hc that Kryptonian names are kind of like true names so even though Clark grew up never hearing Kal-El until he was an adult, the second someone uses it on him he twitches and instinctively leans in a little. over time, the response gets easier to ignore, but there’s still times when Bruce (or someone else?) uses it and it just kind of. snaps his attention back over to them, Clark falling away from Kal as instinct fires at the back of his mind, hey that’s my name, why are you using it?

There's always been a tension between the different portrayals of Krypton. Sometimes, it's an enlightened society of crystal spires and togas. Sometimes, it's a militaristic society of warmongering fascists.

When asked to pick one, My Adventures with Superman said "yes."

Because that's how empires work. Those crystal spires are built on the bones of the exploited.

I really like that they made Jor-El speak Kryptonian and Clark unable to understand him. The whole "aliens speak English" thing that happens in every goddamn media has bothered me all my life. Ik sometimes Clark just gets zapped in the brain for insta-second language but that always felt like a cheap shortcut.

Jor-El had a lot on his mind when he set up that magic spaceship okay. The world was ending and he was trying to do as much as he could before time ran out so he could be there for his son. He was rushing. He likely didn't consider Kal would be raised with a whole different language and not know any Kryptonian nor have anyone to teach him.

Bruce learns Kryptonian secretly just so one day during a JL meeting he can turn to Clark and go “hal really thought that haircut made him look good huh” with the most deadpan expression ever

"Crap!" the food truck worker shrieks in alarm. "Don't hurt him, Superman, he's just a kid!"

Clark . . . pauses, then looks up from the kid that he is currently pinning into the street as said kid struggles underneath him.

"'Hurt him'?" he asks in reflexive confusion, and then realizes how batting a teenager around like a person-shaped cat toy and pinning him to the street hard enough to crack it probably actually looks to an outside observer.

. . . um.

Whoops.

"Um," he starts awkwardly, and then the kid slips his pin while he's distracted and throws his arms around his neck with a gleeful laugh and a bright grin.

"Dad!" he crows triumphantly, and hugs Clark harder than literally anyone has ever hugged him before.

The man in his arms is crying harder now, holding onto Clark, sobbing out words in a tongue totally alien, grabbing tightly onto the fabric of Clark’s hero costume, of his family crest.

“-El” the man in his arms gasps out a familiar word around the strange conglomeration of quick, flowing sentences and it makes no sense.

Krypton was dead. They had imploded under the weight of a dying planet years ago now, fallen under their own hubris. Now here sits a skeleton of an empire, sinking down onto his knees as Clark guides him down, sobbing into the stagnant, dusty air.

“Speak. Slowly.”. Clark’s own grasp on Kryptonian is self taught, rusty from missuse, and full of errors he doesn’t bother to knock out because the computer still understands his commands and Kara told him long ago to never butcher the langage near her again. He never expected to be able to speak with somebody. Never expected to have to.

“Is. It. Safe?” the man begs, curling into the wide breath of Clark’s chest. “Outside?”

Clark shakes his head. The man is in no condition to leave the ship, he’d freeze in an instant out there, even in the warming heat of the spring months. Antarctica is a fickle mistress and is more likely to throw a snowstorm than behave. “It is too cold” Clark tells him. “You need to-“ Clark doesn’t know the word for rest, so he goes with the second immediate problem. “Eat.”

The man just grips his hands against Clark’s chest harder, pressing against it, hiccuping against the tears. “My children first. Please.”

an au where Bruce (and his children) survive krypton, and spend years trying to find a planet that is viable, slowly starving in cryptosleep, before finally stumbling onto the scout ship that landed on earth :)
