How Mental Retardation Treatment in Kolkata Offers New Beginnings with Hope?
Mental Retardation (MR), known as Intellectual Disability (ID), is a term we use when a child has below-average mental ability or intelligence and lacks day-to-day necessary skills for living. Children with ID/MR can do and learn new things, but they take more time than others. But with the treatment, ID can be manageable. In Kolkata, many ID cases are found. So Mental Retardation Treatment in Kolkata Offers New Beginnings with care and hope.
Table of Contents:
What is Intellectual Disability?
What are the signs & Symptoms of intellectual disability in children?
How do the Professionals diagnose intellectual disability in Children?
How Mental Retardation Treatment in Kolkata occurs?
FAQs
Final Thoughts
What is Intellectual Disability?
Children with ID are affected in intellectual functioning and Adaptive behaviors.
Intellectual function: It also represents children's IQ (intelligence quotient); doctors measure it through IQ tests. If a child's IQ level is below 70 to 75, it refers to Intellectual Disability. A mentally sound person's average IQ score is 100, but most people score 85 to 115. Children with low IQ levels consider delaying everything, like understanding, making decisions, and solving problems.
Adaptive behaviors: If a child has low Adaptive behaviors, then it hampers day-to-day life, such as poor communication skills, can't interact appropriately with others, and unable to take of oneself.
What are the signs & Symptoms of intellectual disability in children?
Late in every natural task like Rolling over, sitting up, crawling, or walking.
Talking late or speeches need to be clarified.
Slower in primary things like, potty training, feeding themselves, and dressing.
Lack of remembering skills.
Behavior problems like Anger flare up and misbehave, such as throwing things.
Illogical thinking and low problem-solving skills.
Unable to do actions as per consequences.
ID also attracts other health problems, such as motor skills impairment, mood disorders (anxiety, OCD, autism, etc.), and hearing or vision problems.
How do the Professionals diagnose intellectual disability in Children?
If children have physical abnormalities, then doctors refer them for various tests, like blood, urine, brain imaging, and electroencephalogram (EEG), to confirm these are coming from genetic issues.
Doctors ask for those tests to confirm certain neurological disorders and hearing problems to discover the exact causes of children's developmental issues. If no reason is found, they will proceed with the next step, formal testing.
Formal testing has three key factors; a conversation with parents, a test of intelligence and adaptive behaviors, and observing the child. An intellectually disabled child has both problems the IQ and adaptive behaviors. If only one presence between the two is not considered ID.
After diagnosing the ID, the professionals will determine your child's strengths and weaknesses; that way, they will support your child to succeed at home, school, and community.
How Mental Retardation Treatment in Kolkata occurs?
Mental Retardation (MR) is not a critical health disease, even not an anxiety, depression, alike mental disorder. Though there is no cure for ID, it can be treatable. Children with ID/MR can do many things but take more time and effort than other children. There are no certain medications for ID. With the help of Multimodal / Combination therapy, they can be manageable.
Treatments include
Early Interventions
Behavior Modification Therapy
Speech Therapy
Special education
Occupational Therapy (OT)
Developmental Therapy
Medications
Anti-depressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and many more medications are available in the market and are used widely among children with ID for managing their conditions.
FAQs:
Does mental retardation have a cure?
No, there is no cure for mental retardation, but it can be treatable and manageable with the help of Multimodal / Combination therapy and medications.
How does mental retardation happen?
There is no exact cause of mental retardation. But professionals can suspect probable causes, like premature birth, brain injury during labor, or pregnancy. Some refer to the underlying reasons are chromosomal deficits (Down syndrome), inherited disorders, brain injury or infection, problems in metabolism, low birth weight, drug or alcohol intake during pregnancy, and the numbers go on.
Can people with mental retardation learn new skills?
Though there is no cure for ID, proper treatment can manage their symptoms. Also, people with MR/ID can learn new things, but they take more time than others, or they can learn differently than other kids. So yes, they can develop new skills.
Final Thoughts:
So, as we know, there is a solution when there is a problem. Similarly, if there is a disease, there is a treatment. So, with the help of Behavior Modification Therapy, Speech Therapy, Special education, Occupational Therapy (OT), and Medications can lower their ID symptoms and live a good life.

-- A critical/practical Study, Advanced Psychology and Education, Special Needs are broached, mental disabilities, handicaps, Social Issues / Sociology / Society Studies. Special Needs Children.
The preface begins: The purpose of this publication is to present an approach for building a total educational program as the teacher views and guides the individual with retarded mental development from the time he enters a special pre-primary program until he leaves at the end of a special senior high school program. This approach originates in each pupil's design for growth and development in a given home-school-community environment. To the extent that all concerned can observe the strengths and limitations--and transmute the understanding of thos observations into positive experiences in an expanding program--to that extent it is possible for the individual to find himself and his place in the environment where he can live. An invaluable resource.

Prenatal infections in the mother, such as cytomegalovirus and rubella.
Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a type of cerebral palsy.

Every Visit Makes Me Introspect
I remember Navkshitij ever since my memory can take me back. I remember the long meetings that Dr. Neelima Desai (Neelima aunty to me) and my mother Kanaka used to have in our house in Pune. As a child I used to think, Wow, this idea is amazing.
I have been exposed to social work, but only through seeing Neelima aunty working I learnt that so much effort goes into running an organization this huge. Hats off to her and the entire Navkshitij team for helping this organization grow so beautifully over the years. Even now it amazes me how each caregiver is so patient.
I always wondered how I could help Neelima Aunty. When I was old enough I remember helping aunty deciding the colour combinations for the uniform. It was a small act but I was so thrilled to be doing something for Navkshitij.
I don’t think I have ever seen a social organization address so many issues such as environment preservation, traffic discipline and nationalism.
I’ve been to Navkshitij so many times and I love spending time there. Whenever I go, it’s a reset button for me. Every visit makes me introspect. How can I be a better human being?
I’ve learnt from Navkshitij Friends never to give up on oneself. It’s inspiring how the special friends encourage each other to push their boundaries. They cheer, encourage and show compassion to the others around them. They are so grounded. This is something we lack today. We are all so focused on getting others down that we have forgotten Humanity and Love.
Thank you, Navkshitij, for the wonderful experiences and lessons.

Hypothyroidism, also called underactive thyroid, is when the thyroid gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormones to meet your body’s needs. Thyroid hormones control the way the body uses energy, so they affect nearly every organ in your body, even the way your heart beats. Without enough thyroid hormones, many of your body’s…

Understand, Assimilate, Forgive: A Friend Shows Us How
ANAND, a special friend with Down’s syndrome, is a quiet boy with a good sense of what is fair and unfair. One day, at my weekly meeting with Friends, he complained about Friend Chaitanya who did not allow him to take solar water first. “I am very angry today because I thought it was unfair,” he told me. We discussed the issue at length. Chaitanya explained that he wanted the water for his friend who was ill and therefore took the water first. He said he had later realised his mistake and had apologised to Anand that morning itself. But Anand was still upset. However, at the meeting, he listened to Chaitanya’s explanation patiently. At the end of the discussion, I asked him whether he was happy with the explanation and he said, yes. The two shook hands immediately.
Both Anand and Chaitanya are Caregiver Assistants and they have the responsibility of helping the caregivers run their home well. Immediately after the weekly meeting with friends, we have our monthly meeting with caregiver assistants, caregiver coordinators and assistant manager. At the start of the meeting, Anand told me that after hearing Chaitanya’s explanation he thought it was okay for him to have taken the water first because he was helping another friend. “Now I am feeling peaceful. I am not angry.” He forgave his friend and it helped him to release his own anger. I felt so good that he could voice his trouble and was able to work on it. Life will be so beautiful for us too if we also practice forgiveness on a regular basis. https://navkshitij.org/understand-assimilate-forgive-a-friend-shows-us-how
