WIP Wednesday: Rescue the Farmboy: Mission on Mimban
Tumblr media
I have finished the first draft of Mission on Mimban, the next novel in the Rescue the Farmboy series. I still have editing to do so crossing fingers I get to post it this year.
Luke Skywalker pushed the hyperdrive lever of his X-wing, returning the snub-fighter to subspace. A murky green-white sphere sat ahead with its star, Circarpous Major, angled behind him so they approached the planet’s dayside.
He frowned at the transponder in his cockpit. Mara’s presence in his mind approached. The transponder pinged as her X-wing rippled into existence on his port side.
“Rogue Three reporting in,” Mara Jade said crisply over the comms.
“Rogue Leader acknowledges,” Luke answered. “Ready to explore?”
The Force bond between them reverberated with her unease. “Is enthusiasm required for this mission?”
“Not required, but you can have fun. I don’t want to order you to have fun, so don’t make me.” He had gotten used to broadcasting his goodwill along with those teases, so he did. In the two months since the Battle of Yavin, Mara had decided it was more dignified to not answer in kind. While it was better than deciding the teasing was a verbal attack and responding brutally, he wasn’t sure how the stoicism was going to hold up against other members of the Rogue Squadron.
Mara opted to ignore his teasing. “All readings are coming up terrestrial within the parameters as optimal for the Alliance’s needs.”
“That’s good.” No sense setting up a base on a planet where the oxygen-breathers couldn’t breathe. “You don’t have a datapad out while you’re flying, do you?”
“Of course not,” Mara retorted with a tinge of smugness. “The astromech is flying.”
Luke shook his head and led the way into Circarpous 5’s gravity well. They would have the report filled out in no time with Mara’s focus. Maybe he would have to order her to have fun; if he could ever get out of her what she found enjoyable.
Her smugness descended into a different unease from her earlier fear of blundering. “Rogue Leader, didn’t the mission purview say this planet was undeveloped?”
“Not even a repair station. Why?”
“Shift your comm monitor to frequency oh-four-six-one.”
He did, and a steady whine filled his cockpit. “That’s a directional landing beacon. Maybe smugglers or pirates have set up a base here. We have to know for sure before rejecting the planet for our needs.”
“Copy that,” Mara said.
They descended into the atmosphere. The Force tingled against the back of Luke’s neck. Was that his danger sense? General Willard had stressed they actually had to explore the planet and not avoid it because “the Force said so.”
They had to continue down, but they should take Force observations into account too. He hit the comm. “Rogue Three, how do you feel?”
“Landing here is the worst idea, Rogue Leader.” It sounded like she was speaking through clenched teeth. “Mission parameters don’t allow for the Force to abort.”
“I’m aware,” Luke answered. “We should put it in the report that we both feel it. Continue descent.”
“Aye, Boss.”
He smiled despite how he felt. That was the first time she had used the Alliance slang.

This is the best kind of fanfiction: it takes the source material and and while staying true to it plays with it and offers your own interpretation; it weaves the fanfic into the overall story arc and by that in turn enriches canon.

Cassian Andor taking on an Imperial garrison…
Tumblr media
The subtle use of echoing lines in Andor (frequently right through to Rogue One) is so well done, and one example shows Cassian’s character development very clearly…
Tumblr media
When Cassian is first being briefed by Vel about the heist on Aldhani, he reacts with horror at the news about there being an Imperial garrison nearby. Luthen didn’t mention it, and you get the sense that he might not have agreed to take on the job had he known about this extra danger . But of course, he commits and the heist is a success – of a kind.
But afterwards… he doesn’t want to do anything like that again. He wants to “win and walk away” to “somewhere warm and easy” . The irony is – his actions have helped to inspire Maarva, who refuses to leave Ferrix - while praising the actions of the “brave” “heroes” of Aldhani. She’s just indirectly praised him, and you can see that he’s delighted by a split second little spontaneous smile of pleasure that he quickly suppresses. Ouch. He’s finally done something she could be proud of, but he doesn’t want to give her a reason to stay so he has to stay quiet.
Tumblr media
^ Awww 😞
But what’s really interesting is the editing in this masterful and moving scene. On Maarva’s words ‘If there are heroes brave enough to take on a whole Imperial garrison I’m brave enough to stick it out here” we see the flashback of 13 year old Cassian approaching the Troopers with a cudgel, revealing at long last the details of the assault that landed him in youth prison for three years and Mimban after that. The horrifying execution of Clem combined with the injustice and pain of his own punishment has not just traumatised the adult Cassian, it’s also made him somebody who will now avoid a conflict – and therefore the Rebellion– wherever possible.
Tumblr media
‘It’s all useless… it’s better to live!’ is what he told Luthen before Aldhani, but the precise placing of the shot here is very telling.
Cassian is starting to subconsciously associate that act with bravery rather than recklessness. He hates the Empire for what they did to Clem but it has so far translated to trying to ‘live’ and ignore them as much as possible; but his teenage self wanted to fight, to get revenge. Nonetheless it was an emotional response, an impulsive act that was not thought through. This is in total contrast to the calm methodical shots of Wilmon Paak preparing the bomb at the start of Episode 12. Wilmon is balancing emotion with rationality in planning his own revenge, in an arc which otherwise is like a replay of Cassian’s own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later in Episode 12 Cassian hears from Brasso his mother’s last words for him - all proof not just of how much she loved him but of how much she knew him too. He does indeed now ‘know everything he needs to know and feel everything he needs to feel’. His reasoning and his emotions are now able to work together to be that ‘unstoppable force for good’. He won’t be making emotional but futile attacks like rushing armed Troopers with a stick anymore. He will think, plan, observe and react. But he will act. He is not going to walk away any more. And he’s not going to leave loved ones behind if he can help it…
…Because in a final bit of lines-linking brilliance - immediately after hearing these words of his mother, Cassian prepares to go into the hotel, via the tunnels she checked were open, to rescue Bix.
Incredulous, Brasso says: “Are you going to take on a whole garrison?”
Tumblr media
And Cassian doesn’t verbally reply. The look says it all. ‘I’ve done it before, twice, l’ll do it again, and I’m doing it now.’
It sums up Cassian’s arc so well. From oppression, to fighting back, to running from the fight, to taking up the fight again (now an even more exact mirror of Jyn Erso’s arc too). But this time… having learnt from experience. One lesson being: teamwork matters…
…Because thanks to Brasso and the riot the Troopers are ordered out of the Rix hotel, which is the Empire’s base. Making it possible for Cassian to extract Bix, with the “Imperial garrison” deployed elsewhere. A technique so effective, it will also be used on Scarif to give Jyn, K2SO and himself a chance to reach the data files.
“Light it up …
..Make ten men feel like a hundred “
And that’s how you make a realistic hero. Cassian is somebody who learns and grows despite some bitter experiences.
Tumblr media
Better deploy that garrison, because Cassian Andor is taking it on.

WIP Progress report
Half the year is done and I have been busy.
January 2024 & June 2024: Trigun: Three of a Kind -- I have finished my edits and it is with my beta reader.
February 2024: Cookbook -- this project is mostly me consolidating collecting recipes into a Scrivener cookbook project. It only gets worked on when I have nothing else to do. February had vacation to Universal Studios and uploads to Ao3, but I got caught up in writing what I call ad posts for DUF and Tumblr and forgot that there are still six old stories and thirteen fanmixes to upload. Oops.
March 2024: Biker Mice From Mars: Wars Are Won: Sacrifice of Happiness -- finished the first draft.
March 2024: Biker Mice From Mars: Evil Jack: Till Death Do We Part -- finished the first draft.
April 2024: Strix: Forget the Sun -- still writing the first draft.
May 2024: Star Wars: Rescue the Farmboy: Mission on Mimban -- finished my edits and it is with my beta reader.
July 2024: BookWorm's Library update -- this one has turned into some behind the scenes changes to make things easier for me in the future when I really didn't have stories ready to be published. But I did find the FanFiction Garret files, so I can add that section with the next update.
August 2024: Finished my edits on Evil Jack: Till Death Do You Part and it's with my beta reader now. Tweaked the future stories order in the Wars Are Won By Those Who Dare series. But my edits on Wars Are Won: Sacrifice of Happiness ended up having to taking a new course in the second draft. I forgot about complications in the story itself because I was so busy setting up future payoffs.
This is my third year focusing (as best I can) on one project a month before jumping to a new one, and I am starting to see results in so many projects. Getting the Library's website updated with new material is a huge one, along with getting back to old fandoms. Plans for the rest of the year:
September 2024: back to writing Strix: Forget the Sun
October 2024: finish the edits on Rescue the Farmboy: Mission on Mimban and start posting it.
November 2024: finish the edits on Trigun: Three of a Kind and start posting it.
December 2024: back to updating the BookWorm's Library and I should have stories ready to go on it by then.
I hope the next four months are productive for you too.

Part 4 is up (i.e. Mimban has entered the chat)!
(also posted a shorter transition chapter on Wednesday night, it’s very depressing)
Fic is done aside from minor proofread-y edits. [please clap] Parts 5&6 shall make their appearances next week. The last two parts are kind of monsters, the whole thing came up to 42-43k words. End of part 6 might split off into a separate conclusion piece but either way the rest will be up next week.

So I was thinking about Cassian Andor, as one does, and here is a brief series of thoughts:
1. You know how in episode 12 when he sneaks into the hotel kitchen in order to break out Bix during the funeral and surprises that cook? Cass not only recognizes him, but knows his name, and the cook knows him well enough to immediately say, "I'm sorry about your mom."
2. I therefore have decided that Cass and the cook guy (Temik? Terek? Something like that, anyway) had worked together at some point. I don't think Cass has ever been much for steady, on-the-books employment, but I think that when he came back to Ferrix after Sipu and Mimban and whatever he did in that eighteen month gap after, he sometimes worked as a cook.
(3. He lies to Luthen about how long he was on Mimban, because he lies to everyone about how long he was on Mimban, which means he didn't go back to Ferrix after those six months in the mud as a cook when he was sixteen. He went somewhere else, and it's either not something he's proud of or it's illegal enough to get him in real trouble. Or both.)
(4. I think he ran jobs to make money for the first bit after Mimban, learning some Dubious Skills, and then I think he tried to go to Kenari. And I do not think it went well, which is what prompted him to return to Ferrix.)
5. Anyway. When he comes back, he's a mess. He's smart, sure, and capable, but what sort of steady employment would be available to someone who had maybe two or three years or formal education, spent three years in juvie, and then two year supposedly conscripted into the military? He's going to come back to Ferrix traumatized and very, very good with knives. And with at least some basic culinary knowledge, so-- why not cook? But I doubt he'd be willing or able to tolerate the power struggles of a kitchen for long at this point-- self-control does not seem to be a delevoped skill quite yet. So I imagine he's in and out of line cook jobs on the regular, whenever he needs the cash-- until everyone's patience starts to wear thin.
6. But I bet folks still hire him on because (a) it doesn't matter how stupidly complicated the order is, Cass gets it right every time, (b) he might snarl at the head cook or other line cooks, but he's nice to the bus boys and servers, (c) his station is obsessively neat, (d) he brings his own knives and they are VERY nice, and (e) he is good in a crisis-- like, suspiciously good at dealing with scary deep knife wounds and such.
7. But he's absolutely going to ghost you after about three and a half weeks.
