The first four are in reference to a great idea I had of - since I’ve finished my lower-limit page number testing for making books; shorter fics take up less page space, and just increasing the font size isn’t as handsome! - simply making a mini book! All it would take would be to halve the pages again, right? Just cut them right down the middle! Easy peasy!

As I’m sure you can tell by the second, no. Not easy peasy. Difficult painful un-fun >:(

Obviously I still did it tho! What do you take me for, someone who could have the idea of an even tinier book and then not do something about it?? No It’s also the only one so far to have a paper bookmark rather than a ribbon!

All told it’s a bit smaller than your average manga (I love the monochrome covers on these under their dust jackets haha <3) - you can see even with effectively doubling up the pages by halving their size, it was still very small-spined!

A quick shot while it was still being made hehe ♪ It’s Out! Paired here - and the earlier one, just without its dust jacket haha - with my Zarla SC2 collection (ft. Family, Negotiations are Going...Well, and With No Obligation) - I absolutely kicked myself after the fact for not including Out as the run-up to everything, I was really trying to make a full collection in probably-chronological order! Out would’ve been a perfect start! And it only would’ve taken like four pages!!

Ah well, it was still quite a learning experience - I probably wouldn’t make another standalone of under 4k-ish just for formatting reasons but I did get some good ideas of how to do so if I wanted to! Although, my next project is going to be even more of a formatting nightmare........I’ll get there when I get there! Lol

Confession I guess?

I figured it's time I was honest with y'all. (below the cut; feel free to skip if it's not your preferred cuppa)

I know I don't owe anyone an explanation of any kind, but as I've always said and stood by, I hold what audience I have with the highest regard and respect and I feel y'all deserve more from me than just the occasional "thanks for reading!" you know?

That being said, I want to let everyone know that, it's official: I am writing an original novel that I do plan to have published as soon as possible. I am planning on this novel being a trilogy of sorts, so there will be multiple books coming from me! :D

I have been writing fanfiction since I was 12 years old. What started on a floppy disk has flourished into a passion that I will always be proud of and grateful for. Writing fanfiction has spared my life more than once, and in the process of writing fanfiction, I have made friends that I know I will have for the rest of my life. I am so SO so grateful to y'all.

However, as time has gone on, and especially in the last few years or so, writing fanfiction felt more like an obligation rather than the hobby it's supposed to be. And that's no fun. But trying to bridge the gap between fanfiction and actual fiction (aka, the kind you can get paid for) has also been a struggle. I had a hard time trying to detach the ideas I had for fics from their respective fandoms and convert them into something that could be an original novel.

I have tried to adapt some of my more popular fanfiction stories into original ones, but a lot of the fandoms I've been in just don't make that an easy prospect (even my Modern AUs are hard to adapt since what makes them Modern AUs is deeply embedded in their respective fandom). But lately, the fog from that cloud seems to have lifted, and I am currently working on the manuscript for my very first novel!

All that aside, you might be wondering: "but Liz! You promised us you'd finished your fic! You promised, you promised, you promised!!" And you're right. I did promise. A promise I still intend to fulfill. I am a woman of my word. Sutures will be finished.

Someday.

But the timeline for that finale is now offcially on an indefinite hiatus. I could wake up tomorrow morning and finish it all and then post it that evening. Or it could be 10 years before I'm able to get back to it. Who can say? I sure as hell cannot. And while I hope I won't have to make y'all wait that long, like Claire, I have a glass face and cannot lie. But I also have to live in reality: I am my family's primary breadwinner. We are all disabled in some form and I am no longer capable of working outside our home. Wolf hasn't been for some time, so us staying home with The Pup just makes more sense now that we have officially pulled him from public school to homeschool him ourselves. Doing something working from home is now my chief focus, and I have to do what I need to do to facilitate that. We are good for the time being though (so much so that I closed the gfm I started a few months ago, so thank you to everyone who helped us out in our time of need 💜)

It has been a lifelong dream of mine to become a published author. A writer of love stories, in every romance genre I can get my wee fingers on! xD I am now in a position to chase that exact dream, and I cannot wait to be able to share what I've been doing!

To the Outlander fandom: my heart is yours from the moment I saw y'all. You've held my spirit with your two hands, and kept it safe (hey, jammf would be proud of me for channeling him here, be quiet :P) I have had many ups and downs with fandoms but I am eternally grateful for the love and appreciation this fandom has showered me with and I hope y'all will continue to stick around to see what else I got up my sleeve!

…Eh, I’ll try to answer your question so it’s as spoiler free as possible. ;)

So, this story is basically three fics long, and each one has a very specific vibe to it.

ONE: Subaru is in hell and doesn’t know how to get out. Very angsty and it just seems to get worse and worse to the point of absolute absurdity. Also everyone feels like they’re straight out of Re:Forgotten or something lmao, WHAT is HAPPENING—

TWO: Context is suddenly given for why everyone is acting the way that they are. Pure crack. Benny Hill Theme on full blast. Everyone is rushing to keep Subaru out of harm’s way with all the grace of a bunch of college students trying to wrestle an oiled pig. Things keep going wrong and Subaru’s desperate attempts to be a problem(???) are really not helping.

THREE: Subaru has given up and everyone very suddenly realizes that They Fucked Up. Everyone is desperately hoping that he’ll go back to being a spoiled brat, please. He can be an actual delinquent this time if he wants, even, they’ll put up with it. Welcome it with open arms, even. Subaru gradually learns that this was an enormous fuck-up and no, these people don’t actually hate him, they’re just kinda dumb. The “it gets better” part is finally here. (At one point he starts being an absolute shit and Julius is so happy to see him getting a personality again that he instantly sucks all the fun out of it and then starts pleading with him to PLEASE go back to being a brat, he’s sorry, he’ll act annoyed this time, he PROMISES—) (This one’s so fluffy it might actually give me a toothache ngl)

there's a whole lot of context for it, so i'll put it under the cut

so this is an au of asterix and the cauldron. if you haven't read it, basically what happens is asterix is banished from the village because he fails to protect a cauldron of money entrusted to the village by another chief called whosemoralsarelastix. he and obelix have a bunch of misadventures trying to earn back the money, but eventually they give up and head to whosemoralsarelastix's village to return the cauldron. on the way there, though, they meet a passing tax collector, try to rob him and discover that the money he carries smells like onion soup - just like the money that was in the cauldron! so asterix realises that whosemoralsarelastix got his men to steal the cauldron in order to pay his taxes and stay in the romans' good books. he confronts him and they have a swordfight, which asterix loses, but then the cliff whosemoralsarelastix is standing on crumbles and his money falls into the sea, so he gives up and asterix and obelix go back to the village.

so my au stemmed from a little ficlet i wrote about asterix's thoughts while he was leaving the village, which then got me thinking about why he might be on his own. and i realised it would be very easy for the romans to have taken advantage of this situation if they had known about it.

so in my au a roman spy overhears asterix being banished and the romans decide to try and capture him while he's vulnerable. they stop obelix from following him by intercepting him at an inn, where they drug his food and transport him somewhere where he can't get away before he loses his strength because he's gone so long without eating. meanwhile, asterix has some pretty similar misadventures to the comic.

he finds out about what whosemoralsarelastix did, but doesn't just barge in and confront him where he's protected by his men. so he does some stealth missions and sows doubt in whosemoralsarelastix's mind by making it look like his men are trying to get on the romans' bad side, and then arranges a meeting in a forest clearing away from the village, which whosemoralsarelastix doesn't tell anyone about because he doesn't trust his men.

in the climax of the story, which is depicted in the drawing, asterix confronts him, and they fight, but this time whosemoralsarelastix isn't standing on a cliff, so he nearly succeeds in killing asterix.

by this point obelix has escaped and been looking everywhere for asterix, so he soon finds him and brings him back to the village, where getafix treats his injuries and they explain about the whole fiasco. it's a lesson to everyone not to take asterix for granted.

sorry for that long spiel, i did a LOT of thinking about this idea. it might even end up as a fic someday ;)

as for the actual art, it was a lot of fun trying to do the sunset lighting! what i did was i actually started with just the sky and drew everything else as silhouettes, which i then sketched and did lineart and coloured on, and then used the original silhouettes as the shading. i think it turned out pretty good! also i'm really proud of the motion smear on the sword :D

i think i messed up asterix's pose a little bit bc it's not at all clear where the sword is meant to have cut him, but at least it looks cool :D

like it was GOOD! and it could've BEEN good! Very much not trying to hate on later seasons s/v bcos like. I do get it. I get why you all like this. It really does got a lot going for it. Understandable have a nice day right. But. Idk man Sydney's literally balancing 3 lives and (if you don't count Jack) Vaughn's really the only one who she can talk to about ALL of them! He's the only one who actually knows everything!

And like okay whatever tangent time yay because I'm not Vaughn's biggest fan later on sorry but like in season one?? That is my JAM peak Vaughn behaviour ten out of ten. The CIA's got all their stupid 'ah don't like catch feelings or. whatever I dunno aaah' and like OBVIOUSLY there's a reason for that. We see the reason in the show and Vaughn TRIES but he ends up caring for Sydney ANYWAY. Idc if you want to think it's romantic or not at that point, the point is that he's Not Supposed to Do That but this idiot does it anyway.

AND LIKE. Okay. Sydney is in kind of a fucking impossible situation right now. If it were me I'd just give up like sorry Sloane. Sorry everybody. This is exhausting I'm tired. And the thing of it is she TRIES to. She WANTS to. But she can't and she knows she can't because of x and y and z but fun fact knowing that means nothing because it still sucks and she still wants to be done with it, but that's why Vaughn's there!! His literal job is to say no you can't quit! Because she can't, and things would be bad if she did, but also imagine for a second that you've been seeing someone frequently for a while now, and maybe you didn't know them very well in the beginning but you've gotten to know more about them. You are their only real confidant, and they are in an absolutely terrible position. Their mental health is just not doing so great. And then they say hey, I'd like to leave, and you know that that is a bad choice and just not a real option right now, but you also know that this person is doing poorly and, at least in the immediate, this would fix their problems. And this is why you weren't supposed to care in the first place, because these hard decisions are going to have to be made and you are the one who is supposed to be making them!

Anyway. I dunno. I just feel like it might be something fun to see more of. Like I don't know but honestly just imagine being The Person that someone can actually talk to. And I know like oh that's literally his job obviously, but also Vaughn objectively kind of sucks at his job because you know the entire paragraph above. You're not supposed to do that buddy. And also okay I know we were kind of putting a pin in the whole romance thing but let's take the pin out now and say whoa that makes it worse! That makes it even worse! Not only do you sympathise with this person but you love them too? PARDON.

I don't really wanna go into detail, but I will say that I've encountered more upsetting situations in the Octonauts fandom, than I have in nearly every other fandom combined. Which is rather surprising considering its a kids show. And also unfortunate, since I don't really feel free to have fun in the Octonauts fandom the way I want to..

I'm hoping that at some point I can get my confidence back and find my way around that fandom and have the fun I want. But for now I'm just kind'a keeping my distance and thinking about it. I don't need any extra stress rn-

I use FireAlpaca! :D As for how to draw injuries and bruises.. hmm.. well.. injuries are different from drawing to drawing and hard to explain.. but bruises? aaa how do I explain it--

Well, for character with pale skin. Like Wario and Waluigi.. I find I just airbrush some deep purples and reds in one spot on their face and put some dark purple/red scratches on top.. and how much purple or red you use depends on the freshness/severity of the bruise. If that makes sense..??

Like- Using this post with the Wario "bros" as an example, the bruise on Waluigi's chin/cheek is a muddy purple and has dark purple scratches on it. I feel like using purple makes the bruise look little older and likes its healed some.

Meanwhile on Wario's chin the bruise is pink/red-ish. Making it look "bloody" and fresh. I think so at least--

AGHHG- sorry, I'm not the best at explaining things. I hope you can look to that post as a reference and draw some bruises. I used the airbrush and pencil tool to draw them if that helps! <:D

While some of this is true, this sounds like a rather 1 sided view of Alphys' character. I know most of the Undertale characters are beautifully complex and thought out, Alphys included. And I don't think this view is accurate to who she really is.

For example, as far as I remember she wasn't watching anime to "slack off". I'm sure she was severely depressed and extremely overwhelmed with everything going on in her life atm.

I think it would be a good idea for you to watch some character analysis videos on Alphys. Since I don't remember her very clearly, I cannot defend her very well. But I recall seeing a lot of posts/videos in defense of Alphys and explaining why she did the things she did.

Basically, I think its worth your while to actually look into Alphys and give her a chance! Who knows, after gaining some more understanding of her, you might just like her! :}

And hey, I get where you're coming from about the whole art theft thing. :( That is my biggest struggle being here on Tumblr. The constant art theft is so disheartening. In fact there were several times in the past where I almost threw in the towel and quit Tumblr all together over it.

But what's kept me around is people like you! :D There's some folks out there that really care about what I make. And are excited to see what I make next! The nice comments they leave me and the engagement with my work has really stuck with me. And it's what keeps me coming back! Maybe someday if you decide to take that first step and post some artwork, you'll find a lotta nice folks that make the art theft seem not so bad :}

Also giant watermarks. Giaaant watermarks that are just annoying to look at. That might discourage art theft <XDD

As for Jevil and Grillby.. In my AU, Jevil has this power to create mirrors and jump from timeline to timeline through them.

At some point when it was just him and Seam traveling together, they wound up in this Snowdin at night. Grillby was about to close his bar but he saw these too tired and hungry people so he let them in.

At some point while they were sitting at the counter and talking to Grillby.. Jevil could feel in his soul that this timeline they were in was about to collapse. Killing everyone in it. Jevil reacted on instinct and grabbed Seam and Grillby's arm and pulled the three of them through a mirror. The timeline was destroyed as soon as they disaapered.

What this meant is Jevil had saved Grillby's life!.. But his AU/timeline no longer existed. All of Grillby's friends and family were gone.. his home was gone.. He was now a homeless wandering traveler just like Seam and Jevil.

Deep down, Grillby doesn't really hate Jevil. He just took the grief of it all really hard and blamed it all on Jevil in response. He wished that Jevil hadn't saved him so he could have just died with the rest of his family.. and not have to experience this grief today..

Overtime he gets better.. and he understands that Jevil didn't want for any of this to happen. Eventually they talk about it a little and they end up on better terms. Maybe even becoming true friends someday. :}

Thank you so much! I'm glad you like what I've made! :DD As for Wario and Waluigi.. the main changes I'm working on are visual/design changes. In their outfits especially. And I'm thinking of taking away their hats. They looked obviously very similar to Mario and Luigi's..

When it comes to their story, that is also being developed. I think I wanna keep the aspect of the Mario bros getting in some trouble and the Wario "bros" rescue them. Though with recent developments.. I don't know if the whole thing in Shy Guy woods is gonna work out-

In other news, actually no! :0 I wasn't aware that Spidercrab is so liked, but I am very glad to hear that he is! :DD

And a lot of those vibes was what I was going for! Tired, traumatized, has anxiety but is better at hiding it. Though the father figure is unexpected XD but I guess it fits! He's rather introverted and prefers quiet and space. But he is also the crews medic, and boy does he worry and care too much for his own good. He cares too much about them to spend all his time alone. He not only cares about their physical health, but he cares about them as people.

He wants to be there for his crew. He want's to be the first to notice when something is wrong or one of his crew is unwell. So he tries to participate in all their gatherings. Despite how much he'd rather just go read a book in his hammock <XDD

Though, he is still antisocial/awkward.. so there could have been many times he noticed one of the crew seemed off. But he didn't have the guts to talk to them. So he would go and tip off one of the other crew members to check up on them. Stuff like that I imagine is his way of showing he cares. :}

And oh yeah, his children's safety is his #1 priority. He's probably getting Kamek to create more Goomba's and rearranging his troops. Setting up a big chunk of them to just be on watch duty around his land. In case the hero's decide to come back..

He's also probably tightening the defenses around his hidden palace. (Where the Koopalings, Kamek, Kammy and the Blue paratroops all live.) Most likely by stationing more troops there and hiding out there himself. He wasn't able to beat the bros but he will still be an obstacle for them if they ever make it to the palace and try to hurt his kids. (Mario and Luigi wouldn't do that most likely but Bowser doesn't really know anything about them at this point- other than the fact they are very powerful and very scary)

I didn't think much about K rool when I made my version of DK. But that guy and his species are intended to exist and be causing problems on DK's island. Though all the details I'm unsure of.. perhaps its what you said, maybe they want the special beets and fruits that the kongs eat? Or maybe they came from another island that didn't have much to eat and now they're here to take over.?? :00

I imagined he likes to mess with the crew sometimes and pull little pranks. Its all in good fun! Just a bit of goofin off. And he mostly does it to Coco XDD

Now his favorite crew member.. hmm.. I feel like that might be Ellie. Despite her cold exterior, she had a big heart and really does love her crew. Even the butthead that is Tuna <XDD I can see her getting the other crew members to lay off and give Tuna some space. She is known for cooking food to everyone's specific preference, no matter how much longer it takes to make. And she would do the same for Tuna. Cooking what ever he wants, how ever he wants it cooked.

That really means a lot to Tuna.. if he can count on anything, he can count on Ellie to cook a perfect meal just for him.

Now the crew member that understands him the most would be who ever has had similar experiences to him, right..? In that case it might be Pinwheel. Orrr Coco.. maybe Spidercrab..? Ah, I'm gonna need to do some more thinking on that one <XD

The crew member he doesn't feel so comfortable around could be Cuttlefish. She is very mysterious and some would even say untrustworthy. He is probably spooked by her and doesn't fully trust her. Though I'm also experimenting with Tuna having trouble with authority figures. So mayyybe he's less comfortable around Seafoam and Octo..?? :00

No its not a sexual dimorphism thing, its all about stress, exhaustion, health,, etc.

Peach and Daisy have very thin blue markings (like their species is SUPPOSED to have) because they are well fed, well rested, and pampered as princesses.

Wario and Waluigi's blue markings are very large and puffy becuase they eat garbage, get very little to no sleep, and are fighting for their lives on the daily pretty much- if they had a saver living environment and a secure source of food, their eye bag would be much less noticeable-

Now Rosalina's blue marks are noticeable and puffy mostly due to her grief and depression. And partly because she isn't exactly.. aliiive..? Anymore..?? <:D

And yes! Everyone's ears are emotive! :}} Maybe subtly though. They can perk their ears up or droop them down, much more than a human typically can. But they cant do really fine and quick movements to improve their hearing/listen in a certain direction. Like Dogs, cats and rabbits can for example. Its all slow and mostly intentional movements.

Nope, I don't have plans to finish that comic. The writing was horrible and everyone acted super out of character all in the name of angst. 👎👎👎

If anyone wanted to know the ending, Kwazii was gonna patch Barnacle's face and the rest of the crew was gonna show up in the gups. They get him in a gup, take him to the octopod and he gets situated in the sick bay.

Then Kwazii and Peso have this stupid emotional talk about how Peso feels bad for not being there for the captain and blah blah blah. VERY out of character for Peso. The entire point of Peso's character is that he "helps any creature who is hurt or sick, no matter what." There is literally nothing on earth that could have stopped him from helping his own Captain, no, his friend in his time of need. That writing is juuuust so dumb.

Plus Kwazii was a total idiot in that comic- realistically Kwazii would have taken that situation very seriously and would have listened to anything that Peso told him to do. And even if for some reason he was being stupid and continued to approach the Captain, Peso would have stopped him.

And this is even beyond the fact that this whole comic starts with Captain Barnacles doing a series of very stupid and irresponsible things that he would not do. And then a perfect storm of "whoopsies!" happen ever so perfectly to have him wind on that island.

Over all its a veeeeery bad comic. Not my best! 0/10 would NOT draw it again! XD I don't even want to re-write it to make it good. Becuase that whole situation just wouldn't happen from the start.

Although, I am keeping the idea that Barnacles has a very sensitive nose/face. (Due to him being a polar bear with many muscles and nerves in his face) And if he ever got hit in the nose/face? It would be incredibly painful and he would be very disoriented for a time. But the rest of that comic can go down the drain XD

I'm not good with words, which we both know already, so I'll try my worst and keep it short. I can't believe time flies so fast, has it been years already? Time's really weird when you become aware of it, it just slips through like sand, and I don't think I like that. Especially with a human I've come to, well, care for.

For the longest time, I thought my obsessions, my nonexistent social skills, my struggles, they would deter you from approaching. But... you never did. I used to hate myself for, well, everything (I still do, but that's another thing), but you still stayed by my side regardless. You saw my growth, you went through so much with me and for me, you chose me, solely for who I am, and I can't thank you enough for it.

So I think that would influence when he says it out loud

But I think Pablo would take a while to realize that he’s in love

I think it would take a good 6-8 months before he would be able to look at you and think “wow. So this is what being in love feels like.”

TRAFALGAR D WATER LAW 

♤ When Law first brought you in, it was only because everyone had spread rumors about how you were a devil. He first met you in your hometown where you were just sitting under the tree and drawing your sketchbook for fun. Of course, Law was intimidating because he was a pirate and you thought that he was gonna rob you. However, after interacting with him for a bit, you grew to like his presence. You loved hearing tales of his adventures and Law seemed to like your company which led him to recruit you.

♤ Even though you helped around the ship occasionally to prove your worth to Law, you wanted to do more than that. Law wasn't really bothered by it, telling you that you didn't really have to do anything but you protested and tried to take on more responsibilities. In the end, he suggested using your drawing skills to illustrate the adventures that the crew had been on. You didn't have that much confidence and rarely showed the crew what you'd drawn. Even Law has never seen your work but he doesn't mind at all.

♤ Law first learns that you had a devil fruit when you fell overboard during a storm and couldn't swim. Eventually, you explained to the crew about your devil fruit and how you're not very fond of using it. You managed to demonstrate it when Penguin and Shachi wanted to see your quirk in action. Even though it was weird to see their own hands turn into a book, they seemed quite amazed at how detailed the contents of the books were.

♤ Now, Law isn't the most open person and he prefers not to tell everyone about what happened in the past. He's not a talkative person either. He's slightly uncomfortable after knowing that you're capable of reading someone's entire past. Of course, he trusts you, believing that you'd never use your devil fruit on him without consent. However, he thinks that its a great ability for information gathering but will never force you to use your devil fruit if you're against it.

♤ Over time, your relationship with Law steadily bloomed into something romantic. You had confided to Ikkaku who only teased you for being adorable and urged you to confess your undying love to your captain—instead of helping you with your predicament. After a long talk with Ikkaku, you eventually decided to take her advice and tell Law how you felt. You didn't expect him to return your feelings but everything worked out just fine and you were officially Law's girlfriend. 

♤ It was a little later that Law discovered your secret manga. You have been drawing it since you started developing feelings for Law and it was something you kept on drawing even after you started dating. He only saw it when you had fallen asleep on your desk. When he walked over to wake you up, he noticed the drawings and how they resembled you and him. You let out a mortified shriek and demanded he looks away. He could only chuckle at your cute reaction, kissing your forehead.

EUSTASS KID

☆ This guy intimidates you. Of course, he does. When he first meets you, he thinks that you're a weirdo, always buried in your little sketchbook. He was initially interested in your drawing skills, seeing how they might prove to be useful someday. Kid sort of just drags you into becoming one of his crew members without your consent. No one expected Kid to be interested in someone like you--no offense. But it was because you were the complete opposite of him.

☆ You definitely do not fit in with the crew. The Kid Pirates were known for dealing with major destruction and civilian casualties. And let's be honest, you've never been in a fight and don't even know how to defend yourself. Even though you looked very out of place, you're always offering the crew a helping hand on menial tasks as if trying to prove yourself to be useful. But Kid always tells you not to worry your pretty little head and just do whatever you want.

☆ The one to fall in love first was you and it takes a while for you to actually win him over. Even though you're the one who fell first, he falls harder. It's a painful experience for his crew, watching the two of you try to impress one another. Kid's confession isn't your usual 'I love you' but more of a 'You're mine, aren't you?!' Honestly, it was just kind of embarrassing because he corners you and confesses to you. He didn't let you go until you tell him how you feel.

☆ Kid is protective and possessive, never the type to shy away from PDA. In fact, he loves flaunting that you belong to him. An arm around your shoulder, having you sit on his lap, kissing you in front of a crowd of people. When the crew is fighting, he's always glancing at you to make sure that you're unharmed. He's much tamer with you, ensuring his tone is a bit softer so you don't think that he's mad at you or anything. Everyone knows that the captain has a soft spot for you.

Finds out you have a devil fruit when you were knocked overboard during a scuffle with the marines. Thanks to Kid being observant and quick decision, you were pulled out of the water in no time. He kind of yells at you for not telling him that you had a devil fruit, throwing a tantrum like a child he is. And all you could do was mumble how you don't really like using it before showing the whole crew what you could do. 

☆ Teases the shit out of you the moment he sees what you've been secretly working on the entire time. He will hold the book above your head while you attempt to reach for it. But how could you when he was just so much taller than you are? Once he skims through it, he finds himself smiling at the drawings, you drew almost everything. The dates you went on together and the secret getaways, he finds it all drawn there.

Hi! I'd love your advice/thoughts if you have the time: a friend is interested in trying ttrpgs. Theyre, uh, scifi/fantasy-curious? (such a normie & I love them for it) They love strategy games and stories but are a little nervous about the freeform/rp elements. I'd really like to NOT use 5e as the intro game but having a lot of trouble thinking of another good option for someone who has zero sff/ttrpg background.. (I love reading about your new campaign 🥰) thank you!

hi! there's a bunch of possibilities and almost certainly your friend will need to try out multiple things to find something they really vibe with, but! here are some suggestions. i tried to include a wide variety in terms of mechanics, vibes, genre etc.

Savage Worlds. this system is setting-neutral so it can be as SFF (or not!) as you like. it has some mechanical crunch but not nearly as much as, say, d&d or pathfinder so it's likely easier for beginners to pick up. easy to prepare encounters on the gm side and character creation is super customizable.

Fiasco. this is a gm-less oneshot-style game that i think does a great job of dropping players into narrative roleplay with JUST enough guidance from the rules. the game is designed to simulate a caper gone wrong. all players share narrative control, which can be intimidating for newbies, but is also great practice of doing that kind of thing.

Shadowdark, for a dungeon-delving OSR style game. i haven't gotten the chance to play this myself but I've read through the rulebook and hope to run some games someday. the rules are not as complicated as d&d, but still provide great structure and opportunity for strategy. there's also a cool real-time element of tracking light sources (each torch only lasts for one IRL hour) which is fun. i feel like it's a good introduction to old-school style ttrpgs with a modern twist.

systems like Powered by the Apocalypse (i.e. Monster of the Week) and Forged in the Dark (i.e. Blades in the Dark, Scum and Villainy) are narrative-driven and fiction-focused games that are often recommended for beginner players. IMO, these kinds of games really push players (and GMs!) to approach games entirely from the fiction side of things, which can be challenging, especially if your friend isn't comfortable with that kind of thing yet. i did want to suggest them though because they might be the flavor of game your friend would enjoy, and there's a ton of varied genres within these systems.

and finally, if you're looking for a mechanically crunchy game similar to d&d that's better than d&d, Pathfinder 2e is your friend. it's high fantasy and rules heavy, so it may not be the vibe, but if your friend is looking for strategy, combat, and tons of character options, pf2e is great. (and, importantly, all the rules are free online!)

(and to be clear, i mean, like, peeps from the varmont empire -- esp the og nation -- not just the fam...)

so we know a good bit about the astairan religion, and so i wanted to hammer out some details abt its counterpart, roderick's god! so far, we know a few things

they have one god

the phoenix symbol is linked to their religion

they do NOT like witches!!!!

they consider the guardians to be demons

so!! obv there are multiple real-world monotheistic faiths, [ zoroastrianism, atenism, judaism, islam, christianity, and numerous others ], from which we can take inspiration

we also know that ppl from the og varmont country have a wide variety of naming bg's

roderick (anglicized visigothic) famed ruler

alaric (anglicized visigothic) ruler of all

guinevere (anglicized welsh) white phantom

edmund (old english) rich protection/protector

arthur (anglicized welsh or anglicized latin) bear king or honorable/respectful

sebastian (latinized germanic) venerable/exulted

cassandra (greek) excelling/shining one

bartholomew (greek-ized aramaic) son of the furrowed

marian (anglicized egyptian) sea of bitterness/rebelliousness/wished for child/beloved/star of the sea

alistair (scottish) defender of man/protector

there's also eoin (irish-ized hebrew) god is gracious and ciara (old irish) black lady who have irish names, but i consider these outliers and attribute this to their calleary mama <3

now, why am i jabbering abt names in a post that purports to be abt religion? well, i thought it might help sprinkle in some fun elements to the religion itself if we can kinda pinpoint sort of a cultural element for og!varmont the way we did for astaira

so, why ~these names for these ppl? now, obv there are doylist reasons for this haha but i was thinking it could be fun to run w it and add a layer of in-world reasons esp w the rise of nationalism in og!varmont that came w roderick

so!! the things that came up the most?

english x1 (but almost allll of the names are anglicized -- for obv reasons, we're english speakers hahah -- but still!)

germanic x1

scottish x1

now!! its also interesting to note that germanic and visigothic language have the same root, and that welsh, irish, and scottish all have the same root, so by ~that estimation, names of those origins both show up x3 respectively. another interesting fact, english is comprised of ~both of those roots w a dash of french thrown in for spice ;D (thanks, Wm the Conqueror!)

HOWEVER!! it should also be stated that the names of the royal family (those ~born varmont, anyway) should bear the most weight bc those are most likely to be traditional names to the og culture, so the egyptian and scottish names are probs the least relevant to this process but def still worth considering imo! HOWEVER!! its also worth noting that both roderick and alaric were born to a second wife, so its ~also highly possible that their names are derived from the tradition of whatever ~her culture was so yeah!! bc of these sorts of considerations, bartholomew, guin, arthur, and edmund are likely to have the most 'traditional' names as they were all named w the notion that depending on how things shake out they might rule someday, whereas even tho roderick, for example, was born a second son his dad def wasn't viewing him as a potential future king, and therefore its unlikely he viewed alaric that way, either, whereas we all know its equally possible w our ot3: succession kids laksdjfakljsd

ANYWAY, i feel like, altogether, including each one, this tapestry of names is actually telling us a bit of a backstory -- i.e., that the og!varmont nation (OVN for short from now on!) was an international hub, and im thinking that might tie into maybe roderick's father and grandfather and great-grandfather doing lots of trading w other nearby nations, until whatever OVN's ~pure culture felt kinda lost to "revivalists" such as roderick who felt they had to unearth it from the mire of homogenization, leading to the rise of nationalism and acts such as digging into the ancient past to try to discover whatever may have once been unique abt OVN, and as such roderick making huge national statements like IMMA TAKE MORE WIVES NOW and not receiving backlash bc that's what the ancient kings of OVN did, a fact stated in his bio!

this nationalistic and xenophobic rising tide paired w conquest of course then ironically hurls off the shackles of alien cultures (thus alienating the new culture OVN had since been building) only to then do the same to other cultures by obliterating them in the tide that is this frankenstein'd version of whatever the lost ancient culture might've been bc i love it when roderick is always and inevitably hypocritical without realizing it <3

ANYWAY!! all this international trade and such means you'd have an influx of foreign alliances and marriages and, ofc, names, so yeah!!

so, question 1: would it be helpful to sort of figure out culture(s) to model OVN on? and, if so, do any of these appeal?

now let's circle back to religion!

so when you get roderick's reactive party rising to power, you start seeing a couple of things. now, ngl, i kinda feel like maybe roderick actually follows his mama's religion, which may or may not be/have been the same as OVN's, if we wanna explore any potential religious backlash from within OVN, or anything like that? but irregardless of how it came about, roderick has in fact established his religion as the official state religion of his new empire, and failed to believe accordingly meets with a fiery (aka in his eyes, cleansing!) death

sooooo im having some frankly insane ideas abt Roderick’s belief system thanks to the Phoenix iconography (like…boiled down roderick might legit worship death effectively -- the only god that comes when you call, the god of all, the god of equality?!!?!! Though in a slightly more life/death ying/yang creation through destruction kinda way, motto ‘in my end is my beginning’ sorta way idk Sfjkhffg HELPPP!) and before I get too carried away bc idk if we need a death cult emperor 😂😭 ummmm I wondered if you guys had any thoughts abt the varmont faith/the one god/etc adhkkjgdgh

some other thoughts i had — Phoenix flames, sun, light, fire — dichotomy of light/dark, good/evil — so roderick's view, then, Astaira and the staffords literally take the night as their standard (three stars in the night sky) and worship demons, conquest cleanses etc...idk!! what do you guys think? the sun and moon are the eyes of god

i also had some notions pulled from mostly atenism, orphism, and zoroastrianism re: its cosmology, that maybe there once were three gods: the light god, his goddess wife, and the dark god, but the dark god attempted to kill the great god, stabbing him through the eye (the moon eye) but the pregnantn goddess sacrificed herself and her divinity to bring back her husband who cast down the dark god, stripping him of his divinity, and now he's basically ~satan, but he couldn't bear to never see his wife again so he used the divinity he'd seized from his dark brother to #reincarnation and his reborn wife, tho no longer a goddess (since, to bring back both wife and unborn child he had to split the divinity so yeah #onegod), bore their mortal child whom roderick considers to be his ancestor, so basically the varmonts are possibly descended from the god and goddess, reincarnation is maybe a thing, there's one god of light and one demon of the dark, and death might be good maybe? laksjfkljsfk

(i was thinking a belief in reincarnation maybe bc of the phoenix symbology -- representing resurrection, rebirth, life in death, etc, and the dark god bc they obv believe in demons of some kind, and not!god evil gods w demonic servants appear in many monotheistic belief systems, judaism, islam, christianity, and zoroastrianism to name a few)

Today, when we, cos party, discussed out of character with our dm what will we do in the final battle (that can even not happen at all), I said "it will be very sad! I might not be able to take down you both, but at least two of the three is gonna die (one being me, diyng in the process of trying to protect Strahd). So, just asking... how will you react if someone from you party will do something like that?

We are pretty chill about it all btw, because we're trying to make Strahd an ally in interdimension war and some of us (me and possibly other pc) are gonna join him anyway, but what would your reaction be?

late response but this is a GREAT question!

firstly I love that you guys are talking about the final battle out-of-character first; I will definitely be doing the same with my group when the time comes so that I can try to give everybody what they want out of a final encounter.

since the mission statement my players all agreed on for this campaign was literally "let's punch dracula in the dick", I'm going out of my way to try and make Strahd extremely easy to hate by emphasizing sexism, classism, and abuse of power as themes in the campaign, and generally leaning hard into the idea that Strahd's got some real incel energy*. so my hope is that no one will want to try and protect or defend Strahd for any reason, because otherwise I've kinda fucked up. we've also all agreed above-the-table that this isn't a game where we're going to do betrayals or secret plots because it's Baby's First D&D for most of them and our goals are more humor and teamwork than le drama.

buuut who knows, there's always a chance the campaign will go in a very unexpected direction, or maybe I'll accidentally make Strahd seem really, really cool, or maybe one of my players will discover they've got a huge boner for vampires and a drama kink and decide swapping sides and dying dramatically would be really fun for them.

and if that happens, my reaction will probably be, "okay, cool, let's talk about it together as a group to see how everyone's feeling about this" so we can work together to figure out how to give that player some of what they're looking for without accidentally upsetting or ruining the fun for my other two players. I don't think that kind of thing would be a great fit for this game, but I'm sure we could find a compromise if their heart is really in it, you know?

*Someday I will run a full-nasty CoS campaign where Strahd is cruel and complex and tragic and much harder to pin as "good" or "bad", and in that game I will actively welcome Strahd simps to come do their thing and make the campaign even messier. but that's for another game and different players, lmao.

I had a Loki/Sigyn fic I was writing years ago with my own concept for Sigyn’s characterization. It was fun but I don’t have much prolonged interest in the MCU anymore so I don’t know if I’ll get back in the mindset to continue it. Who knows, though? Maybe someday 😅

All aspects of a scene need to be balanced in order to craft a good story, in my personal opinion. I work very hard to write realistic dialogue and in-character actions. I really think I have a knack for characterization.

Finishing lengthier WIPs, despite all the best intentions 😅

-- What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Nuanced. It can be done correctly or incorrectly imo. I think it can be a wonderful way to express a more about a character, like using terms of endearment in the character’s native tongue, for example.

-- What was the first fandom you wrote for?

To my recollection either Kim Possible or The Incredibles when I was little. I didn’t really refer to it as “fanfic” back in the day, though

-- What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?

For My Hero, I really want to write a dynamic between Toshinori and Moko Tamashi (the last woman All Might saved) not necessarily romantic; I haven’t decided on a direction for that one, only that I want them to interact.

For One Piece, I also want to write something for Sanji and Osome (the woman from Wano with the little mouse friend) — they were so cute and I liked her a lot!

Both of these are self-indulgent bc it’s one of my favorite characters and an underrated background character lol
