Letters From Watson Liveblog - Sep. 13

The Devil's Foot, Part 2 of 3

Getting letters from Watson has really got me noticing trends in these stories I never noticed before, like how often Holmes will take Watson on a walk through nature after looking around a gruesome crime scene.

"Diabolical intrusions" is such a polite way to say the devil's involved. Speaking of, for a story titled "The Devil's Foot," neither the devil nor his feet have really been prominent. So far it makes more sense for the story to be called "The Cornish Horror."

The gruff and solitary lion-hunter "Leon Sterndale?" Might as well call him "Lionel Seriousman" while you're at it.

Anyways, he's oddly interested in the case and he's a new character, so if we're ruling out the devil then I guess Mr. Sterndale here becomes a prime suspect.

It was mentioned in the first letter that the Tregennis siblings had all sold some profitable mining ventures and retired. So I imagine that in a version of this story where the devil was actually a possibility, they had actually all made a deal with him to retire wealthy, and now he's come back to collect on the debts.

What an odd way to be sexist. "Women are so much more sensitive than men, as evidenced by the way they die faster to poisonous gas."

"I have deduced the cause of the deaths and lunacy was poisonous gas. And to test my theory I will now breathe in said poisonous gas."

And yeah, the window's open, but it's still an unnecessarily risky and dangerous thing to do.

This is lovely though. Watson breaking through the horror of the gas, something so strong that even Holmes underestimated, all because he caught a glimpse of Holmes looking like the dead victims. It's the care and the love overpowering even the most horrific of nightmares. It's great.

No shit, Holmes. But it's nice to see him understand his mistake, show gratitude to Watson, and also apologize for doing it. This moment kind of makes the "unjustifiable" nature of the experiment worth it for me.

And Watson is, as ever, the dearest partner anyone could ask for.

My dm's were flooding with people talking about what Danny commented on my recent post. Recently I've had a little crush on him but I would never admit that. We met during locked in and the amount of comments, tweets and edits about us and how we should be together was crazy.

Two days later... today is the reunion and I'm excited to see everyone again. We're not just filming a reunion tho it's a lie detector test. I got ready but didn't take ages on my outfit because Footasylum will put me in some of there clothes anyway. I left my apartment and drove to the filming location.

"y/n!" Ash shouted as I walked through the door. "hey!" I said pulling her into a hug. I said hi to everyone except Danny because he was late. They took me into a private room and gave me some black nike leggings and a matching long sleeve workout top. Once I was changed I opened the door to leave and bumped straight into Danny. "shit sorry!" he said quickly. "It's fine. Oh my god, they done you dirty with that outfit." I said looking at what he was wearing. "thats what I thought, anyway everyone's ready so we better get in there."

Everyone took their turn being strapped up and getting asked multiple questions. The last to go were me and Danny. Once I was strapped up Danny asked the first question. "starting off easy... who is your least favourite person in the house?" He said. my eyes widened "that's not starting off easy!" I sighed. "probably... Watson, just because we didn't interact much." the light turned green. "sorry" I said to Watson. "nah I totally get it." he said with a smile (he's so sweet).

"I just want to say that I did not write these questions they were asked by the fans, would you go on a date with Danny Aarons?" He asked. I stared at him in disbelief "I- I dunno, eh... yes?" the light turned green. "my boy!" George shouted. I caught Danny's smirk, I rolled my eyes while shaking my head. I was asked a few easier questions until It was Danny's turn, he got strapped up and Fu began asking him questions. He asked a few boring ones until "do you find y/n attractive?" I put my head in my hands. "yes, yes I do." he said confidently, the light went green.

Once we finish filming, we all got changed back into our normal clothes and said goodbye. As I was walking to my car I felt a tap on my shoulder… Danny. "Still free?" He asked. "yup." I said. "wanna grab some lunch?" He asked. "sure." I said nodding my head. "Great we can go in my car."

The Gilded Age, 02x05 Close Enough to Touch, my thoughts...

Omg I'm so happy for Aunt Ada! It was brilliant she didn't allow her fears to stop her marring the Reverend Forte. Their so sweet together. I understand that Aunt Agnes had to marry that man she did and as result had a horrible marriage but I'm glad the Reverend Forte pointed out to her that it was for her own selfish reasons she didn't want Ada to marry him and not because she was trying to protect Ada. I'm also glad Aunt Agnes got her head out of her butt and went to the wedding! Because no matter what she said under the grumpy exterior I want to believe she actually happy for her little sister. Now I want them to find a man for Aunt Agnes, wouldn't that be amazing to see!

Ok I completely annoyed by the whole Peggy and her boss thing. How played out, over done, so predictable and well just lazy is that?! Why can't they make her character smarter than that. Be all like oh hell no fool, you're married. Yes we had a scary fucking moment back there but no we don't need to be kissing or anything else. Because it makes Peggy's character come off as less than she is, less intelligent, less brilliant. It does such a deserves to her character!

But Bertha's staff was so not on our watch mf! I freakin love them. Especially Church making sure the Duke didn't end up with a lap full of hot soup. And Watson for catching on to what was going on in the first place! Bertha needs to give them and Mrs. Bruce a rise!

Oh I loved, loved watching Turner's plan at revenge go up in smoke. Omg Mrs. Fish comments perfectly just hitting Turner's last nerve lmfao!! God their making me truly hate her.

Bertha's dinner party gown was so beautiful. I do like seeing all the lighter colors this season and flower prints. I thought Bertha was rather cute when she kept checking to make sure everything for the dinner was perfect and all her staff kept reassuring her. I would like to see more moments like that where she's well cute. When Gladys tried to walk further down the talk, Bertha all come back here you lol. I so knew one of the main reason Bertha wanted to meet the Duke was because of Gladys. If she gets her way Gladys is going become a Duchess. It was great Bertha and George are not longer fighting omg. I didn't realize how heavy that made the show until the episode. Even with the events with Peggy unfortunately the episode still feel lighter.

Oscar and Maude Beaton are very sweet together but I don't want to see Maude get hurt. If Oscar actually loves her, perhaps like one loves a very dear friend or a best friend than maybe it's alright but if not. He definitely needs to stop acting like any kind of goldigger though! I just really want him to have honest feelings for Maude is all.

Marian if she doesn't want to be with Dashiell Montgomery ok. But her doing cringie face everytime he said something in that direction is getting old and annoying. Could she please grow the same spine for herself she seems to have for everyone else.

It's so awesome they put in about Emily Warren Roebling the first female engineer. That whole thing Larry finds out is completely ture part of history. I really appreciate the show added. It's important that our women's history finally be included.

On 4th June 1694 the Merchant Maiden Hospital was established in the Cowgate, Edinburgh.

Mary Erskine and the Company of Merchants Edinburgh co-found the Merchant Maiden Hospital to house and educate the destitute daughters of Edinburgh's merchants. 'Hospital' was a term given to an endowed charitable foundation at this time.

The Hospital (school) was initially housed in the Company of Merchants' own halls in the Cowgate. In 1696 the first girls took up residence in the Merchant Company's Cowgate building, lodging in the gallery above the Great Hall.

The Hospital moved to Bristo Street in about 1706, to a site purchased by Mary Erskine. However, by the start of the 19th Century the governers were resolved on the contruction of a new hospital. Robert Reid, Richard Crichton and a Mr Harvey supplied plans for a hospital in Lothian Street, This was never built; instead, in 1816, the new building in Lauriston was commissioned. The Merchant Maidens resided here from 1818 until 1870, when they removed (as the 'Edinburgh Educational Institution for Young Ladies') to Queen Street.

From 1870 to 1933, the premises were occupied by George Watson's Boys College.

However, the site was purchased by the Royal Infirmary for its expansion plans, and the College moved to Colinton Road. Burn's building was demolished, and the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion and Florence Nightingale Nurses' Home built in its place.

Since 1944, on the 250th anniversary of Mary Erskine’s original foundation, the school has been known as The Mary Erskine School and currently caters for some 750 pupils. It is one of the oldest all girls’ schools in the world. It’s sister school of the all-boys Stewart Melvilles share a co-ed nursery and junior school up to and including 11 year olds.

The Devil's Foot, Part 1 of 3

This suggests that Watson isn't living with Holmes at the time this story is published, which makes me curious as to why. Perhaps they just needed some space from one another. Regardless, I can appreciate that it's different from them recounting a case while sitting by the fireplace.

How many times has Holmes told Watson he can write up an interesting case they had before changing his mind? It must have been at least a few times if Watson is rushing to get his notes and publish the story.

Dr. Agar is interesting: a doctor who is not Watson, who Holmes trusts to diagnose him and tell him to stop working. Whatever "dramatic introduction" they had, I would assume involved aiding Holmes. Maybe he saved his life.

While this line could simply mean Holmes becoming too sick and debilitated to work, the use of "disqualified" makes me imagine Holmes with a detective license of some sort that Dr. Agar can just, revoke. I wouldn't know if that's the case, so it's probably just a fancy way of saying the first thing.

Oh, poor Watson. You just wanted a nice, grim little cottage fantasy away from any crimes or cases, but what you fail to realize is that any detective story where they go on vacation is always going to include a case of some kind. If anything, you set the precedent.

Watson is too much of a gentleman. I know deep down he wanted to tell the vicar off and to push him out the door the moment the words "extraordinary," "tragic", and "affair" left his lips.

I remember reading this when I first read all the Sherlock Holmes stories years ago and imagining a scene which was much scarier than any art I could find of it. I also remember enjoying the venture into something more horrific for Holmes.

The Devil's Foot pt 1

Gonna go ahead and assume that no actual devil's make an appearance in this one. So... maybe a location? Maybe a statue or artwork of some kind?

We shall find out.

Oh, its in Cornwall. I feel like it's going to be a geographical location, then. There are loads of places called stuff like that in the more rural parts of the British Isles.

It was, then, with considerable surprise that I received a telegram from Homes last Tuesday—he has never been known to write where a telegram would serve—in the following terms: Why not tell them of the Cornish horror—strangest case I have handled.

This is a personal request from Holmes himself? But Holmes, you know he's not going to write it how you want him to write it. You know you're going to complain he sensationalised it too much. He's going to focus on the narrative rather than the technique.

In March of that year Dr. Moore Agar, of Harley Street, whose dramatic introduction to Holmes I may some day recount...

I bet he pretended to be a corpse and then jump-scared the poor bastard.

The ancient Cornish language had also arrested his attention...

Sometimes I feel Sherlock Holmes in my soul. Yes. Linguistic studies and evolution of language. I'm pretty sure he's wrong about its evolution, because it's in the same language family as Welsh and Breton, but this is exactly what I would do if I were sent to Cornwall. Walk around admiring the history and study the language.

He was a middle-aged man, portly and affable, with a considerable fund of local lore. [...] also, Mr. Mortimer Tregennis, an independent gentleman [...] taking rooms in his large, straggling house. The vicar, being a bachelor, was glad to come to such an arrangement, though he had little in common with his lodger, who was a thin, dark, spectacled man, with a stoop which gave the impression of actual, physical deformity.

We go from a pleasant and surprisingly unhorny description of a person to a 'really Watson?' description again. And that's not even mentioning the "lodger? lodger. and in conclusion, lodger." of it all.

"We can only regard it as a special Providence that you should chance to be here at the time, for in all England you are the one man we need.” I glared at the intrusive vicar with no very friendly eyes

Watson is on guard dog duty. Don't you dare interfere with Holmes' recovery.

I glanced at the hastily clad clergyman, with the formally dressed lodger seated beside him, and was amused at the surprise which Holmes's simple deduction had brought to their faces.

Watson trying to pretend he's always been able to work out Holmes' deductions and never been surprised a day in his life.

"This morning, being an early riser, he walked in that direction before breakfast and was overtaken by the carriage of Dr. Richards, who explained that he had just been sent for on a most urgent call to Tredannick Wartha."

Oh no! Poisoning? Was it poisoning? I don't know why my mind went to poisoning. Something about a doctor being called rather than the police, but then if someone had been stabbed and wasn't dead yet, you'd call a doctor too, so... My mind is just jumping to conclusions.

Who is it? Who's dead. Owen, George, or Brenda?

"His two brothers and his sister were seated round the table exactly as he had left them, the cards still spread in front of them and the candles burned down to their sockets. The sister lay back stone-dead in her chair, while the two brothers sat on each side of her laughing, shouting, and singing, the senses stricken clean out of them."

Alas, poor Brenda.

Is the poison in the candles? Or on the cards? Or in the drinks.

Poor Mortimer, though. And you're being so rude about him, Watson. Guy's just been through a hugely traumatic event. Although, I suppose by the time you're writing this it's been 13 years and he knows what happened, but still. Have some compassion for the poor man.

Is foot a card term? I don't play much cards. Not a geographical feature then.

"I take it you were divided in some way from your family, since they lived together and you had rooms apart?”

I mean, the mind immediately jumps to it being because he's gay and living with a man, but I know this story will not go there. So... money, perhaps?

"We were a family of tin-miners at Redruth, but we sold our venture to a company, and so retired with enough to keep us. I won't deny that there was some feeling about the division of the money and it stood between us for a time, but it was all forgiven and forgotten, and we were the best of friends together.”

Yep, money. And were you really the best of friends together? Were you?

“As we sat at the table my back was to the window, and my brother George, he being my partner at cards, was facing it. I saw him once look hard over my shoulder, so I turned round and looked also."

I have the strangest recollection of this scene. I think I must be remembering the Granada version of it.

Then we turned our steps towards this ill-omened house in which they had met their strange fate.

OK, this is very creepy so far. The fact they were all sitting exactly where he left them (according to him) the sudden madness, the death. Very creepy. Looking forward to what happens next.
