8 Tips For Styling Curly Hair | Curly Hair Moisturizing Shampoo
Tumblr media
1. Embrace the curl!: You know, the grass is always greener on the other side, right? NO! Your grass is really, really green, you just need to know how to take care of it! Embrace your curls, love them and rock them with confidence. They truly are beautiful people pay to have hair like you! If you have a hard time knowing how to tame them, then read on. I’ve got some tips & resources for you!
2. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Curly hair is naturally dry to begin with and is prone to frizz, as you probably know all too well! The key is to stay away from products with alcohol and sulfate in them as they will strip oils from your hair. It’s also a good idea to wash your hair less and take advantage of your natural oils. I’d say that’s a pretty big benefit, if you ask me!
3. Shampoo right: Like #2, you don’t want to dry out your hair, and often shampoo can do that. I mean, it is cleansing your hair, stripping it of its natural oils. Try washing it less and use a product such as a moisturizing shampoo like Davroe’s Curl Co-wash. It’s a shampoo but you lather it throughout your hair, leave it on while you shower (a couple minutes), then rinse & condition. So, it is washing while conditioning and then you also add conditioner after that. I have used it and LOVE it!
4. Condition & then condition some more: After your moisturizing shampoo you should regularly use a heavy conditioner. Davroe has this product called Whipped Curls. It’s fabulous. It’s a conditioner that you can either leave in, for you really curly girls, or rinse out, for girls with hair like mine — kinda a tweener. Then invest in a good deep conditioner to use once a week or week and a half. Remember, you really shouldn’t be washing your hair more than a couple times a week.
5. Fight the Frizz: To truly style hair and achieve the look you’re going for, straight or curly, you need product. You don’t have to go all out and spend 100′s of dollars, but you need some good basic products to have on hand. I’ve used John Frieda’s Anti-Frizz Serum and have been happy with it. Davroe, which is made for curly hair, has a shine glaze serum. I haven’t tried this particular product, but I know curly hair women who swear by Davroe!
6. Lose the towels: Well, the towel might not be the problem, but the way you use it. When you’re drying your hair from just out of the shower don’t rub your hair as it will rough up the cuticles creating more frizz to deal with. Instead squeeze hair dry. You might even want to dry using an old t-shirt to absorb the water, or even some super absorbent paper towels. The bottom line here is not to rub your hair dry. Just try to soak up all the extra water you can.
7. Get the right cut: So much of styling your hair has to do with getting the right cut. You can also try finding a stylist that is either certified or has curly hair themselves so they understand what you need. With the right cut & right products, you’ll be unstoppable!
8. Give it time: Just so you know, you can’t try one or all of these things one time and expect the frizz to be gone and your hair to be totally fantastic. Develop a routine that works for you. Find the products that work best with your type of hair. Then do it consistently. Any beauty regime takes time to work; just stick with it and you will see results! Stuff that helped my skin and hair :
Just a few simple tips.
Tumblr media
Fragrance free soaps, shampoos and lip balms.
Hair oil - twice a week. Especially if your hair is dry or normal.
Extra conditioner at the tip of your hair can treat / avoid split ends.
Moisturize before / after applying any serums or acid based creams.
Exfoliators should not be used regularly. It's recommended to use them only once or twice a week. And moisturize after using the exfoliators.
Tea tree oil based soaps and body washes to treat bacne.
Hot baths will make your skin dry af.
Cold baths are always better. If you can't handle... Stick to lukewarm.. but hot baths are a big NO NO especially if your skin is naturally dry.
Never directly spray perfume in your armpits. It will start hyperpigmentation. Spray on your wrists or neck. Or even better.. on your clothes alone. Spraying on sweat prone areas on your body will cause hyperpigmentation.
Hair conditioner can also be used as a shaving cream. It makes your skin moist, shiny and smooth. I highly recommend.
Anti dandruff shampoos can also treat your bacne. Just apply the anti dandruff shampoo on your back and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing it all off.

Saiki characters and their shower habits, inspired by @no-psi-nan ‘s toilet post:
Saiki: showers before bed at the same time every night with temperate water. Has never changed his shampoo, conditioner, or body wash from a reliable and cheap store brand. Has never peed in the shower, and silently judges those who do. His showers are quick and efficient and he dries himself off instantly without need for a towel
Teruhashi: showers every morning in scalding water to prepare herself for the day, uses salon quality products that she got for dirt cheap, towel dries her hair, washes her hair every other day so as to not mess with the natural barrier of oils. Would never pee in the shower as it would be unbecoming
Nendo: showers when he remembers or when his mom tells him to, uses cold water and a 3-in-1 shampoo conditioner and body wash. Always pees in the shower. Sometimes spaces out but then he thinks of the ramen he’ll have later and he finishes up quickly. Shakes his head like a dog when he gets out to air dry his hair
Kaido: takes two baths a day in warm water, uses generic shampoo, conditioner, and bar soap but has an elaborate hair care routine to keep it appropriate levels of spiky and fluffy. Might pee in a shower but would never pee in the bath. Uses his bath time to come up with Dark Reunion plots
Yumehara: showers most nights in hot water to wind down, sings in the shower using a loofah as a mic, uses popular brand name shampoo conditioner and body wash, has peed in the shower once or twice but doesn’t really see the appeal or disgust with it, blow dries her hair so her pillow doesn’t get wet, has an elaborate skincare routine and a favorite pumice stone
Mera: showers when she has the time in freezing cold water that helps keep her awake for all her jobs and responsibilities at home, uses whatever products were on sale, air dries her hair, pees in the shower to save time
Hairo: showers when he gets home from school in water that’s as HOT AS THE FIRES OF HELL!!! Uses head and shoulders 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner because he has a propensity for dandruff. Tried to exercise in the shower once but slipped and almost hurt himself. Towel dries his hair and then runs his hands through it once causing it to instantly pop up into spikes (Kaido is very jealous). Has very strong deodorant opinions. Tries to aim for the drain when he pees in the shower
Kuboyasu: has a lot of hair products left over from his floor length mullet days that he kinda doesn’t know what to do with so he lets Kaido borrow them occasionally. Showers when he feels gross but keeps it short to minimize vulnerability. Doesn’t like peeing in the shower but if he needs to go he’ll squat over the drain
Saiko: showers are for peasants, he takes luxurious warm baths in a diamond accented porcelain tub with the most expensive products and plush towels money can buy while soothing music plays from speakers. Would be offended if someone insinuated he peed in a shower
Aiura: showers every other day with tropical fruit scented shampoo and conditioner and an exfoliating body scrub. Once a week she pampers herself with a bubble bath that includes a glittery bath bomb and some rockin tunes. Pissing in the shower is totes not her vibe
Toritsuka: uses dry shampoo when his hair gets oily, showers once a week and pees when he’s in there
Akechi: king of shower pissing. Makes his own soap. It’s the one time of day there’s no one for him to talk at so he gets real good thinking done. Starts the shower really hot but when the temperature starts to fall on its own he knows he’s been in there long enough
Hii: sits in the shower on top of an anti slip pad so there’s less falling risk, all shampoo and conditioner is on the lip of the tub within reach, she doesn’t take baths after that time she accidentally got electrocuted
Satou: showers for 8 minutes in warm water with common scent free products before bed every day, unless he forgets and then he showers the next morning.
Amp: licks himself

Make Your Own Cosmetics, Get What You Actually Want
Once you've been in zero waste, eco friendly, solarpunk/lunarpunk circles for a while, it's easy to forget the steps you took when you started. There are lots of DIY projects I've been doing for 10+ years now, and I keep doing them because they work (for me). Yet, when I sit back and think "am I doing enough?" I always gloss over the myriad things that have become part of my everyday life.
Making these things won't save the environment, but you'll get products that meet your needs on your terms, will save you money, and you won't have to worry about a company discontinuing your favorites. Plus, it seems like a lot less packaging to just buy a brick of beeswax and toss in some kitchen stuff you already had to make makeup.
Henna
I got really lucky, I always wanted red hair and henna is a natural dye that only comes in red. Well, more of a coppery tone. But, here's the other cool thing: the henna process is anti-fungal and controls dandruff. Half the time, I remember to color my hair because my scalp starts getting itchy 6+ weeks later and I start to get flakes. Coloring my hair takes care of my scalp and I don't need dandruff shampoo to keep it healthy. It's cost-effective, buying high quality henna for a year's worth of color (for my length and thicc hair) is about $60 for 18-months' of materials. I mix it when I need it, and keep the powder in the freezer. Pro-tip, if you or your partner don't like the grassy, hay-like smell of henna, add cardamom or ginger powder to the mix. It doesn't change the color but it'll knock down the scent.
I learned everything I needed to know about Henna for Hair here: http://hennaforhair.com and buy through Catherine's store because I know I'm getting real, quality henna powder.
Oh and a cloth wrap for your hair will let you keep the henna covered without wasting plastic wrap every time you redo your roots. I've been using the same 'turbie twist' wraps for years now. I made them from old t-shirts and they're stained as fuck. Who cares? This is basically their only job.
Carmine Lip Color
No, it isn't vegan. Yes, it's made of bugs. It's also a spectacular color, the insects aren't abused in the process of gathering or raising. They're actually parasites on nopal cactus, they have a simple niche and serve it well. I learned this lip stain recipe from Humblee & Me, and have found that the anti-bacterial doesn't seem to be necessary, ymmv. A 2.5 gram sample pack of carmine from TKB has lasted me almost a year and I wear this almost daily. I find that the glycerin really helps keep my lips from drying out too badly, so I wear my lip stain even when I'm not planning on being seen by other people. I spend about $20 on lip color for a year and that's including the bottles I use to store it (tiny eyedroppers work best imo) and the glycerin. Not quite zero waste but darn close.
Note: I'm still trying to find a simple recipe for black goth lipstick that I like. So far, my attempts have had a nasty texture and aren't worth the trouble.
Eyebrow Fill
My favorite brand of eyebrow liner discontinued the best color I ever found, so I decided to make my own. Beeswax, cocoa powder, activated charcoal, and almond oil made a little pot of eyebrow fill that suits my needs beautifully. Go super light on the charcoal until you know you've got the color you want. My brows are pretty dark but not fully black, so I do a dark chocolate sort of shade. I think I made my last batch about 11 months ago and it's still half full. I use it daily, apply with an angled brush, and it's never given me breakouts or anything. I don't even wash it off, because I am lazy.
Body Powder/Dry shampoo
Growing up in California, I didn't need this stuff. Living in Oregon? Summer would be awful without body powder. It's also a nice way to have a fragrance on. Pour your favorite perfume (I love Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab oils) onto a cotton ball, put that ball in a jar with a bunch of corn starch. Shake. Leave it for a month. You now have scented body powder. It's a decent dry shampoo, too, I just brush it into my dark hair and it disappears.
Tooth Powder
There is NOTHING wrong with using conventional toothpaste if it meets your needs. I have particular reasons for using tooth powder. These include hating the taste of most toothpaste and needing to avoid fluoride because of my particular thyroid condition. (Fluoride isn't bad for everyone! It isn't ideal for everyone. Figure out what you need!) I make my own tooth powder, it works well enough for me and I don't hate brushing my teeth like I used to. 1 part baking soda, 1 part bentonite clay, some ground cloves. Mix it up, keep in a glass jar (metal will bond with the clay, bad things happen, this is why we use glass or plastic for storage). $20 of materials = LOADS of tooth powder.
Cutting Hair
It's way easier than you think. I cut my own hair and I do a graduated bob which is a little more complex than most at-home cuts. I taught myself. I use decent shears (don't use scissors) and a Wahl hair trimmer set. Learn this skill on yourself, and when people find out you can do hair, they'll come to you for their own needs. Great way to provide mutual aid (one of my parents is trans and getting haircuts in a salon would be extremely stressful for her, so I cut her hair and save her money and suffering). You could also do skill trades! I trade haircuts for massages from a massage therapist friend, for example.
Protip: Dust yourself with body powder before cutting hair, it makes the little shards of cut hair way less prone to sticking to you. You'll still want a shower but it'll just be less icky.

Fixing My Depression Hair
sooo i've spoken about this briefly on here, but this year i've been going through a really bad depression particularly during the autumn and winter.
i'm starting to feel a lot better in myself now and to hopefully help get me out of this rut a bit more i'm gonna do another whole ass thread on fixing my horrible hair!!!!
yes, you all thought the plushie saga was the end of my long reblogs...you were all wrong 😈
i have a plan in mind and i'm gonna document the process of turning my hair from a orange dreary mess to a beautiful display of bisexuality 🩷💜💙
Tumblr media
i drew this on my ipad a few nights ago to showcase what i'm gonna try and achieve - and since i alternate between a middle and side parting, i made sure that my idea would work with both partings depending on how I choose!!!!
my side shave isn't gonna be white bc my hair grows too fast so it'll just be my natural brown
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is my starting point on the left and on the right is a photo of me in my favourite form - egg
i have a mixture of vitamin c powder, anti dandruff shampoo and a tiny bit of purple shampoo to counteract some of the orange to try and shift some of this colour - it's been on my hair for about half an hour at the time of typing this and i'm gonna try and leave it on for as long as i possibly can!!!
this is usually my starting point when i want to fade hair colour without using any processed products and it never lets me down!
i will update this post with the results when i rinse it off later and i hope you all enjoy my journey into bringing a little bit of the old me back 🥰
