what is an osce?

hii! OSCE stands for Objective Structured Clinical Examination. They’re practical exams that we have to sit in medical school. We’re given between 6 and 15 (usually but it can vary) stations, each with an unknown clinical scenario that you wouldn’t have seen before. this could be something like “a patient has presented to the GP with shortness of breath. Take a full history and find out what’s going on” or “you’re in the ED and called to review a patient with chest pain. Perform a relevant examination and begin management.” There might even be practical skills like taking blood, putting in an NG tube or carrying out basic life support (these are done on dummies though).

Each station has a simulated patient (usually just an actor) and an examiner and you’re given about 8-10 minutes to complete the task and answer any questions the examiner has for you. You get marked on how you perform, what you do, how you treat the patient, if they think your clinical knowledge is good etc. They’re basically a way of testing what you’ve learnt on placements and whether you can be a safe and competent doctor.

Sunny mornings 🌤️ vs rainy afternoons ☔️

Taking a break at my local cafe, we’re moving next week so I’m trying to psych myself up for a cross-country UHaul trip. Lots of little things to do and I’ve been feeling overwhelmed even though I have no more med school stuff to do until graduation day.

I have opened tumblr for the first time in like 3 months and I just want to say thank you for all the asks and lovely messages whilst I've been MIA!!! The fun thing about having a literal tumour in your hand, besides the, you know, pain and suffering and the horrifying reality of living with disfigurement, is that my medical university may cause me bigger problems than the damn tumour because of it's ridiculous policies

Forget the fact that I'll have to redo every class I miss because of literally having surgery, during fixed times I cannot choose

Forget the fact that I'm supposed to get discharged from the hospital after said surgery and immediately make a 3 hour trip to another city

They might not give me the damn document that allows me to claim points for the re-done classes if they fucking feel like it, which means I will have to put like 15 hours of work for a worse gpa

(to explain, the punishment for not being in class for an "inappropriate reason" - which is literally any reason except for like death, and even then the death has to be of someone close enough or else it doesn't count - is that you can't claim your points for your work, which, in a school system based on said points, is essentially a a very large "FUCK YOU" to the person who skipped class, and you can't just not do the work either because then you can get expelled)

(yes, this made having to go through pre-op, which required things like blood tests which could be taken only in the morning, real fucking complicated)

(I had to go through a lot of shenanigans, which meant I technically visited lectures I never stepped foot on because I was too busy with the tumour thing)

(this is not even the worst education experience in my field or in general if you can believe it, and by a bunch of other parameters my school life is my easier than my peers's lives are)
