i do think it's a leetle annoying that so much of the chatter about the smoke and dangerous air quality in n america right now is nyc centric. like i do get it bc nyc is the largest city in the region and it's Really Bad There right now but like. also there are other big cities in the northeast us and canada. there are other SMALL cities and towns and rural areas that are being hit just as hard by this

I love trains as much as the next person and wish they were better in the US, but it really feels like expanding service is bound to fail until we fix public transportation in cities. Like it might chip away a bit at air travel but if you need a car almost everywhere in the US then paying for a train + a rental car to save maybe a couple of hours is going to lose every time against just driving your own car.

Like the distance between where I currently live and my hometown is right in the sweet spot for a high speed rail connection (8 hours by car/1.5 by plane), but even if they opened HSR tomorrow I would continue to drive because neither the single pitiful streetcar line nor the abysmal bus service reaches my parents' neighborhood. I might as well just save myself a lot of money and drive my own car so I'm not stranded once I get there.
