At first, we thought it was funny. Whenever she had a mood swing, we would giggle and whisper, “Menopause!” to each other. But as time passed, she kept getting triggered by the smallest occurrences. Her temper flared high for every small perceived offence, and eventually, it seemed she was always on the verge of an outburst.
It seems our patience eroded as time wore it down, in increments that no one noticed at once, yet it was all too obvious when we stopped to think about it. Since when did all our conversations with her devolve into arguments? While it was hard to think of a time we didn’t hear her yelling like a banshee, it is obvious that fussing like a hen over everything wasn’t part of it until a few years back.
It’s sad to see a beautiful bond between our mom and us (her daughters) deteriorating, despite all the sacrifices she made—still makes—for us.
But it’s hard—so hard—to keep a calm and loving attitude when all she does is snap, shout, and argue. It’s hard not to be irate in the face of constant belittling and accusations, when we know no one is intentionally skipping chores or ignoring her advice to drive her away. In fact, the hurt of being accused of trying to drive her to an early grave just for a forgotten dirty dish weighs more on our minds than the extra portion of food she serves out of all the love and goodness of her heart.
But in the end, we try. And we’ll keep trying. For there wasn’t much kindness offered to her, and she, in turn, offers kindness and love in the only way she learned. She knows to avoid the pitfalls of her parents, and she deems it good enough treatment for her children.
And maybe it is.
After all, we know how to be kinder. To be calmer. To express love through both words and actions. To point out someone’s mistakes, faults, and flaws without a venomous tirade attached to it. To offer positive reinforcement instead of punishment.
We know better.

But, be wise to not mistake this change of mind as passive. For she is as beautiful as she is volatile, sailors of all stripes being cautioned to offer tribute to the sea for the promise of a safe voyage.

Ranni has every reason to hate Marika. She is the figurehead of an order that has caused her and her family so much misery… and yet, in the Age of the Stars ending cutscene, Ranni holds Marika’s head with such gentleness. It feels less like Ranni is putting down a tyrant, and more like she’s laying her to rest, after many long years of torment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ranni could have been Marika’s successor, but she rejected the guidance of the Two Fingers, slaying her own flesh in order to be rid of their influence:
“But I would not acquiesce to the Two Fingers. I stole the Rune of Death, slew mine own Empyrean flesh, casting it away. I would not be controlled by that thing.”
Ranni goes to such drastic lengths because the most intolerable thing possible to her is to be a pawn; her will not being her own, but being at the mercy of a higher power. Ranni’s quest is above all about free will – it culminates with Ranni using the Fingerslayer Blade to tear her Two Fingers into bloody ribbons, at long last giving her full control over her own destiny.
Tumblr media
Marika in the present day is a prisoner held in perpetual torment. According to Enia and the Two Fingers,
"Queen Marika is the vessel of the Elden Ring, carrier of its vision. A god, in truth. But after the Elden Ring's shattering, she was imprisoned in the Erdtree. A grim punishment for shattering the Order, despite her godhood. The Fingers speak... "Marika's trespass demanded a heavy sentence. But even in shackles, she remains a god, and the vision's vessel.”
Marika shattered the Order, going against the will of the Two Fingers, and was punished for it gravely. In many ways, Marika’s fate is Ranni’s absolute worst nightmare. This is exactly the fate she took such drastic lengths to escape… serving a higher power with her entire being, her will not her own, but the will of the Fingers, with any attempt at change met with violent suppression, her body essentially being used as a puppet to defend the last vestiges of the Order.
“I would not be controlled by that thing.”
Tumblr media
I think that Ranni, seeing Marika’s broken body at the end of it all, felt nothing but pity for her in that moment, despite everything she’d done. To me, the act of Ranni holding Marika’s head in her hands feels like she’s saying, “you were my enemy. But there is no worse fate in this world than what you suffered. Now, you can be truly free."

Something about the inherent Lest/Maddie parallel that exists in Arcane S2—each of them the honeypot relaying the pillow talk of the clueless aristocrat they're sleeping with back to who they're really loyal to—and the way it reflects how Mel learned more from her mother than she likes admitting to herself (or than Ambessa ever gave her credit for until the very end) because, on the surface, they both use the same tactic to keep an eye on their potential rival.
And yet! Mel's compassionate treatment of Lest (a trans woman sex worker who she considers a genuine friend, is protective of and willing to accept criticism from, and who she refuses to consider expendable) contrasted to Ambessa's contingency plan with Maddie (a radicalized fascist who she converted into an asset by convincing her she was a more effective leader than Caitlyn and who was, in the end, eminently expendable) is one of the starkest illustrations of just how different Mel is, and how much better a leader of the Medarda clan she's going to be.

When Johanna has to leave her parents and she becomes a scared kid all over again, Hilda thinks her mum chooses to stay over her. When Hilda says ‘this is a dream, and they’re only memories’ it’s because Johanna isn’t a kid anymore, she can’t make new memories with her parents, not in the way they want to, because life isn’t the same in Fairy Country. To stay in Fairy Country is to stay in the past. To stay in the past is to abandon the present, and to abandon the present is to abandon the future. You can’t live when nothing ever changes, our living is marked not by the passage of time, but by the change we go through. Change is different, and it can be sad, but it can also be good. If you were to live in a world of stasis, you would only be existing, and Hilda and her mum were meant for living. Despite the comfort of Johanna’s past, she can’t stay in it. Hilda doesn’t want to stay in it. She doesn’t want either of them to stay in it. Johanna has to choose between her past and her future (and with it her daughter’s future). Her parents left the life they built FOR JOHANNA, and Johanna leaves the life she lost FOR HILDA. She chooses what’s best, even if it hurts her, even when the child she was is begging her not to, because that’s what parents do. They choose their kids. They choose their kids every time. Don’t you see?? There is so much love.

"You weakened me!" By Ambessa is not a declaration of apathy! It is not her blaming Mel! It is when Mel finally learns that her mother isn't apathetic to her, that she isn't disinterested in her fate or disappointing in her, but instead she loved her too much and too deeply. That Mel threatened Ambessa with ruination, because the only way Ambessa has ever known to survive is by embracing brutality and sacrificing a peaceful death, while all Mel has ever wanted is peace. That a peaceful death would have literally meant the death of her child, back when she was still pregnant with one of them!
And Mel's disapproval of her meant that Ambessa could feel herself tumbling into a path of peace. Into a better path, maybe, but a path that for Ambessa has only ever meant death. If she could be more hardhearted, maybe she could have kept both - her family's survival, and her daughter - but alas. Her sending Mel away is not a failure on Mel's part, but in fact a failure on Ambessa's - because she could not withstand the arrows of her disapproval, now she needs to come to Piltover to collect her before whatever older enemies she has catch up with them both. She comes to Piltover to correct that mistake, to show Mel a harder heart, and yet! It's doeesn't work! Because Mel still demands of her vulnerability and she cannot help giving it to her!
Is there no greater expression of love, for her? To even contemplate opening herself up to that which is deadly, for the sake of the life and soul of her daughter? Is there nothing so undoing?

One of my favorite past times is rambling to my mother about some fandom nonsense or another, talking all over the place and out of order and taking forever and a day to get to the point, all while she sits there with a disgruntled, put upon expression of pain and suffering because she cannot escape me.
I am her daughter. And she must unwillingly listen.
