Just finished ep 11 of Jun Jiu Ling and it strikes me that so far it's been the inverse of The Princess Wei Young. I am almost overcome with the desire to make a checklist. I need to watch more cdramas so I can be qualified to write ten thousand words about trope subversion.

[Hanfu · 漢服]Chinese Western Han (202 BC–9 AD) Traditional Clothing Hanfu Photoshoot
She is the emperor's sister, She is also the emperor's aunt.
【About Princess Guantao Liu Piao/馆陶公主刘嫖】 Princess Guantao, Liu Piao (born before 188 BCE—died before 116 BCE), was the daughter of Emperor Wen of Han and Empress Dou, and the sister of Emperor Jing of Han. She was granted the title of Princess Guantao, but after marrying Chen Mu of Tangyi(堂邑)Marquis, she was also known as Princess Tangyi. As the aunt of Emperor Wu of Han, she was honored with the title of Dowager Dou(窦太主). Her daughter, Chen, became the first empress of Emperor Wu of Han.
Liu Piao's birth year is unknown, but her younger brother, Emperor Jing of Han (Liu Qi/刘启), was born in 188 BCE. At that time, their father, Emperor Wen of Han (Liu Heng/刘恒), was only fifteen years old and still a vassal king of han dynasty, so Liu Piao's birth year is unlikely to be later than 188 BCE. In September 180 BCE, Liu Heng was ushered to Chang'an and ascended the throne as Emperor Wen. A few months later, Liu Qi was made Crown Prince, Empress Dou was made appointed, and Liu Piao was given the title of Princess Guantao. During this period, Liu Piao married Chen Mu, Marquis of Tangyi, and they had at least two sons and one daughter. Chen Mu became the third-generation Marquis of Tangyi in the third year of Emperor Wen’s reign (177 BCE), but the exact date of Liu Piao's marriage to him is no longer verifiable.
During the Reign of Emperor Jing of Han(Princess's brother) Peirod
In 157 BCE, after Emperor Jing of Han ascended the throne, Princess Guantao Liu Piao continued to frequently visit the palace. With the favor of Dowager Dou and the indulgence of Emperor Jing, she became a significant figure in the Han court. During this time, her son Chen Jiao was granted the title of Marquis of Longlü because of his mother's status.
Liu Piao was adept at political maneuvering and used her daughter, Chen Shi(陈氏), as a political pawn. Initially, she intended to marry Chen Shi to Crown Prince Liu Rong(刘荣), the son of Lady Li(Concubine). However, due to her frequent introduce of beautiful women to Emperor Jing, which caused deep conflict with Lady Li, this proposal was firmly rejected by her. Enraged, Liu Piao later sought a marriage alliance with Consort Wang, who agreed to the match. Through the combined efforts of Liu Piao and Consort Wang, Crown Prince Liu Rong was deposed and made the King of Linjiang in the seventh year of the Yuan era (150 BCE), and two years later, he was forced to death, with Lady Li also dying from grief.
Soon after, Consort Wang was made Empress, and her son, Liu Che(刘彻), was established as Crown Prince and married Chen Shi(陈氏).
During the Reign of Emperor Wu of Han(汉武帝)
In 141 BCE, after Emperor Wu of Han (Liu Che/刘彻) ascended the throne, Chen Shi was made Empress(陈氏). As the granddaughter of Dowager Dou and the daughter of Princess Guantao Liu Piao, who had contributed to the appointment of Liu Che as Crown Prince, Chen Shi enjoyed significant favor. At this time, Princess Guantao Liu Piao had been elevated by the emperor and was honored with the title Dowager Dou(窦太主).
Later, Emperor Wu favored Wei Zifu(卫子夫), a singer from the residence of his sister, Princess Pingyang(平阳公主). This situation made Empress Chen extremely jealous, especially since she was childless and unable to conceive despite seeking medical help. Meanwhile, Wei Zifu(卫子夫) became pregnant. As a result, Empress Chen resorted to witchcraft, but Emperor Wu discovered her actions, leading to her deposition in the fifth year of the Yuan Guang era (130 BCE).
By 129 BCE, after the death of Dowager Dou Liu Piao's husband, Chen Mu, she was a woman in her sixty year old, living as a widow. At this time, she became infatuated with a handsome young man named Dong Yan(董偃). Dong Yan(董偃)'s mother had been a pearl seller, and from the age of thirteen, he had frequently visited the home of Dowager Dou Liu Piao. Known for his good looks, Dong Yan was summoned by Dowager Dou Liu Piao, who took him into her household, where he was educated and trained in various skills. At eighteen, Dong Yan served as Dowager Dou's attendant and also acted as her inner chamber servant. His gentle and kind nature, combined with their illicit relationship, led many to address him as “Lord Dong/董君.”
Later, Anling Yuan Shu(安陵爰叔) advised Dong Yan to suggest to Dowager Dou that she offer the Changmen Garden as a separate palace to Emperor Wu. Emperor Wu was pleased with this gesture and renamed the garden “Changmen Palace.” Dowager Dou, delighted with this outcome, rewarded Yuan Shu generously.
Subsequently, Anling Yuan Shu suggested that Dong Yan propose to Dowager Dou that she be ill and unable to see Emperor Wu. When Emperor Wu visited to inquire about her health, Dowager Dou expressed a desire to host him. After Dowager Dou recovered, Emperor Wu was invited to a banquet. During the event, Dowager Dou removed her jewelry, knelt to apologize to Emperor Wu, and then had Dong Yan do the same. Throughout the banquet, Dowager Dou and Dong Yan showed great respect and hospitality to Emperor Wu, who was very pleased. As a result, Dong Yan became highly favored and frequently participated in palace activities.
Han dynasty scholar-official DongFang Shuo(東方朔) was quite critical of Dong Yan, disapproving of his affair with the princess, which he felt undermined moral standards and distracted the ruler from his duties. Emperor Wu gradually distanced himself from Dong Yan, who fell out of favor and died in his thirties. After losing Dong Yan, Princess Guantao Liu Piao lived for several more years before her death. Her final wish was not to be buried with her husband, Chen Mu, but rather to be interred with her lover, Dong Yan, in Balin. This request is considered the beginning of more extravagant practices among princesses and noblewomen.
In the first year of the Yuanding era (116 BCE), her two sons, Chen Xu, Marquis of Tangyi, and Chen Jiao, Marquis of Longlü, committed suicide during their mother's mourning period due to their involvement in illicit affairs(with woman)and disputes over inheritance. The title of Marquis of Tangyi was abolished. A few years later, her daughter, the deposed Empress Chen Shi, also passed away.
In Chinese history, princesses were often unfortunate victims of political marriages and diplomatic alliances. However, there are also many fortunate examples, such as Princess Guantao. Unlike many others confined by the conservative constraints of a feudal empire, she lived a life of personal freedom and pursued her desires, breaking free from traditional limitations.

emperor!lwj au - I feel so bad for the staff, seeing this random young woman come into the emperor's quarters, call him by a pet name a bunch of times, and be very familiar with him. Also she's happily cuddling the prince and giving him a bath? the staff are (•ิ_•ิ)?
This ask made me laugh for a very long time, and since the fic is entirely from Wei Wuxian's POV, here's a short snippet from the staff's point of view!
--
"Steward Ling," a nervous young manservant from the Emperor's palace says one afternoon. "This one requests entry to the storeroom where Zeming zhang-gongzhu keeps the late Empress's belongings."
Ling Jun—the second chief steward of the present dynasty, and the son of the head of staff who served Emperor Qingheng upon his accession to the throne—glances up from his account-book to find two boys in their middle teens wringing their hands at the door to his office.
He sighs. His Majesty's servants are difficult to bear with—not because of any of them are overbearing, but rather because any extended span of time spent in the young Emperor's company seems to rob the boys of their wits.
"What for?" Ling Jun asks. "Huangshang and her Highness are both busy with the selection today, and Her Majesty's things are not due to be aired out until next month."
The elder of the two serving-boys shakes his head.
"Huangshang did not go to the selection," he whispers. "He is still in his room, with the little highness—and a woman. He asked us to fetch the cloak the late Emperor gifted to Her Majesty, so that he could give it to the lady."
Ling Jun nearly faints away on the spot.
The cloak that Xiao Yun is speaking of—a splendid garment made of thick wool, weighted down with pearls and shining silver beads sewn along the borders—was made for Empress Haoxian shortly after the young emperor was born. It delighted the late Emperor to see her in it, especially when the little taizi dianxia was with her; and after she passed away, the staff assumed that the cloak would be given to Grand Princess Zeming. But Zeming zhang-gongzhu laid the cloak away with the rest of her mother's things, insisting that it should be held in storage for his Majesty.
Since she would not wear it, Ling Jun expected that Empress Haoxian's cloak would never be worn again—and then, when it was made known to him that her Highness had given it to the young emperor, that it might be worn by the future Empress.
And if he was asking for it today, that meant—
"Who—who is the lady?" Ling Jun asks, bewildered. "The last I heard, the bridal candidates were waiting to be presented in an antechamber in the outer palace. Huangshang ought to have seen them by now, and if he is still in his quarters—is he with one of the maids?"
That would mean trouble in court, to be sure, but the nobles who sent their daughters to the selection would simply have to bear it. After all, Lan Wangji is only the second emperor of his line; and before Emperor Qingheng took the throne, his forefathers were known for disregarding all matters concerning rank when they wed. The late Emperor's own mother had been brought into the Lan estate as a nursemaid to one of his older cousins, and his father had stumbled upon her playing with the child in the Cloud Recesses' famed magnolia garden and fallen in love at first sight.
Perhaps it is one of Zeming zhang-gongzhu's maidservants, Ling Jun thinks hopefully. The Grand Princess's maids are sensible girls, and most of them have known his Majesty since they were children themselves: and though it might cause some difficulty if her Highness were to be suddenly outranked by one of her servants, such a girl ought to do well as Lan Wangji's Empress if she were properly educated for the role before her wedding.
"N-No, Lord Steward," mumbles the younger of his Majesty's serving-boys. "From what Xiao Tong overheard, the maiden is one of the xiunu from the selection. But she ran away and met Huangshang in his quarters instead of waiting to see him in the reception hall."
Ling Jun's vision blurs. "What?"
Xiao Tong nods furiously. "He called her Wei-guniang, so she must be a lady of rank. And—and Huangshang has her calling him by his birth name, just like Huanghou-niangniang used to! No one else has called him so since she died—even her Highness calls him by his courtesy name! He told me to fetch luncheon for her, and he wants to give her the mantle that the late Emperor gave her Majesty: so that must mean that she is the bride he has chosen."
"Wei?" There are no families of note called Wei living in the capital. "Whose daughter is she?"
At this juncture, one of the maids materializes on the threshold with a wild grin on her face. "Have you heard already?" she whispers, delighted. "About the girl in Huangshang's private quarters?"
"Gossip is forbidden, Xia Ye," Ling Jun snaps. "Do you have any proper business here?"
Xia Ye rolls her eyes at him. "He ordered her a fish clay-pot and braised zhusun with bamboo shoots," she says conspiratorially, before turning to Xiao Tong. "Guess what she's doing now, Tong'er! She's giving his little highness a bath!"
At this, Ling Jun nearly swallows his own tongue. His little highness—that is, his Majesty's ward, and a cousin of his on the late Empress's side—is a good child, with only one fault: a terrible fear of water, whether warm or cold. He suffers no one but his imperial father to bathe him, much to his nurse's distress—and if he had permitted a stranger to give him a bath less than an hour after meeting her, Huangshang might as well put the palace staff out of their misery and marry the girl tomorrow.
"And what's more, I know who she is," Xia Ye declares, before making a smug face at Ling Jun. "She's Jiang Fengmian's yang daughter. The older daughter is already married to Lord Jin's di son, so she couldn't attend the selection—but I heard that the yang daughter fits every one of the requirements Huangshang insisted on when he gave up trying to delay his marriage. She's older than Huangshang, I think—twenty-four or twenty-five, at the least—but Xie Li's mother is a cook at the girls' academy in the city, and she says that Wei Wuxian is the most brilliant scholar that the Grandmaster has ever taught."
All this means little to Ling Jun. The only noblewoman he has more than passing knowledge of is the Grand Princess, Lan Xichen; and his late Majesty thought it meet to educate her in everything from the six classical arts to swordsmanship and military history. Certainly the court found it absurd that Huangshang wanted a wife who was at least as well-learned as the scholars beginning their last years of study for the imperial examinations, but Ling Jun merely found it rather sensible.
"Then do you think he truly means to marry Young Mistress Wei?" he asks warily. "I suppose he must, or the lady would object to spending time with him without a chaperone."
"I don't know about that," Xia Ye says, shrugging. "He hasn't asked for Wei-guniang's hand, so who can say how matters will go?"
Ling Jun frowns. "What do you mean? She was invited here as a bridal candidate, and Huangshang clearly likes her better than all the rest, so—"
"Huangshang is currently pretending to be one of his little highness's attendants," Xia Ye informs him. "Wei-guniang doesn't know that he's the Emperor, and we're not supposed to tell her so."
"His—his attendant? Wei-guniang thinks that his Majesty is a servant?"
"Yes. And until he sees fit, nobody is to tell Wei-guniang otherwise."
With that, Xia Ye tosses her braids back over her shoulder and flounces out of Ling Jun's office, looking more gleeful than ever.
Ling Jun reaches into his desk with trembling hands and pulls out the key to the storehouse devoted to the late Empress's belongings.
"Here," he says hoarsely, handing the key to Xiao Tong. "Fetch the cloak and bring it to Huangshang. And mind how you speak to Young Mistress Wei; with any luck, she will be the new Empress before the year is out, and the first thing she will do after her wedding is choose which of the servants attending the inner palace are permitted to remain there."
"I wouldn't mind being dismissed, to be honest," Xiao Tong mumbles. "Huangshang looks just as much in love with her as the late emperor was with Empress Haoxian, and they've only just met. I don't fancy getting caught mistaking any of Wei-guniang's orders after she's married."
"Bite your tongue!" scolds Ling Jun. "Now deliver the cloak, and be quick about it. If there is so much as a speck of dust on it by the time it reaches Young Mistress Wei, I'll send you off to the laundry bureau before the madam has the chance to say a word about it."
Xiao Tong yelps and disappears, taking his hapless friend with him; and Ling Jun leans back in his chair with his eyes tightly shut, wondering if Wei Wuxian will change at all after she becomes the Empress.
"I am too old to serve such a spirited Empress," he mutters to himself. "Perhaps it is time for Ling Yan to take my place."
But it will be many months before Ling Jun's son can succeed him as the head steward. A change as great as that must wait until after Huangshang's wedding, and then for the new Empress to grow accustomed to her role as master of the inner palace; and all told, Ling Yan cannot hope to take Ling Jun's place before this time next year.
And if Ling Yun must remain until then, well...
"I suppose I might as well stay," he grumbles. "And by then, perhaps I will decide that there is no need to leave."
(Little did Ling Jun know that he would decide nothing of the kind. By the following summer, he would be driven half out of his wits by the newly-wed Wei Wuxian. But Ling Yan would have resigned his post and retired to the countryside under the duress of serving such a mistress; and as such, Ling Jun was forced—not too unhappily, for Wei Wuxian was as kind as she was flighty—to remain in his position as chief steward.
Xia Ye, on the other hand, would be swiftly elevated to the position of Wei Wuxian's chief maidservant: but the less said about that, the better.)

Contrary to popular belief, Jolyne doesn't mind people knowing she's soft.
The others—particularly the ones she met at the prison, like Ermes and Anasui—think that she tries very hard to maintain a tough reputation, that she puts effort into her hard-as-nails routine that scares off the bad guys. And that's not to say it doesn't, but most people tend to assume that this means she spurns being seen as soft, or compassionate, or even girlish.
But you know better.
I mean, obviously you do. You've been at her side since you were both six years old, meeting on the playground of your relatively shitty elementary school. You remember burning asphalt painted with volleyball-court lines, arches cracked with flecks of black stone. You know every part of her, even the parts she maybe wishes you didn't.
And you've been in love with her for far longer. Longer than that waste of oxygen Romeo, longer than Anasui or Ermes. They can make all the assumptions they want, but you know the truth. Jolyne is soft. And she is sweet, and thoughtful, and loyal, and you know there is nothing she loves more than being reminded of it.
You remember the first time you watched her do her own makeup when you were thirteen years old. Sat in her bedroom, the teal walls and pink carpet, and you were too young and lacked too much taste to feel the nausea that the colours would later induce as your eyes grew more sensitive. You sat cross-legged on her bed as Mariah Carey blasted out from the stereo, watching Jolyne's reflection in the mirror. Her big emerald eyes outlined in messy dark liner, lips outlined in green.
Messy, but she liked it. And she whirled around, brandishing a tube you had no name for.
"Nah," you said flatly. "No way."
"It's just mascara, dummy," Jolyne sighed. "It'll make you look pretty."
"No, it won't."
"It made me look pretty."
"That's 'cause you are, dipshit." You pressed your spine flat against the wall, and as you watched, the skin of her cheeked flushed, soft baby-pink.
"You think?" she whispered, looking shyer than you'd ever seen her, and you felt your heart do something funny.
"Yeah. I mean, don't be weird about it." You bit the inside of your cheek. "Jolyne, you're gorgeous."
She made a strangled, squawking sort of noise and chucked the tube of mascara at you. It bounced off your head as you threw your body to the side to avoid it, and when you looked at her in disbelief, her face was scarlet and blotchy.
"You can't just say things like that," she whined, burying her face in her hands. "Although, feel free to say it again, I guess—"
"Idiot." Your own face burned. "You are not doing my makeup."
That was the start of it, you guess.
The start of looking at her differently, of watching her out of the corner of her eye; putting up her hair into a ponytail, applying lip balm with a careful pinky finger. You've been freinds for so long that you're comfortable changing in front of each other (you used to share baths, for fuck's sake), and suddenly you're seventeen and she's stripping off her shirt right in front of you and it's not innocent anymore. It's something else.
Of course, you're not the only one to notice. The way she sort of... glows when she enters a room. Other people do, and that dipshit Romeo with barely two braincells to rub together between the steroids and the peroxide, he managed to catch her eye. This hulking, seething jock who looked at you like you were a piece of shit under his shoe, who called you weirdo behind Jolyne's back (because he knew he'd catch a fist to the face if he ever did it in front of her).
"I know you want to fuck her," he growled one afternoon, after school, senior year. He crowded you against the wall of the locker room whilst you both waited for Jolyne to change out of her volleyball uniform inside.
"You don't even know what you don't know, you fucking prick," you snarled, staring right up into his eyes. Narrow pupils and bloodshot in the sclera.
"I've seen the way you look at her," he whispered. "You're obsessed with her. And I'm warning you, back off."
"Yeah, big boy?" A smile that was almost hysterical tugged at your lips. "Except you don't really want that. 'Cause you know if I left, she'd go right along with me without even looking at you. You're nothing, and you'll be gone soon, and I'll still be here."
Romeo laughed. "You're fuckin' crazy," he said wonderingly. "Are all Jo's friends this insane?"
"No. Not all of them," you said quietly. "But I am. I'm pretty insane. And you're going to ruin her life. I can fucking feel it. One day you're going to ruin her whole life, and I'll be there to pick up the pieces."
"Romeoooo~" The singing voice soared over the thick tension. The two of you barely had time to step apart before Jolyne came sauntering out the locker room, her face alight in a pleased flush. Her eyes widened when she saw you, and she squealed delightedly. "You stayed!"
"I told you I would, dipshit," you said fondly, grinning as she launched at you and pressed a green kiss to your cheek. Over her shoulder, Romeo glowered.
"Wasn't I amazing?" she said cheerily, linking hands with her boyfriend and swinging their joined arms. Her eyes practically sparkled as she stared up at him, lips stretched in a perfect smile.
After a moment, he grunted. "Yeah, babe. Exceptional as always. That's my Jo for you, huh?" A kiss to her temple, and Jolyne squirmed delightedly.
Strictly speaking, you guess—you ruined Romeo's life before he could ruin hers. Not that he knows it. Oh, you want him to know. You want to throw the evidence in his face and make him seethe, all the while knowing there's not a fucking thing he can do about it.
It happens on Jolyne's nineteenth birthday. You hadn't seen much of her in the day, unfortunately—you'd gone for breakfast, which was tradition for the both of you. You drove her to Denny's and your plates were loaded with pancakes, bacon and syrup, drooling sticky piles of sugar that you scooped up eagerly, talking enthusiastically between bites. She was spending most of the day with Romeo—gag—but you'd see her at the party later.
It takes place at your house, actually. Jolyne's mom won't stand for that kind of stuff, and she's gracefully turning the other cheek to the underage drinking because she adores Jolyne. Her dad had sent a card that arrvied two days early, the inscription typically blunt:
Jolyne, Happy birthday. Sorry I couldn't be there. Be responsible and have a good day. Best, Dad.
"Best, Dad," she snorts derisively, tossing the thing dramatically over her shoulder. But she doesn't trash it. She never trashes the stuff from Jotaro. She keeps it all in a silver box under her bed like a shameful secret, and she reads them when she wants to cry but can't get the tears out. "What an asshole."
She goes home for a bit to get ready, and you prep the house for the party. By the time she comes back, hand-in-hand with Romeo, the place is already crowded. Projections of shapes and colours glide lazily over the walls, filming the bassy music that thumps through the mortar.
She looks fucking angelic, weaving her way through the crowds; she gives an excited little skip when she spots you slouched against the wall, halfheartedly entertaining some drunk guy. Jolyne rushes up to you, clasping your hands excitedly in hers.
"This is amazing!" she gushes. "It's all so amazing! Don't you think, Romeo?"
He barely grunts in reply. "Where's the booze?"
Jolyne's smile falters; something hard sets in her jade eyes, the kind of look that has your mouth suddenly dry. "Eh? Why are you being rude?" Her shoulders square, knots of hard muscle. "Y/n put this whole party together for me! This is their house!"
"Yeah, Romeo." An oily smirk slips over your face, unseen to Jolyne. A vein twitches in his temple over his lusterless eyes. "This is my house. How 'bout a little thank you?"
A spasm crosses his ugly face. "Fuck this," he growls, and Jolyne's jaw drops. "I'm sick of this creep trying to make me look bad in front of you. Jo, I'm leaving. Are you coming, or what?"
"You're joking." Jolyne's eyes are round and hard; an angry blush is starting to bleed across her cheekbones. "It's my birthday, Romeo."
"We'll do something," he presses, picking up her small hands hamfistedly; you bite the inside of your cheek at the touch, wondering if he even noticed the nails she got done especially for today, whether he even cared. "C'mon, Jo, I'll take you to dinner. That Italian place."
Jolyne's face screws up. "I don't like Italian food," she says, which is true. She doesn't like cheese or tomatoes much. Her favourite food is dark chocolate, actually, but if you're talking dinner than Thai food is a safe bet. She likes to make out that she can handle more spice than she actually can.
Romeo grows visibly frustrated; you slouch back against the wall, barely blinking, trying to bite back a smirk. "Anything, then. C'mon, Jo, I can't—I won't leave you here with this creep. Can't you see? Can't you fucking see how obsessed they are with you? It's fucking freaky!"
"Get out!" Jolyne screams. "You horrible pig. How dare you talk about them like that?!"
"You're so dumb you can't even see it!" Romeo yells, his voice starting to rise up over the music. Eyes shift, people turn; you can't have that. As much as you enjoy seeing Romeo squirm, this is Jolyne's day, and you won't let some roid-chomping ape ruin it. You slide between them, setting a hand on Romeo's chest and shoving him back—not violently, not really, you can't have Jolyne thinking you're as bad as him—just enough to make some space to breathe.
You're so close to Jolyne, her shoulder touches your back. You can feel her breathing raggedly, taut with fury.
"That's enough," you say, looking Romeo dead in the eye. "I know we don't exactly get along, Romeo, but I was willing to put that aside for Jolyne on her birthday. I'm sorry you weren't."
Romeo's face flushes slowly with purple colour. "You fucking—you—"
"Romeo," Jolyne says harshly. "Leave. I don't want you here."
His jaw clenches. "Fine! Fine. See if I fucking care." He spins on his heel and storms out, and you physically feel the tension in the air thin as the front door slams behind him.
You turn around immediately as everyone else awkwardly buries themselves in cups and conversations again. Jolyne's arms are wrapped around herself, staring at the floor. Genuine sorrow twangs deep inside you—you wonder, hardly for the first time, whether you would be this instigatory if she was with someone who actually deserved her.
A smaller, bitter part of you that you usually try to ignore insists that nobody really deserves her. Not even you. But you'll try your best.
"Hey," you murmur. "You okay?"
"H-how can he be so mean?" Her eyes are big and luminous as she turns them to you, shining with tears. Something deep inside you dies at the sight—Jolyne is rare with her tears. More often her intense emotions manifest as anger. You swallow, glancing around.
"Okay. Come on, let's get out of here," you mutter. You lead her through the crowded hallway and up the stairs, heading for your own room. The music becomes muffled as you shut the door behind you, blaring softly through the floorboards like you've dipped your head underwater. Jolyne sniffles, her eyes already drying; she knuckles at them dispassionately, smearing her carefully-applied eye makeup.
"What a mess... I ruined it all," she says, flopping down on the bed. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be stupid, dipshit," you say fiercely. "It's your thickhead boyfriend. God, I can't stand him."
"I know." Jolyne picks miserably at her nails. "Maybe he's not... as perfect as I thought he was. But I love him. I mean, I think I love him? Just not when he's like this."
"He's like this all the time," you deadpan, and Jolyne's lip quivers. You sigh, melting down to sit next to her on the bed.
"I don't know what to do," she sighs. "I thought everything was so perfect, and now..."
"Jolyne." Always her full name. You never presume to shorten it, to chip off even one perfect syllable. Every time Romeo calls her Jo, you feel your bones grate together. Like he can't even be bothered to remember who she is. There are thousands of Jo's. There's only one Jolyne. "You deserve so much better than him."
Her throat flexes when she swallows, glancing up at you between the wisps of her green bangs.
It's funny—you know Jolyne inside and out. Every molecule. And yet you still don't see it coming.
Her lips press against yours for the briefest moment, shy and tentative and they taste like aloe vera. You freeze up completely in shock, not even having the werewithal to blink, and Jolyne rockets back, blushing madly.
She waves her hands frantically. "I—hang on! I'm sorry! I shouldn't... I didn't mean to..." Her voice gears up for a wail. "I'm ruining everythinggg!"
"Jolyne!" You clamp your hands upon her shoulders, your pulse thundering in your ears. "C-calm down. It's okay. You haven't—you haven't ruined anything."
Jolyne's brows draw tight together. "I can't betray Romeo," she says, twiddling her fingers. "But I... I'm so fuckin' sick of feeling like... he never compliments me! Never! And tonight, it was my fucking birthday and he just blew me off! What a pig! I'm so sick of him sometimes, I just want to—to—"
Her soft, cold hands land on your face and she kisses you again, harder this time, with intent, and you feel every cell in your body come alive. You hardly believe it's real, but this time you're not going to waste even a nanosecond not concentrating. Your eyes slip closed and your hands move, dropping from her shoulders; one slides down her arms until it wraps around her waist, drawing her close, feeling her soft, toned body press flush against you. The other cups the back of her neck, cradling her like she's something precious. She is, of course. She's the most precious thing in the whole world.
It's overwhelming; it's everything you've dreamed of for the last six years or so, and even as it's happening it barely feels real. You feel the urgent need to make the most of it before you snap out of this dream, or Jolyne reverts back from the delirium that's cleared seized her. It's your chance, after all—to finally show her what someone like Romeo could never give her.
Your left hand slips unde the hem of her shirt, fanning out over the warm skin beneath, and Jolyne shudders. She pulls back from your lip momentarily, her eyes searching yours so intensely that your heart lurches.
"Isn't this wrong?" she whispers, as though she's truly conflicted.
Your free hand brushes a lock of her from her face. "Does it feel wrong?"
There's a moment of hesitation—you can see her conjure Romeo's face in her mind—and then she shakes her head. "It should feel wrong," she mutters, and your thumb strokes soothingly over the small of her back.
"Jolyne," you murmur, and you watch in shivering euphoria as her body shudders as your voice slips into something lower, rolling over the both of you like hot honey. "Lemme take care of you, okay?"
A painful dark blush melts over Jolyne's pretty cheeks. "This won't ruin anything, will it?" She keeps you pinned for now, not letting you carry on. So bold, your Jolyne. People like Romeo want to stamp it out of her. You can't even imagine it. "I dunno what I'd do without you."
"Jolyne," you groan. "Don't say stuff like that right now."
"Eh? Why?!" Her expression twists. "I'm just trying to make sure—"
"You're kind of having an effect, princess," you grit out. Jolyne stops short, her mouth working soundlessly for a few moments.
"Ha! Am I really?" she gushes, her eyes sparkling. "Let me see!"
"Wh—no!" You swat at her hands, cheeks burning. "Cut it out, dipshit. You'll..." You pause, weighing your words. "You'll see soon enough, anyway."
The smile slips off of Jolyne's face, replaced by nervous anticipation. Your heart beats at the speed of sound, jackrabbiting against your ribcage.
You shake your head, scrub a hand down your face. "Lay down, okay? I said I would take care of you, and I mean it." There's a spot of hesitation on her face before she cautiously scrambles up against the headboard, peering down at you sat at the foot of the bed. You strip off your shoes quickly before clambering on over her, fitting your legs neatly over her waist.
She bites her lip. "Y-you really wanna..."
In answer, you lean forward and tuck your face against her neck, breathing in her perfume. She shivers as you nose at the delicate skin, finally putting your lips on it like you've dreamed of doing, and she's just as receptive as you've always thought she might be, letting out a squeak before her head tilts up, baring her throat to you.
"So cute," you whisper, running your hands up her sides. She's small, but so toned—she works out a lot, and it's a unique kind of torture seeing her in gym clothes, all sweaty with her hair pinned up, heading for the shower. "God, you drive me fucking crazy."
"I—I do?" Her breath is caught, trapped. Her hands push under your clothes and skim over the flesh there, cool and clammy, and you shudder so violently that you inadvertently press yourself against her.
"You have no idea." You mouth at her neck almost frantically, sucking skin between your teeth, laving with your tongue, pinching lightly with your teeth before moving onto the next; dotting lines down her neck, collarbones, putting your teeth over the jut of bone and sucking. Jolyne moans, high and shivery, and the sound makes liquid lightning rush to the place between your thighs.
You curse your own impatience, too hurried to savour her like you really want. You reason that you'll have time, after, later, some indeterminable point in the future as you reach down and hike up her shirt, over her head, flinging it to some distant point in the room. Jolyne stares up at you, unabashed; why would she be? You know every inch of each other's bodies already. You smooth a palm from her sternum to the waistline of her jeans, through the valley between her breasts, and Jolyne groans, eyes fluttering shut. You can see the smokey green makeup painted over her lids, the clumps of mascara caught in the delicate lashes.
The flesh beneath your hand is soft, warm muscle. You happily think that she could break you apart if she wanted—but that's the really incredible thing about your Jolyne. She doesn't. She is capable of great violence, but it's never what she wants to do.
She's so, so special.
"You're so beautiful," you sigh; your pupils are probably heart-shaped by this point. "Oh, god—princess, you have no idea how bad I want you."
Jolyne shudders, pushing her hips up against you and you nearly choke. "Show me," she grunts, a challenge in her eyes. "Show me—please."
"'Course, pretty girl," you murmur, watching the flush climbs down her chest. "Anything for you."
Your hands move to the front of her jeans, fumbling with the button and zipper before you drag them down her thighs. Jolyne perks up and helps you shed them, and they too disappear into the nameless void, where everything but Jolyne ceases to matter even an iota.
Next goes her underwear; she wears boxers a lot, and today is no exception. Emerald-green briefs that you drag down her legs so clumsily that they end up dangling from one ankle. Jolyne sinks her teeth into her bottom lip, face lit up bright red as she watches you knead the flesh on her knees, her thighs. Your breath comes in short, sharp gasps, the heat in your abdomen almost unbearable—but you can't even think of touching yourself. This isn't about you.
It's all about her.
You push her thighs apart, gently, and only now does some tension coil up in Jolyne's stomach, her breath shaking.
"It's okay," you remind her softly, and press soft kisses to her right knee. "It's me, yeah? You have nothing in the world to hide from me."
Jolyne's whole expression seems to melt into something dreamy, like she's home, and you could weep. A soft smile plucks at her mouth.
"You're right," she says, swallowing hard.
"'Course I am, pretty girl," you say lazily, skimming your lips against her inner thigh, a hint of teeth just to hear her gasp. "'Cause I know you, yeah? Better than anyone."
"Y-yeah," Jolyne whimpers, and your eyes practically roll back into your head at how wrecked she sounds already.
You prop your face on her inner thigh, gazing up at her dreamily. "Want me to make you feel good, angel?"
"W-well, obviously," she grunts, squirming her hips. You use your free hand to pin her down.
"Say it," you can't help but poke, watching as her blush darkens. "Say, I want you to make me feel good."
Jolyne glowers. "Eh... you're the worst kind of pervert, aren't you? How didn't I guess..." She throws an arm over her eyes. "I want you to make me feel good. Dummy."
Something intense and hot rolls over you as the words leave her mouth, and without another moment of hesitation you grab her leg, wrapping your fingers around one slim ankle and pulling it up so it bends. "Can you hold that there for me?"
Wide eyed and mouth agape, Jolyene reaches for her own leg to hold up, fingers digging into the flesh of her thighs.
"What a good girl," you murmur, and Jolyne squeaks again; her fingers dig into the fat of her own leg, and she stares at you like she's hardly seen you before. There's something gratifying in that disbelief; proof that you're not the awkward thirteen-year-old you've feared she's always seen as you as. You're her equal, her soulmate, and you're both all grown up, now.
Some more than others.
You press your lips to her cunt and she moans, fingers scrabbling desperately to retain a hold of her leg. There's a soft dark thatch of hair that tickles just slightly as you shuffle down between her legs, using your fingers to spread her open. She's wet, and your mouth fills with saliva as you dive in, burying your head between her thighs. With her free hand, you hear her clap her fingers over her mouth to stifle the shriek she lets out at the contact.
The moment your tongue makes contact you know you're lost. Your eyes slide shut as your mouth works at her, feeling her hands slide into your hair and grip, hard, hard enough to remember that it's real. And that notion sends a whole new delirium rushing through you, until you feel literally high, drunk on Jolyne, your perfect girl and her perfect body. She tastes so good, practically addictive, and when her thighs tremble and squeeze around your head you think there would be no better way to die in the world.
She's saying something—choked, hoarse gasps of your name. You pop off her clit with a lingering suck, gazing up at her with a smile you can't quite remember to dial back. Jolyne's pupils are blown wide and dark, barely a ring of green surrounding them.
"It—it's so..." She squirms. "Please keep going."
"No worries on that front, angel," you murmur, sliding your hands under her thighs and pulling her even closer. "I'm gonna make you come for me, yeah?"
A hard shudder wracks her body. She never—it's so strange to hear such filth spill from your lips so easily. You're barely comparable to the friend she's known almost her whole life.
And yet—you are. This could be nobody but you. She doesn't know how she didn't see it before.
You dive back between her legs with unparalleled vigour, and Jolyne's head spins frantically. She's never felt anything like this. Romeo went down on her once in a blue moon, and before that had only been awkward teenage fumblings, sticky and awkward, never this—this worship. It's honestly the best word she can come up with for it. You look like if someone tried to pry you away from her right now you'd kill them without a thought.
The thought shouldn't make her shiver in pleased delight—and yet here we are.
Your tongue rolls over her clit, glides between her folds, presses in, and loops all over again until her hands are fisted in your hair and she's crying out against the muted blaring of the music.
"Fuck, fuck," she curses, blinking hard to try and stay focused. "Gonna come, I'm gonna c-come—"
"I got you," you moan against her, the vibrations sending a whole new set of jitters up her spine. "My girl, my good girl, c'mon, give it to me, I need it, fuck, I need you to come for me—"
Your lips latch onto her clit and suck once, harshly, and Jolyne comes so hard she feels her body separate from herself. Seeing stars has always felt like a dumb expression, but she swears white rockets across her vision, tears it open to perfect clarity. Her thighs clamp down on your head, hips rocking up against you as she shudders and moans through it, and all the while you keep your fingers on her, stroking slow and soft until she twitches from overstimulation. Her foot kicks out on instinct, catching on your shoulder.
She comes back to herself when she hears you wince. "Sorry," she says hoarsely. You just roll your eyes fondly and tap her ankle away.
You flop against her as she attempts to pick her breath back up. She can feel her own release dripping down her thighs and she looks at you, unexpectedly shy. It's surreal, but—but even as reality sets in cold as stone, she cannot quite bring herself to feel guilty.
You press a lazy kiss to the size of her bared breast, making her flinch in surprise. "Heh. You animal."
"Yeah," you agree readily, your voice hoarse with want. "For you, yeah."
Jolyne's eyes flutter. She doesn't quite know what to say to that, to any of this. Instead she swallows, looks around to try and get her surroundings. Your bedroom is intimately familiar—the dark walls, the posters, the fishtank and blinds and assortment of blue stringlights and lamps. Your room has always kinda felt like being inside an aquarium.
A lump settles in her throat. She's grown up here. You both had.
And though she knows she should get dressed and find her phone, although she knows she should call Romeo and try to cover up the hickies dotted haphazardly all over her throat, she can't quite bring herself to do it. Any of it. Because you'd made her feel more loved in twenty minutes than Romeo had in months.
So she curls back up next to you, jamming her head aginst your heart. She feels your breath hitch at the contact and squirms delightedly.
"J-Jolyne?" you say weakly.
"Shut up, dummy," she says as matter-of-factly as she can manage. "I wanna sleep."
"...Okay, angel." Your voice is soft, soothing. "Anything for you."

"good morning, lee."
prince zuko of the fire nation shot him an impressive glare, all things considered. a weaker man would have broken four days ago, when lan-wei had begun reconditioning the young firebender. prince zuko had stubbornly held, refusing to give up a single shred of his identity. any progress lan-wei had made thus far had been pushed back on.
well. that was what made it all the more rewarding.
"i'm not lee."
"no, you aren't," lan-wei admitted, "-not yet, at least."
the prince looked like if he came a step closer, he'd bite. lan-wei stroked his beard in amusement. when princess azula had offered up her own brother for experimentation, he could hardly believe his luck- and had to laugh at the coincidence. the last time he'd been given permission to do what he liked with one of their... guests, it had also been a prince of the fire nation.
he had turned prince lu ten into what long feng had wanted- a proper, upstanding earth kingdom citizen, who was fully loyal to the earth king and the dai li. everything else was just a little zest, to make min-su feel more like a real person. he'd given him a proper, if vague backstory. the result was someone who felt real and authentic- more so than the joo dees ever did.
ah, the joo dees. he'd perfect that experiment someday.
but for now, he had to focus on the second fire nation prince he'd been granted the task of altering. princess azula had requested that her brother become lee the tea server, the alias he'd had while here in ba sing se. she also wanted him to be unfailingly polite to those above his station- which would be everyone, she'd said. make him a commoner from the lower ring.
if min-su had been a dry run, then lan-wei planned to make lee the finished product. how much could you truly change a person with this technique? how far could it go? lan-wei wanted to push the boundaries. isn't that what any good man of science did?
"really, i don't see why you're trying so hard to resist, prince zuko," lan-wei observed, "-you could be quite happy as lee."
zuko spat in his face.
hm. crude behavior for a prince. he suspected that would be fire, if he weren't currently under the influence of a bending suppressant. he merely wiped it off with his sleeve, nonplussed.
"he's not wanted, you know," lan-wei observed, "-prince zuko, I mean."
zuko twitched.
ah. he was getting somewhere.
"think about it," lan-wei said, "-your father banished you and later declared you a traitor and your sister is the reason you're down here. i believe your mother disappeared quite a long time ago."
"my uncle-"
"ah yes, your uncle," lan-wei stroked his beard, "-poor general iroh. how cruel of you, prince zuko- to betray him after all the love and care that he gave you. forging fake passports to sneak you into the one place he'd thought you'd be safe from your father. couldn't have been easy."
zuko visibly deflated. lan-wei resisted the urge to smirk.
"ah, but you should look on the bright side," lan-wei said, "-you've got a real opportunity here, prince zuko. nobody wants you, but lee? i could make him into someone who's wanted. wouldn't that be nice, prince zuko? to be wanted?"
ah. there it was. the longing in his eyes. there was a crack there.
lan-wei smiled.
"prince zuko," he said, "-the earth king has invited you to lake laogai."
#lee from the tea shop#zuko voice: if i suppress all of my feelings and mask them with anger i'll be fine. there won't be any unexpected consequences#(there were in fact. unexpected consequences.)

What I find fascinating about the Story of Kunning Palace is that the large events and relationships from life 1 generally remain the same in life 2 (e.g. Ning’er runs into the princess and gains her affections, Yan Lin’s home gets raided on his coming of age ceremony, Yan Lin and his dad getting exiled, etc.), but the outcomes and feelings towards Ning’er are different due to her changed motivations/actions.
The most significant differences in this life are her relationship with Yan Lin and Yan Lin in general. Yes, I’d argue even more significant than the changes with Xie Wei. To me, aside from making sure she stays alive in this life, Ning’er’s greatest motivation is to save Yan Lin’s life and his soul/goodness. As we can see in life 2, Yan Lin is a puppy! Literal sunshine! And he treats Ning’er well above everything else.
I feel like it’s this desire for repentance and to preserve Yan Lin’s goodness that drives the bulk of her changes. Yeah she’s also trying to live up to her promise to Zhang Zhe to be a good person in life 1, but I wonder if that would have just remained surface level (like when she tried to convince herself that she can learn to love antique jade restoration in an effort to get closer to Zhang Zhe 😂) without also her desire to save Yan Lin.
Like @dangermousie discussed at length already, Yan Lin represents everything good in Ning’er. Just as his soul got corrupted in life 1, so did Ning’er’s. In life 2, because Ning’er did not betray him, his goodness and love for Ning’er remains intact and in the process. Ning’er also regains some of the goodness and warmth that she originally had when she first arrived at the capital. I mean, imagine how much more sinister Yan Lin’s “if you don’t get married by the time I return, I’ll snatch you back myself” would sound coming from life 1 Yan Lin? Shudder. Whereas it would sound like a threat from life 1 Yan Lin, it is a sweet joke from life 2 Yan Lin meant to alleviate any guilt Ning’er might feel from not reciprocating his romantic feelings.
Speaking of that, I am so, so happy to see a second male lead (or is it third?) that respects the FL’s feelings and is not annoyingly clingy. Yan Lin never changed how he felt or treated Ning’er even after learning that she did not love him romantically. He also never got jealous even after realizing she liked Zhang Zhe, nor did he try to guilt her into loving him. It’s just so refreshing and makes me love him even more.
Another interesting shift in relationship dynamics is the one between Ning’er and the guard. Again, it’s similar but different from life 1. In life 1 he was her muscle and did all her dirty work. In life 2, he his again her muscle and arguably is still doing her dirty work. However, in life 2, her purpose is different. Whereas in life 1 she used him to become empress and gain/retain power, in life 2 she uses him to try to save Yan Lin and his family. I’m not saying that the guard is a good person in life 2. I trust the man as far as I can throw him. But maybe he is a bit less evil? Or at the very least, because he’s using his violence for a less evil purpose, his corruption/descent into evil is cut off early and he doesn’t become an irredeemable character.
Last but not least, our emo professor shape qin otaku, Xie Wei. It would require me to write another short novel to go over how his character has changed in life 2 due to Ning'er and I feel like so many others have already discussed it better than I could. But I do want to discuss the potential collateral changes in Xie Wei. For example, Yan Lin. Because Yan Lin did not become hardened and “evil” in life 2, perhaps Xie Wei won’t end up becoming the bloodthirsty ruthless Xie Wei we saw in life 1. I imagine it might be a bit difficult to go on a murderous bloodbath when your cousin is a lovable ball of sunshine who just wants to protect the world (I mean, how precious 🥹. He’s like those young boys you see in anime who say they want to be a hero when they grow up). Also, in this life, his beloved uncle is still alive, so he and Yan Lin are not as desperate/left with nothing to lose in the world as they were in life 2. So maybe there is a chance that the bad ending of life 1 can be avoided for Xie Wei too. He was without a doubt the victor in life 1, but at a very high personal cost.
And that’s kind of the amazing thing about this drama. It’s not just a redemption story for Jiang Xuening. It’s also a redemption story for all these other characters with her change acting as the catalyst. Just as her actions sent them down their respective paths in life 1, her actions in life 2 are also slowly but surely changing their fates in life 2. If it wasn’t clear that she was the main character of this drama already, it sure is now!

I was thinking why I spent the bulk of My Stand In wanting to strangle Ming and never did warm up to him from beginning to end and I genuinely love Huaien in MYATB and a small part of it is any emotion Huaien feels is directed solely for/at XB unlike Ming's obsession with boring Tong
BUT
That's not really it. It's because my reaction to behaviors/characters is setting-dependent. And my atittudes on them are strongly dependent on whether it's a period or modern setting.
I have a very different attitude to actions of a period era killer brought up in a feudal society where human life has no value and killing of a whole clan for kicks is a matter of course, and who's been brought up in a fucked up rebel/imperial family with nonstop abuse and a spoiled modern day dude.
I will accept a hell of a lot more murder/dubcon/noncon/unhingedness/red flag/you name it in a period setting. Because it just fits.
It's sort of like Fei Wo Si Cun novel adaptations - MLs of Goodbye My Princess, Siege in Fog and Too Late to Love You do some truly unhinged stuff but I can understand it more because they are a period royal or a 1930s warlord. The one ML in her adaptations I can't stand is the ML of Sealed With a Kiss. I hated his blackmailing/abusing/rapist self but in watching I realized if that story was set in eg the Wei Dynasty, I'd put up with his "daughter of people I want revenge on must pay for their wrongdoing so I force her to be my mistress and humiliate her and threaten her to give her to my friends and oh I am also married" shenanigans a lot better. I mean, I can't say he'd be a love's young dream under any circumstances but then neither is the murderous rapist ML of GMP and while I can't say I root for him, he is a mesmerizing character, tragic as much as repelling - a shark in a tank full of other sharks.
Like - the sole time Boys Over Flowers' ML's actions made sense was in Gong which basically transposed the whole thing into the Qing Dynasty.
Or think of Meatbun's CFC, which I ended up loathing. I'd still have issues with how the last third blew up the themes set up in the first 2/3, but MC's actions would be less repellent to me if it was a period setting.
It can all be summed up as - if a modern man murders people on the reg, believes women are inferior to men while married to ten of them at once, and owns slaves, he should be in jail for life. If he's a 10th century dude, he's just average warrior dude.
Ming is a modern dude, a spoiled kid of a rich family who's never lived in an extreme, death is a second away and the whole world is like this, society. I have different standards for him than a period dude.

Hello! I invented the ultimate time machine! But it has some problems, it can go back in time as far as you want, or to the future.
BUT! if you try to go between 1880-1939 it won't allowed you. Same if you want to travel to recent eras, 1995-2023.
Call your favourite character, oc/ship and travel with them across the time (except the aforementioned years.) Let me know where you landed!
You can create a moodboard or reply to tell me where you are.
Just press the button.
1878
The first stop is San Francisco in the late 1870s.
Brilliant Chang is a man named Ah Sahm, the hatchet man for the Hop Wei Tong.
Eva is Eva Iturbide y Smith, the odd Princess of Mexico living in San Francisco.

Of first meetings - Fei Bai Bing
ALT text under cut
She put down her cup and looked up at him. Aside from occassional nibble at pastry brought by a waiter she didn’t touch any of the food in front of her.
‘’Color me curious, how did you find out I switched with my sister?”
‘’You accepted Princess Consort's invitation for the small banquet, while still acting as Fei Bai Ping,” Wu Chun Tian replied, and started his dinner.
He noted her raised brow.
He figured he should be as much truthful as he can - if he wants young miss Fei to come over to 9th Prince side. It’s tricky - Fei family is allied to 4th Prince by marriage granted by the Emperor. Fei Xin is by all accounts loyal to Lian Bai Wei. However after his little trip to temple in the mountains, he is quite sure that first and second miss’ of the household do not feel the same way.
‘’Our Princess Consort enjoys a wide array of pastries,’’ he continued. ‘’Recently she’s been enjoying sweets brought by merchants to our Minli harbour from far off lands and wanted to share them once we’re in the capital.’’
Young woman at the other side of the table frowned, understanding visible in her eyes.
‘’And from what I know you sister does not eat pastries due to wasting-thirst disease, no?” he quipped.
‘’Being friends with my cousin comes in handy,’’ she said.
‘’Can’t deny. Don't blame me - it's Fei Jing Rui who has loose mouth.”
‘’And then you visited my sister in the mountains and heard the rest of the story.”
“Out of curiosity, yes.”
She took another sip of her tea and gave a small sigh.
Golden ornaments in her hair jingling as cocked her head, ’’So, what is that you want?”
‘’Xiao Lou Tai - or rather, the information that Xiao Lou Tai can provide me.”
Her lips curled into a smile, first one this spring afternoon. She hummed and refilled her tea and then added a drop of honey into the cup.
Everything she does, he notes, is unhurried and graceful. As if she had all the time in the world. Makes sense for someone who schemed from the inside of 4th Prince mansion for a year.
‘’Does the 9th Prince not have his informants? If so, then he’s further from the race to the throne than I thought.”
‘’He has his informants, but not a whole network,’’ he admitted. ‘’What I want is much more than a group of runners and your Xiao Lou Tai has it.’’
He leaned on the table.
‘’You have a bloody feud with the 4th Prince. You have Xiao Lou Tai, but you don’t have means to bring him down, young miss Fei.’’
The clutter of the restaurant noise from below the balcony and some people passing by the room was the only indication that time has not slowed down or stopped.
‘’Three conditions,’’ Fei Bai Bing finally spoke. ‘’One - the information that you will be requesting will still cost you. Two - I do not want anyone else knowing about this deal. I do not plan to be anything but a young miss of the Fei family that just came back from the mountain temple.”
He nods. ‘’Reasonable enough. Third?”
‘’I want you to establish, by whatever means, a tea house in Minli.’’
He blinked.
‘’Does Xiao Lou Tai want to expand north?”
''Mine does.’’
He didn’t have to think twice about her conditions. He smiled back at the young woman sitting across from him, ‘’deal.’’
Her lips stretched in a sweet smile and she raised her cup of honey tea, as in toast.
‘’Very well. I don’t have bitter wine, so I’ll raise this cup of sweet tea to toast you. I fall down to hell, you will go down with me.”
‘’Miss, what kind of toast is this?”
He huffed out a laugh, but raised his own cup. That's fun.
Good, he thought.
Lian Bai Wei had his web of influence stretching across the whole capital and even further. He even reached for Xiao Lao Tai with this marriage.
Always a few steps ahead of him and his prince.
‘’Color me curious,’’ he said. There was one thing he didn't figure out in all ofthis mess. ‘’You made 4th Prince eat quite a loss when minister Li stepped down, thus breaking their unspoken alliance. How?”
‘’Oh, this is something for me to know,’’ she said standing up. And then with half of her face obscured by an embroidered fan, she turned to look at him and continued,’’ and if you’re as smart as people claim you are and curious - for you to find out.”

Wei Chengxiang is one of the most important characters in Tai Sui. She's the impoverished foil to the rich kid protagonist, and she becomes one of his most important friends. She grows up to travel the world, joining the most downtrodden, powerless people on her continent and helping fight for them to have a better life. She dresses like a boy as a child in order to work factory jobs, and once she's grown up, she continues to dress in "men's clothes" despite living as a woman. She trades sassy backtalk with one of the most terrifying people in history. She has kickass gambling-themed cultivation powers. She gives her friends handmade embroidered new years gifts. She has a permanent magic wound on her face in the shape of a tear track. She goes on a revenge quest and succeeds! She kills the people that hurt her loved ones and eventually contributes to the downfall of the entire societal system that abused her. She goes from impoverished orphan to founder of a rebuilt nation, and she never once stops being wise as hell and cool as hell in that time, even when she's facing unfathomable odds. I love her.
Zhao Qindan from Tai Sui
Submission:
Zhao Qindan is a smart, generally talented rich girl that grows up extremely sheltered as a result of her family's power. When she's introduced, she's very much the naive rich girl archetype. Then, as a young adult, she's almost forced into a heinous arranged marriage, and the main character has to step in to save her. She's suddenly thrown into the real world in the aftermath as she flees her family, and she's utterly unprepared to deal with this. But! Over the next nine years, once out from her family's thumb, Zhao Qindan grows up into an intellectual powerhouse. She takes up the cause of the poor and downtrodden, and she learns about the system of sexism that drove her to her own desperate situation (the arranged marriage). She becomes a renowned debater and public intellectual, and she later begins to write for one of the continent's first newspapers. She eventually becomes one of the most respected reporters on the entire continent, shaping public opinion near-single-handedly, and she helps dismantle the social systems that led to both her family's unfair privileges and her near-miss forced marriage. She lives for two hundred years and never marries, reaching old age as an internationally beloved and respected author. She's unbelievably cool. Dandan ILY.

Which RO is the favourite to court in opinion of mother, siblings and grandmother? I saw consort Xing being red of fury if the MC ends with Shen or You
Hello! ❤️ I'm only going to do MC's full siblings, but if you want the others, the other consort's opinions, or your father's opinion, just let me know!
Putting it under the cut!
Consort Huo Qinwen: Consort Huo doesn't really care about who you decide to court, as long as you're happy! That said, she does have a slight preference for Si Huaiqiao or Xu Chanyu. First, she loves a good Servant/Liege romance (literally how she got together with your father), but also because they've been with you for a while and she thinks they know you the best.
Second Prince Nan Shuailu: Shuailu doesn't mind who you romance, but he would definitely prefer Si Huaiqiao. As mentioned in the post about Zhi Qianxie (Shuailu's personal guard), Shuailu arranged for Huaiqiao to be assigned to you. If you two ended up together, he'd be extremely pleased about it. (He's also living vicariously through you two since he's too scared to ask his own guard out LMAO)
7th/8th Princess Nan Liangxu: Liangxu, like the others, doesn't mind/care who you romance. She's a bit young to understand the political implications of marriages and relationships, so she can't really have a true meaningful and impactful opinion. But, if she had to pick, it'd be Wu Nahou. She remembers seeing her perform at different social events/festivals and she think's she's cool and pretty!
10th/11th Prince Nan Qiongkuai: Right, so Qiongkuai is a Literal Toddler at 2 years old. He has no real idea what's happening and really doesn't have an impactful opinion on this. That said, his favorite ROs are Wei Duqiong, You Kounao, and Xu Chanyu. He likes Wei Duqiong since he gets gifts from him every time he visits, he likes You Kounao since he plays with him and can match his energy, and he likes Xu Chanyu since he sees her around a lot and she also sneaks him candy!
Dowager Queen Nan Niexing: Dowager Queen Nan Niexing also doesn't really care, as long as you're happy. That being said, she would prefer you to marry someone "of your station" so that would mean either You Kounao or Shen Sandong! She also wouldn't mind Si Huaiqiao since he's been with you/the palace for over 10 years now. But if you don't romance any of those, she won't make a fuss. She's just thinking about how to best protect you from court enemies.

THE PRINCESS WEI YANG - 187 PART 1
CHAPTER 187: The Smiling Prince
Princess Lin'an returned to the house and opened the door. The servant girl hurriedly bowed in greeting. Princess Lin'an's face was filled with urgency as she asked: "Is he awake?"
The maid whispered: "Yes, Young Master Nan just woke up in the afternoon, but he refused to take medicine or drink porridge. He just lay alone and didn't listen to anyone."
Princess Lin'an felt a pain in her heart and scolded: "You useless thing, you can't even treat a patient!" The maids knew Princess Lin'an's temper well, and for fear of being blamed, they all turned pale with fright and immediately knelt on the ground. Princess Lin'an stopped talking nonsense with them, hurried forward, walked to the bedside, and said softly: "Jiang Nan, listen to me and take the medicine. Only in this way can you get better quickly."
Jiang Nan was beaten to a bloody pulp this time. He had to be cleaned and his bandages changed every day, but he was still a mess. At this moment, he was lying on the bed, but he couldn't touch the bed board. He could only frown, turn slightly, and twist his body. The bedding beneath him had already been heavily soaked with blood, turning a dark ocher color. Princess Lin'an felt an unprecedented pain in her heart. She found that she cared more and more about Jiang Nan. This attitude was not the way to treat a male concubine... She said softly: "I just entered the palace and asked my mother to avenge you."
Of course, she didn't mention a word about Jiang Nan. If she dared to say that she was doing all this for a male concubine, Empress Pei would never let her go.
Jiang Nan still didn't respond. Princess Lin'an personally brought a bowl of porridge, blew on it, and then said softly: "There has never been anything that the Empress Mother promised that she couldn't do. When you were humiliated that day, I felt the same way, and even wished I could take the punishment in your place. Afterwards, I was severely scolded by the Crown Prince. You were unconscious yesterday, and I went out of my way to ask the imperial physician to diagnose and treat you. If you refuse to take medicine, then I'll also follow suit and stop eating. In the past, only others came to please you. In the past, everyone bent over backwards to please me, but for your sake, I can disregard both the honor of a princess and the pride of a woman, just please take a sip of porridge."
Jiang Nan suddenly lifted up the blanket. Princess Lin'an clearly saw that he only moved a little, but fresh blood dripped onto the quilt. It had no time to condense and turned into a dazzling bright red stain. She hastily stopped and subconsciously took a step back, looking at his expression but not daring to speak rashly.
The whole room was very quiet for a while, and they could almost hear each other's breathing. Everyone thought Jiang Nan would not speak again, but he did.
"I... know your thoughts." Jiang Nan's voice was very indifferent. There seemed to be hatred in his eyes, ready to flow out, but his face was as cold as jade, with no trace of blood visible.
A smile immediately appeared on Princess Lin'an's face, and she gently brought the porridge to his lips: "Okay, okay, as long as you are willing to take medicine and eat, I will do anything you want."
When the maids saw Princess Lin'an's appearance, they all lowered their heads and did not dare to look again. They did not understand. In terms of appearance, Young Master Nan is not the most handsome; in terms of personality, he is not the gentlest. But Princess Lin'an seemed to be bewitched by him and never wanted to wrong him in the slightest. She even went against the Crown Prince's will and protected him in front of so many wealthy families. Now, knowing that Miss Guo is backed by the Guo family and His Highness Prince Xu, she still insists on avenging Jiang Nan. Is sh ecrazy? What's so good about this man?
They didn't know the answer to this question, and they were afraid that Princess Lin'an might not know it either. She was just taking care of Jiang Nan happily at the moment. When she turned around and saw that the maids were still there, her face changed to a cold expression. "What are you still doing here! Get out!"
With that, she changed from a tender lover to a condescending princess, and the maids quickly retreated.
Seeing that there were no outsiders in the room, Jiang Nan asked, "What is Empress Pei's plan?"
Princess Lin'an didn't expect him to ask such a question, so she said hesitantly: "This... I can't figure out Empress Mother's thoughts."
Jiang Nan's wound was in excruciating pain, and he still had a high fever. Hearing this, he felt even worse and said angrily: "You don't know anything? How is this possible!"
There was a hint of hurt in Princess Lin'an's eyes, but she became even more obedient : "My mother is a very scheming person and never wants to share her thoughts with outsiders. Not to mention me, even her beloved Crown Prince can't guess what she's thinking..."
Jiang Nan sneered and said: "Who am I? I'm just a male pet. If the princess feels some things are inconvenient to say to me, I won't force you. I'm not forcing you to completely fall out with the Guo family for me! "
Princess Lin'an's beautiful face suddenly paled. She quickly covered Jiang Nan's mouth and said, "You're not allowed to say that! Anyone else can look at you like that, but I never have. In my heart, you are my husband. You're my family and the most important man to me."
Jiang Nan was stunned for a moment. He didn't expect that he was so important in Princess Lin'an's heart. But he didn't feel moved at all at this moment. What came to his mind was the thought of how to use Princess Lin'an's infatuation to take revenge. He stared into her tearful eyes and said coldly: "Since you think of me like this, why don't you tell me the truth?"
Princess Lin'an's face showed embarrassment. If possible, she really didn't want to expose her affairs in front of Jiang Nan, because it would hurt her self-esteem. But in the face of his questioning, she had to tell the truth: "My elder brother is my mother's first child, and he is a boy, so she devoted almost all her attention to cultivating him. After I was born, I was left in the care of a wet nurse and she never held me herself. Later, Anguo was born. I thought she would be treated the same as me. Unexpectedly, my mother loved her so much that even the people around her were all Mother's trusted aides. When I was a child, I went to see my sister. As soon as I got close to her cradle, I was slapped by my mother... I really don't understand why, we're both daughters, but she loves Anguo so much. It's always been like this, she gives Anguo whatever she wants, but what about me? She just ignores me and is even willing to use my marriage as a tool, while Anguo can marry the man she wants as she pleases."
Princess Lin'an's voice was very soft, and the resentment in her eyes gradually emerged. However, when she raised her head and looked at Jiang Nan, the hatred had disappeared: "That's why I said, I can't guess what the Empress is thinking. Those words definitely aren't just perfunctory."
"If I can't take revenge, I would rather take my own life." Jiang Nan interrupted her because he didn't care about Princess Lin'an's past!
Princess Lin'an showed a trace of panic on her face and said: "Don't worry, I will definitely do what I promised you! However, you must take good care of your injuries!"
Jiang Nan's face was gloomy, and he looked out the window not far away, as if he didn't hear what Princess Lin'an said at all. Now, he just wants to find an opportunity to cut Li Wei Yang into pieces! No matter what the cost is!
In Guo Mansion, as soon as Li Wei Yang came out of the yard, the girl hurried over to salute and said: "Miss, the princess asks you to come quickly!"
Li Wei Yang was startled and then laughed. In fact, Princess Chen Liu is a very kind old lady who always likes to chat with the younger generations, but the Guo brothers don't like to talk with her. After going back and forth, she started to focus on Li Wei Yang. And Li Wei Yang was used to accompanying Old Madam Li in the past, and was also very good at getting along with the elderly. Sometimes when she went there, she could easily make the princess smile and relieve her worries. So later on, Princess Chen Liu liked Li Wei Yang more and more. If she didn't go, Princess Chen Liu would send someone to call her, or ask her to come with Madam Guo to accompany her. In fact, it was to relieve her boredom. Probably for this old lady, life in the mansion is really depressing.
When they arrived at Princess Chen Liu's place, the old lady was holding her forehead, as if she had a headache. Li Wei Yang glanced at Madam Guo, not knowing why. Madam Guo was originally in a dilemma. When she saw Li Wei Yang, she immediately relaxed her brows and said with a smile: "You're here just in time, please advise your grandmother for me. She has diabetes and must not touch certain foods. The imperial physician has repeatedly warned her, but... When I came here today, there were a lot of taboo foods on the table."
Li Wei Yang took a look. On the table was a dish of boiled duck head in sugar water, and four or five soft pastries, all coated with honey. They all smelled fragrant and looked very delicious. She was stunned. Princess Chen Liu especially loved sweets. However, after suffering from diabetes two years ago, the imperial physician repeatedly told her family not to let her touch these things again. Yet, she couldn't control herself ... Wei Yang thought of how the first time she saw her, Princess Chen Liu took out desserts to serve her. Li Wei Yang couldn't help but shake her head and said: "Grandmother, didn't you promise us that you would never touch these sweets again?"
Princess Chen Liu was sitting aside with an embarrassed expression. When she heard this, she quickly said: "It's not for me! Today, two old aunts who used to serve me came to visit, so I specially ordered the small kitchen to cook it. What they eat——"
Madam Guo didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "This daughter-in-law's eyes are very clear. You just put that honey cake into your mouth!"
Princess Chen Liu muttered: "It's just a little bit! In the past two years, you have confiscated a lot of food from me. If this continues, I won't even remember what a sweet taste is like!"
After hearing this, Madam Guo had a wry smile on her face, shook her head and said, "I'm doing this for your own good too!"
The two granddaughters-in-laws next to her, Young Madam Jiang and Young Madam Chen, both laughed quietly. The older people get, the more they act like children. Princess Chen Liu has demonstrated this sentence thoroughly every time she argued with Madam Guo for a long time about food. Of course, it was Madam Guo who won in the end! However, Princess Chen Liu was really pitiful. Every time she had these sweet dishes confiscated, she would look like the world was about to fall apart, which made people want to laugh and cry at the same time. In fact, in the past two years, Madam Guo has tried different ways to change her diet, but the princess's condition has become more and more serious, so they had to cut off her last bit of interest in honey. This was also for the sake of her health!
Li Wei Yang found it strange. Not long after she entered the palace, she discovered that Princess Chenliu liked sweets, especially honey. In the past, in order to ensure that the princess had fresh honey, Madam Guo specially raised bees in the garden and made jujube nectar and locust nectar, which was enough for Princess Chen Liu. But now the hive has long been abandoned, and the maids and servants have been warned not to give honey to the princess. So, where did the honey on this cake come from? If, as the princess said, she brought out the cakes to entertain the guests, did the other party bring the honey? No, this is impossible. There is no reason to take gifts from guests.
Madam Guo noticed her daughter's thoughtful expression and asked, "What's wrong?"
Li Wei Yang smiled softly and said: "It's nothing. I just brought Yuqian cake. It doesn't have sugar or honey, but it is still delicious. Grandmother, would you like to try it?" There was clearly a hint of coaxing in her tone.
Princess Chen Liu looked at the food box held by Zhao Yue behind her, as if she wanted to see it but was a little embarrassed, and finally couldn't help but ask: "Is it delicious?" There was hope in her eyes, acting like a child. Everyone in the room laughed, and Princess Chen Liu immediately said: "Why are you laughing? I just asked casually."
Li Wei Yang smiled and said: "Try it." After saying that, she took the food box from Zhao Yue's hand, opened it and put it on the small coffee table. A fresh aroma immediately came out of the food box. Princess Chen Liu picked up the ivory chopsticks and took a bite. Her eyes widened and she said, "Well, it's really fragrant! It also has a sweet taste!"
Upon hearing this, Madam Guo immediately looked at Li Wei Yang. Li Wei Yang knew that she was worried, so she explained: "Mother, don't worry, there is no sugar in this elm cake, it's just the young elm leaves picked from the tree, mixed with noodles, sprinkled with water, and steamed into the layered cake. Yuqian cake tastes sweet because the leaves of Yuqian are naturally sweet."
Madam Guo was relieved when she heard that there was nothing else in it. She watched Princess Chen Liu eat two pieces in just a few mouthfuls, and then reminded: "Don't eat too much, you will have dinner later."
Princess Chen Liu had already eliminated three pieces in the blink of an eye. When she heard this, she frowned and said, "I don't like those meals."
Madam Guo sighed and said: "Those are the meals that the imperial physician personally perscribed for you. Although they are not delicious, they are good for your condition..."
"Okay, okay! You are not older than me, but you are more verbose than me!" Princess Chen Liu put down her chopsticks and waved to Li Wei Yang with a smile. Li Wei Yang walked to her and was pulled to sit down by her.
"Jia'er, it's better that you are sensible and understand grandmother's thoughts." Princess Chen Liu patted the back of her hand, obviously very satisfied with her generous help.
When Young Madam Jiang heard this, she finally couldn't help but ask curiously: "But can the leaves of elm leaves be eaten?" The suburbs of Dadu are covered with elm trees, but no one has ever thought that they can also be used to make cakes!
Li Wei Yang smiled and said: "It is edible, and it has the effects of strengthening the spleen and calming the nerves, clearing the heart and reducing internal fire. It is very suitable for people of grandmother's age. Besides, it is not a whole meal, it is just a seasoning."
"Sister is really thoughtful! Is this something they eat in Dali?" Young Madam Chen saw Young Madam Jiang speaking , she also asked. Young Madam Chen had an oval face and almond eyes. She is not only beautiful but also lovable and her voice is sweet, making people feel as if they're taking a sip of honey. Thinking of Chen Xuanhua's serious appearance, it's hard to believe that they are siblings.
When Young Madam Chen asked about this, Princess Chen Liu also asked: "Yes, this kind of thing... have you ever eaten it there?"
