I’ve seen angst posts about the idea of in a fic or in the show someone tells Tommy that Buck doesn’t really like being called Evan and Tommy feels so bad so he tries calling him Buck (even though it sounds so strange to him) and Buck is upset thinking he’s done something wrong or Tommy isn’t really interested anymore even though he very much is he just didn’t want to make Buck feel uncomfortable.

But the comedy element instead where he still tries to call him Buck but Buck is like yo wtf and is like “why are you calling me that? You call me Evan” and Tommy is just like “oh the others said you don’t like that name I’m so sorry” and so Buck is half heartedly annoyed now because he had a mini heart attack and goes to tell the others he’s fine with it and like jokingly tell them off.

Meanwhile Chimney is just chilling in the firehouse and is like why do I hear boss music? Buck just comes in like wtf did you do???

As the new adaptation for another version of “Legend of the Condor Heroes” makes an appearance in 2024 (in honor of the centennial celebration of Jin Yong’s birth), I am moved to record this for myself.

Jin Yong, his Wuxia and love stories had a deep imprint on how I conceptualise love between a man and a woman, and no other pairing has managed to influence my world view as markedly and deeply as Guo Jing and Huang Rong did.

He fed me my “man feeds love interest”, “man is a major simp”, “man almost always defer to the smartness of his partner”, “man is kind and generous”, “man is a gentle protector” etc tropes to me, and I will always thank the master for letting me know an egalitarian romantic relationship is a desirable aim. Guo Jing is also one of the few male fictional characters I have continued to love over decades. Without his wonderful understanding and portrayals of noble masculinity, I think my instinctive dislike of men would be much worse 🫥

All that mush out of the way, I am looking forward to the latest adaption of this classic, though will likely just pick up the second half of the drama, when it appears the story will finally focus on GJ and HR and their arcs/journeys.

(Keeping fingers crossed it will be available on an accessible streaming platform for me)

It typically involves a premise that is easy to pitch and driven by a straightforward plot. This is in contrast to low concept stories, which tend to be more character-driven with less of an obvious narrative hook.

I mean nothing fundamentally wrong with high concept really, as well as the fact that high concept can be used very cleverly too: it's actually a pretty damned original concept; it's high concept but it's a contraversial concept that adds something new; it's high concept but the author is a master of subtext and you get to enjoy TWO types of stories at once.

But I know very well that this is not what is meant here: agents predicting a sharp rise in the current trend for overly simplified, sanitised and pseudo-moralising fiction, is what it really means.

Drawing parallels between Bruce's grief over Jason and Heathcliff mourning Cathy. The destruction of self and everyone around them, the guilt of feeling responsible for their death and being haunted by it every waking moment.

The same comparison can be made with Cathy and Jason if you really dig in to it, the two being complex characters who are so full of life and passion that they can't help but leave a lasting mark on everyone who meets them. Despite the pain Gotham caused Jason, he still loves it and is drawn to it and is almost the very personification of the city, much like Catherine has the very spirit of Wuthering Heights within her.

'Why am I so changed? Why does my blood rush into a hell of tumult at a few words? I'm sure I should be myself were I amongst the heather on those hills' Jason's return to Gotham almost reflects the same sentiment as this, he's trying to return to the person he once was, return to a time where he was happier without the anger and trauma he carries now.

Both stories show how easily love and hate can get twisted, how love isn't always positive, that sometimes it can be a destructive, obsessive force. It would be better for them to let the love go and move on, but instead they'd rather watch the other burn, because love is misery and if they do not suffer- is that really love?

I will say one experience I will never relate to is all those quotes about having a mother as a girl where mothers pass on their pain and grief, that they're always a dark mirror of you, etc.
