So I’m really really enjoying @mayhemchicken / @lxgentlefolkcomic ‘s comic “The League of Extraordinary Gentlefolk” which is everything I wanted the Moore comic to be (e.g. actually faithful to the characters personalities in the canon books) and so of course I had to design a fancy cover for it xD
Tumblr media
The profiles are of the characters that have been said to make up the main team in the comic (not all have shown up yet) but there’s Irene Adler-Norton on top, the two happily married Harkers side by side beneath her, the Invisible Man in the middle with Dr Seward on the right and Dr Jekyll (with the shadow of Hyde) on the left and Capt. Nemo in the bottom!
Please go check out the comic @lxgentlefolkcomic , it’s on its first chapter and already soooo good!

I just think that it's possible to make a Dracula adaptation that is by and large faithful to the characters and elevates their arcs like the Granada Sherlock Holmes series, The Sherlock Holmes film series (1939–1946), or the Poirot TV series and that it's not unreasonable to believe that it is possible to do so. Actually.
Those series do have some changes, and they're generally ones that book fans endorse.
And then there are adaptations like Sherlock (2010-2017) or Death On The Nile (2022) which diverge from the source and leave book fans baffled and unable to find significantly praiseworthy things about. Or on the other hand series like Elementary, which gets much better reception from book fans despite its vast setting divergence.
Meanwhile for Dracula, it appears that there are dozens upon dozens of Moffat Sherlock ones, 0 Granada Holmes ones, and maybe one Elementary one as a podcast. Of course people will want better.

Mina's last name was Murray.
In the very beginning of A Study in Scarlet, Watson mentions an orderly named Murray who saved his life.
I saw a post somewhere suggesting that Murray was Mina's father. I really like that idea. I would want to write a fic about it, only I have no idea what it would be about. All I can think of is Murray dying of his injuries, and asking Watson to make sure whatever money he has goes to his daughter, so Watson arranges it that Mina gets sent to school so she'll be taken care of and can later provide for herself, with whatever she inherited from her father paying for her tuition (and Sherlock Holmes generously donating a few years later when Watson mentioned how the daughter of his old friend didn't have enough left of her inheritance to complete her schooling).

Those "Sherlock Holmes is public domain and can freely be in any crossover now" memes made me think of how he'd be involved in Dracula because the characters, Jonathan and Mina especially, are incredibly suspicious
-On the 17th of August Mina says that Hawkins took Jonathan and Mina to his own house and wants them both to live there with him, informing them that it's theirs in his will. He said, "I have left to me neither chick nor child; all are gone". So all blood relatives are gone... how did they all disappear? And so, the law firm will belong to Jonathan once he's also gone, too.
-The very next day he's dead. Mina and Jonathan are homeowners now, and Jonathan owns the business. She says Hawkins "left him a fortune which to people of our modest bringing up is wealth beyond the dream of avarice". There seems to have been a longing for financial stability they never had, now resolved.
-A few weeks later, Jonathan is seen around the city and at the docks with a weapon asking for the whereabouts of an aristocrat, bribing sailors, and lurking around houses with a bunch of men. He disappears with his wife for over a month.
And when he returns it must have been a sight
Law firm employee 1: I'm telling you these two orphans murdered the boss and maybe his entire family! And where have they been for this long?
Law firm employee 2: Come on, Harker has always been such a meek, peaceful kid and-
Jonathan, shellshocked, knife at the hip, gaze that says "Just killed a man and looked at him in the eye as he turned to ash": Sorry I kept you waiting I'm back now :)
Law firm employees: Welcome back Sir we are loyal to you till death and will never ever question your actions or motives!
So someone especially brave goes and lets Sherlock Holmes know about this solicitor and his highly intelligent wife who is probably behind everything.

Do you wanna be my boyfriend? Do you wanna be my boyfriend? Do you wanna be my boyfriend? Do you wanna be my boyfriend?
You're not just any type of girl My one true love And you're my world
Something about the nebulous nature of gender across three of my favorite classic characters and the ones who love* them.
*Love here including the good, the bad, and the gothic.
Pictured top to bottom:
Irene Norton, formerly Adler, and Godfrey Norton of Sherlock Holmes' "A Scandal in Bohemia"
Jonathan Harker, Dracula, and Mina Harker, of Dracula
Henry Clerval, Victor Frankenstein, Elizabeth Lavenza, and the Creature, of Frankenstein

If I had a nickel for every time there was a podcast adaptation of a classic literary piece I like, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice

Mina really read Lucy's memorandum about a wolf attack, bought London newspapers dating back that day after, found a report about a zoo wolf escape, connected the dots, and clipped it out.
Lady journalist! Or lady Sherlock Holmes.

I just want to say for anyone unaware- 1897 is in the middle of the Great Hiatus, so Jonathan and Mina have to deal with Dracula all while living in a world without new Sherlock Holmes stories.

Dialogue transcripts:
Panel 1
Watson: Speaking of new friends, I daresay the group was as queer as the case! It seems to me you didn’t even find the invisible fellow the most curious of them.
Holmes: Ah, you noticed that, did you?
Panel 2
Holmes (voiceover): Indeed, they’re quite a peculiar gathering… many traits to spark the curiosity.
Panel 3
Watson: That aside, I am glad you were able to meet Irene Norton again, under less dubious circumstances.
Holmes:  As am I. That wasn’t my proudest moment, was it?
Panel 4
Holmes: I’m relieved that she has asked me to stay in touch.
Watson: Oh? So she and her husband are settling down in London?
Panel 5
Holmes (voiceover): They are; and she has stated, quite firmly, that I owe them a proper wedding.
Panel 6
Holmes: I have composed a list of venues to suggest to the bride. Do help me compose my reply?
Watson: Of course! Let me fetch the writing-paper…
Panel 7
Holmes (voiceover): Dear Mrs. Norton, I am writing to tell you…

I was reading up on Alan Moore and how he wrote League of Extraordinary Gentleman and how he chose Mina Murray as his "woman character" because he wanted a woman character and there was a "genius woman" in Sherlock Holmes but she was "too obscure." Irene Adler too obscure?!   I knew who Irene Adler was before I knew who Alan Quartermaine was!   If you're trying to use a graphic novel to entice people into reading the literary classics why idiot proof it?   It would be one thing if he kept Mina a vampire but he didn't.  In League of Extraordinary Gentleman she's mortal (except in the film version) but no, he chose her because he felt people would recognize the name.   Hardly.   There are people who didn't realize who Mina and Jonathan Harker were in The Invitation (2022).  Never underestimate ignorance when it comes to literature.   What I'm saying is, he should have stuck with using Irene.  He wanted a super genius woman, she actually was one.   And today I think (thanks partly to the Sherlock pop culture spike a few years ago) Irene is more well-known than Mina.

The Foggs: And then Jean walked me down the aisle to Phileas. The bells rang loudly as we all stepped out of the church gates.
The Nortons: We didn't have time for walking down the aisle, or for bells, we had to enter and leave the church immediately.
The Harkers: You guys got married in a church?
