everyone in mcyt fandom talks about bad inventories but i feel like we don't talk enough about the different types of bad inventory & the ways that inventories can be characterizing. i took most of these screenshots but one or two of them aren't by me and i've just had them saved for a few months sorry. i'm taking inventories from various people across various servers (wild life, dream smp, hermitcraft, lifesteal, and 2b2t) to illustrate my point here

like there are inventories that are bad because they're empty:

but then there's also inventories that are bad because they're full:

and, like-- the different ways an inventory can be bad are also characterizing? an inventory can be bad because the items aren't stacked; or because it's empty of anything useful; or because it's so full of building/fight supplies that there's no slots left for doing anything else; or because it's full of random junk. it speaks to a character's position (compare tubbo's diamond sword and empty inventory to ranboo's netherite sword or zam's full inventory of potions) and the rules of the server they're on (tubbo's not wearing elytra because elytra aren't allowed on the dsmp; zam's inventory has chorus fruit and wind charges but no ender pearls because ender pearls aren't allowed this season on lifesteal) and what their priorities are (building, pvp, lore) and how organized vs scattered they are and so much more. another inventory i like:

like!!! that's so instantly characterizing, for both the character and the server!!!! 5 stacks of end crystals + obsidian. 6 stacks of tnt. 3 stacks of god apples and a stack of chorus fruit as your only food. the bucket of lava and bucket of water for lavacasting. the fact that the flint and steel is enchanted with unbreaking. that's a STORY--of the character but also of the server! this is not the sort of inventory you have on most servers! it's so focused around griefing--explosions, lavacasts--and pvp, and the stacks of god apples as primary food source are an instant warning sign for widespread duping. the chorus fruit not for fights--ender pearls are strictly better, and he's got some so he clearly has access to them--which means it's for escaping traps, which means that's a live concern. it's got a lot of pvp supplies but it's so wildly different from the lifesteal inventory in ways that speak to the differences in server rules and cultures. like, horrendous inventory in many ways. also, very good inventory in some ways. also also, delightful inventory! fascinating inventory!!! inventories are such a delightful source of instant characterization i love them so so much

so listen. we all know that if they ever made a tlt show it would be bad pretty much no matter what. so my pitch is let’s just give the project to steven moffat and see what he does with it. by the time he’s done we’ll have a show called “john” all about how tragically and manlily sad jod is and how you know what maybe imperialism is ok sometimes. tamsyn gets buckets of cash, some white guys get acting roles that they’ll regret the rest of their career, and i get a new hbomberguy video essay to rewatch every six months or so. someone call the fucking bbc ive solved this.

I know a lot of people are focusing on how detrimental this is to the Vaxleth of it all, but I think a lot of people are overlooking Vax's friendship with Scanlan in the fallout of this...direction they've gone in.

Like there's literally no more emotional weight to "you were saving wish for me?" or Scanlan bringing Vax back for Dalen's Closet (AND THEN PERMANENTLY LOSING WISH AFTER THIS LOL). Like.......that whole thing is a waste bc Vox Machina could've just apparently waited around 30 some years and Vax comes back, no harm, no foul. Like he was basically lost at sea and then came back and was like "hey sorry for making y'all worry, it's fine now though."

Something I really love about the Silt Verses is how, in a world of gods and monsters, how grounded Faulkner's trauma [and relationship with his father] is. Especially as the season moves on, and the stakes amp up [and up] its so unexpectedly piercing to be presented with this exploration of childhood abandonment/negligence, inter-generational trauma, the indignities and stress that comes with unexpected elder care/early onset Alzheimer's. You're so locked in to these grander, more abstract concepts that your defenses are down! Mine were, anyway. TSV is so good at cutting its grand, complex plotlines with simpler [but not shallower] gutpunches, and it just grounds the whole thing.

Thiollier is a sympathetic character not so much in his sleepy self-deprecation, but rather in what he represents. Namely, in an eldritch world of insane demigods and murderous heroes and nightmare horrors, what if someone were normal?

In the Lands Between, you can’t die unless you’re killed or buried in the right way. The inability to die in the wake of the Shattering has resulted in most survivors going hollow. This is just speculation, but I get the feeling that what’s special about the Tarnished is that they can’t go hollow.

I therefore think that Thiollier has hit on an interesting and understandable idea, which is that the curse of being an undying Tarnished can be circumvented by sleeping. Thiollier obviously isn’t as weak as he claims to be; he’s just tired of being forced to fight forever. And damn if his fatigue isn’t a welcome touch of psychological realism in a story full of epic melodrama.
