The monthly special at our cheap pasta takeout place is spaghetti and meatballs, which, in Japan, is rarely found and never good. Their meatballs are always so soooooft, like they're made of fish paste. I've had my heart broken before so I stick to my own meatballs. My husband couldn't resist the temptation, though.

He took one bite and grimaced.

"Soft balls?" I asked. "Told you."

"No," he said.

It was something worse. Something altogether unexpected.

Quail egg! Unauthorized quail egg in center of meatball! Of every meatball! (Which were the soft ones, by the way. They always are.)

I got my beautiful mushroom medley. It was generously portioned and delicious as always. No stowaway ingredients.

We went back and checked the menu—there was no indication or mention of quail eggs anywhere. I wonder if the other customers were happy with the unexpected bounty.

(And yeeees, this is the same place whose previous monthly specials include cold spaghetti in mayo with avocado chunks and Valentine's spaghetti with white chocolate and whipped cream. Should we know better by now? Arguably, yes, but their standard stuff is SO good. And so cheap.)

Mum prepared her five-spice braised pork bellies for our Dinner. In the same pot are also dried shiitake mushrooms and whole garlic cloves. For the vegetable, we had the garlic chives (青龙菜) stir-fry with minced pork and chopped garlic. Took half a fishcake and some steamed white rice to go with the other dishes.
