theres a relatively small scene in grian's episode 4 of secret life where he's caving and accidentally breaks a stalactite that hits him in the face and he expresses a large amount of grief over losing silly hearts. later in the episode he crawls home after nearly starving in the mines and finds scar in his egg to which he sorta chases him out and then decides to go try to make friends and regretfully goes to his neighbour who's also not got really any friends.

i drew a small comic about it in November but there are a few parallels there between secret life and double life. first of all, grian reveals that they're bonded at the end of the first episode by dropping a stalactite on scars head at which point they share the damage and scar realizes they're soulmates. additionally, a smaller piece, many double life pairs were incredibly concerned about starving because of how much food they were constantly using because it was so easy to lose hearts and kill both yourself and your partner. then there's the grian chasing scar out of his flammable newly built base, this time without the jellie pandas

the premise of my mini comic what the idea that in getting hit in the head with the stalactite c!grian sort of flashed back to double life and then with all the time to ruminate in it as he was crawling back from the mines he realized it was kind of messed up what he did to scar back then and was going to try to make friends with him again (all the art I've seen of grian asking scar to be friends again with a bouquet of sunflowers genuinely breaks my heart a little bit each time with all the parallels between that and 3rd life-)

I had an epiphany about doomed by the narrative vs cosmically linked ship dynamics so now this venn diagram exists. please add more if you think of any I feel genuinely insane

to clarify: cosmically linked means there has to be some force in-universe that ties the characters together, such as time travel, soulmate indicators, AUs, cosmic nonsense, etc. this has to be literal, not metaphorical. fantasy/sci-fi settings also don’t automatically mean the characters are cosmically linked. these tropes often coalesce with doomed by the narrative but not always!

doomed by the narrative means that the characters are inescapably and inevitably tragic. they usually have the same energy as ancient greek myths or shakespearean drama. as such, they cannot have a happy ending together — it’s either downright tragic or ambiguous. there also doesn’t have to be any cosmic nonsense involved for the ship to be doomed

here's a bit from a chapter of THIKL I've been working on, ft. Drals' first time meeting Torvesard :)

“Of all the realms I’ve walked, I somehow always end up here,” a voice said to Drals’ right. “Fargrave. Beautiful, isn't it?”

Drals glanced towards the voice’s owner. The sound was clearly Dremora, harsh and grating yet with a tone that he would almost describe as soft. He was tall and broad, bare-chested with scarred reddish skin, his features strong and pointed with black horns that curved back over his head. His cloudy gaze was focused away from Drals, over the city below.

Drals took a quick look behind him for anyone else, wondering why, of all people, this Dremora was accosting him.

“Weird place,” Drals muttered dismissively. “Weird people.”

The Dremora’s attention snapped quickly towards him.

“And what of you, mortal?” He cocked his head to the side, his eyes sizing Drals up. “What business might a servant of Hermaeus Mora have in this plane between planes?”

“I’m no one’s servant,” Drals hissed, his upper lip twitching. “If anything, he’s more like a terrible landlord. If I stink like ink, it’s because he won’t fix the leaks in my bloody ceiling.”

“Hmph.” There was something almost like a smirk on the Dremora’s face, though it was hard to tell. “Perhaps you and I aren’t so different after all.” He stepped closer, coming to a stop at Drals’ side.

“Who are you supposed to be, then?” Drals asked, barely masking his curiosity.

“I am someone who has searched millenia for purpose,” he said, his eyes narrowing. “And now that I am as close as I am to finding it, I will not have it torn from my grasp.”

Drals eyed the Dremora, taken aback by the sudden intensity behind his words. “Do you understand me, mortal?”

I was talking with a friend of mine about how the secret ending to aini thematically reminds me of Certain Parts of pathologic(1) and anyways tl;dr bachelor Ryuki is going to live rent free in my mind forever now. Guy who is obsessed with defeating death bc his life has been defined by it going to a small town in the Japanese countryside to learn the secret to immortality only to be made to fight an unwinnable battle against a horrific plague that threatens to take even his own life, all as those with power in the town all want to use and manipulate him for their own needs and the towns other doctors see him as naive at best or outright useless at worst

anyways I wrote a short fic about it because it won't leave my mind. bachelor ryuki's fun countryside vacation.

also date is the haruspex and mizuki is the changeling. ryuki is perpetually sick with the Plague and both of them cannot understand why this fucker won't just take the panacea please for the Love Of God just rest for ten fucking seconds-
