hiya papaya! my partner and i love your youtube videos, and we recently started a book review podcast focusing on books with queer themes. i wanted to ask if you had any lesser known queer ya book reccs, cuz i'd love to hear about them of so! also, i would love to cover your book at some point and perhaps talk with you about it, but that's future things cuz i don't want to fully ask that when we're only one episode in ourselves. thanks for making such awesome videos!~
I'm a huge huge huge podcast nerd so I may check out yours and would totally love to be on it! I really do despite all appearences spend most of my time gaming while listening to podcasts. Most of those podcasts are old episodes of mbmbam but look, we don't choose our autism.
I so don't do enough reading of NOT bad books in truth. Reading is hard and I take my occasional bad book breaks to read... like random stuff rather than specifically lgbt ya. But digging through my review archives and memory:
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention The Butterfly Assassin series by Finn Longman, which is foremost a spy assassin story set in a closed city but also has (and goes into more later) an aro ace lead character! And a very keen specific focus on close platonic bonds!! Stuff like that always gets passed over talking queer lit because it's not that bombastic I think to go 'there's good friendship here' but honestly so important to me to see books on purpose intentionally highlight platonic bonds as just as important as romantic or sexual. Anyway, great books. Caveat I know the author a bit but like, I am too autistic to hype up a friend's book that I DIDN'T genuinely love.
The aro/ace database is a key friend and work of art.
I think Angels Before Man is very widely known but a very interesting queer angel book!
Valhalla trilogy by Ari Bach is a very fun far future sci fi action fest with norse mythology parallels and dangerous lesbian valkyries
Archangel Protocol series, Lyda Morehouse isn't YA I think. Maybe. The fourth book could be, that one has a teen lead. Anyway, look!!! My fav angel weird sci fi universal unitarian religious 90s cyberpunk series...
I don't think my reccs help much at all here but there you go! I KNOW a lot of indie lgbt books. I just haven't actually read them.... yet......

people who don't normally read sci fi have such bad taste in sci fi 😭
#which makes sense because they're there despite having no attraction to what makes sci fi sci fi#but it's funny because they're always so excited to give their recommendation#and it's always like. ready player one or bobiverse or the locked tomb or something else horrendously tacky#like it's either awful marvel style quipping or something painfully twee that thinks it's deeper than it is a la Becky Chambers#and you have to try to be nice while they rave about some of the worst writing a mainstream publisher has put out#that only counts as “sci fi” bc it's in space or whatever#the other option is they like some military shit linked to a video game about how some genocide is necessary#don't get me wrong I read mostly bad sci fi and I'm aware good sci fi is rare#but it's like you had taco bell exactly once and someone's like 'any good Mexican restaurant recs in this town?'#and you just HAVE to respond with how good your dorito taco was and it's the best Mexican food#and in this scenario you don't even know enough to say “hear me out” you don't know other restaurants even exist like it's never occurred#to you to look and after that one dorito Taco you never had any interest in having Mexican food ever again#and yet. if someone is talking about Mexican food you just have to bring up you ate a Dorito taco one time and everyone should have one#how it's the best Mexican food in the world#also tumblr stop saying books are good just cuz there are lgbt people in them challenge#one time i asked for ppls fav sci fi nobody's heard of and fully half the replies were Becky fucking Chambers btw

I'm gonna be brave and do a (local but virtual) book club this weekend!! And I reread the book for it last night when I was in too much pain to sleep and I picked up on something that I missed the first time around and that no one I've talked to about this (fairly popular) book has mentioned. So I might even have something to add to the conversation!!

Fat lesbian vampire story is free!
Secrets at the Door is free on all the retailers until the end of the month.
Tumblr media
The secrets aren't at the door. They're already in the house.
Betsy’s reluctance to lead the Merryweather coven puts her entire family in danger, and with an injured vampire showing up on their doorstep and a bloodborn harvest to resurrect, they can’t afford mistakes.
When the coven is targeted on neighbouring Castle land, the only reliable witness is a young girl found hiding in the family mausoleum. But Lotus is not what she seems.
The girl is a secret keeper with a bind on her tongue. And when one of the Merryweathers finds Lotus unconscious in the woods, Betsy helps her unravel her tongue, slowly learning the terrible truth of what her coven has been harbouring for years.
This book features a fat, beekeeping lesbian vampire, a queer well-demon in need of a haircut, vampires who make very bad decisions, and a case of stone-cold revenge. There are romantic elements (f/f & m/nonbinary).

The relief I feel being free from working at Gaslight City is unparalleled, but I miss some of the clients so fucking bad. Specifically there was these two dudes I just loved. One of them was a felon, ex-bank robber, just the nicest dude I've ever met. A lil dumb sometimes but heart of fucking gold. And the other guy is so gd sweet too. His big "crime" that made him homeless was being just too autistic to function in society, which just pissed me off so much. He loved plants and we would infodump about them together. And they were best friends who watched each other's backs viciously.
Anyway working with the homeless is so amazing and you really do meet the best people. There's not a client I don't miss, really, even the ones who drove me nuts.
