I think about the fact Anya locking herself in the infirmary with Curly to kill herself and how it is in way reclaiming a space that was initially hers from Jimmy.

Not to mention how she must've been aware of Jimmy's obsession with Curly and the idea that he would lose his power over the both of them (based on the fact she likely thought they would never get the door open) and having to face the responsibility of two deaths being on his hands as acting captain.

It was her final act of agency stuck on that ship with her abuser and it says something that she chose to die next to Curly, despite his inaction, leaned against him as if they were just in a casual conversation before her death. Despite everything, Anya made the final decision on her own terms and it speaks volumes considering her treatment and demeanor up until that point.

Swansea killing daisuke was the ultimate act of mercy, and the hardest thing to do. Swansea is the unappreciated hero of the story. despite his failings, he did the right thing in the end. His moments of kindness were genuine, and not at all self serving like they were for jimmy and anya.

I think he and daisuke were a foil for jimmy and curly.

As Curly's friend, Jimmy should have put Curly out of his misery. Putting him in the pod was a way out of taking responsibility for his actions. if jimmy was found, he would be suffering from the consequences and guilt. But he got to feel good in his last moments by "saving" curly, who will likely die anyways if found or subjected to debt after many surgeries that would never give him any quality of life. Jimmy was constantly betraying his friend. They had kind of a cain and abel thing.

Swansea didn't care how the guilt would affect him. Daisuke would have been in agonizing pain and likely would die anyway. The ultimate act of love was doing the hard thing and killing him. (Maybe why his name was daisuke?) Swansea was more of a man and more of a leader than Jimmy and Curly could ever be.

Spoilers if you haven't seen the episode

Starting the episode off we see Brainiac putting a device on Superman's head and later explains it as the Black Mercy.

The Black Mercy makes its first appearance in Superman Annual #11 (1985) [Cover art by Dave Gibbons, yes Watchmen's Dave Gibbons] where it was a plant that grips on to anyone giving them a vision of whatever it is they desire most in life. In the comic, Superman experiences these visions after Mongul attaches the plant to Superman who sees visions of a perfect life on Krypton with his family. Batman, Robin, and Wonder Woman who arrived at the Fortress of Solitude to celebrate Superman's birthday sees this and tries to get the Black Mercy off Superman and face off against Mongul. Lucky the trio were able to free Superman from the Black Mercy and was able to plant it on Mongul who becomes incapacitated and experiences visions of him slaughtering the Justice League. You might have seen this story get adapted in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon as well! Its a very well known Superman story with the Watchmen creative team behind it. The Black Mercy plant was not intentionally used for nefarious purposes, Mother Mercy, the creator of the plants and also a Green Lantern, intended the Black Mercy to be used for those who were dying as a way to ease their death.

The name of the episode is a reference to "The Death of Superman" story arc where Doomsday killed Superman. In the episode we kinda see the death of Clark Kent with Brainiac taking over his body through the Black Mercy

In the episode the Black Mercy works a bit different from its comic counterpart where in MAwS it uses the person's memories and Brainiac is able to alter it. We see flashbacks to various episodes from season 1 and 2. First half of the episode gives us episode 2 from season 1, which I talked about here, episode 4 from season 2, which I explained here, episode 9 from season 1 which I talked about here, and episode 10 season 1 which I explained here

Later in the episode Kara name drops Kandor, the space station that Brainiac, and Kara lived at. I explained Kandor's deal here.

As Brainiac continues his gaslighting, Clark pushes back and shows him what his real memories were like showing Brainiac a moment from episode 7 which I talked about here and here.

But Brainiac still tries to manipulate Clark by altering the things Lois said in the past.

We see flashbacks to moments when Clark felt betrayed like in episode 5 of season 2 and episode 2 season 4 which I talked about here and here. We also see altered moments from episodes 5 and 10 from season 1, which I explained here and here. We also see more altered moments from season 2 episodes 1 and 5 which I explored more of here and here. All this was to break down Clark so Brainiac can take over his body.

When Brainiac takes control of Clark's body, he explains the things the Kryptonians have done, much of these things we're stuff they have done are a references to Krypton's history in post-Crisis on Infinite Earths. In the comics, the Kryptonians were able to stop aging, diseases, and perfected cloning in case of injuries.

Brainiac makes a reference to the title of Rudyard Kipling's "The Man Who Would Be King" which I explained further here.

As Kara fights Brainiac to free his control over Clark, Brainiac bests her, knocking her down to the ground and we get a reference to the infamous Yamcha pose from episode 23 of Dragon Ball Z after he died from Saibamen exploding on him.

And with that we got 2 more episodes til the season is done! Damn I wish there was more, but considering MAwS has given us all killer no filler seasons I'm ok with the 10 episode format! See you all next week for episode 9!

Mercy of a god p5

*You skillfully direct their attention from the sacrifice to the trees by imitating a wolf howl, you sneak behind them and release the poor man... Mumbo looks impressed and the man looks awestruck. You grab him and make a run for it until you are back into the forest*

Sacrifice: Thank you! Thank you! You saved me!

Scar: Oh It's... Nothing really.

Sacrifice: Can I come with you my saviour? I have nowhere else to go!

Scar: Uh...

Sacrifice : Please I beg of you!

Scar: It might be dangerous...

Mumbo: We are almost there but I can teach you how to send him to the temple if you want to be sure.

Scar: Uh, yeah that sounds good.

Mumbo: It's a simple incantation.

*Mumbo whispers in your ear, you akwardly repeat it and the rescued sacrifice us gone*

Scar: Is he ...ok?

*Mumbo nods and begins walking once more*

*Soon you make it to a clearing and the man comes to greet you*

Sacrifice: Oh saviour! You have arrived! I was worried!

Scar: You can call me Scar-

Sacrifice: Of course, everything you want!

*It's a bit akward, you aren't really used to someone being like this with you but you convince the new follower to help you gather some wood and with Mumbo's help the two of you manage to build a rudimentary kitchen and sleeping bag for him*

*it takes two days for Mumbo to approach you.*

Mumbo: You'll have to venture out into the land of the first god soon.

Scar: For resources? I know we don't have much but-

Mumbo: That too, but also to release the chains of The One Who Watches. You'll have to defeat all 4 bishops.

Scar: I have to fight the gods!?

Mumbo: Yes... Luckily you are also have the power of a god now thanks to that crown, even if it was just lended to you.

Scar: I don't feel that powerful though...not like them...

Mumbo: You will, it takes a while to gather power. And it takes followers as well, the more you have the faster you'll gain power.

Scar: And to gather more followers...

Mumbo: You have to venture into the lands of the bishops, yes.

*You sigh and after some preparations say goodbye to your follower before making your way into the forest*

*Near the path is a stone tablet. You can, with a bit of effort because of your dyslexia, manage to read a message:*

Entering the domain of Solidarity. Bishop of law and chaos. Lord of spring and forest. Heretics will be exterminated.

*Stone and wood and gold are all very important...but food and medicinal plants are too... Mumbo also suggested trying to get more followers so that is an option as well*

I wanted to ask, what's your take on recovery!au (unless you intend to cover it in your fic)? In the universe, where Jimmy happens, but the crew somehow survives. Everyone is traumatised, Anya is pregnant, Curly is disabled (could he even be able to afford disability aids? Pony express in no more, would they even be paid a sufficient compensation?). There is also a question of p*lice investigation (or whatever agency is responsible for space crimes), even more trauma... Man, it's bleak.

I like them sad but for emotional and physical recovery reason rather than all the actual legal stuff that would ensue.

I like when Swansea relapsing is explored and Daisuke losing a little bit of his light. I am clearly a big supporter of Anya and Curly remaining close friend after but I think exploring the unhealthy dynamics of the trauma bond they’d develop should be played with way more. I think it’s a bit annoying when people are on the nose about Anya telling Curly he should’ve done more, especially when he’s struggling through recovery.

I feel like people really want her to be a character to rub salt into wounds, just to give her something cathartic, but it’s just OOC for me. It’s not a kindness thing but I don’t think she wants that sort of guilt to stay with him like that? He did not do what Jimmy did, he could’ve done more to stop it but she would not intentionally try to direct what she can never take out towards Jimmy at Curly. At least when they all make it out. This is not to say she doesn’t think he shouldn’t have any remorse but she understands that no one else could have foreseen Jimmy crashing the ship or getting that bad.

I like when it gets psychoanalytic in fics with the crew. Talk about Curly finally opening up on details on how he and Jimmy were friends, have the others realize how bad Jimmy was to even Curly, not a lot of people realize that they don’t know how Jimmy was to him. Have Anya be angry and snippy, have her worry she’s becoming like Jimmy even though she could never be like him, it’s that fear though, that she is owed that cathartic release and may take it out on others in some selfish subconscious desire to reclaim control for herself. Have her actualize-herself, is med school the only option? What does she want now? Does Swansea divorce his wife, give up on the life he created because he was just following the path of a good man, one he didn’t believe? Or does he stay and use the time he has left to make it something he believes in. How is Daisuke? Is he more mature or does he lose a little light? What are his new aspirations if any? His relationship with his parents?

Ultimately, I think a recover au should really focus on just them actually getting to know each other and filling themselves. So much of their interactions were likely based on coworker dynamics first. With that out the window they are now people who can’t really move on from each other but need to move on in life.
