L3-37 from Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Voiced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Fights for the rights of droids. Partners with Lando Calrissian, in crime AND in love (it works). Sharp wit
The feminine voice coupled with the suggestion of wide hips was enough to spark some fans’ circuits or whatever. They got horny. But it was also good enough for the charismatic Lando, and their chemistry highlighted L3’s appeal

Solo: A Star Wars Story premiered on May 25th, 2018. The screenplay was by Jonathon and Lawrence Kasdan. Lawrence Kasden had previously scripted the Star Wars films Episode V: The Empire Strikes back, Episode VI The Return of the Jedi, and Episode VII The Force Awakens. There was some debate over who was going to be listed officially as director. Ultimately, Ron Howard, who reshot 80% of the original footage, was given credit and the original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were given executive producer credits. The movie took place between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story/Episode IV: A New Hope. The movie told how Han Solo (originally played by Harrison Ford, but in this version played by Alden Ehrenreich) left Corellia, joined the Emperial Infantry, met Chewbacca (originally played by Peter Mayhew, but in this version by Joonas Suotamo), became a smuggler, met Lando Calrissian (originally played by Billy Dee Williams, but in this version by Donald Glover), made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, got his hand blaster, got the disguise that Lando would use in Jobba's palace, got the Millinium Falcon, and why the Millinium Falcon had a unique dialogue pattern. The film kept it as a surprise that it also had the first cinematic appearance of Darth Maul (still protrayed by Ray Park and voiced by Sam Witwer) since his supposed death in Episode I: A Phantom Menace. The movie also introduced new characters to the Star Wars cinematic universe such as Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson), Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke), Val (Thandiwe Newton), L3-37 (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany), Rio Durant (Jon Favreau), Enfys Nest (Erin Kellyman), Lady Proxima (Linda Hunt), Rebolt (Ian Kenny), Korso (John Tui), Weazel (Warwick Davis), Margo (Charlotte Louise), Chanteuse (Sema-Tawi Smart), Ralakili (Clint Howard), Quay Tolsite (Dee Tails), Sagwa (Attila Vajda), Tak (Anthony Daniels), Karjj (Kiran Shah), Eager Scrumrat (Fraser Kelly), Lexi (Lily Newmark), Ottilie (Samantha Colley), and Argus Panox (Derek Arnold). The reaction to the film did not meet expectations and delayed and changed the plans for further theatrical Star Wars Story films. ("Solo: A Star Wars Story", flm, event)

This Month In History - May
What a month this is for landmark anniversaries! Here’s a few I’m toasting:
May 3, 1988: Vivid released
Tumblr media
In May 1988 the debut album from Living Colour was released. I’ve written about LC quite a bit, but this is my favorite of their albums. Here is my piece I wrote in 2013. Happy 35 Vivid!
May 5, 2003: Welcome to the Monkey House released
Tumblr media
In May 2003, the 4th album by The Dandy Warhols was released. I was a big fan of their previous albums and I picked this one up in mid-2003. The band is seriously getting their new wave on more so than their previous albums. The label wasn’t happy with the mix of the initial recording, so the one that was released in 2003 was mixed by Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran. In 2009, the band independently released the original mix as The Dandy Warhols Are Sound. Regardless of what the band thinks, I kind of liked the Nick Rhodes version. Maybe it’s slick and glossy, but the infectious hooks stay in your head long after listening. Happy 20th WTTMH!
May 12, 2008: Narrow Stairs released
Tumblr media
In May 2008, the 6th album from Death Cab for Cutie was released. The band was in their prime following a string of indie rock albums in the 00s and they were now on a major label and the album debuted at #1. When I saw the band live last year, among the highlights were some of the songs off this album. It’s one of my favorites in their discography. Happy 15th Narrow Stairs!
May 24, 2013: Before Midnight opens
Tumblr media
In May 2013, the 3rd film in Richard Linklater’s Before series opened. I named this my #2 Movie of 2013. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 10 Before Midnight!
May 25, 1983: Return of the Jedi opens
Tumblr media
There are loads of Star Wars anniversaries in the month of May, but the big one this month is Episode 6, released in May 1983. Because I saw this when I was 7 and loved it so much, it remains one of my favorites. Here is my piece I wrote in 2013. Happy 40th ROTJ!
May 25, 2018: Solo: A Star Wars Story opens
Tumblr media
Speaking of Star Wars anniversaries, the Han Solo prequel (took place pre-Episode 4) was released in May 2018. At the time, it got a bad rap, but since then there’s been a growing fanbase for it. There were some great set pieces and it filled in the gaps like how Han and Chewbacca met! I included it in my Best Movies of 2018. Happy 5 Solo!

It seems like you're a big fan of Warwick Davis, I was wondering if there are any other little people actors you really like, especially women and trans/nb actors?
Hello! Yes I do enjoy Warwick Davis! Willow (1988) remains one of my favourite LP films, and I've really enjoyed his career of fantastical characters.
Like a lot of industries, white men make up a lot of the most famous Little actors (Warwick Davis, Peter Dinklage, Danny Woodburn, Martin Klebba, Verne Troyer), so I'm happy to mention some of my favourites outside that group!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Linda Hunt is a favourite of mine - she's a Hollywood veteran best known for her role in The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) where she was the first actor to win an academy award for playing someone of the opposite sex!! She's been on Broadway, done tv, film, and voice acting! You may know her as Lady Proxima in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you think you don't know Deep Roy, chances are you do! He's been a scale actor in countless award winning films including Star Wars (1980), Star Trek (2009-2016), The Never Ending Story (1984), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and so many more! We owe so many beloved characters to scale actors and people hardly know it - Deep Roy has been responsible for dozens of them, I adore him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite Patty Maloney's vast career in acting, I know her as Lois Addams from The Addams Family (1991)! Before my time she was in a variety of tv shows and films including Star Trek Voyager (1996), Little House on the Prairie (1982), and The Lord of the Rings (1978).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cara Mailey is a young actress, author, presenter and activist! She's known for her role in Derry Girls (2018) and Read all About It! (2021), as well as her ebook "I Got This" - which speaks on her experience living with Achondroplasia. I wanted to be sure to give her an honourable mention because at only fifteen she's already become an activist for the LP community! I'm excited to see how her career evolves!
Thank you for the ask! Be sure to check these folks out!

I've been racking my brain, so figured I'd ask you: is there a Black woman in a live action Star Wars movie or TV show, shown in a romantic relationship with *anyone*? Anyone? since 1977?
Thandiwe Newton played Val in 2018 solo star wars story. HOWEVER!!! SHE WAS KILLED IN THE SAME GOTDAMN MOVIE.
Tumblr media
So like there's one but she dies.
Oh also lizzo in an episode of mandalorian where her character is married to Jack blacks character.
Tumblr media
But the backlash was bad for lizzos cameo.

Hi! I was looking to see if you know of many comics with Batman's villains at the lead!? (Besides Harley and Selina, who've had multiple series and are pretty easy to find). Other than the "Joker" Novel and Penguin: Pain and prejudice, i couldn't find any. Any good suggestions for Joker, Ivy, Two-Face, or any other villian from the Batman universe?
the tldr is that Ivy has several, Two-Face has a handful, the al Ghuls have a couple, and everyone else has had a couple of single issues starring them.
In general, the Batman Arkham series functions as a Batman Rogues Gallery "Greatest Hits" collection. While most of the stories collected in these trades don't feature the rogues as a protagonist, they all explore the characters and their backstories/motivations and feature them in a starring role!
On principle, I generally refuse to recommend Joker comics. Clown man has enough stuff starring him and they're generally easy enough to find without me promoting him more than he already is. Also, to be honest with you I occasionally go out of my way to avoid stuff starring him because he's frankly bored me ever since DC decided to emphasize him as a psychopathic serial killer instead of a funny villain with a clown gimmick.
However, The Joker's Five-Way Revenge (Batman vol. 1 #251) is a fun read, Joker: The Man Who Laughs and Joker's Last Laugh are both good, and Batman: The War of Jokes and Riddles is decent as well. Another fun one that's a little out of the box is Superman: Emperor Joker.
Other than that...I generally recommend the following for Ivy:
Batman Arkham: Poison Ivy (basically an 'Ivy Greatest Hits' collection)
Batman: Poison Ivy (1997)
No Man's Land (yes, it's long. No, Ivy's not a 'lead'. yes, it's also ground zero for Ivy's redemption arc and features her in a major role)
Gotham City Sirens (2009)
Swamp Thing by Scott Snyder (specifically Vol. 2, Family Tree, and Vol. 3, Rotworld: The Green Kingdom)
Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death (2016)
Poison Ivy (2021) by G. Willow Wilson (curently ongoing)
Ivy also pops up in Ram V's Catwoman (2018) run and pretty consistently in Harley's solo books after 2015.
For Two-Face (my beloved), read Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman: Dark Victory (which function as a double feature). Then read any of the following:
Batman: Faces (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #28-30)
Batman: Two-Face (1995)
Batman Annual #14: "Eye of the Beholder"
Gotham Central, which has an extended Harvey-Renee Montoya subplot
Batman/Two-Face: "Crime and Punishment"
Batman/Two-Face: Face the Face (2006)
Two-Face: Year One (2008)
Batman and Robin (2011) 23.1: Two-Face
Detective Comics #1020-1022: “The Ugly Heart”
Two-Face: One Bad Day
And for a couple of stories that aren't Harvey-focused but feature him as a prominent antagonist...read Robin: Year One, A Lonely Place of Dying, and Batman: Prodigal.
For the al Ghuls, apart from the Batman Arkham collections you're primarily looking for Tales of the Demon, the Demon Trilogy (Birth of the Demon, Bride of the Demon, Son of the Demon), Batman: The Chalice, and Batman Annual #26 (the prologue to Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul, which is also fun). Two of Damian's Robin solos (Robin: Son of Batman (2015) and Robin (2021)) also prominently feature Talia. There are...certainly other options, if you want to read about the al Ghuls, but they're rarely well characterized in those (except Talia's LexCorp CEO arc; all hail Talia's Lexcorp CEO arc).
Clayface (the Basil Karlo version) prominently featured as a protagonist in Tynion's Detective Comics Rebirth (2016) run.
Everyone else...apart from stories where they're the prominent antagonist, there were several Villain takeover issues during the period of Batman and Robin (2011) when Damian was dead, Year of the Villain had a few issues focused on the Batman Rogues, and the One Bad Day series focuses each issue on a different Bat Rogue.
There are plenty of other stories centered on various members of Batman's Rogues Gallery, but hopefully this gives you a solid starting place!
