just that nostalgic warm vibe of "we used to know each other and now we're rekindling something" gets me every time like "why dwell on what could’ve been when we can have something now" HITS ME IN MY HEART

especially when both characters have developed and matured separately and gone through stuff and come out the other end a better person and there's just this catharsis of "it was the wrong time for us back then but now it’s the right time" DO YOU HEAR ME SOBBING

or you could even go the complete opposite with a "you made me a better person and without you I lost myself" angle and the whole arc is one or both characters earning forgiveness and making up for lost time in a mature and earnest way OUGH

I love character and relationship growth that takes time and honest effort from both characters it is truly the trope ever <3

Hey bestie any zutara fic recs. I feel like I’ve read all the classics.

Hello anon! Oh boy have you come to the right place because I have read several million words of these two dorks falling in love and though I plan to read several million more, I am always down to screech about talented fanfic writers!!! Here are most of my faves, some of which you’ve probably read but my enthusiasm simply needs an outlet. No WIPs to minimize heartbreak.

In the spirit of not recommending too many classics, I’m not including anything from the first page of the Katara/Zuko tag on AO3 sorted by kudos, with one exception. Same rule does not apply to FF.net because nobody visits that site anymore, yet we mustn’t forget our roots!!!

Long fics / series: 

Half Asleep, by crushinator | Rating: T | Word Count: 82,335

Summary: Five years after the Hundred-Year War, Fire Lord Zuko is hit with an assassin's dart, and falls into a coma from which he cannot wake. A week passes, and his prognosis is grim. But Katara could swear she hears him in her dreams.

My thoughts: this fic, in many ways, is novel quality. The pacing? Immaculate. The action scenes? Exciting and interesting yet super easy to visualize. The characterization? On point. Katara is peak Miyazaki heroine in this, setting out on a quest to the Spirit World to save her boy (who’s not really her boy) from whichever Eldritch horror has him in its clutches. I love the little glimpses we have of the mutual pining between Katara and Zuko, and there are no words to describe how much I love the resolution of Katara and Aang’s relationship in this story. And oh boy, is the climax of the fic super romantic. This is just a really well written, emotionally compelling, tight fic. Deserves to be a fandom classic. 

Southern Lights, by colourwhirled | Rating: M | Word Count: 769,274

Summary: A world where the Avatar has disappeared from memory. Where Sozin’s Conquest was successful. Where the unsteady order of the empire is threatened as members of the royal family are picked off one by one and lines are slowly drawn in the sand One last chance for peace forces an unlikely alliance between a homesick waterbender, a carefree Air Nomad, a runaway Earth Kingdom heiress, and the fire lord's inscrutable son. Together they must learn to shed old enmities and become the balance they seek to restore to the world.

My thoughts: Is it a Bildungsroman? Is it a war story? Is it a politics story? Is it a love story? Is it a friendship story? Is it a story about colonial violence and well-meaning complicity and finding justice in a world where it simply doesn’t seem to exist? Yes to all of the above, because at 700k+ words YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL. You know how Virginia Woolf once said that Middlemarch is one of the few novels written for grownups? Well, Southern Lights feels adult, not because of violence or sex or general grimness (looking at you, HBO), but because it’s fundamentally about having the courage to make choices, live with the consequences, and make more choices, and repeat that over and over again. If Katara is a Miyazaki heroine in Half Asleep, she is full on Daenarys (pre-character assassination) in Southern Lights, a heroine who gets put through her paces yet retains her unwavering resilience to find her place in the world. Katara can be pretty frustrating in this and I know a lot of the commenters on this fic wanted to smack her up the head halfway through, but I support women’s rights and women’s wrongs and her decisions make sense to me even when I also want to smack her for them, and isn’t that a symptom of good writing? I count my lucky stars that I joined the ATLA fandom after this fic is finished (which was only last year!) because I got to binge it in a few days and I have not been the same person since. Deserves classic status. 

Refraction, by caroe3725 | Rating: E | Word Count: 215,249

Summary: Making choices after the war was supposed to be the easy part. Her future decided and neatly packaged based on what everyone else wanted for her, what she should want, too. But Katara’s destiny had a funny way of being exactly what she wanted to run from. (As if anyone needed another Zutara post-finale slow burn after 15 years.)

My thoughts: YES WE DEFINITELY NEEDED ANOTHER POST-WAR ZK SLOWBURN OF SUCH IMMACULATE QUALITY. Both Katara and Zuko’s internal monologues are excellent in this, but I particularly love Zuko’s. The writer is so good at capturing his resolve, his earnestness, and his awkwardness. This is a very restrained fic — no great histrionics — but also incredibly romantic. The first kiss scene made me want to both sigh and screech. I’m also just a huge sucker for “Katara learns politics” which this fic has in spades, with a bonus of very thoughtful gender dynamics. Anyway, if you liked AJ Lenoire’s The Summit or andromeda13’s such selfish prayers, you’d probably like Refraction. Zuko and Katara are very much dumb teens in the beginning portions of this fic, which I personally like because it makes me nostalgic. Oh, and Katara is low key chaotic good in this, which is super in-character and hilarious.

Stormbenders, by Fandomme | Rating: T | Word Count: 171,000+ 

Summary: S3 AU from FBM. Deep in the Fire Nation jungle, the Gaang meets a group of rogue water ninja who send Zuko and Katara on a mission to retrieve Ozai's secret battle plans.

My thoughts: I’m aware that if you asked the average ZK shipper ten years ago what the ship classics are, the answers are probably Stormbenders, His Majesty Prefers Blue, and the Sparrowkeet series. The other classics are good (classics for a reason!), but Stormbenders remains my favourite. It’s funny. It’s exciting. It’s WELL PACED. The ZK relationship grows so organically, which is a huge feat considering this fic was started before we even got The Southern Raiders. The events are a little more adult than the show, but the tone remains very ATLA. There’s a lovely little animatic of the beginning of the scene on YouTube to show you exactly what I mean about the tone and the humour. I am always weak for a well-structured adventure romance, and Stormbenders stands the test of time because it’s just such a well-written fic. 

The Undying Fire, by Boogum | Rating: T | Word Count: 534,665

Summary: "He has the eyes, Princess Ursa." They were half-forgotten words, a whisper of fears never explained. Zuko had dismissed it all as nothing to worry about—until he somehow healed the Avatar. Fire healers weren't meant to exist, except he did. He'd saved the kid's life. Naturally, he wanted answers. Too bad finding them wasn't so simple...

My thoughts: This fic is mostly Gen, and Zutara shows up in the latter half of the series. Despite being a ZK shipper I like plenty of Gen fics too, and The Undying Fire gives me the best of both worlds. I love the world building, the humour, and the slow ramp up of the Gaang friendships. I absolutely love how the canon divergence is so subtle at first and gradually unfurls into something super different, yet retains much of its ATLA charm. Boogum’s written some other bangers too, and I have to give honorable mention to Zuko’s Tiny Dilemma (where a spirit transforms ponytail Zuko into his six-year-old self, and Uncle into a teapot, and somehow it becomes an emotionally compelling 100k word saga) and Following Blue (season 2 canon divergent Bluetara with a bigger focus on romance). 

Katara Alone & associated fics by cablesscutie | Rating: T | Word Count: 86,890

Summary: The war is over, and with it goes the only life she has ever known. In this era of love and peace, the world is becoming new, and Katara is unsure of her place in it. That's okay though. Katara has rebuilt her life from scratch before, and she will do it again.

My thoughts: I love post-war “Katara sets out to find herself and also finds Zuko” fics. Katara Alone is a fabulous coming-of-age story with some good old fashioned letter flirting during Katara’s solo travels. The sequel, Lady of the Tides, has some very thoughtful depictions of Katara’s place within the post-war Fire Nation, and the accompanying story from Zuko’s POV, The Fire Lord at Home, hits all my buttons. Like…Zuko is Fire Lord Good Boy! He passes legislation! There is political optimism! Swoon. 

Another Word for Alchemy, by FanPanda 13 | Rating: T | Word Count: 108,000+ 

Summary: Five years have passed since the Avatar defeated Fire Lord Ozai, and the members of the Gaang have all gone in their own direction. But when Aang invites them all to a Peace Summit at the North Pole and tells them of his new project, for which he will need their support, the group comes together again for adventure, fun and romance. AU. Zutara. COMPLETE.

My thoughts: Now this is a fic that thoroughly crept up on me. The first 3/4 is good old fashioned fluffy, funny, fourth wall-breaking Gaang shenanigans with plenty of Zutara. But the last quarter? Oh boy does it come right at you and slam you in the solar plexus with the platonic love and found family feels and the complexities of those feelings when you’re a teenager. The impact of Aang’s loss of the Air Nomads is treated very thoughtfully here, way more so than in the show. 

The Slow Path, by TazmainianDevil | Rating: T | Word Count: 125,723 

Summary: Eight years after the fall of Ozai, Aang returns to the friends he left behind.

My thoughts: This is actually a Taang story with a great ZK subplot. But what I love about it is that the whole Gaang (including Suki ALWAYS INCLUDING SUKI) is superbly characterized. The ZK banter is top notch. I could actually hear their voices in my head in some of the scenes. Their relationship is playful but has plenty of emotional heft. And the plot is exciting and well-developed. My favourite thing, though, is how the author treats Toph’s POV: it’s very thoughtfully written, with consideration towards how she perceives the world.

Simple Misunderstanding, by ShamelessLiar | Rating: T | Word Count: 80,965 

Summary: Katara was captured by Zuko, but there was a lapse in communication. Takes place after The Fortuneteller. Fierce Katara, honorable Zuko, and meddlesome Iroh. Also, music night

My thoughts: Generally I don’t love fics where Katara gets captured, especially by Zuko (just a personal preference, not here to judge). But! I love this one, because…well, the circumstances of Katara’s capture by Ponytail Zuko are simply hilarious. Katara is suspicious and stubborn; Zuko has a one-track mind and doesn’t understand why Iroh is treating his prisoner so nicely; oh, and Aang gets into an amazing side quest with some spiritual animals. The only thing about this story is that it ends a little abruptly since the author was considering a sequel, but it still reads as a standalone fic. The author also wrote His Majesty Prefers Blue and Call Me Katto, two ZK classics, but Simple Misunderstanding is far and away my favourite work. 

Clothe Me in Seasons, Dress Me in Snow, by sadladybug | Rating: T | Word Count: 62,026

Summary: It is not the memorial she deserves, nor the one she would want. But it can't be helped. He owns no property in the other nations, and he needed to keep her close. Closer than she was in life, anyway. Zuko's reflections on a life lived and a life that could have been.

Review: sadladybug lives up to the username by creating a sadness so contagious that I have yet to recover from it, and I cope by recommending this fic to other Zutara shippers so that more may suffer like I did. (Stop the cycle? No.) Look — I think there’s something extremely beautiful and poetic about a love that changes in nature and form and expression, but not in intensity and devotion, and that’s what this fic is about. Loved it. Never reading it again. 

One shots: 

There’s a category of canon-compliant Zutara one-shots that are all extremely painful, and I cannot get enough of them: in the next life by we-were-angels, taking place right before Katara’s wedding to Aang; water can heal, water can break by crazyache, about why Katara didn’t attend Yakone’s trial. 

To combat the above, here’s a few funny, fluffy ones that make me cackle: i am older now by ama (who wrote the banger that is The Blackfish and the Dragon), an old!ZK fic that I read to counteract the emotional damage inflicted by psychedelic_aya’s we hold our hearts in silence; all good things start with tea by yodalorian, where Zuko’s hapless Disney sidekick-esque advisors try to get him a wife; And Half at One Another’s Throats by songofhopeandhonor (whose account is deleted), about Zuko’s harebrained proposals to Katara; The Dragon of the West’s Guide to Flirting by bluesunflower44, which is exactly what it says on the tin and the awkward disaster you’d expect. Waiting on a Steady Sun, by nire, is a long version of my favourite tropes: fake marriage + idiots to lovers ft. pining for your spouse. 

I generally don’t love modern AUs, but akaiiko’s talk is cheap (and i’ve got expensive taste), where Katara meets Zuko at a frat party, is a whole damn delight; my old aches become new again by jamesstruttingpotter is a wonderfully indulgent modern AU based on Our Beloved Summer. 

And finally, some season 3 character studies: don’t tell me how to feel by paintingcranes, ft Katara at the Western Air Temple being increasingly incensed at both Zuko trying to be helpful and how other people react to his helpfulness; the other side of mercy by crazyache, where Sokka calls Katara “high-strung and crazy” and that really makes Zuko think; The Silent Garden by romilley (whose WIP The Horizon is also fabulous), where Katara and Zuko avoid their feelings through a reluctant-allies-with-benefits arrangement (ft a way of depicting intimacy and sex that makes me think of Normal People); a deep delight of the blood by eruthros, where Zuko asks Katara to practice bloodbending on him out of pragmatism but also a little bit of guilt (it’s unrated, but that “Kink Without Sex” tag is there for a reason).

alice reads poetry for the sheer joy of it. the real love of her life is poetry and her favourite thing to do is curl up with a big mug of tea and read some poems. narcissa reads poetry because she is pretentious and wants to be liek, an Intellectual. that kind of vibe. (alice teaches her to love it for the right reasons eventually. they read sappho together like the lesbian losers they are)

since i am in university (unfortunately) i like putting them in my shoes because i hate them. i think narcissa woudl be an english, psychology, or anthropology major, and alice would be an engineering, music, health sciences, or biology major (i have a lot of Career Paths in mind for her). she could also do english for Rivalry reasons ( I AM AN ENGLISH MAJOR IF YOU COULDNT TELL)

alice would minor in something "political" (for lack of a better word) (gender studies, global studies etc) and she would be super political around campus, fighting for social justice. narcissa would not gaf (ultra privileged rich white girl that she is) and it would drive alice nuts (she is right). she would try to get narcissa to protest w her and narcissa wouuld be like ??? no ??? alice can fix her.

theres an au floating around my head where theyre rival lawyers who have to work together on a case.. and learn about each other along the way... and its set in new york and its raining... idk

i have also been thinking abt them in an orchestra........ narcissa on flute (because i played flute for 5 years and im determined to make it do SOMETHING for me) and alice on bass or violin.. minerva as the conductor... lots of drama

My take on Female Harry Potter

I really want more female Harry Potter fics. I don’t really like gender benders where they make fem!Harry really like small and delicate. Sure in the books and movies he’s shy but not delicate or soft in an mis characterizing way.

I have a list of things that people should do if they want to do a fem!Harry fic. I've seen a lot of opinions on the internet and some of my own, Feel free to add onto this blog if I missed somethings.

Her name

Don't just feminize the name Harry. He is named after Henry Potter who is his great-grandfather in the books. (It is believed)So make the name more meaningful. But it's understandable that it's easier to find a female name that starts with the letter H.

Some people name her after flowers to match the women in her family (maternal) Lily and Petunia. I've mostly seen her be named Rose which to me seems like a really common name to give to a girl. (Probably because most Mexican women use that name).

Her appearance

I personally like when she looks like her dad, with the black crazy hair and tan skin. I feel like most girls look more like their dad than their mother. But I like the idea where she looks like her mom but people have pointed out that Lily doesn't have ginger hair like the Weasleys', it's more of a deep red since she's a red head with green eyes.

But when sticking to her appearance she's still going to be like him in the books, (Matters what your writing). I have mentioned before that Harry Potter is a pretty guy in a past post so as a female she's going to be a handsome girl. At least that's how I see her. I want more Jock Female Harry Potter.

Mentioning that because of barely being fed as a child she'll still be short and thin in her early years of Hogwarts. She'll later gain weight and have healthy hormones, most likely to get her period around the age of 12-14.

Also love buff and short Harry so, I feel like that should also count for him as a female. Obviously with the training of quiditch and having a much healthier food intake.

Also it has been mentioned in a few parts in the books that Harry gets fed up pretty quickly when people compare him to his parents who he has technically never met. He's always seen as some sort of extension and coping mechanism when others compare him to them in the canon books. So I do wanna leave it up to the other creators how they'll fix that in their own AUs both written and in art form. But being constantly compared to your father more than your mother would probably piss Fem!Harry so damn much.

Romantic Pairing and Friendships

I personally like fics when Harry is like asexual/aromatic and doesn't really liked people in a romantic sense. But I have noticed people making him female just so he can be with a guy. Like ??!?! Just write him to be bisexual or gay for fuck's sake.

But Harry's character both in fics and in the canon books don't revolve over solely relationships. She should have some sort of character and build up to the romantic attraction to whoever you want. But also if you like Hinny, then don't be scared to make that happen. Harry is obviously one of the most bisexual characters I have ever read. So make that happen with girls, like her having a crush on Cedric and Cho, ending up in a relationship with Ginny. Lesbian fem!Harry Potter.

when fics have only Harry being a female and the others are still the same then she'll most liley be closer to Hermione than with Ron. Boys at the age of like 11-15 find girls confusing so they'll probably join teams to argue with Ron when he says stupid shit. I can also see her standing on the sidelines as a third wheel as Hermione and Ron argue again. Again close with the Weasleys, Molly probably tried to pair Rom and FemHarry until it was very clear that they didn't see each other like that. And Ron obviously liked Hermione in a romantic way.

Her abuse

I am going to point out that abuse towards her could probably be either worse or lessened than in the books. She could be abused more because she reminds Petunia of her sister or the fact that she looks much like James than her sister. Probably forced to take more chores because she's a girl and Dudley shouldn't have to do it.

By lessen I mean some people feel more guilt when hitting a girl, mostly out of social norms that hitting females at any age is looked down upon more than males. (Abuse is still abuse no matter what)

Having Snape hate her more because she doesn't look like her and more her father.

Most of the fics that I'm going to recommend do have more abuse than is told in the canon books.

World building

Some of my favorite fics involve world building, involving pureblood marriages, using the fact that as a woman she'll get more marriage offers out of necessity than as her original male self.

Manners and clothing.

The Yule ball, would probably go with Ron as a friend after he failed to ask out Hermione unless Fem!Harry gets a date before that.

she is an orphan to me, mostly because i imagine that she is a little bit abrasive and can very often forget her manners, especially when provoked. she’s not nearly as rude as naruto or sasuke but she lacks the well-mannered politeness of lee, neji, and gai because she had no one to teach her these things (ok we all know that iconic sakura scene where she complains about naruto’s #fatherless behavior to sasuke, a fellow orphan, who gets pissed off at her? yeah… tenten also behaves #fatherlessly sometimes)

HOW exactly she is an orphan varies depending on what i’m writing - sometimes it’s the standard “parents died in the kyubi attack.” sometimes her mother died in childbirth and her father turned to his work in grief and died on a mission. sometimes both her parents are anbu who had a child (by accident?) but don’t want to quit their jobs so, again, died on a mission. it really depends on the themes of the fic - also, i do like to occasionally give her a slightly older sister who takes care of her after their parents die

this is mostly to justify the fact that i pretend she looks like this, but one of her parents is from kumo and moved to konoha temari-style, tho this was at a time when they had to renounce their home village and could not become a shinobi of konoha. they never got married hence why she doesn't have a last name. i have an AU in the vault that provides an angsty variant on this where both her parents are from kumo, but i am keeping that close to my chest just in case i ever write it

complete disregard for canon and inspired by this post by @erumai-maadu but despite having a march birthday, tenten is actually younger than neji and lee because she was born in the previous year. she got put in the academy early because that’s what they do with orphans

tenten is a hot girl. you now how every girl was in love with sasuke when they were in the academy? that’s how it was for tenten in her year. she was a lot of girls’ gay awakening. basically this post but it’s true for everyone

she is also oblivious tho so does not realize her own charms and that people are into her. A LOT of team gai’s mission success rate in other villages has to do with tenten accidentally charming the pants off shinobi who are otherwise hostile to konoha

tsunade is of course her idol, but she looks up to pretty much all kunoichi older than her - when she was due to graduate from the academy, she secretly hoped that kurenai would be her sensei, but obviously ends up happy with gai (an iconic male feminist in this misogynistic ass shonen LMAO)

ino is her non-team gai best friend, partly b/c they actually knew each other growing up: her father was in the torture and interrogation unit when he was alive, so he was well acquainted with inoichi, but they would’ve gravitated together anyway because they’re both funny, bossy, and gossipy.

also she doesn’t like sakura for a while in the same way that like. when your friend and the guy she’s been dating get into a fight and almost break up but then stay together and heal so your friend is happy but you still side-eye the guy for a couple of years? yeah. she does grow to love sakura by the time we get to the timeskip tho

SPEAKING OF NON-TEAM GAI FRIENDS. idk. idk. maybe it’s cus of this fic, which i originally read on ff.net many years ago, maybe it’s cus of this fanart of them as anbu teammates that i saw also years ago and now can't link but…her and sasuke would be friends. maybe they somehow became friends as children, before his clan was murked. maybe in a rare fic of mine when neji actually dies, she tries to replace him with sasuke. maybe kakashi puts them on a long mission together during the Blank Period and they bond cus tenten is good at bonding with standoffish brooding b*tches idk. sasuten friendship is real to me tho

gai (and lee) have rubbed off on her with the rivalry shit: she tries hard to fight it but she is compelled through a force far beyond her control to challenge temari. first to a rematch but eventually it’s like. temari comes to the village and tenten is baiting her into rock-paper-scissors and shit like that. she absolutely is keeping score. just like kakashi and gai, they are evenly matched

ok clearly i want tenten to collect guys with offputting vibes like pokemon cus her and sai would also be friends TO ME. IDK. literally yesterday in the shower i had a fic idea where tsunade assigns tenten, sai, and sasuke to be kakashi’s bodyguards when he becomes hokage. is this idea mostly to further my sasusai agenda but also make tenten a main character in it for some reason? maybe so. i am not sorry

TL;DR: multiple people can arrive at the same fanfic idea/premise in different ways, but also, getting inspired by a different fanfic is not stealing, please don't gatekeep!

I joined a new fandom (it's Resident Evil (RE), which I'm mostly mentioning for that one 'nosy' anon because hell yeah I am super nosy as well, so here you go, dropping some names!), and I quickly stumbled upon one fandom-specific plot trope that I thought was both pretty neat but also super obvious (Infected!Character fic, which, in a world with zombies and viruses that cause zombies is a very logical trope).

Anyway, there was not quite as much body horror as I thought there would be, although I'm still looking, but that's not why I'm writing to you, that's just the (un)necessary background.

There was this one fic that I opened, which in its Author's Note clearly stated that the author set this fanfiction in another author's AU, because they loved the world created by this first author. The first fanfiction author basically came up with their own Infected!Character design and backstory (including fanart), and the second fanfiction author liked it so much they were now writing this fic based on/in that AU. Obviously not quoting the AN directly, but this second author was very complimentary and explicitly mentioned where they got the idea from, gushing about the first author.

In the AN for chapter two, the second author stated that they weren't aware that that first fanfiction author didn't allow others to write about the Infected!Character AU they'd made, that that first author in fact only allowed a very limited number of people they publicly approved of to write about their AU, and nobody else was allowed to touch the Infected!Character AU. This second author was now apologising in the AN for not knowing this, plus mentioning that they changed chapter one to switch up the backstory & design to not be too close to that of the first fanficton author's AU.

That made me sad, honestly. I've seen this attitude a couple of times, where fanfiction authors are super protective of their ideas that they won't allow any other fanfiction author to write about them, and it's always struck me as a little bit hypocritical, given the whole deal of fanfiction. Especially when the original/first fanfiction author is credited and the inspired work is clearly done because the second author loved the first fanfiction so much. If it's a highly developed/specific and original AU (so not just any common trope), and you don't even mention the fanfic you were inspired by, then I find that rude, but just flat out not allowing people to even touch 'your' thing? C'mon!

This partially ties into my other gripe about a specific type of comments I occasionally get, which are along the lines of 'huh interesting idea where did you get it? bc/btw there is this other fic with the same idea (posted before you)'; idk if I got the tone right, but they never seem to be actually genuinely asking how I got the idea (and I always delight in telling them, not sarcastically, I genuinely love talking about this stuff, bc I get inspired by the most random things and I love love writing 'original'/new things!! I love tropes as much as anybody, I read a shitton of them, but i when I write I love coming up with new shit/plot! it's so fun!!). They just vanish after my explanation, even when I try to invite further conversation. It always feels to me like they're 'checking' that I didn't steal the idea, and it feels a bit lousy.

I mean in (larger) fandoms, it is not surprising at all that two or three or even more people arrive at the same idea, maybe even inspired by the same thing, same reading of canon, or not, varied experiences--and just because the works are similar doesn't mean that they were inspired by one another, but if they are, that's not a sin! I just want people to not take everything in bad faith, and also, to not 'disallow' others from getting inspired, especially when they do it in a very polite manner!

It's because of comments like these that I sometimes, very privately, worry that before I'll manage to post the long fic I spent months writing--because I'm one of those who wants the thing finished before I start posting--somebody else will have a similar idea, post their thing first, and then I'll look like I'm lying about not reading/stealing their idea, or just jumping on the bandwagon, which again, it's not a bad thing, actually.

And it shouldn't be like that! I shouldn't worry, and people should also be more willing to accept that authors can arrive at the same idea at (roughly) the same time & accept that explanation without side-eyeing the author, and that if an author is inspired by a different fanfic, that's not a sin either (in fact, for me it would be an honour).

None of this is new either, but that RE stuff reminded me of it again.

Anyway, I'm going to finish writing an Infected!Catboy!Leon fic now and be very unsurprised if I find out that somebody else has had the same idea long before me (aside from one or two reader fic inserts with that topic that I stumbled upon on tumblr, bc that's just not my thing at all (reader insert, I mean)).

YES! After the massacre, Houhua basically becomes Sasuke's officially unofficial guardian. There's no real paperwork for it done, but like, they really only have eachother

Sasuke flocks to him as the only other Uchiha, and Houhua takes him in both out of pity + not wanting him to be alone, and also partially because he knows Sasuke is a main character and his survival heavily depends on sticking close to main characters in the hopes that it'll help bump his character importance points

Houhua and Sasuke are stupidly rich now just because all of the Uchiha belongings and funds are theirs now.

There's a bit of trickiness bc technically, most of it should go specifically to Sasuke (as he's now default clan heir, though that isn't exactly worth much now) but Houhua is older than him

Houhua will probably end up splitting things between them, and Sasuke will trust him enough to do it (+ be too young to really realize that's something as important as it really is)

I think in canon, and lot of Uchiha shit got stolen or went ""missing"" in their death, mostly bc Sasuke... wouldn't know what to watch out for / prevent people from trying to take. But with Houhua here, it's going to be way hard for anyone to do any sort of grave robbing

Houhua is absoloutley gonna be taking inventory and his past life's experience means he knows to be on guard for people looting the compound when he's not looking !! There might even be some fun drama w that in the future ,,,

Houhua is stuffing weapons and money into Sasuke's pockets, very much fussing over him every chance he gets.

(Because Sasuke is his meal ticket!! He insists to himself, going out of his way to demolish anyone who looks at Sasuke even a little bit funny)

I honestly think Houhua would make for a good guardian for Sasuke overall, tho he'd for sure have his faults. The key word here is 'guardian', not anything like a father— Sasuke is gonna end up seeing Houhua as his (new, better, real) big brother over shitty Itachi over there

Houhua, as Shang Qinghua, lived to be very old (for a human, not for a cultivator) and had a hand in raising and training many disciples.

I like to reference Pride Is Not The Word I'm Looking For (aka the single best Shang Qinghua fic of all time) for my characterization for him, so he's like. Genuinley a good teacher and uncle, when he tries to be. He is just also burdened with crippling self doubt and likes to insist that every nice thing he does is canceled out by his own selfish reasoning behind doing those nice things

In Naruto world especially, filled with shitty murderous parents and a government that churns out murder babies, I think Houhua will be winning awards in his own parenting skills

Then there's also the fact that Houhua did know and interact with Sasuke before the massacre, just not too often. He was Itachi's weird cry baby friend, he'd hang out with him sometime

They just were never really close, and never really got to interact 1 on 1 for long— till, ofc, the massacre happens, and now Sasuke is latching on to Houhua and hyperventalating if anyone so much as looks like they're going to try and separate them

Houhua's existence as a whole allows Sasuke to be a lot more vulnerable, both because he is not "the last Uchiha" and also because Houhua will no doubt try to piggy back off of his revenge quest or even try to steal it entirely (to try and become a more important character, he insists to himself)

So Sasuke is just. Nowhere near as alone as before. And Houhua's own relationship with Itachi helps Sasuke believe Houhua might get it... more than other people, at least.

Ofc, there's also conflict in Sasuke maybe not thinking Houhua gets it "enough", or like Sasuke himself does, because Sasuke was, ofc, Itachi's little brother.

^ I think that would inevitably come in to play later, when Sasuke realizes Itachi and Houhua might have feelings for eachother. Sasuke would be so fucking hurt and feel so fucking betrayed, believing that maybe Houhua never "got it" to begin with

Things get even more complicated depending on when Sasuke learns this tho, because eventually Houhua is going to share his suspicions about the massacre being not as simple as it looked. So Sasuke's own feelings on Itachi are gonna go on a roller coaster of their own, trying to figure out if he himself can or should forgive his brother or no

Its all just a mess tbh, I love to see it

I HONESTLY DUNNO IF SASUKE WILL GO WITH OROCHIMARU OR NOT !! On one hand, mmmayybe ,,,, if he does, Houhua will go with him, full stop.

But there's also a chance that Houhua might try to take his place too! And he and Orochimaru are inevitably going to interact eventually, bc I have plans ,,,

(I mentioned it in another post, but if Houhua ever shares about the system and his past life with literally anyone, I would choose Orochimaru to find out. I think I could get the most milage out of him, and Orochimaru would absoloutley try to hack into the system for immortality and power or some shit)

I think whatever route I go with w Orochimaru will just depend on what I'm feeling when I get to that point in writing the fic. We will have to see where the story naturally leads me, you know? All of the options are so good, so it's hard to choose

On this blog, I am (mostly) a canon-compliant Marauder fanfic writer - who likes to discuss the canon. I mostly ship canon (especially JILY!!!, Hinny, Romione, Tedromeda, Remadora) because I am boring, but I adore Prongsfoot and Sebinis, and I’m not anti most non-canon ships if they are true to their canon characterisation.

2024 Fic Rundown

2024 was my first year writing fiction, courtesy of Astarion.

words posted: Well, the bare stat is 198,977. However, that includes Fangs For The Memories, which I co-write with @fartasticdurge, and The Lord, the Thief, their Mistress & Fart's Lover, which was mostly written by @fartasticdurge and @vakariansyndrome (and it's seriously so fucking funny, you guys). So I'm going to estimate my personal word count at around 169,400.

additional words written: A few thousands of words between in-progress chapters of Hunting Creatures and Jury Duty. Oh, and some spontaneous porn in the comments.

Don't Go Blindly Into the Dark - No archive warnings apply. Wesper-centric canon divergence where Van Eck forced Wylan to pretend he was blind. Starts pre-canon but we are about to enter canon timeline now. Jesper and Wylan meet at university, and a lot of dramatic stuff happens...

Our Gods Have Abandoned Us - Major Character Death. Post-canon canon divergence where Van Eck wins and the (surviving) crows are in hiding. This is mostly a character study into their various responses to the situation(s) but there is a bit of a plot developing it's just mostly a character-driven plot.

Portrait of a Dead Girl - Major Character Death; Rape/Non-Con; Underage Sex. Alina-centric AU based on Maggie O'Farrell's The Marriage Portrait and Browning’s My Last Duchess, which are based on the real life of Lucrezia d’Este/de’ Medici. At fifteen, Alina is forced into an arranged marriage with Aleksander Morozova, the Duke of Os Alta. Within a year, Alina is dead. Her official cause of death is marked as putrid fever, but many believe that she was actually poisoned by her husband.

Somehow, Through the Storm - Major Character Death; Rape/Non-con. Kanej-centric and Hadestown-inspired Orpheus and Eurydice story, wherein Inej signs a contract without knowing what it's going to cost. When he finds her trapped at the Menagerie, Kaz makes a deal: if he can walk all the way home with Inej behind him, never looking back at her, they will both go free. It's not as easy as it sounds.

Probably Wylan-centric. The whole og inspo quote is kiss your perfect day goodbye because the world is on fire, tuck your innocence goodnight you sold your friends like guns for hire. Also think about Nobody’s Soldier by Hozier (choose between being a salesman or a soldier; choose between being a butcher or a pauper)

Love isn’t love ‘til you give it away - kanej-centric Sound of Music AU; Inej Ghafa is hired from within a Saints’ convent to work as a governess for the seven children of Captain Kaz Brekker and his late wife, Imogen. Since the loss of his wife, Kaz put his gloves on and never took them off again. Can Inej begin to melt the ice around his heart? And can they withstand growing pressure for Kaz to join the coming war? I want to include the other crows but I haven’t figured out exactly how yet

So I got a comment on a fic with this Ship tagged and decided to post some OverWatch essays like I had QuakeRider back in the day. I use a lot of the same lore/Head Canons for most fics so these will cover most of them. If you want an insight into what I use when typing here ya go.

Now I have only ever posted the Platonic version of this Ship but I would imagine those who like them as a romantic Ship as well like a lot of the same things. I will be talking mostly about the platonic version so if you hate the romantic version this should still be pretty safe to read.

All right so just what is this and why do I like it. CyborgRabbit is the duo of Genji Shimada a cyborg and Hana Song who's mecha is called 'Tokki' which is rabbit in English hence the Ship name. Now why do I enjoy these two?

Gammers ftw!

If you know the backstories of these two then you know they are both Gammers, my people. Sharing a hobby is great for fanworks and is fun to play with. This is actually a plot point in my fic 'A Green Ryu, a Blue Ryu, and a Pink Tokki' The fic actually came about from a bunch of fanart of Hana and the Shamada bros hanging pre-Kiriko being added.

Asian solidarity.

Giving fans an excuse to showcase both Japanese and Koren cultures, even if just in cute art or amusing One Shots, means more of it will be made. OverWatch has a large and very diverse cast so it does creators some good to look into multiple cultures while working. As shallow as OverWatch, or other media, can be not all creators are lazy and some put in some work. As a fan of Anime I am more familiar with Japanese culture than Koren but learning can be fun as well as fuel for those Plot Bunnies.

In Need Of A Mechanic?

Hana is good with her Mech so it not unreasonable she could learn to do some basic maintenance on Genji. If the pair are teamed up together it would make sense she would learn how to deal with some ware and tear and he would learn some basics about Tokki. The pair both rely on advance tech to fight and without it working properly they are more vulnerable.

Ok, ok joking aside I really do like this trailer, the one with Hanzo vs Alexstraza is also not bad.

They Could Work Well Together

Two people Genji has worked with a lot in the past are Jesse and Lena both of which rely on guns like Hana does. His speed matched with her firepower could make for one Hell of a mess on the battlefield. They are also both reckless so would Leroy Jekins shit...with varying results. They also both know what it is like working for the Government, different ones mind you but red tape is red tape.

She Is A Lot Like Kiriko

Kikiro's addition to the game shows Genji had a bold little not sister and Hana could fit that hole in his life, Kikiro being a thing or not. Now her being a bit like his not sister could be a bit iffy for the romantic version of this Ship but that is a personal thing. Personally the more spunky burnets around Genji to get him out of his head when he needs the better, throwing Jesse and Lena in there.

She Is Also A Lot Like Lena

If you wanted Lena to go on missions with Emily, wouldn't that be nice Blizzard? Hana could take her place covering Genji and yelling at him when he does something insane and/or stupid. Leave that guy alone too long and he'll get himself into some insanity. Hana is not much better going by her cinematic alone.

Hana & Hanzo

Depending on if Hanzo is a thing in Genji's life in your work this would be a thing. Tying back to her being like Kiriko she could help him heal because he is her friend's brother. They had an adopted little sister before so why not another one? Or one in a world where Kiriko isn't a thing, her timeline doesn't work as she 21 and Genji is 35 OW1 and 37 OW2 so no way they trained together as kids she'd need to be like 31. Hana is 19 or 21 depending and unless you are doing an AU no bad math needs to be ignored for them all to hang.

Their Personalities Mesh Well

Like the other Ships that revolve around Genji their personalities mesh pretty well. Now that is a matter of opinion, fair, but this is my blog and so I am speaking for myself here. Depending on when changes how well they mesh. Take raging murder hobo Genji from BlackWatch and there is going to be a lot of work needed there. OverWatch Genji meshes easier. OverWatch 2 Genji is getting his hoodie stolen till he gets her a Tokki themed one.

All in all I think they could be a good team and I have one fic up exploring that right now but no doubt there will be more. Will being posting more of these to other Ships I use often as well as characters and lore. You know where to leave your thoughts.

So don't know if this has been asked before...

In DC Multiverse is real. The stable Universes and the Dark ones born of people's fears which will just disintegrate sooner or later. We saw it in the Death Metal arc...

So, picturing Cartoon/Silver Age/World's Finest/WFA/Fanon Good Dad Bruce somehow ending up in the canon universe.

He's already encountered the Dark Universes.

And he's convinced this is another of those - with a Batman who embodies his fear of letting his mission consume him, making him betray his children.

So, since this Universe is set to disintegrate soon anyway... He can maybe kidnap/rescue his - well, not exactly his, but hey, semantics - kids and take them to his stable universe?

Or Canon!Bruce showing up in a Good Dad Bruce timeline and everyone immediately clocks him as one of the Dark Batmen?

Hi!!!! Glad you found and enjoyed some of the content despite misgivings of the name. I often find myself reminiscing in humor on how much the name doesn't match this blog. I hate Bruce (specifically comics Bruce), but that's a much smaller part of my content. This blog is basically an AU/HC focused one that tends to favor Tim (I'm a bit biased. I love all the batkids, though).

As far as the AU you've proposed, I've seen somewhat similar AUs but not quite the same. A universe that holds more than one version of all the batkids is gonna be intense and full of chaos. I'm all here for it.

I'm also all here for Bruce beating the shit out of his "evil" self. Just let good dad Bruce beat up canon Bruce.

There's a few fics out there where Tim or one of the other batkids travels to another universe where the batfam is not nearly as messed up as they are in canon. Just healthy communication, support, etc. I absolutely love and devour those types of fics.

Mythos melodies au designs: asl!

So for some context I tend to change up my art style depending on what kind of story I’m telling which I feel a lot of people do so for this specific fic I wanted to do the art in a very funky collage style! So shanks is supposed to look like a water color painting but the kids are supposed to look like they came out a coloring book ^^

The fic is set around late fall / early winter so the kids get comfy clothes

Sabo was the easiest for me mostly because he is my favorite lol. I actually got inspired by @/where-does-the-heart-lie and how they draw him so that’s why he’s albino, because he is so pale in their artwork and then I have to give him blue so I gave him the star sweater from coraline

Luffy was fun to design. I gave em polka dots to match with shanks since their relationship here is very important to the plot. Also bandaids because I think they are cute. Luffy is also trans in this fic! Which way? I think it’s obvious if you go through my other posts lol

Ace looks the most different here but I have a good reason I swear! He’s not human, and for his species i took the dnd version of it where there appearance changes on the season ( it’s emotions in dnd but eh) so in the summer he has black hair but in the autumn it turns red (and it explains why his freckles are fire colors) and then I took the sweater colors again from coraline

Fun fact: ace was the one to suggest they match outfits but he will deny it until the day he dies:]

And for another context crumb: this is set in the canon universe essentially except there is a shit ton canon divergence if you couldn’t already tell. I will try to keep everything in line with canon lore (mostly) , character and world building customs the same but the way the plot is going to go is taking an entire left turn into hell very quickly
