Asian dramas and relationship dynamics (Pt.1)
There are my favorite relationship dynamics as a list. Opposites attract + power couple
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: I Am Nobody /  异人之下 Characters: Zhuge Qing & Wang Ye Screentime: Minor I like it when characters are different in a way they could complement one another, but at the same time they are similar in terms of what is important for people to stay stuck together. Zhuge Qing is public, easy-going and wants to be friends with Wang Ye. Wang Ye is mysterious, reflexive and doesn't want to be bothered by other people. But no one can beat extrovert if he decided to be friends with you =) Plus, they are united by their superpowers: they are both powerful sorcerers and their sorcery is very similar in its nature. So they can compete and learn from each other and, if necessary, kick enemy's ass together. ̶A̶n̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶i̶r̶ ̶d̶y̶n̶a̶m̶i̶c̶s̶ ̶h̶a̶s̶ ̶g̶o̶t̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶c̶k̶ ̶B̶L̶ ̶v̶i̶b̶e̶s.̶ By the end of season 1 they are OK and together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: Mysterious Lotus Casebook / 莲花楼 Characters: Di Feisheng & Li Lianhua Screentime: Secondary Di Feisheng is a leader of a demonic sect, a former slave and a very straightforward man. Li Lianhua is a former leader of a righteous sect and an extremely sly man with not-so-bad background. But both of them are the best martial artists in Jianghu and went through a lot together. One wants everyone to leave him alone, another wants to be with him together forever. Both of them don't give a damn about everything that happens in the world but they care for each other. B̶L̶-̶v̶i̶b̶e̶s̶ ̶a̶r̶e̶ ̶a̶t̶t̶a̶c̶h̶e̶d̶.̶ The ending of the drama is obscure but I'd like to think they both are alive and happy together.
Tumblr media
Drama: The Blood of Youth / 少年歌行 Characters: Xiao Se & Ye Anshi Screentime: Secondary A leader of a demonic sect who has an ultimate martial knowledge and a former best righteous martial artist, who is suffering from decease and can't fight anymore. What can unite them? The answer is: the similar mindset. They both had a great power and lost it, they both are shouldering great responsibilities which don't make them happy. Despite the fact that they should be on the opposite sides in Jianghu world, they are still good friends. M̶a̶y̶b̶e̶ ̶B̶L̶-̶f̶r̶i̶e̶n̶d̶s̶,̶ ̶a̶l̶t̶h̶o̶u̶g̶h̶ ̶X̶i̶a̶o̶ ̶S̶e̶ ̶h̶a̶s̶ ̶a̶ ̶g̶i̶r̶l̶f̶r̶i̶e̶n̶d̶.̶ There is a small extra ep at the end of drama, when they meet each other again in a very romantic way. Just search for it.
Tumblr media
Drama: The Legends / 招摇 Characters: Lu Shiqi & Qin Qianxian Screentime: Minor She is from a demonic sect. He is from a righteous one. She is immune to the impact of spiritual power. He is the one of the most powerful people in terms of spiritual power. She is dumb, straightforward and pure-hearted. He is blissed yet sensible and burdened with difficult moral choices. They could be an ideal Yin-Yang couple. But they have BE, because it's "The Legends", everyone should die in here Т_Т.
Pride and Prejudice + power couple
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity / 晴雅集 Characters: Bo Ya & Qing Ming Screentime: Main This dynanics is similar with the previous one, but here we are focused on how they ended up together. Bo Ya has prejudice against demons-yao and believes all of them should be executed. He meets half-demon-sorcerer Qing Ming who helps him to overcome his prejudice. Finally, they become friends (or̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶b̶e̶ ̶n̶o̶t̶ ̶o̶n̶l̶y̶ ̶f̶r̶i̶e̶n̶d̶s̶) and together they win over the evil forces. At the end they are separated but there is a hope they meet again.
Tumblr media
Drama: Wuliang / 无量 Characters: Po Xiao & Feng Ren Screentime: Main People of different social status both seek to get a magical sutra. During a road trip they exchange opinions on the sutra and how to use it and change each other's mind. In the end it turns out that they together saved the world and can be finally together. As friends, of course.
Tumblr media
Drama: Oh No! Here Comes Trouble / 不良執念清除師 Characters: Pu Yiyong & Cao Guangyan Screentime: Main Pu Yiyong looks like lowlife, studies very bad and hates Cao Guangyan, who is self-confident, smart and thinks low of Pu Yiyong. But a mysterious case with ghosts forces them to interact and they find out, that together they are a perfect team. Honestly speaking, this little series couldn't develop this topic as good as I hoped, but it's a really interesting story, so you can watch it for the ghost detective plot and get this type of relationship in addition. It's a Taiwanese drama, so BL-jokes and dalliance with a viewer were huge, but it didn`t help much. Still a nice dynamics and a good drama. Us vs the World
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: The Untamed / 陈情令 Characters: Wei Wuxian & Lan Wangji Screentime: Main I don`t like the novel, but I like drama exactly because here I can see this dynamics. In the past life of Wei Wuxiang Lan Wangji was not strong enough to go against the whole world to protect his friend (well, in the novel they are lovers, but it kills the main idea of this dynamics by turning it into "I do it all just to get into your bed", which is meh), and his friend died. Suddenly, 16 years later, he gets a chance to choose once more: to be a part of society and watch once more his friend dying or to be with him against everyone this time. The moment he chooses to be with Wei Wuxian against the whole world I felt cathartic pleasure. The drama ends up on a little bit obscure but positive note.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drama: Word of Honor / 山河令 Characters: Zhou Zishu & Wen Kexing Screentime: Main A former king's assassin who is at the brink of death and just wants to live the time left in silence and a birdy master of the most skillful criminals find each other, find out that they are brothers-in-teachings and decide to fight against the world together just to live in silence and enjoy each other's company. When one thinks it's his last second of life, the other comes to help him even if they both can't beat the greater number of enemies and will die for sure. Catharsis! The drama has a small extra ep where they are together and all right.
Tumblr media
Drama: The Legends / 招摇 Characters: Li Chenlan & Lu Zhaoyao Screentime: Main Them, again! The first half of the drama they have enemies-to-lovers dynamics, but then, when they find out the truth about Zhao Yao's death and about feelings for each other, they turn into Bonny and Clyde and go annihilate the righteous guys who are in fact not-so-righteous. And it makes me feel cathartic, too. A very catharsis-causing dynamics, indeed! It's little obscure, but they will be fine at the end of the drama.
Tumblr media
Drama: Dong Lan Xue / 东栏雪 Characters: Shen Yan & Chu Ningyuan Screentime: Main Two bad guys work together to get power in the palace. And get involved in romantic relationship during their power gaining. Nice story with an open ending.
Tumblr media
Drama: Derailment /脱轨 Characters: Qi Lian & Jiang Xiaoyuan Screentime: Main It's a little story inside a big one about transmigrators that you can read in another of my posts. It lasts something like 1,5 eps of the drama but is a nice story itself. A lonely bellicose boy from a rich family runs away from home where no one cares for him and lives on the street. A lonely girl from an extremely poor family and being bullied by classmates tries to survive in this world. They meet each other and understand that it's easier to fight their fate together. Nice story, it's a pity that this one is too short and not a main plot of the drama.
The next post will be about Asian dramas and familial dynamics. Also you can see: Asian dramas and relationship dynamics (Pt. 2) Asian dramas and my favorite types of characters Asian dramas and Love tropes Enemies to Rivals/Lovers recipe

so in my ap lit class today we were discussing fences by august wilson and in the play there is a character named Gabriel. He served in WWII, sustained an injury and is left disabled as a result. His disability also helps pay for Troy’s (the main character) house. You get the vibe from the play that Troy loves his brother but mostly sees him as a burden. When people in my little discussion group was asked what we thought of Gabriel one girl went “he’s cute!”
okay first of all, that is dehumanizing and infantilizing to call a grown ass man with a disability cute. He’s not a child, he is a veteran of a war and he is quite literally paying for their house. Through the play he is constantly seen by both his family and the law as a nuisance. Disabled people are not a burden nor a nuisance. Disabled people are fucking people and they deserve to be respected as their own person.

Play for Today: Bar Mitzvah Boy (BBC, 1976)
"At this moment, on their way, are a hundred and seventeen guests. Sitting on the train, in cars, queuing for buses - all on their way. At half past six, Victor, a hundred and seventeen people from Bournemouth, from Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow, from Birmingham, everywhere... are going to turn up at the Reuben Shulman Hall expecting a dinner dance. All dressed up. Your Uncle Zalman, my cousin Freda. Your brother we don't talk about from Cardiff."
"Don't upset yourself."
"A hundred and seventeen people. A hundred and seventeen portions of chopped liver. A hundred and seventeen mushroom vol-au-vents. A hundred and seventeen chicken with croquette potatoes and helzel, French beans and coleslaw. A hundred and seventeen lokshen kugels. A four-piece band. No bar mitzvah boy. No bar mitzvah. No nothing."
#play for today#Bar mitzvah boy#jack rosenthal#Single play#Modern drama#BBC#1976#Michael Tuchner#Jeremy Steyn#Maria Charles#Bernard Spear#Adrienne Posta#Jonathan Lynn#Cyril Shaps#Jack Lynn#Pamela Manson#Harry Landis#Kim Clifford#Mark Herman#Harold Reese#absolutely one of Jack's warmest and wittiest scripts. having been frustrated by the casting of non jewish actors in his previous PfT The#Evacuees‚ Jack put his foot down on this play and it benefits from collecting some of the best jewish character actors then active in uk#stage and screen into one play. particularly wonderful are Spear and Maria Charles as the parents intent on making their son's bar mitzvah#a day to remember: her sporting a truly awe inspiring helmet of hair‚ he willing the day to have come and gone so that everything can#return to normal. there's a sharp satirical study of middle class aspirationism and the inadequacy of bar mitzvah as a standard of manhood#(all the adult male characters display various immaturities throughout the play) but it's all done with a very deep and very real affection#special mention to perennial fave Cyril Shaps (adorable as the doting if slightly air headed grandfather; actually Shaps was younger than#Spear‚ his onscreen son‚ but had always appeared older than his years) and Posta in a finely judged performance as the older sister whose#sharpness and short temper doesn't mask her love and sense of responsibility for a younger sibling who's quietly terrified about the#prospect of growing up. the dialogue is pin sharp and often laugh out loud funny‚ but there's some nice background stuff going on as well

Do any of you have Opheliamachine by Magda Romanska in English, in digital form?
Would like to use it for one of my papers at the end of this semester and maybe even for my thesis but I can't find it anywhere. I only found a copy of it that's getting released in February, 2024.... 🥲

OP: Check out. The fully-sexual charged cinematic movement design.
Cnetizens: How did the director come up with the idea to have him kneel on a playing card, adding so much aesthetic energy, is that some kind of genius?

#china#cdramas#dramas#lmao#They are siblings and they're discussing serious matters#this scene is actually rather heavy because the younger brother is involved in drug trafficking#carrying more than 50 grams of heroin will result in a death sentence in china let alone being involved in drug trafficking#the older brother is a gangster king#but even he doesn't dare to get involved in the drug business because it will bring about the demise of his family#sorry for digression I mean how did the director make this scene which has absolutely nothing to do with sex#so sexually charged?#btw there're many posts with rich information about China's crackdown on drug crimes on xhs and douyin#especially about how the four major drug-trafficking families in Myanmar were wiped out overnight#they buried undercover Chinese counter-narcotics police alive and kidnapped and brutally excuted civilians#so if you're interested you can go with the key words 缅甸四大家族覆灭 on xhs and douyin#cnetizens' views on drugs are related to modern Chinese history#the first chapter of modern history in high school textbooks is the opium wars#There's a very dark joke on xhs about which country in the world would least like China to withdraw from the P5#and the answer is the UK#because it's in the first chapter of China's modern history#the Destruction of opium at Humen in 1839#no offence but Breaking Bad can't last for more than one episode if it happens in china because of the sewer detection technology#they can detect the tiniest amount of drugs in feces in a body of water the size of a lake for up to six months#which can be quickly locked down to neighbourhoods and portals#Once a foreigner was caught smuggling and selling 222.035 kg drugs in China and sentenced to death with two other Chinese associates#his country's prime minister asked for his extradition#cnetizens commented that there was an opium war and he still dare to come to China to sell drugs be like 找死court death#All the above information is to explain the gangster king's attitude towards his brother's drug business

Roach: *walks into the rec room in a massive hoodie*
Gaz, staring at the hoodie: That confirms it
Roach: Confirms what?
Soap: That you’re dating König
Roach: Dati- I am NOT! Why the fuck do you think I’m dating KorTac’s colonel?!
Ghost: You’re wearing a outlandishly large hoodie with the Austrian flag on the back
Roach: IT’S FOR FOOTBALL
Ghost: You don’t even like football! And why the fuck would you support Austria over England?!
Gaz: Roach, just admit you’re dating König
Roach: I’M NOT
Soap: Oh my god- Gary! Stop playing around!
Price, walking in: What’s with the yelling?
Ghost: Roach’s denying that he’s dating Colonel König
Price: He’s not though
Roach: THANK YOU-
Price: They’re friends with benefits
Gaz, Ghost, & Soap: *immediately start losing their shit*
Roach: WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU TELL THEM THAT?!

Barty crouch jr who’s a disowned trust fund baby who still gets a monthly allowance from his mommy and invests in tech stocks probably and lives in a huge ass apartment in a nice building but it’s literally not furnished at all and he never cleans it ever and he spends most of his time on high on his pc and he’s got the gamer sleeper bod with pierced nipples and belly button and the worlds sluttiest hip bones and happy trail under his stained sweat pants and the most dead eyes under his scraggly hair that’s in desperate need of a haircut he doesn’t feel like getting but he’s getting a new tat at least once a month and they’re usually from himself because he bought a tattoo gun online but doesn’t have a license to tattoo others and he literally only goes outside to club and drink and visit his mommy because what else is there to do and he doesn’t even try to make friends or start relationships because he doesn’t care about people and why should he why does it matter and he’s literally just the most burnt out loser you ever did see but he gets away with literally everything because he’s rich and pretty
Evan Rosier who’s just another middle child in a pond of siblings to parents who have never tried to look at him so they don’t notice at all when he leaves with a shit load of their money and never comes back and they’d give him more if he asked to keep him out of the house but he would rather die than do that so he immediately gets into the shitty office pencil pushing Patrick Bateman type shit that his father and oldest brothers did but in a business that wasn’t just handed to him so he can feel like he’s made his money and therefore his life himself and he lives the rest of his life that way with a grind set around hours spent in the gym and specialized diets and crisp tasteful fashion and very demure stoic presentation of himself to the world and actively cuts himself off from everyone around him because of the mindset he gave himself through this life style that everyone is below him and waisting his time so he literally doesn’t have friends or family and barely says any words or feels anything everyday but no one can see that because he’s too far away to make out and too good at painting a picturesque image of himself for anyone to try because he’s rich and pretty
Regulus Black who has never lived for himself and isn’t starting now so he ignores the voice in his head reminding him he’s a boy and chokes it to sleep every night with his long hair and flowing dress skirts and tries to assert that by marrying the rich family friend that raised him more than his own parents (who barely even looked his way during his own wedding that they planned) right when he turns seventeen and locks himself away in the perfect white house his husband made for him and keeps trying to nail on the mask of being the perfect little wife but he just cant and goes stir crazy and obsessive and is a nightmare to be around during his rising amounts of emotional breakdowns and if it were a hundred years ago he’d probably get lobotomized but it’s not a hundred years ago so his husband (Rabastan if you couldn’t guess) tries to distract him by funding some pity studies and encouraging him to go to an old and privileged college for useless degrees he’s only getting so he’s too worn out to start fights at home but it works and keeps him civil and mostly empty and comfortable enough to continue to be a half dead powdered and pretty wife that can continue to float through life with literally no one in his life sticking around through his tantrums and bone deep issues except his husband who wants him to stay that way for convenience and everyone is h the outside looking in thinks he’s just perfect and mysterious because he’s rich and pretty
Literally just the unholy trinity in a modern, nonmagical setting as the worst versions of themselves in a context we know: closed off rich young people who are bubbling with hate but too depressed to really do anything about it and too rich and privileged to have to so they genuinely believe what they have must be good and not in need of change because they have it all right?
Anyway then one day they meet and they feel alive for the first time ever maybe and smooch and stuff woo modern rich pretty douchebag romance.
I just need something like that, soemthing that showcases their flaws and genuine awfulness without sugarcoating it but in turn shows how their love for one another genuinely brings out the best in them. Just like remembering that they’re messy bitches but their love trumps all like actually. And who cares, they look fantastic together and they have enough to own your entire bloodline, there is nothing you can do about anything they do.

Susannah: Yes. Yes, he did risk himself. We all did. A lot of it... OK, a bit half-assed but at least... some of it will stick! You have to try. It's not going to work any more, running for the same old burrows... we're rafting off into space - God! Frank sees it. He said to me one day, 'Suse... you know what's going to do for us all? Not the failure of intellect, moral, muscle - but the failure of imagination! They're all too busy with their snouts in the trough to smell the fire.'
Crystal: Yeah, he says some really daft things.

Pam Gems, Loving Women (1984)
#100plays#pam gems#loving women#modern drama#theatre quotes#1984#Gems was known best for her adaptations of older works and for her biographical plays (including the phenomenally successful Piaf in 1978)#but she consistently produced original work too‚ tho with less commercial success. this comes from her middle period and is often described#as a comedy about a love triangle; which it is‚ really‚ but that somehow feels like a dismissive way to describe a play that can just as#often raise challenging questions about the nature of activism and social change‚ the complicated way that personal relationships and#polemical discourse can influence one another‚ and the inadequacy of passion alone (both in love and in politics) without a solid#foundation. neatly split into three sections at different points in the characters' lives‚ the first and third might more easily be#described as romantic comedy; the majority of the second scene‚ however‚ is a vicious argument between idealists at odds (or a#revolutionary and a lapsed revolutionary‚ maybe). our three characters are Frank‚ an activist social worker who has recently (at the#beginning of the play) suffered a nervous breakdown‚ his radical coworker and lover Susanne‚ and Crystal‚ the working class hairdresser who#has agreed to nurse Frank in return for a roof over her head. the first scene sets up the love triangle and suggests the disharmony to come#but it is the second scene‚ one year later (and with Frank having left Susanne for Crystal‚ apparently without even breaking up face to#face) (Susannah! sorry not sure why i keep writing Susanne); anyway this is the standout scene‚ a furious showdown between the newly#domesticated Frank and the woman he spurned. there is personal enmity on Susannah's part of course‚ as well as entirely reasonable#frustration at how Frank handled the affair‚ but the argument quickly becomes centred on issues of political dogma‚ his perceived betrayal#of 'the cause' (as well as her) and what he perceives as her naivety and tunnel vision in approaching the work they once shared#it is a shamelessly intellectual segment‚ full of angry‚ verbose tirades on the state of the nation and the futility or necessity of#radical action and subversive agitation‚ sparkling dialogue that demands to be spat with venom (and contrasted completely by a much gentler#meeting between the 2 characters a decade later in the final scene). part of Gem's beauty‚ tho‚ is that she never entirely loses the humour#of the piece‚ allowing for amusing asides like the one above (Crystal enters and leaves several times throughout the argument‚ clearly#uncomfortable with the situation). on the surface it might seem like Crystal is a mildly patronising character‚ unable to keep up with the#idealogical slant of the conversation‚ but as Frank makes clear‚ in many ways she's the most real of the three of them; not having the#privileged middle class background of the others‚ her seeming disinterest in revolution is borne of necessity‚ the necessity of first#staying alive (ie. feeding herself‚ finding a roof to sleep under‚ etc) leaving her little time to engage in the largely theoretical#grandstanding of the two socialists she's fallen in with.
