Godfrey: So Professor Aronnax was the one the Captain spoke of…he was so sure that he had spread his secrets!  Yet love kept his lips sealed…

Jack:  It doesn’t disprove Captain Nemo’s theory of another submarine, but it makes it far less likely.

Arthur:  Where does that leave us?

Panel 3

Jonathan:  We follow the clues we have.  I told the Captain that we would search on land while he searches the ocean—

Jonathan: He even gave me this.

Panel 4

Jonathan: He said that once we activate it, he could trace its signal anywhere in the world.

Griffin:  You can’t be serious!  That such a thing is possible—Did he give you just the one?  If not I could disassemble—

Quincey:  But first we need something to report. Seems like this tiger-head ship’s the ticket.

Irene:  It didn’t seem relevant before, but a ship of that description passed us by after the storm.  Lord Godalming, you mentioned you knew the owner?

Arthur: Colonel Sebastian Moran: big-game hunter and top-notch tosser.

Arthur:  But beyond that, I don’t know much about the man. We don’t quite mingle in the same company.

Irene:  A pity Mr. Holmes is out of the country. He and Dr. Watson were engaged by some lord to look into some odd tomb-robbings in Bavaria.

Quincey: There’s somethin’ I don’t get. Why’s the professor so tight-lipped about it all? With a story like that, he’d be known the world over.

Jekyll: I hesitate to discuss it in…mixed company.

Mina: I assure you, Doctor, it will go no further than this room.

Jekyll: Very well. To put it delicately, the French are…somewhat more liberal on certain matters than the English. I believe the professor was…very fond of the captain.

Griffin: It would take a lot more than fondness to keep a secret like that! Maybe bribery? Blackmail?

Irene: He means they were in love, Griffin.

Griffin: Ohh! Then why didn’t you just say so?

Jekyll: I, er, I felt it was…I mean…I didn’t wish to shock anyone…

Mina: That is hardly a shock, Dr. Jekyll. That is, let’s say I have encountered it before.

Jekyll: Who would you know…

Arthur: Three, once we save Jack.

Quincey:  They’re on their way home!  All three of them!

HOLY SHIT

So I’m really really enjoying @mayhemchicken / @lxgentlefolkcomic ‘s comic “The League of Extraordinary Gentlefolk” which is everything I wanted the Moore comic to be (e.g. actually faithful to the characters personalities in the canon books) and so of course I had to design a fancy cover for it xD

The profiles are of the characters that have been said to make up the main team in the comic (not all have shown up yet) but there’s Irene Adler-Norton on top, the two happily married Harkers side by side beneath her, the Invisible Man in the middle with Dr Seward on the right and Dr Jekyll (with the shadow of Hyde) on the left and Capt. Nemo in the bottom!

Jekyll: This diary… has been most elucidating, I will not deny. It certainly explains the attacks of a few years ago, but not the most recent attacks.

Irene (offscreen): Why not?

Panel 2

Jekyll: That greenish substance, for one. You mentioned it was found on the wreckage of these attacks, but the good professor makes no mention of it—only of an electric light, which would leave no such residue.

Panel 3

Irene: A light—! I thought I saw one beneath the water during the storm, when we were trying to find…

Mina: Please, Dr. Jekyll, tell us all you can.

Panel 4

Jekyll: *sigh* Very well. As you suspected, Mrs. Norton, there is far more to Professor Aronnax’s journey than he has shared publicly, beginning from the moment he was lost overboard.

Jekyll, narrating: They were saved in an extraordinary fashion—brought aboard a vessel that travels under the sea. The captain, who called himself ‘Nemo’, was… a queer fellow, with many secrets. He refused to release them, lest the secret of his existence be discovered.

Panel 6

Griffin: A submarine! The old man’s less dull than I thought! How’d he get away, after all that?

Jekyll: He released them, though not until after seriously endangering their lives.

Panel 7

Jekyll, narrating: The three men were treated well—the professor most of all. Yet while voyaging near the South Pole, the ship became trapped under the ice, and the professor nearly suffocated. The captain became moody and avoided their company; then without explanation, freed them on an island off the coast of South America.

Irene: Certainly nothing like this!  It’s half a novel, half scientific gobbledygook.  What about you?

Jekyll: Well, I’ve read a few scientific papers and a novel or two, but…

Jekyll: …No!  I told you, I won’t be party to this intrusion!

Mina: Doctor, I don’t like it either…but if he knows something, we could save lives, and not just our husbands’.

Mina:  We’ll minimize exposure.  You don’t have to translate all of it, not the most private parts.  And once you’ve finished, we’ll take it right back.

Jekyll:  Fine, fine.  I’ll skim through it for anything useful.

Mina:  Mr. Griffin…

Griffin:  Your husbands go overboard, and all you do is slink home to cry about it?  Just leaving Harker—a-and the others—leaving them behind to drown?

Irene:  You go too far—

Jekyll:  Mr. Griffin, that’s enough!  I understand you’re worried for Mr. Harker, but this behavior is unbecoming of a man of science—and it will do your friend no good.

Mina:  We’re all exhausted, and the stress is telling on us.  Let’s sit down and have some food, and we’ll be at our best to plan a rescue.

Griffin (offscreen):  F-friend!?  He’s not my—

Irene:  Mina, dear…

Mina:  What is it, Irene?

Irene:  It’s just…Don’t overwork yourself.  And let me know if…if you need anything.

Mina:  Right…first, we need information.  Irene, your notes on Professor Aronnax said you felt there was more to learn from him?

Irene:  I did. There were so many holes in his story, and even though Godfrey can’t…couldn’t speak French, he could tell the Professor was anxious and conflicted.

Griffin:  That’s it! We just need to wring the truth out of this shifty professor!  Give me half a minute with him, I bet I could have him singing like a—

Mina:  Mr. Griffin, please.  Go on, Irene.

Panel 5

Irene:  Luckily, he invited us back before our visit ended.  If I interviewed him again, surely the news that our husbands are missing because of this thing will jar him from his silence.

Griffin:  More likely that he’d simply lie again. Whatever held his tongue before, another sob story won’t loosen it!

Mina:  Even if that’s true, we’re not going to—to attack or kidnap a man over it, Mr. Griffin.

Griffin: Well…what about that journal Norton saw, then?  That might be useful.

Irene:  Ah, yes—Godfrey saw a waterlogged book labelled as a journal in his bookcase. We thought it might be his diary from his time at sea.

Arthur: If he wouldn't tell you the truth himself, he'd hardly hand over his diary.

Irene: We're not saying he would...
