Some EH asks!
💖 What's a detail you really love about your OL that you want to talk about more?
💭 Do you have a concept for an OC you haven't been able to use yet?
📜 What's a concept you want to use in an OL but haven't had a chance to yet?
💖 What's a detail you really love about your OL that you want to talk about more?
The Gerudo, honestly -- I absolutely love Amazons, so it was a delight to develop their society further. I wanted to be sure Ganondorf's attitude, weird warrior code, etc. all had a solid basis. So I did a lot of worldbuilding for them behind the scenes, including religion, different religious sects, the role of different religious sects in the civil war that Gan grew up during, their views on children, views on death/what those are based on, the role of men, how the laws on men have changed and evolved (and why they're kind of doomed to soon return to "no boys allowed ever unless we're really impressed by you" in a couple centuries or so), family expectations, honor codes, etc. etc. etc. It all matters -- but a lot of it isn't necessary to include *in* the actual comic, except as-needed. I did include this some more on them in the zine and in the "ToP: Chapter 20 Cut Pages" bonus comic over on Patreon. A lot of the bonus material isn't technically canon -- but those cut pages are 100% canon and I sometimes regret leaving them out of the main comic.
💭 Do you have a concept for an OC you haven't been able to use yet?
Back when I was working on a fanfic that went nowhere, I did have an OC who was Link's friend/older brother figure (sorta like a Pippit character) who was also a Sage denying the call (because he basically didn't understand what it meant... and that was being used against him by the villains). Eventually he became an antagonist. I still think that could be interesting.
📜 What's a concept you want to use in an OL but haven't had a chance to yet?
In the aforementioned fanfic, Maple and the other witches were traveling magic performers, like in a traveling carnival. A magical LoZ carnival with all the different races would be such a fun setting. Oh, and an LoZ murder mystery story where Link is the prime suspect. I had one I had to drop for ToP. ...Maybe a murder mystery at a magical carnival...
Thank you for the asks! :) I haven't thought about that fanfic in a while.

For the EH asks :) 🤔 Are there parts of canon you wanted to pull from in your OL? 🕹 Imagine your OL as a game, do you visualize it as top-down/2D or open world/3D? 🕰 If your OL has a timeline placement, where is it and why did you pick it? 🔺 What's your favorite game? 2️⃣ Second kudos/like/vote
I've answered the first so we'll focus on the others! :)
🕹 Imagine your OL as a game, do you visualize it as top-down/2D or open world/3D?
I was going to say 3D -- but the more I think about it, 2D would be kind of perfect!
🕰 If your OL has a timeline placement, where is it and why did you pick it?
I got this one before but just realized I forgot to answer why I picked the timeline placement! It's because something that'll become clear in the final arc of the story is highly connected to the games that follow it. Can't say anything else for now (though I've had at least a couple readers catch on to what I'm doing...).
🔺 What's your favorite game?
That is so hard to answer. I love both Majora's Mask and Skyward Sword so much, and it's really hard to choose between them because they're *so* different! I think that if Majora's Mask got the proper gorgeously designed remake that it deserves, it'd probably be that. But for now, Skyward Sword's art design, orchestrated music, and gameplay tip the scales in its favor. But seriously, they're both so good!

Thank you! :D

I was interested in more questions than I expected. oh well!
🤔 Are there parts of canon you wanted to pull from in your OL?
🤢 Are there parts of canon you didn't want to pull from or change?
👾 Any interesting twists on existing franchise races or any new ones?
🕰 If your OL has a timeline placement, where is it and why did you pick it? [ETA: or are you a timeline abolitionist or perhaps timeline agnostic]
💪 What's your approach on balancing an OC within a setting?
⌛ Do you prefer to make OCs based on existing fandom characters or totally from scratch?
❤ Favorite trope(s)
💢 Least favorite trope(s)
🤔 Are there parts of canon you wanted to pull from in your OL?
Almost everything in Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword haha. That's how we got a Hyrule that's basically like OoT Hyrule and Ghirahim alive again. Also I would've had even more from Twilight Princess and Majora's Mask if it could make sense in the story world. But there's still quite a lot... and the comic isn't even over yet... I was able to pull in most things I wanted -- though wish I could've found a place for the Ooccoo. They're so incredibly weird and would've been a lot of fun to draw.
🤢 Are there parts of canon you didn't want to pull from or change?
I can't think of anything I specifically didn't want to pull from, because I like pretty much everything in the LoZ games! I knew I wanted Link to have a pleasant personality, as he's such a sweetie in many of the games. Plus the contrast of his pleasant disposition and penchant for chaos is fun.
👾 Any interesting twists on existing franchise races or any new ones?
Honestly I think I stuck pretty to form, especially for the Zoras. Though I do like what I did with the Gerudo, both in fleshing out their society and expanding the world so there are countries south of the Gerudo desert, which interact with the Gerudo.
🕰 If your OL has a timeline placement, where is it and why did you pick it? [ETA: or are you a timeline abolitionist or perhaps timeline agnostic]
Honestly I'm timeline agnostic haha. I think some of the bones of the timeline make sense, but other things don't. I've seen alternative timeline propositions by fans that make a lot more sense and include all the games (even the spinoffs, which impresses me to no end). That being said, I do consider ToP as taking place a very long time after Skyward Sword and a few centuries or so before Ocarina of Time.
💪 What's your approach on balancing an OC within a setting?
I try to ensure that they're completely necessary and aren't taking up more time than needed. For example, if Cia & Lana's mother had little to do in the story, she'd probably only appear in maybe 2-3 pages. But she was an antagonist in the Lake Town story arc, so she had to appear more often. Ganondorf's family are all OCs, but again their involvement is strictly kept to what's absolutely necessary, even though they're really important. (I do have extra stuff with them in the zine though.)
⌛ Do you prefer to make OCs based on existing fandom characters or totally from scratch?
Honestly I'm not familiar with LoZ fandom characters, so from scratch is the way I go :) ...Except Alwin, the Suspiciously-Mustached-Yet-Honest Magician. His inspiration is a little different, but I can't really talk about that yet.
❤ Favorite trope(s)
Hard, since almost any trope can be my favorite if it's executed right! A few that come to mind are:
Unrequited Love
Jerk With a Heart of Gold
Idiot Hero
A Boy and His X
Did We Just Have Tea with Cthulhu?
Hero Does Public Service
💢 Least favorite trope(s)
Is there a trope for girls always being catty to each other and being unable to form positive female friendships -- so all their most important/positive relationships are with guys? Because I hate that.

💡 How'd you come up with Triforce of Power?
🧝♂️ What's your favorite trait to play with in an OC Link?
🐗 What's you're favorite trait to play with in an OC Ganon?

💡 How'd you come up with Triforce of Power?
Back in ye olden times of 2014 when I was planning the comic, there were almost zero Zelda fancomics. But they did sometimes have Ganondorf as a protagonist. So, it was basically me thinking about the type of Ganondorf-led LoZ comic I'd enjoy creating, inspired by the Wind Waker 4-Koma comics 😊 Plus, I'd played a lot of LoZ and had a lot about the games I wanted to poke fun at. The story just grew from there!
🧝♂️ What's your favorite trait to play with in an OC Link?
Rather than one trait, it's more the balance of him as a person and him as a video game character. It's been a lot of fun mixing his own personal history in the comic's world, how Link's personality is presented in the games, and lastly how I play the games. Honestly I feel like you could play with these three elements and get a huge variety of widely differing results, which is really neat!
🐗 What's you're favorite trait to play with in an OC Ganon?
I personally feel like if he completely loses his edge, he wouldn't be a Ganon anymore -- but he still needed to grow as a character (especially since he's the protagonist). And I chose to have his relationship with Link and some other characters improve in the story so far. So it's been fun trying to make him nicer without being TOO nice. A couple things that are really helpful with this are having him follow a Gerudo warrior code, which doesn't always make sense morally -- also, he's a lying liar who lies.

Thank you kindly! That makes me so happy to hear!
The @lozpositivityproject is such a cool idea ☺️ Go give it a look if you haven't yet!
I cannot recommend the Triforce of Power comic over at @nayru-s-clay-tablet enough. Their Link is well balanced between the type of character the games story implies VS the kind of shenanigans a player actually gets up to and this is the source of many great jokes but the story is also really good- pulling characters and ideas from many different games but ultimately telling an original story.

Finishing the completed sticker designs above is part of what made me interested in doing ToP physical merch -- so they're sort of a rough idea of what ToP stickers might look like 🙂
Also, if you were interested in the Kickstarter when I mentioned it earlier, now is the perfect time to check it out, share it, etc.! We're lucky to have gotten this far and it'd be amazing if we reached our goal.
Not gonna lie, learning that our books were used to train AI takes the wind out of my sails a bit. Almost all ebooks get pirated/ posted online for free. If people pirate to read, it is theft... but at least the book is still serving its intended purpose of being read.
When people steal your work to make something they make money off of... it's like a weird perversion, on top of being theft. Basically, it's a scummy thing to do.
Stealing to train an AI you profit off of puts you in the same illustrious category as scam artists -- who are equally notorious for having no guilt and no shame, no matter who gets screwed over.
Reminder that our audiobook Kickstarter is still ongoing! We are only 22% funded with 13 days to go, but I still believe that if this project gets shared that we can make it. If anyone you know loves YA fantasy books, send them our way!
Sadly, I learned that most of our books were pirated and used train AI against our will and knowledge. But we're fighting back by saying no to AI voices and say YES to using real human narrators!
All of the artworks you see of the stickers, the art prints, and the book covers were created by human artists as well, including my co-author @mcaquila, @drawingsworth, and @praise-the-lord-im-dead

Hi! I just read through your entire comic and I loved it! Is there a reason your design for Ghirahim has dark eyes and white pupils instead of fully white eyes like in the game?
Thank you, I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed it! 😊
And yes, it's basically another sign of his powers being depleted. Once he's back to full strength, his eyes will go back to normal! ....Plus I needed his eyes to look all dark and creepy for the Redead gag when he first popped up haha
