imagine being in love with your best friend who is so committed to her destiny she will lock herself into a marriage with a boy she doesn’t like at all. and she will condemn you, too, to a century of slumber. and she will mourn you the whole goddamn time but it won’t stop her from doing it. and SHE is the one who is labeled chappell roan coded. briar beauty is good luck babe coded and I won’t hear a word to the contrary

I am biased for multiple reasons, but having read the books by shannon hale, like. apple was right. raven tearing her page out had LARGER REPERCUSSIONS that later actually genuinely fucked up a lot of things in their life in book 2 related to the evil queen and such, AND as far as both apple and raven knew at that point in time, not signing actually killed you. they found a dead body. when raven tore the page, apple screamed, not because she was upset, but because she thought she was DYING. honestly yes apple does get on my nerves at some points in the show, but I genuinely am such a huge apple sympathizer.
ALSO: “she has no right to be angry.” she grew up her entire life told that she was going to live her life a certain way. the focus in ever after high is in generationality, starting with the names and going down to EVERYTHING. she was groomed her entire life into being the heir for her estate, regardless of her own personal feelings, regardless of the fact that she doesn’t love her prince, regardless of anything. and apple took comfort in it, and solace in it, because she had a near-death experience when she was eight and if she was in her story, then at least nothing bad could happen to her outside of everything written down. she made her mother read the story out loud to her every single night.
I genuinely do hurt a lot for apple. I think her story has value. I think, sometimes, an argument can be made for raven being entitled, just the same; she’s a royal, still, and her other friends are commoners, which gives her privileged that they don’t have, which is explicitly defined and explored in the books as well.
they’re BOTH wrong. they’re BOTH right. in erasing any of apple’s motivation or struggles, it actually genuinely flattens the story down into “raven was right, so this sucks. why don’t they just listen to her.” there needs to be conflict, there needs to be ideology, and I think apple works brilliantly as nuanced opposition-- and the same thing with raven.
Ok but can we all agree that Apple was extremely selfish for assuming that Raven would go along with their destiny? Raven clearly didn't want to be evil. She clearly didn't want to live her live being punished for a sin she didn't want to commit. She didn't want to hurt Apple.
Yet who's crying when Raven pledges to write her own destiny? Apple. She calls Raven selfish for not bending over backwards to allow her to live a life of privilege. She has no right to be angry. She treats everyone else like trash beneath her feet. They aren't people. They're steps in achieving her own happiness.
Apple needs to get over herself.

well yes I do very much agree that the webseries has merit— I adore the designs, first of all, it can be funny as hell, it’s just generally an enjoyable experience — but your point in the original post is that you were sick of people talking about how the book series is so much better, and here you’re talking about how of course it’s going to be better? I do agree that people needlessly hate on the show for a product that’s generally targeted at kids and made to promote a doll line— but the books ARE better. they just are. it’s because it’s a different medium, it’s given more time to explore the characters, etc etc, I completely understand the nuance! but AS A STORY, the hour and a half that Way Too Wonderland was given isn’t compelling enough to me to even beat the aesthetic of the first five chapters of Wonderlandiful World. it just isn’t. I don’t consider that “shitting on the the webseries”; again, the webseries did what it set out to do, which was sell toys while crafting a world that people might find genuinely interesting. I just love Shannon Hale’s books a lot! I think those things can coexist.
im tired of people shitting on the eah web series and talking about how the books are sooo much better like. 90% of the webseries consists of 2 minute shorts of COURSE it wont go in depth about every single character and their motivation and all the longer episodes needed to have some dramatic plot to keep things interesting. like the webseries serves its purpose with introducing the audience to the world of eah and the lore

epic winter literally would've made so much more sense if the snow queen never got a husband & instead continued drifting absentmindedly around the kingdom. eventually realizing she had to pick an heir she grabbed a random ice pixie named crystal that she decided to make her daughter by adopting her & then doting on her excessively before completely disappearing & leaving crystal in charge. the reason jackie hates her is because it could've been any of them. why was it crystal? why her? why not jackie? crystal meanwhile has never experienced parental love before & becomes completely dependent on making her mother proud of her & gradually growing more bitter about her absence & eventually deciding to steal the four roses etc etc in order to get her attention. this is basically my epic winter rewrite idea

MIRROR, MIRROR: AN EVER AFTER HIGH ZINE ANNOUNCEMENT !!
holy SHIT did we get a lot of attention. the preliminary polls can be found here: POLL 1 ; POLL 2. each got well over 100 votes, and I'm hoping we can keep rolling with that energy to get some contributors!!!!
MIRROR, MIRROR: AN EVER AFTER HIGH ZINE
Ever After High fundamentally builds on the idea of narrative parallels through the double-sided coin of a story, the two narrators, and the clearly divided ideological forces. We are using those narrative parallels as the fundamental theme for this zine. Whether you're interested in romantic relationships (hero x villain, royal x rebel), familial ties (twins, parallels between mother and daughter), or platonic or ideological ideals (royal vs rebel conflict) -- we want a zine built on DUALITY, PARALLEL, and LEGACY.
THE APPLICATION FORM IS HERE:
(I'm sorry, you do have to log in to be able to upload files to google forms, but I am NOT collecting email addresses. if this causes any inaccessibility for applying for you, please just DM me and we can work it out.)
APPLICATIONS WILL CLOSE OCTOBER 18, 2024.

it’s about the nuances of classism in intersection with nepotism. is anyone there. apple and raven are in the same socioeconomic class. duchess hates raven bc “(she) seem(ed) to have everything, and all she did was complain.” raven’s story is not tragic she just doesn’t want to fill it. her mother lived in a huge castle full of servants with a loyal husband and a daughter — raven doesn’t have an unhappily ever after. she just doesn’t want to get that profit off of the backs of other people. she was given the largest dorm room in the school and she is invited to the royal parties in the royal common room and she is given the luxury of rebelling because as EQ put it - “what are you going to do, find another evil queen? I don’t think so.” the sisters that rebelled were allowed to slip out of existence quietly because of their unimportance but raven IS important and that’s why the common villains despise her . it’s so dark in here can anyone hear me

Since we WELL surpassed 50 votes — a second preliminary interest check
I would love to get anywhere starting from 20 contributors and ideally up to at least 30—but the more the merrier! again, PLEASE reblog and share, as gauging how many people would actually like to be involved in this is a good measure of how likely it is that this will pan out
EDIT: HERE IS THE LINK TO THE APPLICATION FORM!

guys. she did not “almost die to an apple and then named her child apple.” the apple was never going to kill her. she views it, symbolically, as when her destiny really started, because it was when she met the prince and got her happily ever after. it is like ashlynn being named slipper ella. it is like briar being named spindle. stupid, sure, but it’s about how apple was her entire life told by every person that her destiny was going to go exactly how she thought it would, down to her name. THAT is the point. it is nothing at all like being named gun after being shot. stop it.

what you need to understand about duchess is that she thinks she’s a good person. to have a version of duchess that does evil things for the sake of being evil destroys the version of duchess that exists in canon, which is one who makes fun of raven for being “evil,” who “doesn’t associate with commoners,” who, when placed into general villainy, freaks out. she goes to headmaster grimm and says I’m not evil! I’m not evil at all! I’m a good person. and he says of course you are, my dear. of course you are. she has no reason to reflect on her own actions, because her destiny is that of someone who is good, and she is a royal. so she must be exactly like her story says she is. she’s a good person. she is.

faybelle, in the books, does not believe that villains are allowed to be happy. in some ways, maybe she's right. she says: "villains aren't supposed to be [...] happy. we fester, we dwell, we're prone to years of melancholy. you know, proper villain emotions" (fairy's got talent). she keeps herself incredibly busy to the point of overworking herself for one reason or another--head of the cheerleader team, straight-A student, auditioning for the school play, running herself straight into the ground for the sake of making herself miserable and little else. villains, of course, are not allowed to feel things like happiness or glee.
this is an interesting in contrast to the faybelle we get in the show. we see in forest fest that she is bitter over never being invited to places, the tale of two parties displays her insecurity of others favoring people more than her. there is still that level of negative emotion present; but the part where they differ is in show!faybelle's laziness. she sets up a sweatshop to use people's pets to get out of doing detention, she calls up the fairy mafia to get out of cleaning the school. we never see that drive that characterizes her in fairy's got talent, we are just left with her as a character that delights in other people's pain.
book!faybelle is envious, bitter, and uses evil as a tool for success. show!faybelle is envious, bitter, but her use of evil is something that seems to bring her genuine joy, and her sadistic and unempathic role in the story is interesting in contrast to the more "human" take on her in the books. which one do you prefer?

I dont know what to say except....thank you, thankyou, thank you
Louie you need to fight it. That creepy shit the plasm wraith is saying is stuff abusers stay. It won't help you. It doesn't care about you. Stop and go back to those who do.
Tumblr media
TW: Abuse
I......didnt mean for the wraith to sound abusive, this is why i should never become a writer im terrible at dialouge...
I wont deny what it said was toxic and manipulative and bad and i wont deny that yes, its using Louie to get olimar and doesnt care about him only about getting olimar. (It was sorta trying to help him actually, but thatll be explained in the second arc of the story heh)
I never, NEVER had the intention of writing the plasm as a abusive being but I accidently seem to have made it seem as one
i apologize if I upset or hurt anyone with this. It was originally meant to be the Wraith trying to get Louie to join its side again, and reminding him about something that happened before olimar and the koppaites came to try to rescue him. (Again, will be explained eventually in the second arc of the story). It was never my intention to make it seem abusive/manipulative. And i dont promote any of this sorta behavior its toxic and horrible.
Please reach out to me if any of my posts have made you uncomfortable and again im really sorry, i will be more careful and more mindful of what im writing/drawing/etc.
