I recently delved into the idea of Usopp's character being African, as Oda suggested. While this topic can be controversial, I believe it offers a positive perspective. I'm passionate about intercultural communication, and One Piece is a great example of diverse characters learning to appreciate each other's cultural backgrounds. This is evident in the stark differences between characters like Zoro and Franky, and the initial reactions to Brooke's politeness.

Usopp's character embodies several African ideals, making his representation meaningful. Here’s how:

Storytelling Tradition: Usopp is the crew’s storyteller, a role central to many African cultures that rely on oral traditions to preserve history and teach lessons. The Straw Hats' adventures are like living history, and Usopp is the one to chronicle them. Then we gotta think back to Aesop. But we’ll save that for another day. Which also makes me think that Elbaf is meant for Usopp. Elbaf is Fable spelled backwards, we all know this, right???).

Respect for Heritage: Usopp's respect for his parents and the Going Merry reflects a deep reverence for ancestors and heritage, akin to African traditions. His belief that the Merry had a spirit and his emotional farewell to the ship mirrors African animistic beliefs, where objects and nature are considered to have spiritual essence.

Resourcefulness: Usopp's ability to create tools and weapons from limited resources showcases his ingenuity, reflecting the adaptive spirit found in many African communities.

Community and Loyalty: Usopp’s loyalty to his crew and his willingness to put others before himself align with the African value of Ubuntu, which emphasizes community and interconnectedness. Not to mention, he also didn’t want the villagers to know about the battle that’d happened between the Straw Hat Pirates and the Black Cat Pirates (back in the Syrup Village arc).

Usopp’s character is a rich tapestry of these cultural elements, making him a profound representation of African ideals in One Piece. I think if we took the time to think about the intercultural aspects found in One Piece we’d understand certain parts of the narrative better. (Might further explore this in another post).

A concept: A Percy Jackson and the Olympians X One Piece crossover featuring Percy, Annabeth and Grover (other demigods may show up), but it starts with the most unexpected character: Grover.

Grover who has not been on a quest in a while.

Grover who wakes up in a new world, on strange boat, no Percy or Annabeth in sight, a world without Nymphs and Satyrs, a world that is unrecognizable. Grover, who panics, notices that the boat has a goat figurehead and lies straight to the faces of the Straw Hats. Suddenly Grover is their Klabautermann. How else is he supposed to explain being a half-goat?

Turns out Merry (the actual Klabautermann) is still around, but only Grover can see her for now. So, they decide to work together and keep up the lie as Grover hitches a ride with this random pirate crew as he tries to find his friends. Except, he's also spent a lot of time around angsty, self-sacrificial, depressed, powerful teenagers, and well, he can't just leave them alone. He's a protector, and if he's going to pretend to be their ship, he should commit.

Fast forward to Grover, basically acting as a ship's guard/protector of the Straw Hats. After all, a little woodland magic never hurt anyone too bad.

He and Usopp get really close, and he lets the crew know about Merry existing because he doesn't want to keep them from loving her:

Grover: So, I'm not the only spirit on this ship.

Luffy: Woah! Double haunting!

Grover (absolutely bullshitting): yeah, I'm just the spirit of the trees Merry was made of; it's why my name is Grover, like a grove of trees! The spirit of your boat, the true Klabautermann, their name is Merry!

I headcanon that the only thing that changes on Luffy’s appearance is his physical appearance. She has a more feminine physique and is shorter, but everything else including her voice and hairstyle is the same. That just my headcanon though, you can picture Fem Luffy however you’d want.

Law turns back and frowns as she still sees Luffy standing there behind her, practically hovering over her and breathing down her neck.

Law knew that Luffy cared so much for you, hell she knew that Luffy had a crush on you since she made it so obvious. That’s how you were found in this state the first place, Luffy’s persistence and adoration for you made her do things that she wouldn’t do very often for anyone else. It was a good thing Luffy liked you so much and decided to walk to your house with Law tonight.

Why else would you be fainting this bad or falling immobile and unresponsive?

It was tough to tell what exactly it was but that was the highest conclusion she could draw from her rushed thought process and medical thinking.

Luffy quickly bursts back into her bedroom with an armful of water bottle, her hands dropping the extra bottle into the bed while she handed Law one of them. Law thanks her shortly after and grips the bottle cap before twisting it quickly, causing a bit of water to splash and spill out of the bottle and onto her hand and lap.

She reaches a hand out for you and presses it softly against your shoulder, your body rising and falling at a slow pace as your breathing weakened a bit more.

“Oi- Oi wake up for me. Can ya respond?” She calls out to you, her hand shaking your body just a slight bit to wake you but not too badly to the point where it’d make you feel even worse. It took a few shakes for your body to respond, and you hum out brokenly before your eyes fluttered open.

Your eyes slowly rolled down to Law golden ones and you whimper out in response as you struggled to respond or even move. Law scoots in closer to your smaller frame while she sighed out so sympathetically, her heart practically aching the more she watched you struggle and whine out.

“Drink this for me, ________-Ya…It’ll hydrate you enough for you to perk up.” She wraps her arm around your waist and pulls you up before pressing the water bottle against your pale lips, your lips leisurely prying open before you took a few weakened sips of water. Law sighs out in slight relief as she watched you drink a bit of water and Luffy lets out a heavy sigh of relief as she softly sets herself down onto the bed.

After watching you drink a bit more, Law softly rests you back down onto the bed and allowed you to fall back asleep while she stared in concern. Her hands helped fluff up the pillow just a bit to provide you with support and she scoots back before pressing her hand up against her cheek in concern.

“Is she gonna be ‘lright…?” Luffy asked worriedly, her eyes looking up at Law with disturbed eyes while Law sighs out heavily in response. Law looks down and presses a hand to her temple, her eyes softening as she stared down at the floor and then look back up to Luffy. “As long as she keeps taking in fluids she’ll be fine. M’gonna get her somethin’ with electrolytes in it though…” She finally responds, her body standing up off of the bed before she began walking over to the bedroom door.

Luffy nods and moves in closer to your slumbering frame but Law instantly grabs Luffy’s arm and pulls her away from your body which in return causes Luffy to groan out frustratingly.

“Don’t you fucking wake her up. I’m not playin’ w’you Luffy-Ya.” Law demands, pointing a tatted finger to her while Luffy nods in response. “I wasn’ goin’ to…I’ll jus’…watch ‘er and give ‘er more water.” Luffy says in a low tone, her hands pressing against her knees as she sat there beside your resting frame which seemed to be breathing steadily enough now. Law rolled her eyes and stood up before walking over to the bedroom door.

“I’m serious. Her body is too unstable for her to be doing anything that’ll make her lose her breath more quickly. You know exactly what I’m referring to.”

Luffy blinks blankly before a bit of blush begins to dust her cheek.

“But…But Torao…” Luffy pouted, giving Law a bit of an upset stare while Law pinched the bridge of her nose.

“I understand you like her and want to be with her but for right now, just avoid any type of sexual contact. We don’t need her feeling too exhausted.”

Luffy sighs out but nods in response. Her face twisted up into a saddened expression while she watched Law turn away from her.

“Don’t force her to drink and don’t wake her up. If she doesn’t want to she doesn’t have to. I’ll be back in thirty minutes.” Law says, staring at Luffy for a moment before she’d finally step out of the room and closed the door behind herself.

Luffy turned over to you and she sighs out before pressing her hand to your head, her eyes looking intently at you and studying your features before she’d press a soft smooch to your temple. She slowly pulled away and slide off of her bed before walking to her door and opening it, her head turning back for another moment before she stepped out and cracked the door just a bit.

✦ The two times we saw Shanks fought, he acted the same way (and it is the lesson he gave to Luffy, that he has always kept in mind… especially when he met Blackbeard): he won’t fight unless it is strictly necessary and someone hurts/dares to hurt his friends. At Marineford, he arrived and told them “stop or get ready to get fucked with no mercy”. But the most important one for me; featured on the VERY FIRST CHAPTER OF ONE PIECE: the fight with the mountain bandits! he didn’t do anything when they hit their head with a damn bottle. But he did something when Luffy was in trouble. Also, they KILLED SOMEONE and stated WE AREN’T GOOD PEOPLE. We actively chose to ignore that fact, cause he’s been always “luffy’s dad” and he has always acted like a sweet man. HE ISN’T A SAINT.

✦ Now, going back to the fact that Lucky put a bullet on that mountain bandit’s head. What was the premise? “Don’t point guns unless you are ready to get killed”. It’s the exact same thing that happened to Kidd in here. Shanks saw with his INCREDIBLE observation Haki what Kidd was planning to do to his fleet and HE HAD to stop him. Now, is it ok to use SUCH strong attack? Well, idk, but he is strong, and Kid should have known better (even if he had a taste of his power when someone from his crew cut his arm off before. You know… “Arrogance destroys the footholds of victory”)

✦ The giants. Same as the point above; if you are willing to hurt their friends, you should be ready to face consequences. Also, those guys come from the war island… what do you expect? They spent 100 years fighting over stupid things while on Little Garden, do you really expected them not to react if their Island was in danger by a huge cannon? Well… I’m not blaming them either for their reaction.

What I am trying to say is that their actions went perfectly well with their characters. Shanks reaction isn’t new nor weird. The giants reaction is expected.

Hopefully Kid and Killer will be ok, but, don’t get surprised (and I swear to god this isn’t a slander) if they end up not making it. The fake -and sudden- illusion of Kid becoming as important as Luffy and Law on Wano was perfectly added to create even more impact for when Shanks finishes him. This is just an opinion. It’s not that I don’t love him, I do. The thing is that I started wondering myself WHY he was THAT relevant all of a sudden? Well…

Thinking about how luffy grew up on trash mountain and the entirety of his backstory is about how poor peoples’ lives are seen as worthless as the trash around them they aren’t even considered human (and yet the celestial dragons think themselves as better than human so much so that sharing the same air is dirty) and if you weren’t born rich that it’s your own fault and how poor people are constantly under some form of extermination that their existience is a blemish that needs to be cleaned and if not then removed from sight by erasing them completely (the burning of grey terminal) or removing their identity and self expression (giving defective smile fruits to the starving citizens forcing them to always smile because it made orochi uncomfortable to look at them crying) because they consider their discomfort more important to fix than the social conditions forced upon the poor it’s like poor people exist because rich people exist because rich people are only rich by exploiting others there is no ethical way to gain that kind of status and then people are like one piece isn’t political idk if this is making sense but Oda has a lot to say about how society hates poor people

Love is a hurricane! That's why let me tell you a tale:

It started with the whales of fate that brought Luffy and Law together on an island that's hidden away from the world. Whales are cheering for their reunion!

Luffy apparently always wanted to be a centaur and is just so excited about it. From this point on I'm adding occassional extra quotes and comments to the pictures to make the tale better to read, just warning ;D

Law: What's that commotion?

Law: Now you've come and made a commotion, are you proud of yourselves, Strawhats?? Ugh, rude to accuse me of locking up the kids! But they're not entirely wrong. Even if I didn't know about the kids, I was here with them all this time and didn't help them. I hate this.

Law: And here we go with the worst case scenario. Things can never go easy for me, can they?

Luffy, you're literally killing me with your excitement to see Law.

Yes, Luffy couldn't repeat Law's name properly and came up with a nickname instead, but can we focus on something else here? For example on the fact that he actually attempted to address Law with his full name from the get-go? Luffy never does that! The amount of respect here is overwhelming. Regretfully, Traffy's name is too difficult for Luffy, and I bet he's thinking something along those lines:

Luffy: Ugh, why do you have such a difficult name?! I want to call you properly but I can't! Wait, didn't he have that fun way of addressing people? Like he added something after a name, it was kinda odd but also really cool? What was it... something short... oh well, I will just invent something similar to that! His name started with Tora, so let's just add "guy" to it, so Torao! I want to be as cool as you!

And from that day on, every new guy Luffy meets gets to be called the same way. Gizao, Yamao... if this isn't Luffy trying to mimick Law's "ya" then I don't know what this is. Law addresses everyone with "ya", so Luffy addresses now everyone with "o". They're a match made in hell, I swear. Luffy trying to be like Law is also infinitely cute and funny to me.

I'm gonna puke, it's too cute.

And so the flashback starts, replaying their previous encounters in Law's head, lol.

I think Robin would call Law tasteless as well.

Yeah what's up with Luffy being so damn excited to see you. It's almost like he's lovestruck.

Law: Fuck, it didn't work. How many more times are you gonna thank me?! And you didn't lose your smile after your brother's death... or are you actually hiding sadness under it?...

This is like the most complicated expression Law ever showed in the manga. Luffy's smile here is making him feel things, many many things. His sad conflicted expression creates such a deep contrast to Luffy's beaming smile.

I'm pretty sure Luffy is smiling so brightly here not only to show his obvious excitement, but also to communicate to Law that "I'm fine now, you don't have to worry about me!". After all Law saw him at his lowest. I don't think Luffy's truly fine and over his brother's death and I also don't think Law is actually buying it either. Grief like that doesn't go away after merely 2 years, after all.

He already knows what Luffy wants to ask him about. Communication without words again, between those two. Gross. Cute.

He already decided what he will do. That means ever since he heard about Luffy landing on the island, he knew he wouldn't go against him, but try his best to keep him away from danger instead.

Luffy: He must be so strong!!!

Luffy being so easily impressed with Law never gets boring to me. Brook observing it all with a cute smile of a parent watching their child having their first crush is also kinda super duper cute.

Yes Luffy, brag even more. God, he's so embarrassingly obvious. He likes Torao so damn much.

Luffy can also be a very awful person sometimes lol.

Law (probably): Really? Was that so important? Couldn't you wait? Or just stay like that forever or something.

They're actually both awful people sometimes.

Again, he never denies his connection to Luffy. It would be beneficial for him to do so, to come up with some excuse that would make people stop doubting him all the time, and yet he never does. Never ever. Seems someone just can't bear the thought of denying that, because it's just that important to him.

So what he does instead is saying a (poorly camouflaged) compliment towards the Strawhats lol. "You underestimate them, they're tough". I mean, thanks Law? That's kinda nice of you.

Law (thinking): Joke's on you, that's exactly what I'm gonna do. I came here just to make a mess by destroying SAD. And that's the only reason why I needed the warlord's status.

Law (thinking): We're enemies from now on, as soon as I get out of this room.

Law (thinking): I actually did, yeah. You're welcome.

Funny how he didn't even attempt to propose to Luffy to just work under him. He's going straight to the option of "You wouldn't serve others so I won't even propose that". Despite the fact that later on Law is ordering Smoker around, and Smoker is also "not the type to serve people like pirates". Luffy is getting special treatment here. Favouritism! Do you respect Luffy that much, Law?

He looks freaking happy to propose that alliance lol. Do you think it will be actually fun, Trafalgar Law?! Just moments ago you thought Luffy is making too much commotion, but now you already love the idea to see him cause even more of it. Did you already forget how much worry you felt when you first heard from Smoker that Luffy is on the island?! Do you think you can keep him out of the trouble? Where's this overconfidence even coming from? Oh right, because Luffy is staring at you like you're the best person to ever exist in the world, that's probably why.

And Luffy looks like Christmas arrived faster suddenly. And of course he does, his favourite Law is proposing him to adventure together! He wants to be friends and spend time kicking asses. Sounds like a perfect date idea for him. This is probably the first time anyone proposed something that awesome to him lol. They just share the same vibe here honestly. This will of course mark the beginning of Law's neverending suffering and worrying over Luffy.

Those two are insufferable together. And you might think I'm writing a fanfiction here, but nah, this is all canon, you just have to wear the right lens to see it. Their love doesn't have to be romantic in nature, but it's still love none the less. Luffy clearly found his most favourite person in the world in Law, and Law seems to be unusually attached to him as well. I'm getting second-hand embarrassment just looking at them here, and this is only the start lol. Also their reunion in Punk Hazard had like 4-5 pages long coverage, it felt like something out of shojo-manga instead of shonen. Oda never did anything like that before, why the extra focus, you should totally be asking that question.

Looking back on the Rising Sun

After tasting the intricately interconnected history of empires in the Middle East, visiting South Korea and Japan this year was a treat. Much like the the nations around the Mediterranean, many of the North East Asian countries such as China, Korea and Japan also a shared history. Whether this was their festivals or religious observations - there were many similarities. Especially when it came to engagement with the Western world when European powers came knocking during the Age of Discovery.

While I would still like to do a six week trip to the United Kingdom sometime in the near future, travelling to six different cities over the course of three weeks with my dear friend, bleachpanda, was still an experience in and of itself.

Most of the time I've ventured overseas, it's been with family. In fact, there have only been two instances when it hasn't been with one family member or another. The first was in 2013 when I accompanied a friend and her brother to the United Kingdom (but stayed primarily in and around London before heading to Czechia and Austria for a week). The second was my solo travel around the United States and Canada back in 2016 after being made redundant when I was selling books.

So, this third trip without family was still very special to me.

And while from date of ticket purchase to actual visit took nigh on six months, the decision to go to Japan in late February to early March was, at least in my eyes, a rather impulsive decision.

In fact, it came about when bleachpanda was browsing the internet and stumbled upon cheap ANA deals, messaging me, and then me readily agreeing to go before I plotted out our route through the cities while noting down the major sights we could see. True, there were places we didn't quite get to see - like Onomichi or heading to Kawaguchiko and Arakurayama Sengen Park to see a splendid view of Mount Fuji - but overall, I still think our trip to South Korea and Japan will remain a particular highlight for the two of us.

Perhaps because we were not tethered to family or expectations and could explore South Korea and Japan unfettered. And as the two of us had some similar hobbies, it didn't seem all too terrible to wander through a Mugiwara store or three, even as I dragged bleachpanda to the umpteenth Disney store in the city. Yes, I did get a little cranky when we stopped every fifteen minutes to spend another five to ten minutes at an accessory store in South Korea but it could have been worse.

And bleachpanda was very accommodating when it came to all the tourist sights I had us visiting, despite the occasional tiresome travel day we may have had. Or the fact I had her climbing up Namsan towards N Seoul Tower. Something she likes to remind me of every time I sing the Don Quijote song.

Would I go travelling again with a friend? Yes! Would I travel again with bleachpanda? Probably yes. She's not the worst travel companion I've had and was pretty flexible about places to see and visit.

Travelling with friends can be a delicate balancing act but if you manage to communicate well, it can become much more fun.

Of course, keeping numbers low is still probably more beneficial than being in a large group. Unless, of course, your interests all align. Elsewise, being able to split away and do your own thing once in a while would probably be best.

In any case, visiting Japan has always been a treat. After growing up on a healthy dose of anime and manga, along with video games made by Japanese developers, there's something fascinating about visiting Japan and soaking in the culture whilst physically there. It also helped that many of their aesthetics for plushies were right in my ballpark. Beyond the major cities, though, there's also something magical about the smaller towns and the countryside. Less frenetic, they give people an opportunity to breathe.

South Korea, too, was a country of contrasts with one foot in its long storied history with the Joseon dynasty and the other in a ultramodern city setting. This was particularly prevalent in Seoul where people would hawk the latest Samsung TV or phone, which stood in stark contrast to the palaces of old.

While I know many a person who has come to fall in love with South Korea through their music, television shows and skincare products, I was still quite new to the whole experience. After all, the only Korean production I've watched is Squid Game and it doesn't distill much except that capitalism is bad and people will oft times do anything to lift themselves out of poverty. Of course, the game is rigged up for the wealthy to enjoy the novelty of watching people scrambling to survive.

But while in South Korea, I managed to see beyond the image presented by the media it produced. Instead, I came to understand a little of what drove the people and their wishes for the future.

And that is something you can't always get from a tawdry drama or two.

As someone who loves to read and play video games, exploring and seeing things for myself adds to my understanding of someone's lived experience. It brings into stark reality the horrors people have endured that seeing it through a screen simply cannot capture. Reading personal stories about those in wars, listening to their testimonies, and seeing the repercussions puts these things into perspective and helps place these events firmly in reality.

We live so much of our lives online these days, it's often hard to differentiate what is real and what isn't. Heck, some people even question now if the Holocaust is real.

Like...why? How?

This is why it's important to conserve our history.

Nations rise and fall but in many places, history has been preserved. And this was abundantly clear while I was in South Korea and Japan. While the actions of nations from aeons ago can be forgiven, they should never be forgotten lest human tribalism repeat the mistakes of old.

With that said, I do hope to revisit Japan again in the future, and perhaps a few more places in South Korea. But for now, I have my heart set on a few other countries I want to tick off. Namely Europe and the United Kingdom before I turn my attention to South-East Asia.

So many places to go, so many things to do...and yet so little time to experience this great wide world we call home.
