I have to wonder if Merlin thought his love was unrequited through it all. I know he felt it, but probably assumed it was just devotion.

The first thing about devotion is that you never expect it to be returned. So, to Merlin it would’ve probably hurt less to think that all his feelings for Arthur came from the devotion he had for the ruler he hoped Arthur would become. And not from the love he had for his closest friend who followed him to Ealdor or who would get upset whenever he didn’t see Merlin for a few days.

It’s almost kinder for Merlin’s soul to have never recognized the difference between devotion and love when it came to Arthur. But I think Arthur’s passing kind of changes that because now he knows that the Albion of his dreams is probably a fantasy and yet, all he cares about is Arthur.

i ended up not having enough space for that though... also the other text is (part of) a written genome for a flea beetle! specifically the Luperomorpha xanthodera, since Bugs In a Maze and all that. Im not a genome or bug expert AT ALL though so i just picked the species kinda randomly. i wanted it to be a pink and yellow flea beetle but i couldnt find the genome for that one sadly
