Answering the Gotham Character Questionnaire for my OCs!! (OKAQM)

These are a few things about the characters I wrote about when answering the Gotham Character Questionnaire. The characters I've written about are Alistair, Brian, Destiny, Elsie and Winnie. If y'all are curious, these are my OCs from my fanfiction One Kiss and a Quidditch Match. Here's the Prologue! Enjoy!

What is your character’s name? Does the character have a nickname?

Alistair’s full name is Alistair Campbell. Elsie calls him by his last name, Winnie refers to him as “my brother” but never his name and his ex, Destiny, called him Puddings.

Elsie is her nickname; Elizabeth Marie Wilson is her full name, which she dislikes because of how basic it is.

Brian’s name is very simple: Brian Ashmore. He despises nicknames, especially when he gets teased because of his burn. Kids used to call him Bacon because of it.

Winnie’s full name is Winifred Campbell, but since it’s odd, she goes by a more fun, cuter nickname: Winnie.

Destiny White doesn’t have a nickname, but Alistair used to call her Babe (basic ass mf).

What is your character’s hair colour? Eye colour?

Alistair's hair is black, but he dyes it bright red. Currently, it’s duller red with his roots showing. He has brown eyes like Winnie.

Elsie has a dark brown French bob — which she keeps out of her face with bobby pins. Her eyes are sharp and golden brown.

Brian’s hair is ashy blonde and covers his green eyes, giving him a rather sombre look.

Winnie’s hair is black and frizzy, and she often debates whether she should tie it up or leave it down.

Destiny’s honey-blonde hair is straight, but she curls it to make it look nice. However, when she doesn’t have the time, it’s tied in a low, loose ponytail. Her eyes are blue, and her lashes are long.

What kind of distinguishing facial features does your character have?

Alistair has pretty face syndrome. His face is wide, and his jaw is strong. None of his features are particularly distinguishing, but his smile is rather charming, and it doesn’t stop him from attracting others.

Elsie’s face is sharp and cold. She is pale, and freckles scatter her cheeks.

Brian has an ashen, gaunt face that could be described as corpse-like and would have been unconditionally handsome if not for the burn scar on the left side of his jaw. He used to hate and hide it but now carries little shame. He has dimples but rarely smiles.

Winnie looks like the sweetest out of the friend group, with chubby cheeks and a mole at the corner of her left eye.

Destiny, like Alistair, has pretty face syndrome. She is beautiful, tan and popular. Her doll-like lips are her defining feature.

Does your character have a birthmark? Where is it? What about scars? How did they get them?

Alistair has a few scars from fights with other kids and sports.

Elsie has a birthmark on the back of her neck in between her shoulders and another on her upper thigh.

Brian has a scar, as mentioned above. He got it in Potions class during his third year when someone surprised him when he was holding a vial of acid. He jolted, and the liquid jumped out of its container and onto his face.

Winnie has a scar on her stomach because of surgery.

Destiny has vitiligo on her forearms that shows when she tans.

Who are your character’s friends and family? Who do they surround themselves with? Who are the people your character is closest to?

Alistair and Winnie are twins. He is the younger and the favourite of the family. He is friends with most students at the school but hangs out with the gang. When he isn’t with them, he is with Roman and Ziggy. They’ve grown rather close after the Spin the Bottle game at the party. He loves his dad a lot but prefers his mom.

Elsie’s little brother was called Bobby. He died of cancer when she was 14 and — you may think this is silly — wears her hair in a bob with bobby pins to remember him. She hangs with the gang and isn’t really close to anyone else until the party. She was best friends with Ramona until she roomed with Winnie, Mary and Avery.

Brian is an only child and a total mama’s boy. He has a stepdad called Josh and is thinking of adding his mom’s last name to his own to make it Wilson-Green. He is closest to the MC and Elsie.

Winnie’s the eldest of the group as Alistair’s older sister. She loves and admires her dad who only has eyes for her brother, which she notices but hides. She is closest to the MC. They (ERROR: Text contains spoiler and could not be loaded) . She is friends with most people and can’t hold a grudge for long. She’s liked (SPOILER) and (SPOILER) since 5th year. She used to be best friends with Mary when they were toddlers.

Destiny is the middle child with a big brother, a little brother and a younger sister. She is the babysitter for them. She hangs with her unnamed clique and knows Ramona and Avery from a Summer camp in Germany.

Where was your character born? Where have they lived since then? Where do they call home?

Alistair and Winnie were born during a family trip to Lochalsh, Scotland. They travel with relatives during holidays but have always lived in the UK, which is where they feel closest emotionally.

Like the twins, Elsie was born and raised in the United Kingdom. However, she has only been to two other countries for vacations.

Brian was born when his mom was in her senior year of High School, as an exchange student in Russia. His biological dad was one of the students at the Russian school and got Brian’s mom pregnant when they were dating. But when he discovered her secret, he left her, ultimately leaving Brian fatherless. In his entire life, he has never met his dad and is grateful. Shortly after his birth, his mom had to go back to the UK and he’s been living there ever since.

Destiny was born in Australia. Her mom is Australian, while her dad is British. Her family lived in multiple places when she was younger, including Japan, Indonesia, and France. They only settled in the UK when Destiny’s older brother, Fate (yeah, her parents really did that).

Where does your character go when they're angry?

Alistair is very toxic in the manner in which he handles anger. When he gets annoyed, he gaslights, gatekeeps, girlbosses his way out of there. Victim blaming and lying are in there, too. But when he’s really angry, he shouts. He got it from his dad. Alistair wants everyone to hear the drama, especially if it paints him in a good light. This rarely happens, though.

She is often irritated and bickers with the other person, attempting to prove a point. When she is angry, it causes her to cry, and she hates it, so she will leave the situation.

Brian never gets mad. When he does (which is never) he tries to control his emotions and comes off as cold.

Winnie though… She is a ray of sunshine, but get her mad, and she will make you regret it. It's actually jarring to see such a sunny person suddenly switch to an ice-cold human being. Oh, and she can punch really well despite her shortness.

Destiny gets bright red when she is angry and tries to calm down. It ruins her mood for the entire day, though, despite her attempts at hiding it.

What is their biggest fear? Who have they told this to? Who would they never tell this to? Why? 

Alistair has a phobia of needles. He hasn’t told anyone, but Winnie is aware of it since she’s his twin. He feels that if he reveals his secret, he will be seen as weak for being afraid of something so small, not realising his fear is rather common.

Elsie is afraid of being vulnerable. She hates it when all of her emotions are on display for others to see. It makes her feel inferior to everyone and it’s why she feels the need to hide behind an aggressive mask. She hasn’t told anyone because she doesn’t really realise it about herself either, but her friends, especially Brian, Winnie and the MC are aware of it. She also has a fear of heights — which she has told her friends — but it’s less bad.

Brian, like Elsie, has a fear of the public. However, for him, it’s more of the humiliation that he is afraid of. He is scared of the mockery he faced in his 3rd year for his scar. So, like Elsie, he puts up a cold mask to hide it. He is aware of this fear and has discussed it with the Professors and his friend group. He is also afraid of burns, specifically acid, and it causes him to observe a lot of liquid he is being handed in fear of burning himself.

Winnie has a fear of needles like her brother. She is also terrified of being singled out in a crowd where she is unprepared for the spotlight (ex: her secret is revealed). But her biggest problem is thalassophobia — the fear of the deep ocean. Since she is so trusting, she admits her thalassophobia to people who ask about it, but she would never tell anyone who is manipulative or doesn’t feel safe around.

Destiny has arachnophobia and coulrophobia — fear of clowns. Since she was a kid, she hated them, and having a dumbass older brother didn’t help. Since arachnophobia is really common, she admits to having it to pretty much anyone who asks, but only directly told her closest friends. She tends to downplay her coulrophobia and pass it off as a simple uncomfortableness around them. This is because she is still discovering herself and thinks it’s silly to fear clowns.

Do they have a secret?

They all have secrets but revealing them would spoiler the story.

When has your character been in love? Had a broken heart?

When has your character been in love? Had a broken heart? Unlike what people may think, Alistair has never been in love. He has certainly found people attractive and had crushes, but he never felt something as powerful as real love. He tends to get over breakups easily since he’s had so many. The closest this he’s ever had to heartbreak was with his first real, official girlfriend in Year 2.

Elsie rarely falls in love, but when she likes someone, she falls hard. Like she did with Alistair. Contrary to their usual bickering moments, he can be really nice and helpful, and slowly, Elsie just…fell for him. For his smile, for his laugh, for his confidence. But he wasn’t into her, and that was her first heartbreak. Not only did he not like her, but he also didn’t find her attractive. Read Chapter 2.

Brian is Aro/Ace and has never fallen in love before.

I can’t talk about Winnie because it contains a lot of spoilers, but y’all will find out near the end of the story.

Destiny, like Alistair, has had multiple relationships, but she actually felt romantic connections with her partners and genuinely experienced heartbreak when they were no longer together. It was the same when she was with Alistair. Sure, their relationship didn’t last as long as some of her others, but she still really liked him. Destiny saw it coming. He was known as some sort of a “playboy” and had many girlfriends in the past, so she expected him to do something scandalous. It still hurt when he kissed the other girl with the same flame he used to kiss her.

i agree with your takes on dragon age's relationship with queer content a lot. a straight female inquisitor (bonus point if elf) gets the most romance options, zevran and leliana's romance feels secondary *by narrative* compared to romances of characters who's a warden/king alistair and morrigan, sebastian being bisexual being a cut content*

* i just don't get it why the templar boys always got to be straight. like why can't men engage with their romances and experience this narrative when chantry and religion is so important for the story of these games? after all romance adds a different perspective for all characters.

here we have veilguard, the pansexual crew, and well... the romance content is the weakest in franchise

and i'm not saying queer romances were bad btw!! its just that i wish people who wants to play mlm or wlw get to see such perspectives in the story or these characters' stories too. like a male warden romancing alistair and all the juicy stuff that comes with it (the hurt or angst or the complications. are you sparing loghain? did you just marry the love of your life off to his sister-in-law for the future of your beloved country? did he become a drunkard visiting bars after bars because of the decisions you made even tough you were intimate?)

no exactly! i do tend to want to give them some slack given they're very Of Their Time (for a 2009 game even including bisexual options was scandalous, and dorian's bare bones coming out narrative was pretty standard for 2013 tv shows / rare in aaa games) but it annoys me when people act like they're these flawless beacons of queer rep that you can't criticise just because we should be happy with being given anything at all. even if you don't count seb, 1/2 of the games pretty much require you to play an f/m relationship in order to experience a narratively relevant relationship. i find dai more insidious tbh because like... sure, don't make solas bi for whatever reasons you want to give. but cass and blackwall? there's 0 reason for them to be straight lol. (especially the bait and switch where you're allowed to flirt with cass as a woman for AGES before she turns you down despite characters like cullen shutting you down on the first flirt. it's funny when you do it intentionally but just feels cruel otherwise?) at least leliana and zevran feel like they're doing the most they were allowed to do

a gay or bisexual chantry/templar character who struggles with their sexuality would be SO interesting. honestly it would require more introspection about thedas' attitude towards sexuality than da has ever done - i feel like they could have done a fun subplot with this in da2 honestly.

and the thing about the dav characters is... they went to great lengths to make sure they avoided the playersexual allegations, multiple characters had a past where they dated people of various genders, taash having a preference for women was mentioned (in the weirdest way possible) but i still... don't know how they feel about their sexuality at all? neve is a tevinter mage, did her liking women play a part in her seeing through the issues with the system? does bellara have any lingering feelings about irelin at all? did harding realise she didn't have to be straight when she joined the inquisition and met people outside of her small ferelden town? (potential extra dialogue for an f/f romancing inquisitor???) it doesn't need to be a big Thing, but just a one-off dialogue during romance (davrin m/m exclusive dialogue on your date: "the first time i brought a man to meet my uncle i was so nervous etc etc") or a comment during a banter. it just establishes a little bit more about the characters and stops them feeling so flat... then again ig that's an issue with the whole game LOL.

homophobia banter highlight reel i guess. shoutout to seb for making it on here because varric has something deeply wrong with him and is exclusively homophobic to the one of like two not openly bisexual people in his friend group

in general my point is that like. this was homophobic. if people didnt. uh. clock that oghren’s violent reactions and references to manskirt-wearing freaks were that. i’m using oghren as my main example because he’s the most overt. (generally orzammar’s dedication to lineage throughout the castes seems to give it more rigid gender and sexuality roles; there’s also significantly more overt sexism.) with zev and anders, it’s also compounded by fantasy racism and prejudice, in particular that male elves and male mages are both seen as effeminate in southern thedas. this isn’t just oghren. uh, for example, if a male hawke romances anders or fenris, gamlen, who iirc is as directly homophobic as it gets in da2, will make the comment “i guess i don’t have to ask which one of you’s the girl”. he’ll also make a fetishising comment about female hawke and isabela

otherwise. uh what might people not have clocked. zevran only flirts with a female warden in his introductory scene, due to his real, not unfounded concern that it will make a male warden more uncomfortable with him and, let’s not put too fine a point on it, thus more likely to kill him. zevran’s discussion of being bisexual himself is incredibly loaded and as i recall involves a fair bit of internalised something. from my delvings into the toolset, if you romance him as a man, you seem to have countless opportunities to break off the relationship specifically saying it’s because you’re both men and you can’t do this, including as late as the second time he offers you the earring. generally the male warden romancing zevran has a lot of internalised homophobia coded dialogue options when you ask him about his sexuality and when others ask you about the relationship—you can express dismay that zevran has told anyone, for example, while asking leliana not to say anything—and it’s fairly heavily implied that you’re likely to be more unfamiliar with such things

with anders, the most glaring example off the top of my head is that he doesn’t tell female hawkes about karl. a lot of the gendered differences in the anders romances are from homophobia/biphobia on a writing level as well, but considering that we’re not buying into “playersexual” nonsense i think it’s also fair to read this in-world as anders choosing not to bring that up to a woman who’s interested in him/someone he doesn’t know he has this in common with. the dialogue again treats anders as more experienced and gives male hawkes the opportunity to act surprised/uncertain even when they are the one to flirt first

this is basically just. if you didn’t clock that, that’s going on here! in general, heterosexuality is an assumed norm in thedas, and particularly characters coded as andrastian and fairly naive/inexperienced like alistair or bethany will express surprise or confusion about it and not pick up on implications. particularly noble characters will be expected to continue bloodlines and make political unions, for example, the inability of a female warden to marry anora or a male warden to marry alistair, even though it’s possible to do the m/f version of those political marriages without any kind of romance. that’s a pragmatic concern about the succession in a world that values bloodlines and thus comes with a certain heteronormativity. at the same time, there’s not so deep a stigma as you might expect if directly translating from our world, so to speak; it’s much more about the hope of continuing families and the importance of that in this world than there seeming to be any kind of explicit religious stigma? although it should be noted that the andrastian story focuses on andraste and the maker in what is treated as an m/f marriage and might be considered an ideal

for example, leandra will make an offhand, semi-teasing comment about finding hawke an opposite gender spouse, which i think is her hope of hawke managing to settle into kirkwall noble society and continue the family line when there is, in most worldstates, little to no hope of the other surviving hawke sibling having children. but at the same time, she’s casually accepting of hawke being in a queer relationship, will lightly mention it in dialogue, and makes no comment about anders or merrill moving in. i’d take that as kind of a baseline level of understanding for southern thedas, though it also varies from nation to nation, culture to culture, person to person, and class to class

now i must ask your opinions about origins' male companion romances because i never heard your thoughts about them and i'm curious now. you can take alistair's romance as MLM with bi hc/hypothesis for a further mlm commentary lol (still mourning that warden can't be his bodyguard consort 🚬)

i DO love zevran's romance it's just been a little while since i last did it since he isn't my canon romance... honestly for a 2009 game be really is a fun m/m option, i think people reduce him to just being a fun flirty option but i love how many little subtleties there are in his relationship to love and sex.

and for alistair... honestly i know very little about it aside from bits and pieces i've seen online 😭 i do keep meaning to give the romance a try using the m/m mod but... maybe controversial but i feel like itd be jarring? even aside from the out of place dialogue i just don't think he'd be that normal about falling in love with a man for the first time. what i DO enjoy is imagining him in love with a zevmancing mwarden, especially if that warden then asks him to do the dark ritual.
