister being in trouble wouldâve been a backstory, a catalyst point, and - youâre totally right - a great motivation for her to get the Flower. Saving a family member is a much more sympathetic and heroic motivation than saving yourself and one I do love (the Hunger Games, Labyrinth, Mahyâs the Changeover, and I write it a lot!). I think Snarky While Tragically Dying Rae wouldâve been a pretty popular side character, too. I think it wouldâve been a good book! Just not mine.
I love your question because I love thinking about POV, and all the decisions that are the building blocks of a story. To me, the Alice centric Time of Iron is a version that exists. As are several versions of the Lia centric Time of Iron. And versions centring other characters exist to me, too. (Eric, absolutely.)
Speaking of POV musing, I think Rahela the wicked stepsister featured more in the musical than the book. If the Time of Iron series ever became a TV show (and at this point in time I think Iâd rather a movie because it wouldnât⊠get cancelledâŠ) and I got to write it (donât know why I wouldâŠ) I would start with the beginnings for three characters about to go on a journey to somewhere strange to them: Key in the Cauldron, Rae in the hospital, and Vasilisa in the icelands. There are so many possibilities! And I really wanted the sense that there were so many possibilities, too.
But I wanted the chronically ill one to be the centre of the story, and for it to be her villain origin story, and to ask a lot of questions (hence a lot of villains!) about who gets villainised and why. And I thought hers, to my mind, would be the most fun of all the possible stories.
So thatâs the one I made. But Long Live Evil has a lot of origins. Thank you for remembering one of them! I donât think I wouldâve dared tell the story, if things hadnât worked out for me (so far, fingers crossed).
And I also tell it to be clear my publisher was taking a RISK with me and Long Live Evil, and I really appreciate that, and Iâm so happy itâs worked out for them (again so far, early days, fingers crossed, etc).
I hope some writers - whether in the process of submission, rejection or making the choices that are the building blocks of story - find this helpful, and some readers find it interesting.
Let this be one of the universes in which your story is told.

Iâm going to preface this post by saying I donât give a flying fuck about the hate Iâm going to receive for the opinion I will be sharing and I wonât bother replying to any comments attacking me for it.
I fucking LOVE that Aemond killed Luke and I wish it wasnât accidental. I wish Lukeâs death was full on intentional, lol.
As a victim of bullying, Iâve been in situations where I have had to fend off 20+ kids as a kid myself. Iâve been verbally, physically, emotionally and psychologically assaulted as a child by other children, simply because I wanted, strived for and had good grades in school, actions that did not affect any of my classmates in the slightest. Therefore, I absolutely sympathise with Aemond, whose lack of dragon and later on his acquisition of one hurt no one (dragons belong to no one, you snooze you lose), yet he still got ridiculed and attacked for it. Yes, Aegon was also a bully and I hate him for it, but ultimately he grows out of it and supports his family, unlike the Strong bastards who remain bullies and assaulters. Oh, and Aemond tried to hit Jace with a rock because he attacked him first. Accusing him for standing up for himself is victim blaming. People who defend the Strong boys are bullies and thatâs final.
No, I donât give a ratâs ass that his attackers were children. Aemond was a child, too, and they ganked him 4v1. Itâs crazy how some of yâall support physically attacking someone because you donât agree with them. It was satisfying to see him kick their teeth in. Aemond and Luke are only 2 years apart, even if the actorsâ appearances suggest otherwise. Your age does not excuse you being a fucking piece of shit. Children and teenagers appear on the news daily as rapists, killers, assaulters and all kind of criminals. Thatâs the reason juvie exists. Children should face the consequences of their actions.
âAre you excusing child murder?â if it is by the hand of the child they unapologetically disabled, fuck yeah. Besides, at the end of the day, Aemond dies, too, so you could say justice is served.
Still, I would have given the Strong boy the benefit of the doubt if it werenât for this scene:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c10cad612582a74bf7e235a7f97ea2ff/2022bb958b47a712-96/s540x810/2f1427117d1d86279ff5b2ef701ad4f2aa136c9c.jpg)

Lucerys is laughing at Aemond.
He is looking him in the eye and he is laughing at him. Itâs been 6 fucking years. Lucerys is 17 (confirmed by the writers) and he feels no remorse for what he did. He was not punished for his action, so he has learned nothing.
He feels safe to mock Aemond, in the comfort and safety of his grandfatherâs house, where his guard and stepdad can stop Aemond, whom he cannot beat on his own, from bashing his head against the wall. He feels safe to attack Aemond when he calls him Strong, knowing that other people will finish the fight he started but canât win.
But what happens when no one is around to protect him from the consequences of his own actions? He shits himself. His face falls, he stumbles backwards and does not object to Aemond calling him Strong.
