Miss S (episodes 6-7, "A Song of Blood") / Ma Yili as Su Wenli

I was never sure whether to file this under blue or black, as the color changes with the lighting/filters. But I love the beadwork and the matching shoulder cape. The little bow at the throat with the pearl in the center is one of my favorite features.

I thought the purse actually was meant to go with the dress, but upon looking at it close up, I think it just happens to be the same color. The beads are of a different size and pattern from those on the dress. Love the shoes and gloves too.

The lack of fanfic for Miss S is criminal. I know it's basically Miss Fisher but the dynamic between Wenli and Liu is genuinely different to Phryne and Jack and I dig it so much and I need MORE!

Okay, whichever prop person on Miss S did the research on what burned human remains actually look like: I am kissing you on the mouth. I am proposing to you. Did you have a Valentine this year? If not have a belated Valentine.

This is probably about half of the content of the urn, maybe less if the body was burned at an a bit lower temperature (which I'm assuming, going by the size of that femur head and the amount of thinner plate-like bones left). Lower temperature might also mean that the bones had to be smashed up, so you wouldn't see any big long bone fragments. I'm kind of missing some ribs, vertebrae or foot/hand bones, but I'm willing to believe they're just still in the urn.

The colour is of course disguised by the ash, but the piece of hip at the back has that yellow-ish tint I'd expect to see and at the front we've got a lovely example of the blue tint that bones can get from extreme heat.

And special shoutout for the inclusion of spongy bone (my beloathed) all over the place!

Seriously, I think they had someone who worked with burned human remains before on the prop team. Or someone who is close to an archaeologist and had to listen to them rant about incorrect portrayals of human "ashes" in film.

In conclusion: I'm in love.

One Dress a Day Challenge

July: Blue Redux (+ Green Redux)

Miss S ("Mysterious Drugs, part 1") / Ma Yili as Su Wenli

Miss S makes her very first appearance stepping off a ship in this stunning powder-blue ensemble. She solves her first mystery while waiting for her luggage to be loaded into a cab! (To be fair, she has a lot of luggage.)

While I love this show and its costumes, I do feel that they don't always hit the mark with the western-style dresses. The first episode takes place in September 1935, and some of Wenli's dresses have very strong A-line flared skirts that look more 1950s. But this one has the 1930s "inverted champagne flute" silhouette. I love the dashing cape and the large hat.

The camera has fun with this costume, zooming in on various details. (Note, I don't think the heels on the shoes are strictly period either, but I'll let that slide.)
