OKAY SO WHO ASKED FOR A POST THAT DETAILS DAMIANS CONNECTIONS TO MAGIC?.. nobody? oh okay.
(be forewarned, this is long)
now after ignoring batman 666, let's see what we have.
ROBIN: SON OF BATMAN (2015)
now, in robin: son of batman #1 It's confirmed that after his death in batman incorporated, damian went to hell. Hell is usually connected with the more magical side of the dc universe, but that's not it.
The entirety of the comic delves into damians connections to more mystical things. mythical swords and magical ancient towers, weird extinct bat-dragons, magical cults that want to destroy the whole world, etc etc.
this is easily regarded as one of damians best comics and having peak damian characterisation, so obviously Damian being magically inclined can easily work well with his character.
Now, after a barrel load of compliments, let's get to the extremely negative side of things.
TEEN TITANS (2016)
Damian's cloned brother has magic and that sentence is about as much as i care for this book. Moving on.
BATMAN (2016)
Again, dog shit damian characterisation, but here we go. Damian here actually shows an ability to use a binding spell and has a wand, making some sort of deal with a random demon, but a far cry from damian apparently selling his soul in batman 666. Moving on finally out of rebirth because that was a bad time for Damian's character.
ROBIN (2021)
Now we go back to the good. Apparently from the maternal part of damians family, magic is more commonplace. ra's even having a whole spell book to his name. Robin 2021 kinda toys with the ghul family and the lazarus pits magical and devilish side which isn't new... but it's new to involve damian!
In the final parts of this story, Damian's heart specifically is used as a plot device, lord deathman even dubbing it as "the bloodstream of the demon" and ruh (ra's' mother) uses it as a power source to fuel demon summonings, which started the Lazarus rain event.
TEEN TITANS DARK (Unreleased)
Back in early 2023 (i think) dc teased a sort of "teen titans dark" with damian, black alice and monkey prince. The "dark" moniker referencing Justice league dark, a magic team made up of magic users that solve magical bullshit. It's a good book, recommended read, i just thought I'd add this to the pile.
Detective comics/Knight terrors
Now, including these two together because they're about the same topic: Dreams.
damian is confirmed to have some sort of control over dreams and sleep, defeating demons that show up in his sleep, yet never actually disappear when he wakes up. He also has an ability to stay awake after a massive worldwide phenomenon causes everyone, even the dream masters that taught damian, to sleep and experience night terrors.
Dreams are, again, connected to the magical side of the dc universe. Now I'm not going to pretend like i actually read sandman to you, i can't lie on ramadan, so let's all give me a pass here for my lack of understanding of all that.
Batman and robin (2023)
In this, damian mentions a bit of off screen monster hunting with Frankenstein and lays a trap that lights someone on fire. I used to think this was some sort of hex but this artwork is extremely unclear, but since Frankenstein is mentioned and from my knowledge dc's Frankenstein is magic let's pretend this is some sort.
As an extra note: this guy definitely died. There's no way about it, he got lit on fire with nobody helping him. He's gone. Damian just killed a man.
Extra Extra notes:
talia using magic!
now, i haven't included these examples in the "the ghuls have magic" segment because uh...
(batman: the doom that came to Gotham/dc bombshells)
yeah...
Not only are these interpretations of talia EXTREMELY orientalist but also just generally out of character and could've been done with any randomly introduced characters.
For the unknowing white american people in the crowd: arabs actually don't only dress in revealing "belly dancer" outfits and lanterns. i know, shocking, we actually wear normal clothes.
And just to add again, there's a lot of stories that include ra's having magic, but I'm not the biggest ra's head (lol) so i didn't read them all, i implore u to do your own research because I'm not doing it.
this about wraps it up. thank you to the magic damian believers may we all win someday.

FEMALE MOVIE/TV RECS (PART 6 / ACTION & THRILLER)
got inspired from a recommendation post so decided to make a list of movies and shows with female-centric stories/female protagonists. since i can't post all of the genres in one post, i'll split it into multiple posts and y'all can save or add to the list as you wish. (disclaimer: i have watched most of these, but i only know about the existence of others. not every movie/show on these lists will be my recommendation. my recommendations will be beneath the list with reasons. also some of these are way better than others in terms of storytelling/performance--which is why i'll list my faves separately):
Common Themes:
-Being betrayed by men you trusted
-Being hunted down by men (usually working for the government)
-Protecting/saving children
-Survivalism
-Family issues and strong family themes
-I'm Such A Loner (TM) Because I'm So Exceptional (TM)
-Guns or swords? Those are your two options.
-Fast and reckless driving and jumping off of things (and a 100% survival rate)
-Getting beat up by men, and then beating up men worse

In light of the news that Nimona got an Oscars nomination I feel I need to talk about the original Graphic Novel, which I love dearly. It started as a webcomic in 2012 and got published in 2015.
Now the GN got picked up by a Fox animation studio Blue Sky in 2015 but Fox was bought up by Disney who later tore down that studio. Perhaps the story of an estranged knight turned to villain because of image branding and dark ambitions of the empire didn’t sit well? At least the story with overt trans and queer-issues didn’t. I WAS surprised when I heard that Disney picked it up and for a time they did work on it. It was 3/4 part done when they shut it down in 2021.
Now that’s a lot of animation work. In comes Netflix (some good animations there) and Annapurna Studios (some good films, GREAT video games) and saves the day. I was happy but cautious. Didn’t like the trailer or the style, but hey it’s happening right?
Now don’t get me wrong. Nimona is not a bad film. It’s quite good and the way it handles gender and HBTQ issues is refreshing but the movie isn’t you know, amazing. (For everyone who thinks it is, good for you but hear me out).
The graphic novel is about two villains, not two misunderstood pure-hearted persons against the world. Blackheart (Boldheart in the movie 😐) is bitter and cold, Nimona is ferral and violent and people who get in their way DIE. They are hunted by the institute, a faceless dictatorship who do inhumane experiments. The King is never seen, a mere media puppet for the institute. It’s the best villain story I’ve read (and yes, I have read Worm)
The character Nimona is the unacceptable other. An anomaly that must be tamed or destroyed. While not as obvious as in the movie Nimona in the GN is of course a symbol for transgenderism. They transform their looks and form all through the book and at times sees themselves as a monster.
Am I sure of this? Well, the author Nate Diana Steveson went from nonbinary to transmasc/bigender and produced She-Ra so my guess is as good as yours.
Now, reading Nimona makes the movie look VERY tame. Was it the rewrite or the short stay at Disney that changed it? How did Stevenson react to it?
Either way, hurray for movie Nimona. Now, please go read the graphic novel Nimona by ND Stevenson.

The reason Tumblr is more hostile to Twitter folks than Reddit folks is because, in my observation, a lot of shitty people (think folks who fucked up so bad in such buckwild ways that there is at least a fanlore page on the subject) of Tumblr circa 2015-2018ish? A lot of them all migrated to Twitter after the porn ban.
The hostility has nothing to do with where folks are coming from and more a fear of old monsters returning to the hunting grounds when we thought we’d finally rebuilt.
#iz rambles#twitter#tumblr#Reddit#tagging the sites because this is important lore#to be clear plenty of terrible people did stay on tumblr it’s just we lost a good chunk to Twitter and it was nice!#tumblr is not free from racists and shitty people sadly and it never has been but that’s another convo#but stuff like people who became the subject of video essays about tumblr nonesense: a lot of them went to Twitter

Episode 109: Let's Get Kraken
In the most recent episode, Cody and Garth dive into the deep waters to talk about Kraken! And in Garth's corner, he covers the art of figureheads (the sculptures of the front of ships)!
Enjoy the images discussed in the episode below (trigger warning: the last two images are of dead animals, there's no blood or obvious signs of distress but y'all deserve a warning nonetheless)! And please come join the episode discussion on the Least Haunted Discord!
Sorry for the late post, I was hunting for a lake monster!
The book Cody read for the episode: Monsters of the Sea by Richard Ellis.
The Swine Whale (left) and possibly Kraken (right) Carta Marina map of Scandinavia (1539).
Illustration by Denys de Montfort. Historie naturelle des Mollusques (1802).
In 1861 the French ship Alecton recovered part of a Giant Squid, Achiteuthus. This event would inspire Jules Verne when writing 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.
A Scandinavian grapnel anchor, aka Krake, made from the top of a spruce tree.
"The Kraken" in 1981's Clash of The Titans, although a feat of stop motion animation by Ray Harryhausen, NOT A KRAKEN.
The Mollusk album by Ween. The inspiration for SpongeBob SquarePants according to show creator, Stephen Hillenburg.
They Might Be Giants album Apollo 18 limited edition Zoetrope vinyl! Only 240 were ever made, Cody has #195 and Garth has #196.
GARTH'S CORNER, GARTH'S CORNER, GARTH'S FIGUREHEAD CORNER!
Here are some of the figureheads mentioned in Garth’s Corner. Special props to the YouTube Channel Baltic Empire for “Carved works and Figureheads: A History of Ship Decorations.” Garth also credits Chris Riley for his article “The History of Ship Figureheads.”
Here’s a carving of an elk’s head found in Säkkijärvi, Finland. It was made between 1750 and 1,500 BCE and is thought to have been attached to the front of a boat.
Some examples of Greek Ships with eyes.
The Oseberg Ship, a lavish ship that was buried in Norway some time in the 800s CE.
A model of the 80-gun Naseby (1655) showing Oliver Cromwell on a horse.
A mezzotint etching by Robert Sayer “Hercules as Ship's Figurehead” (1788).
A modern ship, Neptune, a replica of a 17th century Spanish galleon, originally built for the film "Pirates" (1986).
And finally, here’s an awkward mermaid Garth saw online. Not sure where he found it but here she is.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Trigger Warning Below ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dead Sperm Whale with squid scars on its skin.
Dying Architeuthis found in Toyama Bay, Japan 2015.
Comic Retrospective: Ghost Stories
What is it about?
Continuing the theme of painfully simple names, Ghost Stories is about our main characters... telling ghost stories. And things get spookier as the night progresses...
Unlike the other two comics so far that mostly messed with previously established info/dynamics, this one focused on new questions:
What kind of ghost stories would they tell?
How do they feel about the ghosts & monsters in those stories?
Do they believe in them?
It overlaps a bit with some ideas found later in the comic, like the death of a child. And Link being haunted by something.
The topic of ghost stories is an easy way to learn things about characters -- do they believe in ghosts or souls? Are they 100% earnest about the stories, or do they refuse to even listen to them? Characters can respond in such a big variety of ways when promoted to tell a ghost story... and it can reveal a lot about them.
(Also I feel it'd be a pretty fun roleplay scenario.)
Where did the idea come from?
I originally had this idea in 2015 -- I distinctly remember sitting outside on a June afternoon and drafting the script. And laughing at my own jokes like a crazy person.
I wanted to have some kind of summer spooky story, as a sort of homage to how ghost stories are often told in the summer in Japan.
Reading some horror manga helped formulate the ghost stories they would be telling. Link's are short and sweet, while Ganondorf's is as verbose as a penny dreadful.
Ghost Stories was going to be included in the main comic, originally. But... it's 30 pages, meaning it'd take up an entire chapter, so it had to be a separate bonus comic.
Favorite things about it?
If Triforce of Power was colored instead of grayscale, it would basically look like this comic.
So it was kind of a "what if" exercise. It's wild to think about how ToP would be as a color comic like this.
Also, writing and illustrating the ghost stories was very different and a lot of fun.
Would I make it again?
Yes! Not doing it would feel as weird as skipping a chapter of the main comic.
But is this story canon?
Yes... and no. The story was originally going to be 100% canon -- this is part of why it's available on Gumroad in addition to Patreon. Also, one of the ghost story monsters is even included in the main comic:
However... the biggest problem is the timeline. This story would actually be taking place basically right now, while they've just started the hunt for the Triforce of Power. ...But they're kind of at odds with each other, too, so this just wouldn't really happen.
So... it's very close to being canon.
As a final note, this might be the best Link I've ever drawn:
Or at the very least the most relatable one.
Chapter 16: Sweat It Out
||The Prophecy Series||
She knew for 15 years that this day would come. She knew her destiny had already been written. That her death had been foretold.
She knew she would have to stop him. She knew she would have to kill him. And she thought she was prepared for all of it. But the day she met him she realized how wrong she was…
Set in Season 10
Pairing: MoC!Dean x Female!OC
Warnings: the usual SPN, language, Dean having some... not so appropriate thoughts about Ema
Episode mapping: During episode 15 of season 10 "The Things They Carried"
Note: The events of this story are following season 10 of Supernatural and are taking place between October 2014 and July 2015. I tried to make sure that all the references to weapons, tech, etc. are accurate with the time period.
AN: This is my first time writing a fanfic but the story has been in my head for too long and it just needed to get out. I hope you like it.
AN: English is not my first language, I apologize for any mistakes.
"Dean is in trouble…" Sam walks in my room, closing the door behind him. "What happened? Is he ok?" I frantically ask. Sam tells me about Dean killing Cain. "So? He used The First Blade? And he resisted it?" "He did but he is not ok. And he will need help… Your help..." I look at Sam, not understanding his point. "He's given up looking for another solution." Sam continues. "He…" "I still don't know how to stop him. And I don't know how I could possibly help." "He's given up on himself but he will keep fighting so he can save you." "This is absurd… There is no saving me!" "I know my brother. You may believe there is no other way, but he believes he can save you somehow. And, right now, you are the only reason he has not given up yet. And he needs to be reminded of that! Constantly!" He pauses, taking a deep breath. "You need to stay by his side. I… I need you by his side." I look at him dumbfounded. I only suspect how hard this is for him… To ask me for help… To ask me to be constantly by Dean's side… Especially when, until this moment, his priority was to keep me as far away from him as possible. "Ok…" He releases a breath nodding. "Thank you!"
"I'm either coming with you on your hunts or I will find cases of my own. I'm done staying in this bunker! You have two choices, you let me help you or you stay out of my way!" "What's going on?" Sam enters the kitchen. "Sweetheart, I am not letting a tech geek hunt monsters. That's not going to happen! Not on my watch!" "That's it!" I poke at Dean's chest with my index finger. I'm pissed. "Training room! Now! And do not sweetheart me, Winchester! I'm not one of your bar conquests!" I storm out of the kitchen heading to the training room. The brothers on my heels. "We are going to settle this once and for all. If you can pin me to the ground in the next 10 minutes, I'll stay here." "Ema, I'm not going to fight you!" Dean looks to his brother for help. "Oh! You think you can actually hit me?" I say, removing my jacket.
"Just remember, I didn't want to do this!" Dean says, swinging at me but I quickly dodge his hit, smirking back at him. He smiles and attacks again but I swirl around him and kick his legs underneath him. He ends up flat on his back and a frustrated huff leaves his mouth. "Done already?" I ask looking down on him. "I really thought you could last longer." "Oh… princess, you want me to show you how long I can last." He stands again assuming a fighting position. "Promises, promises…" I tease.
GIF from Pinterest
10 minutes later he is lying on the ground, panting. He did actually manage to lay a couple of hits on me but nothing too serious. "Look… I do understand that me being a Commander of a tactile team does not have any meaning for you. But… You keep forgetting that I was sent here to stop a possible demon attack on this bunker! By myself! That should have told you enough." I smile at him from above. "I'll see you in the garage in 30 minutes." "I was holding back!" He yells after me. "I didn't want to hurt you!" "30 minutes, boys!"
"Agents, I gather." I walk confidently in the sheriff's office, my heels clicking on the tiled floor, Sam and Dean following me closely. "Uh, was it the suits, or do we give off some sort of a Fed stench?" Dean jokes "It's the suits. What can I do for you?" The sheriff responses. "Well, uh, we are here investigating the death of private Jackie Prescott." I smile politely, taking the lead. "Sorry to waste your time, agents, but we wrapped that one up. Guy that did it was a special forces officer: Rick Willis. His fingerprints were all over the storage room out on the base where he did it. He even left his dog tags by the body." "So, is he in custody?" I ask. "No, the bastard drank a boatload of gasoline, then lit himself on fire. Left a wife and a baby. Third suicide we seen in six months... Military town…"
Military towns, those always hit me hard… I look around. America's military towns look nothing like the ones in Eastern Europe. But they have similar feeling. The quiet present of discipline, honor and duty. We found out from Rick's wife, he had been acting strange since he had got back from his last deployment and he was constantly thirsty. She pointed us to another family, Kit, the husband had the same symptoms and his wife was worried about him. We are just walking out of their house when I see a man leaning against Dean's precious car. "Recognized your wheels." He says. I guess the boys know him. "What the hell are you doing here?" And… they are not happy to see him, jugging by their reaction. It seems like they have history. "I think I'm gonna be coming with you." Cole, that's the man's name, says. "I stick to you two like flies on roadkill." He points at the Winchesters. "Make sure my buddy comes home in one piece. Look, I know what you two are thinking, but we are not gonna hunt my best friend, who happens to be a friggin’ war hero, by the way. We are gonna find him. And that's the difference." "Another one for the ride." I hear Dean complaining when I move to my car. "Nice wheels!" Cole says to me, before getting in his own Jeep. I just smile.
We follow Cole to a cabin deep in the woods. Dean was right, he won't just step away from this. I hear the sounds of stuff breaking and the boys rush into the building. Before I can get out of my car a man runs out from the cabin, hiding in the woods. I pull out my gun and follow him but I quickly lose him. He is too fast. Faster than a normal man. I circle around going back to the cabin and I meet Dean in front of it. "I lost him." "Me too." He responds and we enter the small one room building. "Oh, God! Oh, God! Something went down my… throat." Cole gasps. "Something moved. It's alive, Sammy." "All right, well, we're gonna get it out of you, okay? We'll figure it out. " Sam tries to reassure him. "A couple years back, Dean and l worked a case. We got stuck in a cannery with this worm. It would get into people's bodies and… last time, electrocution made the worm leave the body." "All right, fine. Electrocution it is! I'm game!" Cole tries to act brave but I can see through him, he is terrified. "Alright! You get to work. I'll go look for Kit." Sam says and I leave the cabin after him. "I will go with you." "No!" He turns around facing me. "Sam, it's not the time for your animosity towards me! Kit is dangerous! You will need help." "It's…" he starts raising his voice but he stops and continues quietly. "It's not about me not liking you. I actually… I do not dislike you… But… You need to stay with Dean. You promised me." I nod and turn back to the house. "Just be careful." I whisper to myself. I know nothing will happen to him, not while I'm alive, but I can't help to worry about him anyway.
"I almost took you off the map. Who would be saving me now?" Dean had already connected the jumper cables to the battery of Cole's Jeep. "Hey, hey, hey!" I stop him before he can press the jumper cable clamps onto Cole’s forearms. "Belt!" I reach my hand out expectedly. He starts to say something but I interrupt him before he can utter a word. "And don't be a smartass about it." I snap my fingers. "Now, Dean!" He rolls his eyes and removes his belt. I give it to Cole to bite on it. "All right, let's fire this puppy up." Dean says "Well, you say that like it's just another Tuesday." Cole jokes in an attempt to act nonchalant before he clenches the belt between his teeth. "Oh, buddy, it's only Monday!" Dean presses the jumping cables to Cole's arms.
"All right! Again!" Cole demands. "No! No, we're done playing 'Operation'. If he zaps you again, you're toast." I stop the two men. "We need a new plan!" "Okay, what do we know about this thing?" Dean asks Cole. "Uh, sucker dries you out. I'm thirsty already, man." Cole starts. "It likes water. Then when that's not enough…" "Blood. l don't know. Maybe the lack of fluids makes the thing hostile." "So? What now?" Dean asks me. "You are supposed to be the smart one!" "What do you think about rapid dehydration?" I turn to Cole. "Big fan! Just make sure you squash that sucker when it goes AWOL."
It might be the middle of March but the cabin is hot as hell and I'm sweating like never before. I remove my flannel and walk into the kitchen to avoid the heatwaves as much as possible. I lean against the table, so I can have a direct view of Cole.
Ema is leaning against the frame of the portal, separating the kitchen from the living room. Her arms are crossed in front of her, her head is tilted back and her eyes are closed. She had removed first her jacket and then her sweater, leaving her in a simple gray tank top. Her dog tags leaning against her cleavage. Her braided hair is damp and a drop of sweat starts rolling from it, down her exposed neck and slowly disappears between her breasts. I want to trace its path with my lips… Son of a bitch… Fuck… me… I try to swallow the lump in my throat. This woman is going to drive me crazy… I hiss when a drop of sweat falls on the cuts on my face and then I realize I was no longer keeping an eye on Cole. Fuck! "What is it?" Ema quickly opens her eyes and inspects my face. "You must have cut it when we were chasing after Kit?"
GIF from Pinterest
She takes a towel from the kitchen counter and damps it with water from the bottle sitting there. She stops in front of me and I stiffen when she positions herself between my legs. "Come here!" She says and carefully cleans the cuts. I can't stop staring at her eyes. She is the most controversial woman I have ever met… She kicked my ass this morning without really trying… And now she is careful not to hurt me while cleaning my cut… And she is so fucking beautiful… And I don't care if Metatron was just trying to mess with me. Not anymore… "This should do for now." She smiles at me. Her phone rings and she goes out to take the call.
"I get it… Why you did it, Dean. My dad wasn't my dad anymore. If l go down that same road… I want you to do that to me, too." Cole says when Ema leaves us alone in the room. She is out speaking with some of her contacts to see if anyone had to deal with this kind of parasite before. "That road? That means giving up! If you think that's where you're headed, then you've got it ass-backwards. You're gonna fight harder than you ever have! You understand?" "Deano. Will you do me the honor of tying me to this chair?" He asks me looking at the water bottle on the table. I start to tie him up but he slips away grabbing the bottle. I slap the water out of his hand and hold him down at gunpoint. "You are gonna sweat this one through!" "I can't, Dean!" "Yes, you can! Listen to me! Yes, you can. Think about your family! Your wife, your kid. You hear me?" "I appreciate the talk, coach. But honestly, all l can think about is slicing your wrist and drinking you like a fountain. Guess that makes me a monster, doesn't it?"
"What's with her? She's kinda bossy." Cole asks me. He is calm again. "I didn't imagine you to be into that kind of a woman. But… Now when I think about it… It actually makes sense… I get it… she is…" "Oh… no, no, no… me and her… definitely not!" I try to hide my real thoughts about her. I'm starting to sound like a broken record, even to myself. "You sure?" Cole asks with raised brows. "It definitely looked like something in the kitchen!" "You should be careful with her!" I laugh at his attempt at matchmaking. "She can kick your ass without breaking a sweat, believe me!" "Oh, I believe you and I intend to stay far far away from her… and from you for that matter… Once this is over, you will never see me again! So… Who is she?" He points with his head to Ema, she is still outside, on the phone. "She is here to stop me when I go down this road. When I become that monster again." "Are you… going down this path again?" "I'm trying to fight it with all I get…"
"We were right! One of my contacts in Tokyo confirmed that dehydration…" I walk back in the room the moment Dean is stomping on the worm with his boot.
We couldn't save Kit. When Dean called Sam to tell him that we had succeeded it was too late for him. And Sam blames himself. "I can't help it, Dean. It feels crappy." "I know it does. You know, you can do everything right. And even still, sometimes… The guy still dies." I have the feeling Dean is no longer talking about Kit.
Brain can't stop thinking about the parallels between Ghilan'nain and Eurydice, and how Solas saw those parallels and feared what could become of Eury. It still floors me that the two of them work so damn well together because how could I have ever known what Ghilan'nain was back in 2015 when I picked her vallaslin because it was the closest to Lady Amalthea's mark? We only ever had a hint of what Ghilan'nain was, the rest was just us interpreting her as a kindly, wispy halla mother; how the hell was any of us supposed to see her coming? This is why it's just so exciting for me that I stumbled on Eurydice's patron goddess the Mother of Monsters.
I couldn't have planned that better if I tried, dude! It's like the dark mirror image or future of Eurydice I didn't know was a possibility and I am living for it. It makes me a little madder that the Inquisitor isn't the main character of Veilguard because oh my god CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT I COULD DO WITH THAT?
Like I get it, I get, this is my oc, I can't expect the game to cater to that but ffffuuucck the missed opportunity of Ghilan'nain and Eurydice battling it out. This is absolutely what rewrites are for and I am gonna go INSANE with it. Eurydice being forced to face that it may have been fate she picked Ghilan'nain as her goddess, that there was something intricately inside her that called out to the Mother of Navigation, Halla, but ultimately of Monsters. Eurydice, who is naturally curious, poking at things she shouldn't, plays with bones and flesh (but only the dead), and using herself for experiments just to see what would happen. I doubt in canon Ghilan'nain heard her prayers, knew her weakness and desires, and when she saw her, would whisper into her mind 'oh my wayward daughter, don't you wish to come home'?
'I offer what you always wanted--knowledge and freedom. I am the only one to understand you. I was the you who embraced the monster, the broken thing, that she was and I fixed myself'.
(Cooing in her ear when Eurydice rejects her that she can't hide from her, she knows what she hides in the hollow husk she calls a chest, she knows there is no beating heart in her, and she knows that she choose the weakest of mates, the shemling--the most breakable of beings--and soon she will shattered right in front of her, like glass, and then Ghilan'nain will take the children and what fun those will be. What twisted things a shemling and elf can make, let's see how twisted).
Again, missed opportunity to have Ghilan'nain control an Inquisitor with her vallasin because that boss fight could go hard and OH GOD EURYDICE BEING PUPPETED TO FIGHT HER OWN SISTER.
HER BEING POSSESSED. HER WORST FEAR. AND GHILAN'NAIN, THE GODDESS SHE WAS CONFRONT BY AS A CHILD, BEING THE ONE TO DO IT. THE ONE THING SHE LOOKED TO FOR SAFETY AND FELT CONNECTED TO AND IT'S COME TO DEStROY HER
THE POTENTIAL, I'M TELLING YA.
And Solas. Solas, man.
He sees her for the first time with the mark and catches sight of her vallaslin beneath her bangs and there's a ping in his heart, the drop in the pit of his stomach. He doesn't know her yet but he does, she has the same look about her. The same curiosity, the same thirst for knowledge, the brilliance, the capability to be so cruel and careless. Eurydice is not Ghilan'nain, Solas knows that, he knows that Eurydice has empathy where Ghilan'nain does not, it is only that Eurydice can not express it in ways people accept or understand. He knows that unlike Ghilan'nain, Eurydice experiments do not extend to hurting and mutilating other creatures; the only things at risk of her in these curiosities are demons, corpses, and herself. He knows that Eurydice does not hunger for power, she only takes what she needs to survive. Her ambitions only go so far.
Eurydice takes what she needs from the animal she hunts and she leaves.
Ghilan'nain would linger over the corpse and lap at the pool of blood, playing with the meat and bones and flesh like children with paint and clay.
And yet, he sees what Eurydice could be if she let the power of the Inquisition change her. The way she wields power for her own interest and rarely does she extend her empathy past those she loves and deemed worthy of it. He worries that she is stepping into Ghilan'nain's footsteps, especially when he finds her studying the mark or experimenting the rifts in questionable ways, and her only saving grace is that she just wants to know more about what it can do.
Sometimes he would say and be grateful that Eurydice lacked creativity. She has no intention of creating new things, only uncovering every nook and cranny of the world, and collecting what is hidden. He can relate to that.
He tries to guide her best but like him, she is stubborn and they clash often. Solas is an imperfect mentor and a worse attempt at a father, but Spirits he tries. He doesn't intend to treat her as a child and he curses himself when he does, for he sees her fight against him and withdraw. To tell her the truth would be worse, however; to both reveal himself and reveal that her beloved goddess was nothing more than a fairytale would have far reaching consequences. It is cowardly that he never tells her, but he tells himself it's for her benefit. Fathers are meant to protect their daughters, aren't they? At least until they're ready for the truth.
When it's over and she throws her severed arm at his feet in disgust, Solas can say he saved her from becoming her goddess.
Of course that assumes, as he has always done, that Eurydice was not capable of avoiding that fate herself. Perhaps that for the link between Ghilan'nain and her, Eurydice was enough of her own person that she would never have fallen into those same missteps; she would make her own. But that is asking both Solas and Ghilan'nain to see Eurydice--and really all modern elves--as people and not pieces on a chess board.
Still, the horror that will dawn upon Eurydice. The further destruction of her entire belief system and that the goddess she loved so much is spreading blight on her people, on her forest, on her home. Again, she'll have to rebuild. That seems like her and her people's entire lives. Rebuilding, remaking, surviving. Eurydice will outlive her goddess and if there is any justice (in my rewrite) then she will be the one to strike the killing blow right between her eyes.
So, I just got to chapter 23 in eliza and her monsters, and I gotta say, you are like- wow- my librarian at school said I was the first to read it so far, and I love it very much! So, what other books have you written if any? I wanna know so I can recommend the books for next year to read!
Amazing question!
I currently have five published novels. Not counting Eliza, the other four are...
Made You Up (2015) is about Alex, a girl with paranoid schizophrenia, just trying to make it through her senior year of high school. The reappearance of her childhood imaginary friend—now a very real and very mystifying teenage boy, Miles Richter—throws all her plans into disarray. (This has some dark humor but is generally fun and overall, I think, lighthearted. It's closer to Eliza than the others.)
Now Entering Addamsville (2019) follows Zora Novak, a girl with a mean streak and a bad reputation in her small haunted Indiana town. Unfortunately, she's also the only one who can save it from the Firestarters, demons that kill the residents and feed off their souls. (The level of horror in this is like Buffy or Supernatural.)
Katzenjammer (2022) is about Cat, a girl with a cat mask for a face, who is stuck with all her classmates in a warped and living School. Cat has to recover her memories to learn how they all got trapped there before they're all hunted down by the terrifying force stalking the hallways. (This is horror horror. There is a lot of violence and very dark themes.)
Greymist Fair (2023) is a retelling of several lesser-known Grimm's Fairy Tales. Set in the remote forest village of Greymist Fair, Heike the tailor and the other young people of the town must contend with the mysterious witch, a vicious killer, the wargs of the forest, and Death themself in order to save Greymist Fair from annihilation. (There's some scary elements here, but it's more dark Christmas vibes.)
Currently, these book are all standalones. I have ideas for Addamsville sequels, but I don't know if I'll get to make those happen.
If you're interested, I've also written the first three books of The Children of Hypnos from Eliza, and they're available online to read. I plan on finishing all five books, it's just a matter of finding the time!
