Calling all conductors/music directors/people with music theory!
I need your help with a really specific part of the forthcoming JCS book.
There is a chapter where I break down the characters, providing basic info about them in the show, recommended reading for cast or creatives who like to construct backstories or find a motivation that isn't in the script (let's face it, this is the Bible, everyone and their mom has an opinion and wrote a book, and occasionally they're useful), sort of a mini-profile. As part of that, I include vocal ranges, excerpted from audition notices or other sources.
I've been relying on four sources so far:
A handwritten document compiled by an MTI employee at some point in the '90s when MTI licensed it.
A set of vocal ranges from the late JCS.net that the proprietor knew was wrong but threw up online anyway, hoping someone would write in and offer assistance.
A set from Ted Neeley's most recent U.S. live tour (2006-10).
Another from the currently running 50th-anniversary national tour.
Here's the thing: they differ enough in places that I don't know if one is more correct than the other, or if the truth lies somewhere in between.
I understand this isn't an exact science. Two things will often mess up vocal ranges: one is that a lot of scores write male vocals in treble clef and don't consider it sounding an octave down, and the other is that on keyboards, there are two standards of what is middle C, depending on the manufacturer. But…
…would someone like to help me hash it out, comparing ranges provided to the scores and determining which is correct (or closest to it), so I can put the most accurate info in the book? (Scores and ranges will be provided.)

Paul Shaffer: 50 Years In the Biz
Paul Shaffer: 50 Years In the Biz
Dadgum it, I’m not going to allow the death of Freddie Roman or the 80th anniversary of the Cocoanut Grove Fire divert me celebrating the birthday of Paul Shaffer (b. 1949), though I’m quite certain that he, more than most, would grok the significance of those two events. 2022 marks 50 years of a career that been legendary since the very beginning. Fresh out of college, Shaffer had been playing…

More random Nimona headcanons
Bal is one of those people who isn’t allergic to anything except one random medication that no one uses
Ambrosius calls him a lucky bastard every time it’s brought up because he’s allergic to everything
His allergy list is at least three pages long and he doesn’t remember a single thing on that list
Whenever they go out to eat Bal has to remind him “No you can’t eat that it has olives” “Not that either love it’s got lemon” and so on
Most of his allergic reactions are pretty tame so he’ll eat it anyway
And it gives Bal and Nimona so much fucking anxiety
One time Bal walked in on Nimona chasing Ambrosius around the kitchen yelling “Spit out the carrots Nemesis you don’t even like them that much!!”
Whenever he eats alone he refers to it as a game of Russian roulette
Bal refers to it as the reason he has high blood pressure
Because Bal and Ambrosius grew up in the limelight (for very different reasons) there are a million pictures of them through the years
And they use those videos to bully the hell out of each other
Bal can quote the video from the beginning of the movie not because it was an important moment in his childhood
But because Ambrosius will quote it at the most random times throughout the day
Bal will do something small like kill a bug or chase out an animal that Nimona brought in
And he’ll hear Ambrosius mumble “I’m here to slay monsters and protect our kingdom”
He was a little worried Nimona would react badly to this habit but he started joining in
One time he killed a spider and Ambrosius asks “Are you slaying monsters moonbeam?” Nimona yells from the other room “I’m so proud of him he’s truly protecting our kingdom”
There are a million photos of baby Ambrosius on the internet
And Bal made a PowerPoint presentation ranking their cuteness factor out of 10 (100 was the lowest score he got and it was a picture of him with the ugliest bowl cut you’ve ever seen)
And made Ambrosius sit through it
That was the most loved and mortified he had felt in a long time
Nimona uses low-quality pictures of them as reaction photos
There have been times when Nimona asks “Can we eat out tonight” and Bal tells her no and she sends him this
Tumblr media
He’ll text back “Is that my fucking wanted poster?!”
She asked Ambrosius if there was any ice cream left and he said no he expected her to call him and complain he didn’t expect this
Tumblr media
He calls her yelling “When the fuck did that happen?!”
And she hangs up immediately to let Bal deal with it

percabeth is so well done in tlt musical. the lyrical parallels. "someday soon someone will notice me" and annabeth realizes percy noticed her. the bickering like a married couple. percy singing "is she real?" and then in one of the cut songs annabeth sings the same thing but about him UGH. i may or may not be the #1 pjo musical fangirl.

"My heart's far, far away." - "Home" (Beauty and the Beast) "Cause my heart is wherever you are." - "Can I Have This Dance?" (High School Musical 3: Senior Year)
"One of the wonderful things about being a producing/director on a series is that you get to tell a story over time. In the image above (season 2) the steadycam move caught Ricky in the doorway for a fraction of a moment as Gina in the foreground sheds a tear for him. In the image below (season 4) Ricky and Gina, now dance together in the same angle and framing. As a director, I really like book ends and used blocking as a way of calling back to moments without directly referencing them." - Kimberly McCullough (director of 2x06, "Yes, And," and 4x03, "A Star is Reborn")

breaking my silence on chess the musical to say that i would literally not give a fuck about this show if i thought it was good or fully successful at what it is saying. SORRY! i love how messy she is. i love how since 1984 and continuing to this very day people with entirely different perceptions of and opinions on the musical have attempted in their own ways to "make it good" by creating all these different versions with like notably different plots, characterization, and song order, and i love how fucking bad the vast majority of these are despite it all. i hope people keep trying to fix chess the musical forever and until the end of time. i hope no one ever figures it out. i want every currently living theatre director in existence to make their own version and for all these versions to come out on broadway at the same time, making that year's musical season entirely comprised of various different versions of the cold war chess musical by tim rice and half of abba. i want not only our greatest minds but also our middlest-of-the-road and worst minds to come up with their own conclusions as to why chess does not entirely work in its original form or any subsequent forms like to really think about it and yes i do want someone to dedicate their entire life to perfecting chess by releasing version after version after version until they die peacefully but still, as always, in the grips of obsession. i want marriages to be broken up. i want mental states to be shattered. i dream of this world

magazines talking about ewan mitchell's performance as martin for the fontaines d.c. ‘in the modern world’ music video.
UPROXX about the ‘in the modern world’ mv.
“Mitchell embodies the track’s deep emotion conflict heard when the band sings: I feel alive / In the city / You despise / Wait for the day / When you come / Riding on by / Seems so hard just to be / If it matters / You complete me.”
“Throughout the video, Mitchell literally fights his off in a series of suspense car jujitsu matches.”
“After narrowly defeating foes (…) Mitchell just barely makes it home to fight another day. Isn’t that the sad story of life?”
KNOTORYUS about the ‘in the modern world’ mv.
“You need a good actor to get [carjitsu as a physical manifestation of emotions] across in just a few minutes of sweaty seatbelt-choking action, but Ewan Mitchell is the right man for the job. Nailed it. Pinned it. Heel-hooked it.”
PROMONEWSTV about the ‘in the modern world’ mv.
“The director who made her music video debut with the intense drama of Here's The Thing (after her acclaimed feature debut Hoard) quickly returns to duties with the Fontaines with an extraordinary piece of work for In A Modern World: a surreal comedy-drama, featuring an incredible central performance from Ewan Mitchell (House of the Dragon, Saltburn) - as a character engaged in the netherworld of a very niche, indeed bizarre and dangerous sport.”
“It's car-jitsu - jiu-jitsu, within the interior of a car.”
“Invented just a couple of years ago, in Chicago, Mitchell's character is the protagonist through which Carmoon explores an absurd yet compelling experience.”
“At first, its just the raw, explosive physicality involved of clashing bodies within a ridiculously small space - which is surprising and hugely intense in itself.”
“Then the director adds another dimension to the brutal clash of bodies - what is happening outside the car, the voyeuristic relationship of passers-by who become the audience to Mitchell and a succession of combatants, a kind of sexual frisson that is created through the intensity of the action.”
“The parallels with another in-car activity is undeniable.”
“It's Fight Club crossed with dogging.”
“Horrible, painful to watch yet hilarous, it's mesmerizing stuff, a fever dream.”
“And it's hard to undersell how good Mitchell is in this.”
“Or how impressive it is in terms of the vision and world creation by Carmoon.
“Just great.”
NME about the ‘in the modern world’ mv.
“Directed by Luna Carmoon, who previously shot the video for ‘Here’s The Thing‘, the video stars Ewan Mitchell (House Of The Dragon, Saltburn) and sees him jump into the brutal, passionate and fetishistic theatre of a Car Jitsu bout.”
