Things about Ron Speirs that live rent free in my head
-“SPEIRS, GET YOURSELF OVER HERE!”
I don’t know what I like most about this scene. The fact Dick just furiously passed Sink and ignored his commander, because his boys were getting screwed? Speirs running to him and then without a single word sprinting to do the job? Or Nixon with his binoculars liveblogging the whole battle? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-The change in his voice and intonation between “I’m taking over” and “First Sergeant Lipton!”.
-The church scene, when Lipton says Easy men didn’t care about the gossips… It was HILARIOUS. Like, Lip? Sweetheart? Ron scared the shit out of Christenson and some poor innocent kids in the same damned ep. I could hear Pat’s sobbing in the background during that scene, mixed with the nuns’ chorus.
-A man needs a hobby and his was trolling people. Aside of the whole “did he or did he not shot the prisoners”, he enjoyed the gossips, appearing suddenly out of nowhere, while giving creepy speeches and traumatizing people. And he did it fabulously. Legend.
-His little, millisecond pause, when we watch his back while Lipton says “Well, maybe they keep talking about it because they never heard Tercius deny it”.
-And two things about this scene. Lipton knows Speirs was trolling people and it was amusing him. And Ron’s answer “Well, maybe that’s because Tercius knew there was some value to the men thinking he was the meanest, toughest sonofabitch in the whole Roman legion” - he knows Lip knows he was trolling people and (not directly) admits it. He never did that to anyone else, what also means he really respected Lipton (gross sobbing).
-Anyway, this whole church scene is a pure love and I adore every second of it.
-He was a history nerd ;_; I’m kind of sad, we didn’t see him and Buck taking about some ancient battles in Gaul.
-He kept tabs on Easy xD how much he’s learnt from creeping in the shadows and eavesdropping – no one knows xD
-The fact real Speirs was shot in the ass on some of his solo patrols proves he was just meant to be Easy’s CO. Fucking destiny.
-His favourite sergeant was Grant (ok, ok, put the pitchforks DOWN, I said sergeant NOT lieutenant, geez).
-The fact no one called him “Sparky” in the show is a crime against humanity. But at least we got one “Ron” from Winters. Still…
-I think I read somewhere here, that he wore his helmet so low, because it was too big and… yes? Absolutely? Whoever noticed it – I bow to you.
And it reminds me all the promo pics where we have most of the characters standing together and he stands on the side, a little farer and looking awkwardly like “mom said I have to socialize more, so here I am, ugh…”.
-Also, he looks tiny compared to the other guys on many shots/pics, what is hilarious on many levels.
-I realized it after the second watch, that he not only stole cigarettes from Buck, but he offered them to the German POWs. Not his cigarettes, but the shit he stole. I don’t know why, but it’s just so super HIM xD
-I wonder when exactly Easy Company did realize that their new CO is not exactly the meanest, toughest sonofabitch in the army, but a big ass weirdo, with poor social skills, suspicious hobbies and sticky hands.
-Ep 8 look >>>>>>>>>>>>> everything else.
-The moment when Webster throws himself to the ground and Ron just stands in the background, watching the missile like it was meh (he had a personal ranking of “Things that almost killed me” and that missile was not even on the Top 10).
-“No. You don’t have any experience.” How the fuck Jones didn’t drop dead right after is beyond me. Also, A+++ acting.
-The fact is that Lipton was his social-skills-only-working-brain-cell and it’s beautiful.
-The moment Perconte asked him to give him back his lighter, I guess it was the moment Speirs knew his reputation crumbled to dust xD
-Unpopular opinion, but I don’t think Malarkey scared him on a purpose. I think it was accidentally, what for me, makes it even funnier. But the fact Don started as someone who was scared of Speirs like no one else and ended scarring him – it just warms my heart.
-And that pure annoyance on Ron’s face when Malarkey’s approaches him a second after he scared him, will never stop making me laugh. It the look could kill the bottle in Don’s hands would explode.
-On some point Lipton was sitting with his head in his hands and moaning that he was not paid enough to keep his crazy CO with suicidal tendencies alive and Luz was there-thereing him.
-All the things he's done to keep Grant alive.
-Basically, Speirs gives me a stray cat vibes and the fact he kind of, adopted Lipton and whole Easy proves it.
-And finally, the way he went from “we are all dead, just accept it” to “ok, I guess I’m going to stay in the army to keep the idiots alive (sighs)” is one of the best character developments and is so… sooo … you know? ;_;
Anyway, the thing I like the most about his character is how unexpected he is. I didn’t expect to like him so much. I didn’t expect him to change so much in such splendid way. But here I am.
We meet him in the show as “a cold blooded soldier” stereotype and we learn in the end he was just deeply compassionate man (and a weirdo), who applied being a sociopath to be a better man of war. It just makes him very human - thanks to the fact his character was based on a real man, I guess. And that applies to all BOB’s characters.
And BIG kudos to Matthew Settle for doing such a great job and creating an iconic character. I read and watched some interviews, where he admitted he had a big problems with grasping the role, but damn, in the end he absolutely NAILED IT.
EDIT: Part II (x)

HELLO my dear!!
look you said you would give a lecture and i am ALWAYS here for it so please!! ramble to your heart's content if you so wish!!!
3, 12, 16, 19 for that bob ask game?? 👀👀
anyways anyways, i hope you're having a good day/night/evening/any time of day that vibes!! 🥰✨
HELLO HELLO 🙃 lol i say lecture, but when I'm all set to do it my mind goes blank, you gotta say "just short answers please" and then i won't be able to shut up for days! I'll give it a shot though, soooooooooooo
3. I wouldn't say there's a single episode that wrecks me, but there are two moments that stick out. The first is when Smokey gets hit (otherwise known as The Moment My Favorite Trooper Leaves the Story), the guy that cheers everyone up and makes them laugh is shot and scared and can't feel his legs, and then Lipton is holding him...it's a lot in such a short amount of time. The other moment is when Jackson dies in the Last Patrol - between his yelling and the faces on the guys in the room (especially Ramirez, that guy knows how to Sad Face).
12. I think I was more shocked at the things that were true than the things they got wrong (like Speirs shooting the sergeant and the POWs and his run through Foy, or the saga of Alton and the Photo Album), especially since they're going off the memories of guys recalling events that happened 50-60 years before they told their story. But I'd have to say Blithe's death surprised me the most. What surprised me first was that it said he never recovered from his wounds, but he died four years later...I was like "that's a hell of an injury if he was in the hospital for four freaking years COME ON." I figured it was a typo or an overlooked error - little did I know...I was also surprised that they decided to just be like "welp, whoopsies" and leave it. And Blithe was just like

16. This one is hard to choose, everyone gets so much love on here lol. But Skinny probably. The poor guy just wants to paratroop and go home, and then people show up and turn it into a Big Thing, and then there's fighting and arguing and he's like "dude, this is just my day job" because it somehow always gets him stuck in the middle. Even getting wounded, he had to go get blood on Perconte (really inconsiderate, honestly, contain your fluids, you human blood pitcher). He deserved more screen time. And Perconte deserves a new pair of pants.
19. I want to see either Luz, Bill, or Babe pet sit my bengal cat, and not because I think they'd be good at it. Because I think it would be hilarious. He's a needy, extroverted, talkative pain in the ass (the cat, not the characters) that literally hangs from doorframes like he's straight out of the exorcist or something (seriously, I looked down the hallway, and he was nearly to the ceiling with his paws on either side of the doorway...there's nothing to hold onto on either side). One of them would probably wind up calling an actual exorcist. Oh, and he meows when he drinks. Not between sips of water, AS HE DRINKS. It sounds like a cartoon sound effect of a cat underwater (think of a meow, then add gargling and bubbles and that's what it sounds like). And one time he took a flying leap from a table straight into the garbage can, which freaked him out so he knocked it over scrambling to get out. I'm not sure what the plan was there, because I watched him aim for it and prepare to jump. I'd like to see Luz in charge when something like that happens.
Here he is when I had to evacuate for Hurricane Florence

Anyway, if you read all of them together instead of separately, it's definitely more lecture length lol. but thank you so much for the ask! I hope you have an excellent part of whatever part of the day it is for you! 🙃😁

What are 3 things you learned from writing "Sunshine Soldier" that you have carried over to "Soldier of The Stars"? Wisdom? Process? Themes that are reoccurring? 💜💜
FLORA HELLO!!! and thank you sm for the ask, i always appreciate them :))
3 things I have learned hmmmm....let me think
- I feel one of the things I carried over was the use of emotions, if that makes any sense. Emotions I feel are always viewed as a weak, vulnerable setting, and something that people have been burdened in the world to not show because then your shown as soft, in that sort of sense, someone who isn’t strong. But I have worked VERY VERY HARD to prove that emotions and being vulnerable just make you stronger - each time you show your vulnerable side that you are still strong and still very much human - it shows you’re human. In Sunshine Soldier I had started playing into emotions for a character who wasn’t scared to show her emotions to others, but with The Soldier of Stars, I really had the challenge of a quiet, closed off character who wasn’t keen on sharing emotions with others, but I still carried over the same qualities of showing that emotions showed you were still alive in a sense in the middle of the war and you were still human. I know it’s not for everyone, but for me, in writing these characters, emotions really showed they were still alive in this war, which was something I liked to mention and brief about through the entire story :)
- Something I tend to do, is focus on a singular object throughout the story which always represents something for the main character. In Sunshine Soldier, it was things that related to sunshine, the sun, sunlight, happiness, simple joys like that, what that represented to Charlotte as a character, what that meant to her as a human being with her morals, her faith, everything related in that sense. In The Soldier of Stars, it is most prominently the stars for Hazel and the symbol of a hopeless bird, which she feels like, where she’s that hopeless bird unable to reach the stars which she constantly seems to admire. Using simple objects to represent a deeper meaning seems to be something I constantly do LOL but it works for me :)
- I have stuck with the idea and themes of doing relationships where the characters (for me) have to be strong alone in their own senses, before they can be with a character. If that makes sense. With Charlotte in Sunshine Soldier, she ultimately gets together with Speirs, but for me, for that to work, the two of them had to be strong independently to work as a couple for me and in that end it worked! And it still worked out for me in The Soldier of Stars! Forcing Hazel, Catherine and Lizzie to come to certain realizations themselves, and be strong as strong female leads and a strong friendship was more important to me than the clearly evident underlying relationship they were developing. I still carried over that strong female process, in order for them to work with a BoB boy. And I think if I were to continue, I would continue that process of the female being strong, being capable of herself, before getting herself in a relationship, because for me, having the female character comfortable with herself, with who she is, knowing herself by the end of the story, completely that sort of character arc that is planned in the beginning, before the subplot relationships, is super important for me!! But I still love the side plot relationships, they are adorable, but my oc’s are always the most important and without a growth, the relationships won’t work for me.
THANK YOU FLORA! i really enjoyed this question, really making me think about these last couple months of writing and the qualities i’ve carried over, i’ve seen growth and change and many similairites which i love, thank you so so much!! <3 stay lovely :)

Band of Brothers fluff alphabet: Ronald Speirs
A = Attractive (What do they find attractive about the other?)
While Speirs appreciates many things about you physically, the thing that attracts him most to you is how you don’t seem to fear him like all the other soldiers. Unlike the band of idiots (as you lovingly call them) you don’t take rumours at face value, there is more to Speirs than a scary reputation.
B = Baby (Do they want a family? Why/Why not?)
Speirs had a not so pleasant childhood. So the whole family thing scares him a bit. The last thing he wants is for his child to grow up with someone who doesn’t know how to be a father. You understand where his hesitation comes from, it also provides you a starting point into reassuring him that he is already a better man/father than his was due to the fact that he is worrying over the wellbeing of your hypothetical children.
When baby Speirs does come along it is almost comical how frightened Ron looks as you plop the tiny human into his arms for the first time. In true Speirs fashion the two stare each other down until your newborn yawns and closes their eyes. Ron doesn’t smile much, but he smiled then (even though he denies it).
C = Cuddle (How do they cuddle?)
Ron spent most of the war alone in his own foxhole due to his reputation. He got used to sleeping alone until he joined Easy and you made it your mission to unravel the mystery that was Ronald Speirs. He would never admit to cuddling out loud…but there were times when he woke up with you cuddled into his side, and his arm may or may not have found its way around you, holding you just a bit closer.
D = Dates (What are dates with them like?)
Believe it or not, dancing. (most would believe not).
Ron is actually a wonderful dancer, and when its just the two of you, whether in your home or at a local bar he enjoys holding your close and swaying to the music.
E = Everything (You are my __ (e.g. my life, my world…))
“you are something else…” (said in response to you accepting the feared cigarette he offered you upon your first meeting)
F = Feelings (When did they know they were in love?)
Ron is nothing, if not emotionally constipated. Knowing him he probably convinced himself that the tightening in his chest when he looked at you was due to indigestion.
He knew he loved you when you found him after Grant had been shot. He was angry, and everyone had given him a wide berth after he left the drunk replacement alive, and to the MPs. You just leaned against the door frame of his room and casually offered him a cigarette. The gesture calmed something in him, the raging fury behind his eyes dying out just a little bit. Your small smile when he took the aforementioned cigarette definitely didn’t help the tightening in his chest…he also now knew that he could not blame his feelings on indigestion anymore.
G = Gentle (Are they gentle? If so, how?)
Ron is an intense guy. Most things with him are fiery and passionate. It isn’t until later in your relationship (where he feels more secure) that things become gentle, yet somehow more passionate than before.
H = Hands (How do they like to hold hands?)
Ronald Speirs does not hold hands…at least not in public, and definitely not around his men. More often then not his hand will find its way to your lower back, a gentle pressure that is all too quickly removed as he continues on his way. Most might find that infuriating but knowing Ron the way you do you know it's his way of checking in on you, and letting you know he is still there.
I = Impression (What was their first impression?)
You were one of the first to approach him other than Winters, Nixon, and Lipton, when he was reassigned to Easy company. You were genuinely friendly, a completely unexpected occurrence considering he knew the kinds of rumours that floated around about him. To further test if you were genuine he offered you a cigarette, you smiled and accepted pulling a lighter out of your pocket and offering the flame to him as well. Speirs knew then that you would be trouble.
Meanwhile, Perconte and Luz visibly froze in the background. Shooting fearful glances at each other as they watched in horror as you accepted without a moment’s hesitation. Speirs shot them a look soon after you left, it was in those few moments that both Luz and Perconte decided that this was a story that didn’t need to be shared after all.
J = Jealousy (Do they get jealous?)
Yes. Definitely yes. Will he admit to it? Hell no.
When you go out he is always touching you in some way, a hand at your back, or around your waist. It's not that he doesn’t trust you, or think that you aren’t capable of kicking ass should someone not understand the word no. It's more a reassurance to him. Ron is used to being alone, an outcast of sorts. He has a lot more insecurity than anyone (except you) may know. You can feel the way he pulls you a bit closer when other men look your way, you’ve learned to just lean into his touch and reassure him that you aren’t going anywhere.
K = Kiss (How do they kiss? Who initiated the first kiss?)
He did. The war was all but over, and in classic Easy fashion a majority of the men had been drinking steadily most of the evening, Ron included. You had taken over a shift at the medical station, so Roe would finally go get some god damned sleep. Speirs found his way in, made eye contact with you and just walked over and kissed you. You could taste the champagne on his lips, it was intense, but come to think of it most things about Ron were. When he broke away he just stared at you, gauging your reaction for a few moments. You just smiled, grabbed him by the collar and initiated another mind-blowing kiss.
L = Love (Who says ‘I love you’ first?)
You do. You were being sent back home with some of the other guys (not by your own free will mind you) the army had been grateful for your service, but the idea of having a woman in war any longer than absolutely necessary put the higher-ups on edge. Ron had been avoiding you since he found out. He could be frustratingly elusive when he wanted to be. It took you almost an entire day before you tracked him down on some stupid balcony, the look he shot you was guarded. While things with Ron had been relatively new, he had opened up enough that you knew he had been distancing himself so it would hurt less when you “inevitably left him”. What he didn’t realize was that while you were physically being shipped back home, there was no way in hell that you were ‘leaving’ him. The speech you gave him was nothing short of inspirational. It took a lot to learn how to “operate a Speirs”, but you had finally cracked the code as he visibly relaxed as you pulled him into a gentle kiss. “You know I put up with your moody crap because I love you right?” you said half-jokingly, he just smiled and pulled you closer. Perhaps whispering the words into your hair as he did so.
M = Memory (What’s their favourite memory together?)
You waiting for him at the train station as he finally arrived back home. While he thought you were always beautiful, it was something else entirely to see you out of uniform and in civilian clothes. He never truly felt like he had a home before, but having you there waiting for him with watery eyes and a big smile changed that. You were his home.
N = Nickel (Do they spoil? Do they buy the person they love everything?)
Speirs had a habit of ‘collecting’ shiny things while you were together in Europe. It's safe to say that you were only slightly exasperated when packages of silver plates and other things began arriving to your home during the months that you were separated.
O = Orange (What colour reminds them of their other half?)
White. Like the snow in Bastogne when he first met you. Even now when it snows Ron can still picture the way the soft snowflakes would find their way into your lashes and hair as ‘forced’ your way into his foxhole.
P = Pet names (What pet names do they use?)
Ronald Speirs does not do pet names…until you are married, and the words ‘Mrs. Speirs’ being lightly rasped into your neck bring about a whole new meaning.
Q = Quaint (What is their favourite non-modern thing?)
Ron likes the old-timey silver lighters. He has an old one he found over in Germany that he carries with him to this day.
R = Rainy Day (What do they like to do on a rainy day?)
Bed. He likes to stay in bed, more specifically he likes YOU in bed with him.
S = Sad (How do they cheer themselves/others up?)
Ron doesn’t do emotions. So the first time he saw you cry he had a bit of internal panic. Is it safe to touch you? Should he get you a tissue? Does he need to go hurt someone? It isn’t until you grumble to him to just ‘get over here and hold me’ that he finally starts to figure things out. Safe to say he can now pick up on your moods quite easily, and whenever possible already has you in his arms before the tears begin to fall.
T = Talking (What do they like to talk about?)
He is more of a listener. Comes from a lifetime of being a loner you guess. But he loves watching the way you light up and get animated about certain things when you talk.
U = Unencumbered (What helps them relax?)
He smokes. Which he knows he should try and quit, especially with baby Speirs around. It’s worst for him at night. You often times find your bed empty in the middle of the night, but the gentle snores (plural Daddy Speirs + baby Speirs) coming from the nursery put at ease. When you first started noticing his absences you would go looking for him. You would always find him in the nursery, the baby held gently yet securely to his chest as he softly spoke to them, sometimes there would be tiny baby coo’s in response.
V = Vaunt (What do they like to show off? What are they proud of?)
Now that you have ‘domesticated your Speirs’ he isn’t all that showy. But you’ll be damned if you ever forget how he would smile cheekily as he wandered around Germany carrying as much silver as possible.
W = Wedding (When, how, where do they propose?)
It would be small, probably a courthouse thing. He isn’t close to his family, and yours lived so far away that it didn’t make sense for them to travel so far. Regardless your family sent their blessings for you and Ron. It wasn’t some fairy tale wedding, but it suited the both of your just fine.
X = Xylophone (What’s their song?)
Maps- (covered by Freya Ridings)
Y = Yes (Do they ever think of getting married/proposing?)
Yep. Small and to the point. Ron honestly would have been okay with a big wedding if that is what you had wanted. All that really mattered to him was that you wanted to be his wife.
Z = Zebra (If they wanted a pet, what would they get?)
You get a cat. Mostly because your nosey neighbors hate them, and Ron hates your nosey neighbors.
