02/03/2025 Devlog
Hallo everyone! Tumblr devlog time! My last post was a month ago because I keep missing my notifications to update here. You can follow me on Itch.io where I also update monthly but I swear I am going to find a way to remember to post here.
Summary Bullets:
More sprite variations
Finished up with sprite expressions for Chapter 5

Completed all the necessary new sprites for this chapter

Art:
For Chapter 5 I ended up creating new outfits for several characters. And some new hairstyles for a couple as well. This wasn't something I was planning on doing but just somehow...happened. Ha ha. You'll (maybe) get to see them towards the end of the chapter.
I also finally....*finally* completed a sprite that I have been putting off drawing for ages. I just didn't really have a super clear image of this character and was flip-flopping on major design choices and it finally got to the point that I just needed to sit down and draw this guy. So he's done. He's completed.
And I'm not...displeased with how he turned out.
I got all the BGs ready as long as simple BG animations.
And I started on the CGs. The CGs are the last major thing to complete for this episode.
I have 1 complete.
I have 2 of them sketched, lined, flatted, and waiting for shading.
And I have the remaining three sketched out but not lined yet.
Other Stuff:
I set up the flowchart and got it coded. It's another monster. I think the flowcharts will calm down for a couple of chapters before exploding again later. Ha ha.
Why. Why am I like this?
Beyond that I also finished all the expressions - the 'easy but tedious work.' I think there ended up being over 4000 expression switches.
Upcoming Weeks:
I will be working to finish the CGs. LoL That's obviously the main thing left to do. I am going to try to push out the beta version of the episode to Patrons later this week. I want to try to get at least one more of the CGs finished before that and then I'll wrap up the rest of them during testing and early access.
So that is where we are with Episode 3/Chapter 5. The next time I update here will probably be when the route is already in beta and I'm busy with making inevitable typo corrections.

Resources for Creating: My Go-To things.
Sooo this is going to be a long comprehensive list. I got back to this game after a long time and with a different computer, with a dedicated graphics card, hurray! It made me want to return to making things, so while gathering back all the necessary stuff, I've complied this list. It might be is updated as I go along, but these are the main things I use. Maby one day i'll even finish something. So here are my go-to resources & tutorials; I'm posting it here for safekeeping, and hopefully others will find it helpful. Everything that's listed is here free. So many wonderful things for free under the cut.
Programs – General:
Creating: Blender. Blender Addons: 3D Print Toolbox – comes with blender, enable it from within the program. Originally for 3d printing. Good for fixing flipped normals, and some quick general repairs. Source Tools And source tools wiki – for exporting as SMD!!!! (SimPe: to enable bump maps for the mesh on import). GMDC Addon for Blender 4.0+ by Nopke.
GIMP. GIMP Addons: G'MIC-Qt. Resynthesizer. Nvidia dds?. Doesn’t it come with Gimp?
Other: Nvidia Texture Tools Exporter (iirc it works with all graphic cards that are compatible, doesn’t require Nvidia). For making Normal / Bump / Cube Maps. For high quality compression.
Converting: Umodel, for Unreal Engine (export as gtlf.2) AssetStudio, for Unity. AC Viewer, self implied (+ USD Addon for blender) QuickBMS* and support forum, for basically everything else. (don't forget the required scrips, down the same page). *I haven’t tested it fully yet, but it was recommended here. A tutorial for it is listed further down.
UV Mapping: UV Mapper, Classic (free) and the most recent Demo (for visualization).
Programs – Sims:
Never Mind the Bollox, Here's Osab and MAGIkarp to the rescue!
Latest version of SimPe, works with a non-default installation path. Chris Hatch's updates.
Home Crafter installation, Post by Huge Lunatic at Sims2Artists.

2. Simple Trick for More Realistic Texture Patterns in GIMP, by Davies Media Design – Quick and simple, using the Resynthesizer plugin. Good for patterns.

Hallo everyone! Tumblr devlog time!
Summary Bullets:
The last time I posted an update here was to talk about the Episode 2 public release. And now I am moving on to Episode 3. Let's jump in.
I have worked on some new sprites,
Received some new BGs
Worked on new outfits and variations
Staged sprite positions, entrances, and exits
Coded in the eye colour changes
Written up the recap for Episode 2
Coding the SFX and music cues
Started on Wil's expressions
Made some decisions about the next episode (more below)
Art:
I have been working on some new sprites as there are a couple of new characters that pop up in the next episode.
I've also been working on new sprite variations and outfits for some of the characters (including Wil)
There are a lot of new things that will be showing up in Chapter 5 because the crew goes to a new location which requires a whole new set of backgrounds.
Some of these are game-ready, others have to be cropped, prepped, and/or have variations made, however.
Writing
I haven't worked on any bonus content or anything but I did write up the recap info for Episode 2.
Recap stuff can be weirdly time consuming. I want it to be detailed enough it is informative for people but not a massive summary that takes forever to write up.
But other than that I haven't really done any writing...
Other Stuff:
I have been doing a lot of mostly small coding things - coding in the eye colour changes (which I always do before working on expressions) or adding in transitions for the menus, adding in music and SFX and stuff like that.
Before I get into the heavy coding things like the flowcharts or the expressions, there are all sorts of fiddly things that are nice to get out of the way first.
Then more fiddly things after the heavy things are done...
But for now I've been getting some of the smaller things out of the way so I can tick them off the to-do list.
I have started coding Wil's expressions but haven't gotten too far into that just yet.
I have decided that Episode 3 is going to *just* include chapter 5 instead of including 5 and 6.
I've gone back and forth since the beginning on whether I wanted episodes to include one or two chapters.
I really like being able to do massive updates with 70-90k words because it gives players a lot of content to go through but in all honesty there are some drawbacks to doing it that way. I don't want to get into all those ins and outs but the point is that I finally decided I need to try doing a single chapter release and see if it works better for me, for all of you, and for the project.
Chapter 5 is still really big. On its own, it's over 60,000 words of content so it's not like it's a teensy li'l thing. It's still got some heft.
But yeah, that's my current stance on episode 3 and afterwards we'll see if I'm content to stick to single chapter updates released at a slightly faster pace. And if it helps my sanity.
Upcoming Weeks:
Mostly focused on sprite expressions and getting some of the BG assets ready for the game I think.
Expressions, next to the CGs and flowcharts are basically the biggest chunk of STUFF to do so I want to get that out of the way early and then focus on other things before I tackle some of the other big development things.

Yuzuki: It's like a LDH gathering in Kingoh now. [Yuzuki, Shiono and Amano all belong to the same agency]
Shiono is one of the first people Yuzuki spoke to about having passed the sentai audition. He advised her that it'll be a difficult year and encouraged her to work hard.
They are both surprised Kingoh and Kyoryu are having a crossover.
Yuzuki asked how old Shiono was when he filmed Kyoryuger (18). She was surprised at how young he was. She is turning 22 this year (on 27 Oct) as the youngest member.

Shiono remarked that Kingoh has an older cast. Yuzuki replied that yes, an all-adult cast is rather uncommon in sentai history.
Yuzuki apologised for being "a bit noisy" when Shiono said the cast has a good relationship.
Shiono appreciates their friendship and finds the sentai set nostalgic.
Yuzuki finds the sentai experience unique since you have to spend an entire year together and the cast is bound to become friends, and it feels like there's little time left.
Shiono thought there're still about 20 episodes left, while for Yuzuki, they are already entering the 40s. She agreed that it's starting to feel lonely.
Shiono on King-Ohger
Shiono loves Kingoh's opening sequence. He thinks it's really cool.
Yuzuki: The director was very particular about the opening visuals. The schedule was packed full on the opening filming day.
Shiono: Kingoh feels like an anime production, from the setting to its characters. To an anime fan like me, it is an excellent sentai.
Yuzuki: Kingoh's fantasy world is on a grand scale, I think it may have even surpassed the usual anime. The cast is conscious of it in our performances as well.
Yuzuki: The green screen is always the same, but in reality the virtual asset has already changed between takes. It confused me at first.
Shiono: Actually I was looking forward to visiting the Kingoh world when they first approached me about returning. Turns out you guys are coming over to Kyoryu's world instead.
Kyoryuger's return and filming on location
Shiono: The staff hasn't changed much either. It doesn't feel like 10 years have passed at all.
Shiono's filming only took one day. He only had a little time to greet the staff before his first scene started. It was an action scene and he passed it in one take.
Yuzuki commented it must be exhausting for him to film it all in one day.
Shiono: You guys only started location filming recently right?
Yuzuki: We don't have many outdoor scenes to begin with. The (suit) action team often goes on location, but the kings rarely do, so I'm still not quite used to it. I'd ask things like "Can I touch this?". Because with green screen, if you randomly touch the set, it will mess with the CG composite. So we have to pay attention not to touch anything or risk missing a hand. It's wild that on location we have a lot more freedom in acting.
Explosion scenes
Shiono: Back in our days, we were covered in dirt and bombs went off left and right. Have you had an explosion scene?
Yuzuki: Explosion? Once, I think? [ep11]
Shiono: Do you sprinkle yourselves with water before that?
Yuzuki: Huh? No, we didn't.
Shiono: No way! haha...
Yuzuki: It still went "BANG" in front of our eyes and I was shocked scared, but the explosion actually wasn't that close to us, so we didn't really take any precautions either.
Shiono: We used to sprinkle ourselves wet before we film explosion scenes, haha. The explosives are no joke.
Yuzuki: The explosions are really that close?
Shiono: Yeah, sometimes it got really close. Our Red, Ryusei Ryo, Ryo-chan. He had a scene where he was shirtless fighting the enemy while bombs went off around him.
Yuzuki: Crazy!
Shiono: Like I said, it's completely different.
Yuzuki: Yeah, completely different.
Shirtless Men and Costumes
Shiono: You don't have anyone on your team that wants to go shirtless, right?
Yuzuki: But... um, Kaguragi?
Shiono: There's Kaguragi, huh?
Yuzuki: Kaguragi and Yanma. They are packed with muscles. Looks like the type that will take off their shirt at a moment's notice. If anyone's going shirtless, it's those two. Especially Kaku-san. He is very muscular.
Shiono: Right, Kaku-san. I was surprised the first time I met him too.
Yuzuki: Yeah, really. At first I wondered how many of me you can fit in him. Probably two or three. He's so big, and his presence too.
Shiono: Everyone's costumes look kinda hot to be in.
Yuzuki: Yes. It's very, very hot in those clothes. Kaguragi's and mine are probably the worst. Especially Rita's gloves. Kaguragi is simply wearing too many layers.
Shiono: Haha. It's like he's from a Taiga drama [Japanese period drama] all by himself.
Yuzuki: He's the only one with a haori and lots of decorative knots :D But for real, I don't think the Kings really fit in on Earth. These costumes feel so out of place during location filming.
Shiono: Really? I understand, I had to wear a green school uniform. Well, but the day we filmed together I got to wear something different, just green clothes this time.
Acting with One Eye
Shiono: What did you think when you first learnt that the role requires you to cover most of your face?
Yuzuki: When I went to the make-up test, the director was playing with my hair and covered my right eye. He said, "Cool. That''ll do." I thought, well that's just one half of my face. Then I saw the collar during costume fitting and was puzzled, Half of my face is already hidden, where are we going with the collar? Only then did I realize, you can only see my left eye. I couldn't think of anything but How am I going to perform? How am I going to act in this for an entire year?
Shiono: You could say your tools of expression got cut down 80%.
Yuzuki: Yes. What can I do, and how can I do it with just my left eye?
Shiono: But your performance ended up vey convincing.
Yuzuki: I was very anxious at first, kept wondering if it was alright to keep on acting like this. I kept on filming while being unsure. Before the show premiered, I was very anxious. The time when we were just filming and filming before the show premiered, I was afraid I couldn't do well. Good thing I made it through now.
Rita-sama and their Deep Voice
Shiono: Everyone loves Rita-sama now.
Yuzuki: Yeah, people started calling me Rita-sama ^_^. Who knows. I didn't start it myself, but the fans just took to calling me Rita-sama.
Shiono: There's no doubt what to call Rita but -sama. With such a handsome voice.
Yuzuki: Since sentai started, I noticed my voice has gotten deeper.
Shiono: Think of it as expanding your range as an actor.
Yuzuki: Well, that is a good thing.
Shiono: I don't think many actresses have such a deep voice, that will surely become your strength.
Yuzuki: Yeah, but at first I had a lot of trouble with it. It was difficult to project loudly while holding my pitch down. It might even turn into a mumble and become difficult to hear sometimes. However, Rita needs to speak clearly and decisively. As a judge, Rita needs to give speeches and verdicts. That was a bit of struggle but it got better as filming went on.

Rip of the week: 03/02/2025
Tribute to a MAD Agent
Season 3 Featured on: Inspector Gunner 2 With Critic

One of the first ever rips I wanted to highlight when I first started this blog was Season 2's 【=3】e-MUNO Disco (vs. 音MAD AGENT). I would argue even today that it's more or less an essential listen for those looking to learn what makes SiIvaGunner such a special channel, and was likewise was one of the first rips to truly make me fascinated by the art of high quality ripping way back in the day. That affection I felt - and still feel - for it was, quality aside, in large part due to its release timing; back on ULTRA S+G, I made an effort to detail how Season 2 in particular was such a hugely exciting time to be a SiIvaGunner fan. There was a real sense of community and investment in all that the channel was doing, following the excitement of its return past the planned ending, the insane amount of effort going into keeping the story and lore going with the Christmas Comeback Crisis, and how so many events like Smooth day covered on Haltmanna feat. Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 were designed to be so intrinsically tied to the channel's lore. It was inevitable that that momentum couldn't be continued forever, and Season 3 became a more lower-key, transitional period in the channel's life as the team figured out just where to pull SiIvaGunner going forward - yet from that reflective period spawned one of the most memorable events in the channel's life, all distilled perfectly with Tribute to a MAD Agent; April Fools 2018, the Nostalgia Critic Takeover.
Barring just the first King for a Day Tournament that I've still only covered briefly back on FINAL DESTINATION, I feel like the Nostalgia Critic takeover is more or less THE event to remember from Season 3. Its core premise is one I've already covered in some detail on CG Man HD Remastered Edition; with Doug Walker in charge of the channel now over two years past its initial Season 1 run, the event sought to evoke nostalgia from those of who had been following since the channel's absolute earliest days. Setting aside all lore, all progress, all the sights toward the future, the Nostalgic Critic takeover became like a prelude for what something like Season 7 would later relish in with rips like Our Sweet Parsley, to pay tribute to what had come before. The takeover achieved this nostalgic effect through a multitude of means; this was the period where lots of the original GiIvaSunner rips of January-March 2016 were first reuploaded, where old amateurish rips were lovingly remastered along the lines of Fragile Snowman (Remastered) or what we'd see way later on Violet Snow Memories. This introspective feel had prior in the season only been felt through the expected increase in quality in rip output, but now for the first time in months it felt as if so many parts of the community were on the same page, reflecting on the same rips, remembering just how many stupid bits Season 1 had, and overall just taking a step back to recognize just how far everything had come in just two short years.
It's that sense of fleeting community - that conversation between you, your fellow viewers and the team maintaining kayfabe behind a YouTube account - that sat at the core of my engagement with the SiIvaGunner channel. The core that was beating so strongly throughout those first two seasons of the channel, the core I've tried writing about for rips like go home youre drunk man, and the core that I could feel once again here in Season 3 through Doug Walker's forceful interference. Yet...that is only half the story, only half of the takeover's nature. Once it all began on April 1st 2018, Critic was unknowingly joined in his attempt to rule the channel by Inspector Gadget; to some, but a cartoon character from a bygone age, but to SiIvaGunner fans who followed Season 2, a demon thought to have been vanquished long ago. His inexplicable rise to power in Season 2 was one of the absolute highlights of that run, a sense of panic and unease spreading through the community as for what this meant for the status quo of SiIvaGunner (one we're undergoing Right Now at the start of Season 9, funny enough), all of which I covered all too briefly back on my writing on Become as Gadget. And so, the takeover was twofold; We had the Critic giving us throwbacks to the budding months of Season 1, Inspector Gadget giving us that constant sense of unease felt during his Season 2 run, and the two combined served as a further extension of the "Minecraft with Gadget" bit that had originally provoked the latter's prominence as a channel meme to begin with; a critic and a figment of his imagination, butting heads in a way that felt oh so typical of the old age of YouTube.
With all that preamble out of the way, it's hopefully made somewhat clear just how effective the Nostalgia Critic With Gadget (or whatever its proper name ought to be) takeover truly was in reminding us of how much love we still hold for SiIvaGunner; and, in turn, how much love SiIvaGunner's team holds for itself, holistically. Enter, then, Dirty Spaceman's Tribute to a MAD Agent, wrapping up everything I've thus far covered into one simple package. Without all the aforementioned context provided, the combination of its rip title and the rip's contents may make very little sense - why would a Pokémon Ruby rip of YO-KAI DISCO from Mamorukun Curse! be a "Tribute to a MAD Agent"? - but with the context available, a viewer can suddenly triangulate just what the rip is made in tribute TO; the aforementioned 【=3】e-MUNO Disco (vs. 音MAD AGENT), the channel's at-that-time most prominent rip using YO-KAI DISCO. The connection was easy to make passively at the time both due to the song's lack of coverage on the channel otherwise, but also because both the rip and its tribute here employ the same slight speed-up to the source song, something that, as I would later find out, many famous YTPMVs/MADs of the song such as wazgul's SEN-TRY Disco. This would further be done on future YO-KAI DISCO rips like D-VA DISCO from Season 4 Episode 1, but back in Season 3 it was a connection that felt almost exclusive to these two rips; a tribute, then, hence its namesake.
And indeed, beyond being a tribute, Tribute to a MAD Agent is a damn good rip in its own right. Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald has an absolutely iconic soundscape, typically lead by loud brass, yet on Route 111 is led by an iconic bouncy synth with the big-band sound instead delegated to the song's backing and percussion. This lead synth is a lot chirpier than the one in the original YO-KAI DISCO yet still captures that same bouncy energy, aided tremendously by the little details surrounding it in this arrangement. No part of Route 111's original melody persists here; akin to rips like Float Islands (Kirby 64 Arrangement), this rip seeks to wholly arrange its song using only instruments from its source game and finds tons of wiggle room for small details throughout that process, such as the subtle call-and-responses in the melody as heard in parts like 0:34, the lead synth met with the sound of a distinctly different synth replying to its inquiry in kind.
Moreover, though, I can't shake the feeling that the choice of Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire as the game to do this tribute to was a deliberate one. Dirty Spaceman didn't begin ripping until early into Season 2's life, and doesn't have the *most* extensive list of contributions, yet is also a ripper who nevertheless strikes me as very aware of the channel's entire legacy. The one prior rip of his I've covered on here, Maskettaman - Dr. Pavel's Fly-So-Good, was yet another sort of tribute; a love letter to Baneposting, a meme previously quite prominent during the channel's first year, yet faded from use due to its unconventional nature as a source. He knows internet history, and he knows SiIvaGunner history; thus, the choice of game for Tribute to a MAD Agent, to use the game used for the very first SiIvaGunner rip ever made and released, feels like all too deliberate of a choice. Like mentioned back on Magolor's Shoppe Fusion Collab, few games have as close of a tie to the earliest of SiIvaGunner's days as Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire, and few moments in the channel's life were as focused on remembering said early days as the very event Tribute to a MAD Agent was made for; in that way, the rip is able to at once reference Season 1 and Season 2 in a way that's surprisingly understated yet immediately understandable for those watching.
I'll be honest and say that I spent a lot of the lead-up to writing this post simply looking for parts of Season 3 that I'd remember enough to write about - mind, with Tribute to a MAD Agent this is now the fourth-or-so time that I cover this very event. Yet I mean not to suggest that it was the one good part of an underwhelming year; rather, that the Critic and Gunner were able to more clearly amplify the essence that the season as a whole was sort of going for, amplifying an understated pursuit to continue reminding us all of why we all got so invested in this stupid channel in the first place. Season 3 was a period of things bubbling, with rips and rippers continuing to grow, yet never truly exploding in ways that felt out of step with what the channel ought to be. Starting off small, hitting a sudden, hastily-planned, channel-changing event partway through the year, with sprinkles conveying the meaning of the greater whole dished out in the midst of a sea of self-expression...in that way, Season 3 is like a microcosm of SiIvaGunner's entire existence, a summary of its life only two years after it began. Tribute to a MAD Agent is not the most glamorous, standout work of the year, not the most impressive effort that had been made at that point; yet it, like so many rips of its prior Seasons I've covered before, serves as a small sample, a taste test, of one of the many flavors that make this channel so worth having followed in the long term; for the jokes, for the bangers, and for the memories.
