Some of the walls with an image have wood added at the top, to the medium and tallest walls, because it would have to stretch the image from top to bottom otherwise and it would look bad.

It really hurts when friends you've had for years hurt you and then when you try to talk to them about it, they decide that you aren't worth it as a friend anymore. When they decide that they don't want to resolve things like adults. When they turn everyone against you like they never mentally left high school.

#i try not to vent on here anymore but I'm in so much pain #i thought that we were close but i didn't realize that was conditional #i should have saw the signs in how he treated other people. how he turned on a dime. how foolish i was to think he wouldn't do that to me #i will survive. i will not pick fights. i will not turn others against him using gossip. i will continue to live my life #but the stained glass mural in my heart now has a couple of shattered panels #we were supposed to be like analogs. equal and opposite. i didn't realize the extent of that truth.#i strived to grow and confront my problems but he only ever ran away from his. i wanted conversations but he only ever wanted the last word #i just wish it weren't so painful #i wish i could care less but my heart aches #i want to keep a record of this though. for myself. i can forgive but i can not forget. i can let go but this is an important lesson #vent post #tw vent #Zer0pal's pen

How to prep ACM/AlphaPanels for painting

Earlier this year, I painted a 32'x8' indoor mural for the STEAM lab at Bunker Elementary School in Muskegon, MI. The school opted to have the mural painted on AlphaPanels instead of directly on the wall, so in addition to this being my first large mural, I had to tackle the added challenge of an unfamiliar surface.

I struggled to find step-by-step information about how to prepare the surface for a mural, so if you're faced with a similar problem, I've written instructions for you based on my experience!

If you're not already familiar, an AlphaPanel is a 4'x8' sheet of aluminum composite material, a three-layer panel made of two thin layers of pre-finished aluminum bonded on either side of a polyethylene core. They're lightweight, durable, and easy to cut to size. They're also weather resistant, although my mural was indoors so that particular fact wasn't relevant.

The reasons ACM panels might be chosen for a mural over painting directly on the wall are numerous. Maybe you want to work on the mural in one location and then install it elsewhere, either a location far away from your home base or in a place (e.g. extremely high up, at a strange angle, etc.) that would make the painting process inaccessible. In my case, the school was better equipped to ensure the longevity of the panels versus having to restore the painted wall should it get damaged. As an added benefit, I was able to work on the mural in Grand Rapids instead of having to drive to Muskegon for my painting sessions.

So, based on what I learned, here are the steps to preparing ACM/AlphaPanels for painting:

Step 1: sand the panels using an orbital sander and ~220 grit sandpaper. In retrospect I could have gone a bit coarser than that, but I was playing it extra safe as I didn't want to leave any visible scratches. If you're sanding by hand instead of using an orbital sander, don't go any coarser. I tested a small corner of one panel sanding by hand and 220 grit left small scratch marks; the orbital sander did not cause this issue.

Step 2: prime the panels using universal metal primer (two coats). Be sure to ventilate your space, because the fumes from this primer are strong. Also, wear latex gloves! I learned my lesson on both of those points.

Step 3: sand again after the primer has dried. I used the same 220 grit, but see notes from Step 1 and choose your grit and sanding method accordingly.

Step 4: wipe down the panels using a damp cloth to remove dust.

And that's it! The panels are ready to paint! This prep work took me about nine hours total, split into two sessions to allow the primer to dry in between rounds of sanding. With the above preparation, the panels felt like a smooth interior wall, and I didn't run into any issues with my paint peeling or not taking to the surface.

i get rambunctious abt architecture

#the sort of secondary downtown in the town i grew up was all these really charming little brick buildings and there was a ben franklin and #a donut shop that exploded (dw abt it) and really classic signage and the unitarian church which is a really lovely romanesuqe building #from 1890. it's one of the topographically lower points in the area and what should happen a few years back but these giant towering luxury #condos coming up at the highest point in the area. its like a church r smth idk but its fucking hideous in that sort of 80s-pomo-modern #farmhouse way and there arent apartment keys you have to use an app which makes me sick. oh also the library was rebuilt in 1965 and is #this adorable little building which is decidedly midcentury inside but not in the cool way you're thinking but it's PRETTY. there's an #ornamental book on the face of it and a wrought iron gate and it's really cozy. but the wiring is janky and instead of just fixing it they #are gonna knock it down and rebuild it to be one of those hideous glass walled monstrosities that have taken over any public space. see #also how they knocked down the high school which was built in the late sixties after the original burned down and replaced it with this #torture chamber. no character at all just sterile blue furniture white walls and light gray tile. it is cold and soulless and so big it #makes me sick. its also almost entirely open concept. but it USED to be this fantastic 1970 ish brick building w brick walls and multicolor #tile and lockers and a gym with wood panelling and murals of the beatles and calvin and hobbes #anyway rant over but the world is turning to shit
