Fushiruha Propaganda

If you follow me, or you've seen me in the Kagurabachi tag, you might be wondering why it is exactly I'm so incredibly obsessed with this rarepair. Well... I'm not very good at organising my thoughts because I'm cursed with Airheadedness but here is my (possibly futile) attempt to DRAG YOU ON BOARD THIS SHIP!

What's up with the ship name?

Let's get this out of the way first. I'm calling it Fushiruha because it rolls off the tongue nicely; this is the ship name I use to be non-specific about the top/bottom positions. I'm just referring to them as being together generally.

You might also see FushiUru used, and the Japanese tag is 伏漆. Previously the ship was known as BanUru (バン漆) and you will also see it called Yogurt.

Okay! With that out of the way I shall talk about all the reasons as to why you should ship Uruha and Fushimi!

They look good together!

What do you mean that's not a reason? Of course it is.

And they do look good together! See:

Let's see, we've got:

Light hair x dark hair. Always some of the best kinds of contrast.

Sharp silhouette x flowy silhouette. More contrast, which makes the two of them together very visually appealing.

Dark clothes x light clothes. In addition to the hair, makes for very nice contrast.

They're both hot. This is undisputed.

Long range x short range. You might have to just trust me on this one. I like to believe that that's an archer's chest guard Fushimi wears; combine that with Uruha's katana, and we have more wonderful contrast... or they complement each other!

Moving onto something of substance.

Devotion

Fushimi was 11 years old when the Seitei War was fought. We got that information along with his name. I don't think that it's too much of a leap to assume he may have looked up to somebody like Uruha. With that in mind, this is how he reacts to Uruha - someone he could have admired - breaking down in front of him. He reassures him of how hard he fought and he swears to protect him.

It's a dynamic I really enjoy; the bodyguard and the one they're sworn to protect. And Fushimi takes his duty seriously. He's perfectly willing to die even if it means he can buy Uruha some time. That's it. All he wants to do is give him the best chance of escape.

Look at the screenshot I posted to prove they look good together. Fushimi doesn't believe that they have a chance of defeating the Hishaku, but that doesn't matter. The only thing that matters to him is Uruha.

He's willing to give his life for him. That's romance!

Familiarity

It's clear that Uruha spent a lot of time with his men and even though Fushimi said that they didn't have a chance, he believed in them.

I'm also going to unashamedly link to Hest's post about Fushiruha, namely to mention that Fushimi refers to Uruha with a pronoun which indicates that they're super close. And how could they not be!? Three years spending every day together, of course they're close.

(Side note, just go and read Hest's whole post, okay? It's better than mine).

After the Kokugoku Steam Squad defeat the Hishaku (or, think that they defeat them), Fushimi suggests they give Uruha a warm welcome. Now I'm not openly bananas enough to believe that Hokazono was indicating that Fushimi's gonna go and fuck the daylights out of Uruha, but he wants to go and surprise Uruha. To me it indicates that they are indeed close with one another.

Motivation

Uruha was ready to die. He says this in his introductory chapter, when he's having his daily naked-bath-with-bodyguard.

Then Samura comes along and he's going to kill him, and Uruha understands his reasoning for it. Yet he doesn't want to die because of what Fushimi and the others sacrificed for him. Fushimi's sacrifice was largely what motivated him to fight Samura, because he couldn't throw his life away after what they did.

And also... this may be wishful thinking on my part, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility - Fushimi's closeness with him, his clear bond with the squad - that after he was devasted to learn the news of Kunishige's death, it was Fushimi who helped him keep on going through those three years. Fushimi gave him a reason to live, even when he died.

A Kagurabillion Flashbacks

The Kokugoku Steam Squad died in chapter 48. Uruha flashed back to them, or to Fushimi... several times. He flashed back to them before they died, as a matter of fact - Uruha fled the fortress in chapter 47, so shall we tally up how many times he thought about him?

There were 2 flashbacks before the steam squad died. Then a further 8 flashbacks after they died, including right before Uruha died. And one of those times was flashing back to when they were in the hot spring together. You can't expect me not to take something from that.

One of his final thoughts was of Fushimi.

Various Fun Tropes

Okay I'm losing my train of thought. Here's some miscellaneous things about them that I enjoy.

They're doomed!! One of the most fun tropes there is. They fall in love but Fushimi is fated to sacrifice himself for Uruha, only for it to be in vain. This one's extra fun if you think about how Fushimi may have looked up to Uruha as a hero; he was one of the children that Uruha fought the war for, only for him to die in the end.

Age gap!! Fushimi is 29 in canon. We don't know Uruha's age, but given that - based on the flashback of him with Kunishige - he was a teenager at the youngest during the war (18, let's say, likely at the youngest, though he could have been a little younger) he's probably in his mid-thirties. Very fun to pair a jaded war veteren with a younger, energetic man who has only really known peactime.

Knight/prince dynamic! C'mon, this goes perfectly alongside bodyguard/protected. Fushimi is there to serve Uruha. Even more fun if you take Uruha's silly, childish nature and interpret him as being bratty or spoiled.

GRIEF!! I cannot talk about this enough. Uruha being lost in grief and Fushimi being the one to pull him out of it. Please.

Now, the most important reason...

BECAUSE I LIKE IT.

another interesting part of billford to me is the veil of truth and lies. i feel like ford is very vitriolic towards bill not only because of the betrayal and the portal, but also the idea that none of their bond was ever “real”. of course, book of bill shows us that bill really did see himself in ford, and they struck a companionship that i don’t think bill has ever managed to achieve with anyone else, but bill ALSO has a habit of denying all of that sappy sentimentality! the last pages of TBOB are him shrieking at the reader that he “doesn’t miss ANYONE” and how he’ll be back.

so i can only imagine for ford, bill’s taunting must have sounded a lot like “i was lying about EVERYTHING, liking you included”. and of course, bill could never correct that mistake, because that would mean admitting vulnerability.

I don’t like altean broadsword Lance. i already disliked red paladin Lance. the broadsword was like rubbing salt in the wound. why couldn’t he have his own niche. why was his character development just making him keith. i understand that it was like “he accepts that he doesn’t have to be a leader and excels as a co-leader and you can find happiness that way yada yada yada”. but you could’ve done that without making him keith. also now give him something unique, cool, that falls in line with his sniper bit. i’m not saying just give him another gun, im saying give him something quiet and lethal. like a garotte. yeah i want garotte lance.

they're staying at mary's aunt's house in the quaint countryside and pandora hasn't eaten in days; she's ravenous, she's delirious, she's scared; terrified that she's going to hurt mary, that she's going to wake up and see the pretty girl curled up to her chest, smell her blood, and feel her heart, and sink her canines into it, she's so scared, so weak she sleeps all day, and another day passes, and another, and everything mary gives her she eats, and then throws up. mary seen pandora lose control, seen her attack strays in the forbidden forest and it gets so hard, it gets so, so hard, she thought she saw the worst of it when she saw pandora's hand in a slashed open baby deer, saw the eyes of a predator in the girl she loved and threw up and made pandora swear she'd never do it again - she wasn't sure what she meant by 'it', she's smart, she knows pandora needs it, needs to eat, she knows that when she's asleep pandora slips from their bed and eats and eats and eats and wipes her mouth and comes back and kisses mary with it the next morning but she's. alright with it.

but this time it's different - pandora doesn't sneak out and mary, sweet, stupid girl she think it'll be okay, that she's figured something out till pandora retching in the toilet because she bit off her own finger.

mary's scared, so scared, so pale and shaken and standing in the corner of a horror movie she feels she's directed, and she breaks down and tells pandora to eat, to live, to do whatever it takes because she'd rather an animal die than the love of her life, she goes to bed and she calms herself, tells herself it's okay and pandora will live and that next time, she won't let pandora starve herself for nine days.

it's all okay and quiet and sweet till she wakes up to bloody sheets and her aunt crying downstairs. she asks what's wrong and her aunt, sweet aunt hannah, is crying because their helpless, blind, old neighbour's dog was ravaged by some wolf and she fell down the stairs of her home and no one, no one knew. she's fine, aunt hannah assures mary she's fine but mary knows she isn't, she knows that even if she is she herself isn't she goes back upstairs and pandora's there and pandora's so clueless, so tame, so content it makes her angrier and sadder and breaks her heart and soul and before she can think she hits her and pandora's so upset because she only did what mary said. mary said she could eat whatever and she still only ate the dog, not the woman inside, not a human, not mary's aunt nor cousins and mary's angry angry angry and hits her and throws her out and pandora sits behind the house where she knows mary can see through their - her - window, sits there for days and doesn't move, doesn't eat, doesn't talk, doesn't cry even though she's so, so confused and so, so hungry. it's only two weeks, she tells herself, then they'll be out of here and back to their apartment where mary can get that nauseating raw chicken from the market that pandora will eat anyway, it's just two weeks and she's dizzy by the second, just twelve more days, she thinks, but by the fourth she's lost another finger and by the time she crawls back to their apartment behind mary she's lost an arm, she's hungry and she's upset and she's sick and mary watches and watches and watches her, still as pandora trails her own blood into the apartment, onto the carpet they both picked out.

By popular demand (three people) I’ve transcribed the first page of my essay

This will be posted scene by scene

So without further ado, this is the first part of

Silco, an analysis

We are initially introduced to Silco as shaded figure, the only thing to go off being voice and side profile. He is immediately shown to be a mysterious figure, a looming, threatening presence. The first we actually see of him is his eye when he finally turns to the viewer, the glowing orange orb originally intentionally hidden from view, eclipsed by the other half of his face.

He is here implied to know Vander, though not favourably, if his reaction is anything to go off “Vander’s in trouble..” sounding more scheming than anything else.

We then, at last, get a look at Silco when he stands. He carries himself in a way unlike any Zaunite we’ve seen thus far. He feels almost out of place, and he likely would look it if not for the haphazardly patched up suit he sports.

As he walks forwards, we get a good look at his scarred left half, emphasised by the camera panning to focus on it, showing his left side profile only, so the viewer can get a good look at the intricacies of his eye, and the extent of his scarring. This furthers the unnerving nature of him, the off putting aura he exudes making him appear, in a sense, nonhuman. He seems to have a permanent composure, though if you look closely enough you can see the cracks. When he sees the test of their current strain of shimmer, we see his good eye widen a fraction, eyes darting around, taking in what had happened, shock visible on his face if you look well enough, before the mask of cool composure is slipped back into place when Singed talks to him, pulling him out of his shocked trance and reminding himself of the current situation
