req by @moonlightcycle571 !!
In one mission the justice league needed to be close-nit but widespread at the same time, and comms were compromised at the place their mission was set in. Batman had the idea to ask John Constantine about any spells that links multiple people's minds together. Everyone's gonna be okay with this cause y'know they know each and others Identities and stuff except for..
Captain Marvel. To escape the fate of telling the JL about his identity he made then believe he was an ageless God who was magic incarnate, it is believable cause it was shown that there's paintings about the suit even dating back to the stone age.
Billy who's just freaking out had to agree to it cause it would've been VERY suspicious if he didn't, but he thought as long as he stayed in the captain Marvel form everything would've been alright..
There they were. Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman, The flash, Green Lantern, Plastic man (For whatever reason), and.. Billy well in the hero form of course. Stood in a room as the chain-smoking exorcist casted some sort of magic thing that will bind their minds together. And it finally happened, they could each here eachothers own thoughts and stuff.
Plastic man: Hey? Who's voice is that??
Crap. He didn't think about the heavenly twitch cha- no, the God's voices.
Flash: ...Is there a little kid in here, what does he mean by God's?
Zeus: !!! They can hear our voices..
A series of gods jumbled into surprise and started to talk, talk ALOT filling up most of their minds.
And that started a chain reaction with the JL they all started questioning each other, Luckily no one payed attention to Captain who put on his best confused face.
Wonderwoman seemed to be in deep thought.. Why was that voice sound so familiar???
Captain, No Billy was now trying to suppress the God's thoughts, he went into a slight panic abut his identity trying not to think of himself. But you know what happens if you don't wanna think about something? You think about it.
Superman: Who's imagining a young boy right now?
Plastic man: Hm.. Isn't that the Fawcett whizz kid? With the radio show? Wait Captain do you have an interview with him later on?
Captain Marvel changing his thoughts "voice" into his hero persona's ones.
Captain: Oh.. Yeah, yeah definitely. I'm just so excited..
Green Lantern: Hey.. Didn't you appear as a guest last time? How come your appearing again?? This is unfair..
Batman: This is not the point. Captain, do you know where the 5 *He closely listened in to his thoughts* no.. 6 new voices come from? (He most definitely knows about Billy's secret identity one way or another.)
Captain Marvel: Haha no..

Three of my clients have suggest I sue The actor for Reacher the massive Alan Ritchson for their new campaign The Real You brand new start. This clothing brand that matters most to the public they say with this over the top type of presentation they presented to me because they think I can deliver an excellent product. I laugh a bit walking behind the desk as I slip in to the chair as I spun it facing the desk as I pound the keys and the compute screen is lighting up and showcasing the program I made. I press another button as the project goes on shooting on to the canvas is my very own reproduced presentation as the show a AI of Alan Ritchson appears on the screen and he smiles. The crew rushing into a swinging door as they each take side pushing in a large cart it’s extremely long but what’s the main surprise is to see Mr. Ritchson and his gigantic body laying on it. In its extraordinary display of power they stop the cart, they slowly strip of him of the enlarged straps holding him down and exit the room. I clap at my latest victorybefore flipping a switch as his body is lowering with us and the floor dropping to the basement at my command the process begins. I crack up walking up to the mindless body placing the micro chip on to the back of his neck as I shoveit in and press the red button as he comesto life a mere puppet.

To my knowledge, this is the first time ever the telepathic link between Kirk and Spock appears in Star Trek media. It's from "Shell Game", a british comic published in 1973. (And yes, those are giant snails behind Kirk).
After this, their mind link would appear in the short story "Mind-Sifter", first published in a 1975 fanzine, and then collected in "The New Voyages" book. Most famous is its appearance in Roddenberry's TMP novelization.
It's curious how different, unrelated authors came to the same conclusion that Kirk and Spock should share their minds across space ("never and always touching and touched", you know), even when this never happened in the series. Though it's possible Roddenberry was inspired by "The New Voyages" book, since he wrote the intro.
PS. Feel free to add corrections to this info if you know of some earlier examples.

New piece for my Ocean's Echo fan characters! Masterpost here.
Saelin Cor had long since stopped judging the people around him for the stray, incidental thoughts that flitted past his awareness like minnows. A lot of them were just silly and shallow. Many were unreasonable - petty, unfair, disproportionately angry.
Most people knew it, too. It just wasn’t something anybody could help.
What mattered the deeper patterns of thought that Saelin had to focus on to sense. Actual intention, action and deliberate choices.
Saelin could quite happily judge people on those.
Davi had just had a whole morning full of briefings and seminars. It would have been nice if Saelin could be excused from that kind of thing, since Davi would send him all the information he needed to know and nobody ever asked his opinion. People rarely even acknowledged him where he sat beside Davi (or sometimes slightly behind, which felt just great). But that didn’t seem to be allowed.
Now, as they walked down the corridor into the mess hall, past the streams of military personnel, Saelin took a deep breath and steadied himself against the flash and flutter of hungry, thirsty, I can’t believe he did that, ugh what is taking this bitch so long, wow look at them, longing…
“If you go get the food, I’ll get coffee,” Davi said, turning away.
A quick scan of the crowded mess hall didn’t detect any of the handful of people he knew, so Saelin didn’t have any real cause to object to Davi’s assumption that they’d sit together. Probably with some of the other pilots, none of whom were synced except Davi. Fantastic. Exactly what I need.
Saelin wove his way between the crowds of people, through the billowing clouds of noise that nobody but him ever perceived, towards the food lines.
… did she see me, Lights my back hurts, for fuck’s sake not this guy again…
And it was then, collecting his tray and weaving his way through the crowd, that Saelin realised he had gone all day without once consciously thinking about the sync bond or the looming counterweight of Davi Antrell’s mind on the other end of it.
It was just… there. He had not thought about it.
He wanted to throw the tray in his hands. The urge, the need to do it rose up in his chest and made his hands tremble; he wanted to dump its contents on the ground and fling the whole thing as hard and as far away from him as possible. Maybe it’d break. He wanted to break it against the ground, and scream or cry, and run. To break something, to make noise, to show some kind of external sign of the horror and grief and rejection that pressed against his skin. No. No. No. Can’t.
He’d been here for six months.
And this was normal now.
Saelin took a deep breath, resettled the weight of the tray in his hands, and resumed walking. Probably the mugs and bowls wouldn’t have broken anyway, he told himself distantly. Not the way he wanted them to.
He was aware of the sync bond now. So was Davi; there was no way he wouldn’t have felt that sudden tempest of emotion. Here he was now, sliding alarm, inquiry and concern down the bond.
Saelin pushed back, more firmly than he probably should have. No need. Wait.
When Saelin slid the tray onto the table and dropped into the seat beside him, Davi frowned at him.
“What was that?” he asked, aloud, but under his breath.
“Nothing,” Saelin said.
Irritated concern pulsed across the sync. “Did somebody say something to you?”
The protective edge to the question was annoying. “No.”
“Saelin…” Davi glanced behind Saelin, his eyes scanning across the crowded mess hall. “Don’t pretend you didn’t flip out just now. If somebody did or said something, you need to tell me about it.”
No, I don’t, Saelin wanted to say. In fact, if I were being bullied, telling you so you could pull rank on whoever it is would probably not result in anyone thinking better of me.
The murmuring of thoughts pressed in around Saelin, distracting him from the conversation. Someone two tables back was engaged in a furious argument with the supervisor they’d just left, sitting alone and stabbing a fork at their meal viciously.
The non-synced pilot sitting across from Davi was carefully keeping his face blank and wondering with queasy fascination about the sync bond and what it felt like.
“Agent Thirty-two…”
He needed to give more than this, he realised, Davi didn’t respond well if Saelin gave him nothing.
He sighed, put his hands up to massage his temples as if they hurt. They didn’t, yet. “Nobody said or did anything wrong,” he managed to say. “I just - it’s just one of those days. Nearly dropped something, and I just... Overreacting to minor inconveniences. You know how it is.”
Davi’s face cleared slowly. “Okay,” he said. “Yeah, I get it.”
That was an odd thing about this. Saelin had thought, when this began, that the sync bond would let Davi hear his thoughts the way he heard everybody else’s. That it would convey reader powers onto Davi somehow, even if it was just Saelin it worked on.
It didn’t. Unless they were sunk really deep into the sync, one bilobed mind with the ship as its metal body, Davi had no more idea of what Saelin was actually thinking than anybody else did. Emotions came across if Saelin wasn’t careful, intentions sometimes, but conscious thought? No. Saelin could still lie to him.
“You always do get a bit oversensitive at lunch,” Davi said, offhandedly. “Low blood sugar or something?”
And every so often Davi would say something that showed two things simultaneously: that he was actually paying attention to Saelin’s moods and preferences. And that he no more understood what powered those moods than Saelin understood the inner workings of the coffee dispenser.
Saelin fought back another wave of grief and refusal, took a deep breath. He swiped his coffee from Davi’s tray and used it as an excuse not to speak for a moment.
Caffeine made his barriers worse, if anything. But the coffee was the way he took it; Davi remembered without asking now, just as Saelin remembered to snag an extra bread roll and ignore the dessert option when he got Davi’s food.
He kind of wished he had gotten the wrong things on purpose. But that was one of those mean, self-destructive little impulses he already knew decent people pretended they didn’t have.
He should give Davi credit for trying, should extend that little bit of grace that said ‘he didn’t mean that to come out as rude as it did, let it go’.
Saelin didn't want to.
“Or something,” he mumbled. “Sure.”

Linking With Chris
Tumblr media
Christopher Pinewell is the President and The CEO of Pinewell industries a modern Tech company that produces mini microchip and link connections.
He is my boss unfortunately for me he calls me into his office today with this stern cold expression of his face a man with a need of austerity to him.
My nerves rises up leaving me in a jittering like sensation taking over me as the elevator opens up by feet walk off onto the twenty floor of the building.
The floor’s employee’s turn to stare at me in this weird gawking sensation as I make my way down the hall to his offices at the end of the hallway.
Entering the room I knock swinging the door opens with him sitting behind his desk on his lap top a link implanted in his head trying to figure this out.
“Get in here now! This project had a heavy deadline of today, you need to prove to me this works immediately or you are fired.” He screams at me.
I sigh standing next to him wanting to punch hole in his head, using my watch I tap into an app showcasing his vitals as I pair it to the link.
It occurs to me the link has not been paired the right with the device, I inform him quickly tapping a side of his head and the device starts to rev up.
Tumblr media
“There you go boss! Can you feel it?” I ask my boss moving back to no avail.
“Boss are you ok?” I ask waving my hand in his face.
“Yyyyeeeesssss!” He says mindlessly to mu surprise leaving me to freak out I then pair the watch again.
“Oh woah! Ready to be programmed.” Chris speaks in a monotone voice as he returns.
“Do you understand all the modifications that can happen?” I ask making sure he is aware.
“I have been modified by the mind link to do as commanded.” He continues.
“Well let’s see if I can find something very appropriate.” I add to it.
“Ahh! Perfect timing gnus script is worth a try.” I decide out loud
Tumblr media
“I would say it was nice to know you but you know.” I inform him once more staring into his eyes with evil glint and the file would be a victory.
Throwing the file onto the desk it is so titled
the phoenix profile stamped on it with bright red letters almost like blood stains so truly accurate to the situation.
“Why should I bother feeling guilty erasing you out of existence forever? If this works out well you will be mine for all eternity my dear boss.”
“Link command extending to your current type of specifications.”
“Uploading into the system now Pinewell processing it.”
“Beginning change and processing.”
“Sir Yes Master Sir”
“At your instructions.”

A cool airy breath blows in his face inhaling into his knows seeping up his nostrils into his body the air spreads through each nerve.
Jason can’t help it letting his head bend back with his eyes pop open staring into the sky and his moth exhales carbon dioxide out once and for all.
His entirety of his body discombobulating in shocking state flailing on the floor with the ghost figure in his body compound finally exploding everywhere.

MindBend
You love me, you crave me like a good book,
i read your subtitles with just one look,
i think we both wish i didn't give you advice,
right now we'd be here squeaking like mice,
things still wouldn't really be simple,
but both our cheeks would have a dimple,
i would be holding you kissing your face,
helping you deal with chaotic mind race,
maybe it helps that you are alone,
but i still feel your mind sneak in my zone,
what into this mess will in time evolve,
maybe we could our feelings resolve,
seems so impossible, situation is crazy,
in case i get your call, i won't be lazy,
i will be running like Wajdušna wind,
if you decide to rethink and rescind.

sometimes I read those fics where two characters are accidentally mind linked and they can hear each other’s thoughts and it usually goes like *accident that forms mind link* “oh no this is horrible” *tries to keep thoughts together and hidden* *one accidental revealing thought slips* *fluff or angst or whatever* anyways it usually ends with like romance or past abuse/horrible backstories being uncovered and stuff but I’m the person who thinks “what if someone’s reading my mind” when Im peacefully thinking like constantly so if I actually had a mink link with someone, I would probably have a legitimate panic attack and that’s when I realized how much of myself I hide from the people I know and love.

Trevor’s Lost Night
Tumblr media
Poor Trevor is this stupid Cowboy that I have met online to serve me over the longterm in to the future because he won’t quit with the messages and I agree to meet him the next month. I mean honestly I get off the airplane in to the airport as I rush down the escalator to the main door as they swung open and I walk in to the cold winter weather swirling past me. His arms open wide as he seems me ready for a embrace as he waltzes up to me in a bit of energy he swoops me up in his arms ever so tightly and lifts me in the air it is so embarrassing. He lets me down as we head toward his car at the end of the block and off we go as I am not sure what the hell we will get in to as of yet but it will surely be crazy for both of us.His car is driving through the gigantic gates soaring above us as we speeding down in to the compound as the radio blasts all of my favorite tunes until it comes to settle and we exit. The keys swinging in his hands as he opens up the door letting me in as it slams behind us happily, I can see deep down the relief in his eyes overtakes him and all he wants is to please me. He flips a switch as the lights comes to life blinding me as he kicks of his shoes he is all in sliding down to his feet and he places his hands on my waist staring up to me with utter love and desire. What the fuck is wrong with me? Why am I even willing to work with this guy? Why am I here? Right! He won’t stop pestering me this country ass guy who is hot as hell but so out of my league.

New piece for my Ocean's Echo fan characters! Masterpost is here.
“Um… Excuse me, are you Specialist Davi Antrell?”
Davi had just finished the cool-down routine on the exercise machine. The gym had been quietly bustling around him the whole workout, so he wasn’t as startled by the question as he might have been.
A woman with close-cropped hair and a simple flint charm hanging from a cord around her neck was standing a polite distance from him. She looked nervous, her hands fidgeting with each other.
Davi stepped off the machine, slinging his towel over his shoulder. “Yes, that’s me,” he said, flashing a grin. “How can I help you?”
The woman smiled in return, seeming a little less nervous. “Er, I’m Second Order Communications Corporal Elena,” she said. Well outside of Davi’s chain of command. “You, uh. You’re synced to Agent Thirty-two, aren’t you, sir?”
“Yes,” Davi said, surprised.
“I was hoping you might answer a few questions for me,” she said. “If it’s not too much trouble.”
“No, of course not, shoot,” Davi said, hiding the spark of unease that crept up his spine. A question about Saelin from a stranger probably wasn’t anything good.
“I’ve been running a, er, um, well it’s a war games tournament. We meet up in Rec Room Two every Thursday? It’s nothing particularly formal but it is a competition, been running for about two months now...”
“Yes, I know it,” Davi said. It was one of the few activities that Saelin ever came back from more relaxed than when he left. “Has Thirty-two been a problem?”
She looked guilty. “No, sir! Not… exactly. He’s not done anything wrong. It’s just…” She sighed. “I understand if you can’t talk much about what he does. Especially for something as trivial as this. But, some people have… suggested… that reader powers might give him an unfair advantage in the sort of games we play. They are strategy-based, not luck or hand-eye coordination.”
Davi raised an eyebrow. “You think he cheats?”
“I don’t, actually,” she said staunchly. “And I quite like him. But, well. He won a couple of games in a row and somebody did ask, so I had to say I’d follow it up. I’m sorry if this is a waste of your time.”
“No, no, it’s all right,” Davi said. He dragged a hand through his sweaty curls thoughtfully. "Look… I’d be really surprised if he was cheating. Partially because he’s under orders not to read the crew, and I would know if he disobeyed. Partially because he’s not really the type. But that doesn’t necessarily help you with your concerned contestants, does it?”
“If you say it’s not happening, sir, I’m happy to take your word for it,” she said. “Nobody would question your expertise.”
“To my face, at least,” Davi said, raising an eyebrow to include her in the small joke. “Hang on. Isn’t it Thursday today?” He knew it was; he’d seen the war games meetup on Saelin’s schedule, starting very soon.
She grimaced. “It is. Don’t feel pressured to give me an answer or anything today, though, sir - I know this is your rec time as well. It’s just that I saw you and…”
“Figured you could get to work on the problem before the next round, yeah,” Davi agreed readily. “Hold up a sec.”
He thought rapidly for a few moments, and Elena waited patiently.
It really wouldn’t fix the problem, he thought, for Corporal Elena to go back and tell a bunch of disgruntled sore losers that she’d asked the Pilot and he’d said not to worry about it. There was no proof either way, and people had all sorts of misconceptions about readers.
Gossip spread fast in a ship - especially in the kind of little hobby groups that formed in people’s spare time, where allegedly people of any rank or field of work were welcome. And people cared about their hobbies. This could get ugly.
No, he had better fix this.
“Listen, if you’re willing to wait a bit for me to clean up, I’ll come with you to Rec Room Two and get this sorted out,” he said.
The holographic tabletops of Rec Room Two were set up in some complicated grid pattern that Davi didn’t recognise, but the small crowd wasn’t seated at them playing yet; they were still in the milling about and socialising phase.
Davi spotted Saelin over in a corner, talking to a ranker with braided hair. He didn’t look animated, but he was engaged enough he hadn’t noticed Davi’s proximity yet, so presumably it was what he considered a fun conversation.
“If you grab a couple of people you trust to be witnesses,” he said to Elena, “I’ll call Thirty-two over, and we can duck out to the next room, it’ll be more private.”
“Yes,” she said, “That’s… for the best…” She hurried away - looking grateful, but also as if she was slightly regretting getting Davi involved.
Davi leaned against the wall. A few people had noticed him there, and were eyeing him with curiosity.
He reached across the sync bond and nudged Saelin gently; the mental equivalent of a tap on the shoulder. Across the room, the reader stopped mid-sentence, frowning.
His eyes swung to Davi’s, unerringly accurate. Davi jerked his head a little; come here.
It wasn’t that Saelin had ever asked him not to come to his strategy game meetups; it had just been one of the unspoken patterns their shared schedule had fallen into. There was no boundary being transgressed here… but as Saelin made his way across the room, the sync bond chill and empty, Davi suddenly wondered if that was how his reader would see it.
Elena was converging on them as well, with a pair of rankers trailing behind her.
“Davi,” Saelin said, and he looked pale and panicky. “I mean, sir. What are you…”
“Sorry,” Davi said. “I know I’m intruding. Don’t worry, I’ll get on my way in a moment and leave you to it. Corporal Elena just asked me for help settling a question.”
“You - ” Saelin glanced at the three other people, and forced whatever he’d been about to say back behind his lips. “Elena, is everything okay? I’m supposed to be playing Lex in two minutes…”
“Let’s step out for a second,” Davi suggested, and held the door open.
Luckily, Rec Room Three was currently unoccupied.
“I’m sorry to do this to you,” Elena said, awkwardly. “But, well. There have been some… anonymous concerns about, well, fairness, and…”
Saelin’s face closed off. He didn’t look surprised.
“You didn’t need to call my - my architect in to kick me out,” he said.
“Well, that’s not… I’m not going to do that with no evidence,” Elena protested. “That isn’t fair. Specialist Antrell thought that he could, uh, clear your name.”
At that, Saelin realised what Davi was proposing. Denial pulsed across the sync bond, furious agitation and distress that didn’t make it to Saelin’s face. “Architect powers aren’t admissible evidence,” he said, distant and cold.
“This isn’t a court of law,” Davi said. He winced internally; he knew this was going to be hard on Saelin. He knew how much of a blow it always was to the reader’s goodwill, to write him truthful. But it really was the most elegant solution. Couldn’t he see that? And it wasn’t like Davi was forcing it on him out of nowhere, like that first disastrous time in their quarters.
What was his problem? Had Davi been wrong to assume he had nothing to hide?
“It’s just an informal solution,” he said, pushing apology and sincerity across the bond. “We can get this out of the way, and you can get back to your game in five minutes. I’ve done this kind of thing before.” He wondered that it had never occurred to Elena; surely somebody in that room was a strong enough architect to settle disputes with it.
“I don’t - ” Saelin fell silent. His hands closed into fists, bunching the fabric of the uniform pants. “Of course,” he said, a touch of dry emotion creeping into his voice. “Now that you’ve suggested it, if I don’t agree I’ll be assumed guilty automatically. Won’t I?”
“That’s not the - ”
“All right, go on and get it over with, then,” Saelin said.
Davi sighed, pressed the command into Saelin’s mind. “Agent Thirty-two: answer all questions truthfully.” He usually didn’t say the command aloud, when he felt the need to do it; but this time, for the benefit of the uncomfortable-looking Corporal Elena and the two witnesses, he did.
Saelin rocked back a little on his heels, blinking hard. “Yes, sir,” he said.
“Have you ever used reader powers to gain an advantage in these strategy games?”
“No,” Saelin said, almost before Davi had finished speaking. “Never deliberately.”
His mouth twitched, then flattened. Davi pondered something about Saelin: under a write order, he didn’t seem capable of being misleading. Or omitting things that were relevant but hadn’t been specifically asked. That didn’t happen with other people Davi had written like this.
It was inconvenient in this instance. Davi had really been hoping for a clearer ‘no’.
“Never deliberately?” he asked. “What about accidentally?”
“You know that I feel people’s emotions all the time,” Saelin said, still quickly, as if eager to answer. He glanced at Elena and the rankers and away, colour rising in his face. “I can’t help that. I do my best to block everybody out during games, but something might sneak through from time to time. Not thoughts, just feelings. I don’t think that gives me an unfair advantage. If it ever did I’d throw the game.”
“Really? You’d throw it?” one of the rankers asked curiously. “Has that ever happened?”
“Yes, I would. Yes, it has happened, but not here on this ship,” Saelin said. “It happened three times in University games. I’ve gotten much better at staying focused since then.”
“I don’t think things that happened before your conscription are relevant,” Davi said, annoyed with himself that he’d neglected to specify only questions from Davi. That might be awkward. “To repeat: Do you read people’s minds to help you win these games?”
“No, never. I have never and I would never.”
That was more what Davi had hoped for. He looked to Elena. “Are you satisfied with that, Corporal?”
“I am,” she said. “That’s all we needed to know. You can stop… er…” She looked between Davi and Saelin. “Doing… that. Please.”
Davi removed the command, dismissing it with a tiny expenditure of effort. If Saelin was going to be here playing for hours, there was no sense in keeping it active.
Well, that had been a little trickier than Davi was anticipating, but it had still worked. Problem solved; Davi was good at solving problems. He wondered if Elena was one of those people who were uncomfortable with architects as well as readers; she wouldn’t make it very far up the ranks, if so.
“I’ll leave you to it, then,” he said briskly. “I wish you well with your tournament.May the best player win, and all.”
“Thank you for your help, sir,” Corporal Elena said. “I... Thank you for taking the time.”
“Not a problem! Good luck, Saelin.”
He might have smiled at his reader, but Saelin was staring at the ground, his face white and red in blotches.
As the door closed behind Davi, he heard hushed voices start up behind it.
The tournament was supposed to last for at least two hours; but not half of one had gone by when Davi felt Saelin approaching their quarters.
Davi looked up, startled, as the door hissed open. “Hey,” he said. “What, you lost already?”
“I quit the tournament,” Saelin said, sounding low and strangled. “Actually.”
Davi watched him stamp across the cabin and into the tiny bathroom, baffled. He resisted the urge to follow and demand answers. Why on Earth would you…
He decided to leave his reader alone, and managed to hold to that all the way until he’d finished writing his letter to his family.
Saelin had undressed and gone to bed by the time Davi had checked tomorrow’s schedule, flicked his wristband and the light switch off, and leaned back in his own bunk.
“Did you really lose games on purpose?” Davi asked, into the darkness.
He half thought the reader wouldn’t answer. But…
“Once or twice,” Saelin said shortly.
“Why?”
Saelin turned his head, the sheets rustling. “Because I’d accidentally read my opponent’s next moves. You don’t think that’s unethical?”
“No, it is, I just…”
“Oh. So it’s not that you’re fine with cheating,” Saelin said. “You just assumed that I would be. Thanks.”
“Don’t be like that,” Davi said, frustrated. “I knew you weren’t cheating. I wouldn’t have suggested testing it like that if I thought there was a real chance you’d say yes.”
“Then why are you badgering me about a handful of matches that happened years and years before you even met me?” Saelin rolled over, turning his back to the room. “Just because information comes out under write command doesn’t mean it’s important or that I owe you an explanation.”
It’s just that going out of your way to lose when you think you don’t deserve the win is… different to being unwilling to deliberately cheat, Davi thought. It was a stubborn kind of honour code. And it fit surprisingly well into the mind that Davi was starting to learn his way around.
But this wasn’t really the problem that was lurking and looming around Saelin’s mind. It wasn’t what he was angry about.
“You shouldn’t have quit,” Davi said. “Look, I - I thought I was helping. The group seemed like it was good for you, and - ”
“You didn’t. Help me.”
“Well, yes, that much is obvious now,” Davi said, exasperated, propping himself up on one elbow in bed. “And I’m sorry, okay? But don’t cut off your own social outlet because you’re pissed off at me. That’s fucking dumb and you know it.”
“I’m not just pissed off at you. I am never not pissed off at you. My brain is a highly specialised product of advanced military technological meddling, I think I have the multi-tasking capacity to be pissed off with multiple people at once!”
Stormy silence followed this hissed speech.
Davi waited.
“You and your high-handed humiliating fucking help are beside the point,” Saelin said, finally. “No matter what you’d done, you couldn’t have fixed it. I don’t want to prove that I didn’t cheat. I want them not to have accused me in the first place. I shouldn’t need to be written in front of everybody to earn the right to be there.”
“Not everybody,” Davi pointed out. “Like two people.”
“Maybe I don’t want to socialise with people who think I’d do that.”
“Well, that was also like two people,” Davi said. “Elena said outright she didn’t believe it, but she had to look into it anyway.”
“The rest think about it. They just don’t say anything.”
“Did you overhear that?”
“I don’t need to.”
Davi sighed. “Listen. I’m not going to insist about it, but… I really think you should reconsider. I’m sure some of those people in there liked you.”
“Your opinion is noted. Am I allowed to sleep now?”
“… you know that I… no, look. All right. I’m sorry. Good night.”
