My struggle with stairs
Cerebral refers to the brain, palsy refers to the impairment or loss of motor function, therefore as we age with the condition, the impairment and loss of motor function gets bigger the more our brain cells decrease.
Since my brain cells dictate my physical movement living with cerebral palsy, there was always going to come a time when cerebral palsy was going to be more difficult to deal with. I was never going to be free of issues associated with the condition.
There are days where I struggle to coordinate me walking down the stairs. The signals coming from my brain aren’t co-ordinating with the movement of my legs. I know what I want to do. I know that I need to lift one leg in front of the other, so either the brain isn’t sending the signals, or the muscles aren’t receiving it.
As cerebral palsy affects the motor area of the brain’s outer layer (cerebral cortex) the part of the brain that directs muscle movement, it makes sense to me why I am beginning to struggle with muscle and brain co-ordination.
Because my legs don’t want to move, I have to walk at snails’ pace, I also have to be careful not to misplace my step on the stairs, resulting in my running down the stairs, or missing out the bottom stair. It’s just not the best of scenarios.
