Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone Abridged Review
Originally posted January 30th, 2016
A simple story with interesting characters.
Tumblr media
Dead Zone Abridged is the toughest part of the series I’ve had to review yet, because I can’t come to a particularly clear conclusion on how well it works. Part of the problem is that the source material here contains the basis of the tropes present in the following films, so it feels similar to the other films, while being slightly off kilter from them.
The source material also demands that over sixty-percent of the film be spent in the same location, Garlic Jr.’s castle, which is certainly unlike any of the other films, as they have us hopping around to locations that don’t look exactly the same as each other. When you combine that with the low budget the original animators had to work with (I assume, based on part of the final fight taking place in a pitch black room for no apparent reason), the film aesthete in me has a very hard time wrapping her head around the idea that this could ever qualify as more than “decent.”1
It is pretty good though, thanks to Team Four Star’s decisions that inject comedy and make up for the weaknesses inherit to the story. For example, from the very beginning, we’re introduced to Piccolo’s desire to build a bitchin’ castle, and that combined with Goku’s quest for the meadery gives us a decent reason to accept the film staying in the castle longer than we might’ve liked otherwise (I’m of the opinion that they’re still in the castle too long, but I’d concede that it’s probably an arbitrary preference). It unfortunately isn’t as clever as the conceits that fuel their other films,2 but it’s enough to justify this significant flaw.
Team Four Star also leans into the setting of the film pretty heavily, taking full advantage of their story being set before any they’ve already told (save for “Episode of Bardock”). The three things they particularly capitalize on is Goku’s rivalry with Piccolo, Piccolo’s relationship with Kami, and Kami’s relationship with the world.
Goku’s rivalry with Piccolo is sold best near the end of the film, when the two of them are taking on a ‘roided out Garlic Jr. As they argue over which one of them is responsible for his perceived defeat, the tension grows as Piccolo becomes angry with Goku for his arrogance, and Goku grows angry at him for refusing to respect him.
Their fight is only stopped by Garlic Jr.’s summoning of the Dead Zone,3 and it’s pretty clear from their intensity that they would’ve gone on to destroy each other otherwise. This moment alone makes the film worth watching, and it has me convinced that, at least as far as the Abridged series goes, Piccolo and Goku are much more interesting as enemies than friends (Gohan and Piccolo’s friendship, of course, is still excellent).
The way Piccolo’s relationship with Kami is addressed serves primarily to establish that Piccolo’s death guarantees Kami’s death, and either one of their deaths will result in the Dragonballs becoming useless. The interesting way their relationship is explored is within Garlic Jr.’s dialogue, however, and this is how Kami’s relationship with the world is explored as well.
Throughout the film, Garlic Jr. refers to Kami as a god, and speaks of how he and the rest of the world have prayed to him and received no answer. This hints at a darkness within Kami that we both have yet to see explored and see explored plainly through Piccolo, who Garlic Jr. refers to as a demon. With it being made clear that Piccolo and Kami’s life forces are connected, it begs the question of just how these two are related to each other, and the implications of a “demon” and a “god” being so closely intertwined is unsettling enough to pique my curiosity, even though it’s something that Team Four Star refrains from explaining in this film.
Rating: 4/5

Stray Observations
1I’d find it odd that this hasn’t happened elsewhere in the series, but KaiserNeko does a fantastic job of keeping things visually engaging.
2Revenge of Cooler’s conceit is letting us explore Freeza’s character through another lens, Christmas Tree of Might’s is in the title, and Lord Slug’s is that we’re tired of being stuck on Namek for so long (and that we miss seeing Piccolo kick some ass).
3This is thematically fitting, as Goku and Piccolo only became friends because the Saiyans, a seemingly unstoppable force, came to earth. Though that could be more accurately attributed to the specific act of Piccolo sacrificing himself to save Gohan, depending on your perspective.
I officially shake my fist in frustration, because goddamn, the film canon is confusing. I mean, first “Episode of Bardock” was a fever dream, and now Dead Zone is just a script Krillin wrote for Nappa? If Team Four Star wanted to capture the frustration of the films not making any goddamn sense, then they have certainly succeeded, and I am glad to be dumbfounded. With that said, their decision to adapt them out of order adds to the confusion, but they have good reason for adapting each film when they do, so I can forgive them for that.
Mr. Popo: “Drama Queen!”
Gohan’s side-eye as he received the books was fantastic.
Garlic Jr.: “Oh god, your father’s Goku.”
Gohan’s behavior in this film makes it abundantly clear that he indeed is the son of Son Goku.
Garlic: “Make me immortal!” Eternal Dragon: “Oh, really? I can’t remember the last time someone nutted up and asked for that. Congrats! Can’t wait to hear how you f*** this up.”
Goku: “I am Son Goku, and your name sounds yummy.” Garlic: “So I’ve heard.”
Krillin Owned: No official count increase, because confusing movie canon, but I think being pissed on by Gohan is grounds for an honorary point added to the count. Though I’m tempted to remove one since he had a column of stone dropped on his head and survived.
Badass Piccolo is best Piccolo.
Okay, I know Garlic brings up a clever counter to Kami’s attempt to suicide bomb him, but I think that it raises an important question: does immortality guarantee indestructibility in the Dragonball universe? Or does it simply mean that you’ll live forever regardless of how much your body is damaged (or torn apart/separated)? Because if it’s the second option, it sounds like a pretty bum deal to me.
Goku: “Piccolo, it’s not a competition. I already won. :3c”
Piccolo: “This victory is mine!” *gets shot* Goku: “You want I should take a turn?” Piccolo: “Shove it, Goku.”
Nappa: “Why did you write yourself getting peed on?” Krillin: “The better question is, how much are you gonna pay me to get peed on?” Nappa: “You’re gonna go far in this business.”
Nappa may not know why Garlic summons the Dead Zone, but it seems perfectly in character for me. Finishing off his enemies in the same way Kami destroyed his father is classic poetic justice (or revenge).

1. Unraveling the Mystique of Honey Mead
Before embarking on your quest to shop for the finest honey mead, it's essential to understand what makes this drink so extraordinary. Mead is a versatile beverage, with styles ranging from sweet to dry, and flavors that can be infused with herbs, fruits, and spices. It's often likened to wine but is distinct in its creation process, relying on honey as its primary fermentable sugar. As you explore various meads, you'll discover a wide array of taste profiles, each with its own distinct charm.

To find the best honey mead for sale, begin your journey by researching reputable meaderies and producers. Look for established brands with a track record of creating exceptional mead. Many meaderies have online stores, allowing you to conveniently browse and purchase their meads from the comfort of your home.
3. Exploring Different Mead Styles
As you venture into the world of honey mead, you'll encounter a variety of styles to choose from. Each style offers a unique taste experience. Some of the common styles include:
a. Traditional Mead: Pure and unadulterated, made with just honey, water, and yeast, resulting in a balanced, honey-forward flavor.

Commercial Meadery Review
I finally had the opportunity to try mead from The Colony Meadery, which is currently the closest commercial meadery to where I live. While I don’t think it’s one of my favorite meaderies, their mead had some really great points!
Let’s start with some background.
In my tasting, I sampled this meadery’s “Straight No Chaser” (their flagship mead) and “Woofiedog” (hopped) flavors.
Let’s start with Straight No Chaser. It’s 13% ABV, but amazingly smooth. You can hardly taste the alcohol in it, but not by overpowering it with sweetness. This mead feels like a cool summer drink that you’d enjoy with friends in your backyard. It’s refreshing, sweet but not too sweet, and has the alcohol content that you’d expect from a robust ferment. I would certainly recommend this flavor to any mead enthusiast, and also to anyone new to meads.
Let’s move on to Woofiedog. I must first preface my opinions with the disclaimer that I do not like hops, nor beer. Unless it’s coffee or tea, I am not a fan of bitter drinks. There seems to be a trend in commercial meaderies to include a hoppy mead in their product lineup, and Woofiedog is a good representation of this. It has the smoothness of Straight No Chaser, but the hops introduce their distinct bitterness to the mix. The bitterness interacts with the sweetness to produce a drink very similar to a sweet, non-carbonated IPA. As I mention, I’m not a fan of beer. It’s no surprise that I don’t particularly care for this mead. But let me say that this mead would be really good for those of us who do like both mead and beer, and as a bridge for beer drinkers who want to try mead.
Now to the reason why I support The Colony Meadery, but can’t include it in my My Favorite Meaderies series: price. The bottles from which I drank were 375ml in volume, which is significantly smaller than the wine industry standard of 750ml. Unfortunately, the price of this mead does not correspond to the reduced volume. Straight No Chaser and Woofiedog bottles cost $13.99 each (~3.7cents/mL). For reference, 750ml bottles of Honeymaker's flagship and hopped varieties are $17.49 each (~2.3cents/mL). Though one could say that market forces let The Colony Meadery set their price since they are the biggest name in mead in the Philadelphia area, I would argue that they should increase their bottle size or decrease their per-bottle price to increase accessibility. The steep price may be a deterrent to people who want to try mead for the first time.

Seattle's Lucky Envelope announces their barrel-aged Imperial Porter, American Pilsner, Honey Cinnamon Cream Stout, & Yuzu Sour.
As we move past the halfway part of March, the men and women of Seattle’s Lucky Envelope are happy to remind you they have fresh beer and some upcoming releases.
Currently at the taproom
Starting with Westland Whiskey Barrel-Aged Imperial Porter, the brewers sought to create a Barrel-aged Imperial Porter, aged in (previous use) Westland barrels. Distributed between several barrels, this Imperial Porter has aged, been reviewed, and when combined has resulted a harmonious blend.
Described as having notes of “ … cocoa, sweet booziness, oak, and vanilla” this one is not to miss, while they still have quantities available.
Released during the thawing-out period in Seattle, Lucky Envelope revisits the classic American Pilsner with L.E. Lite Pilsner.
Basically, the brewery would like you to think of a beer that is triple-hopped, light, “crushable”, and with notes of fresh baked bread, unsalted crackers, but with a touch of mellow sweetness.
Coming Soon
Starting this Friday, Lucky Envelope is happy to announce their latest cream stout, Honey Cinnamon Cream Stout.
Brewed in cooperation with Mr. B’s Meadery, this cream stout is also brewed with Saigon cinnamon and floral, softly spicy raspberry honey from nearby Robbins Honey Farm in Lakewood (Washington). The result is a cream stout that screams “Spring is here!”
Besides Honey Cinnamon Cream Stout, Lucky Envelope is set to release Yuzu Mimo-Sour.
From the mouths of the brewers.
Enjoy our newest experimental sour brewed with the gently floral Japanese citrus fruit, yuzu. Special enzymes leave virtually no residual sugar resulting in a dry and champagne-like beer reminiscent of brunch's favorite drink, the mimosa.
At 7.2% ABV (alcohol by volume), look for this one to be released March 19th as well.

Episode 46 has come and gone and someone is here for one day and gives me a damn heart attack. Just as bad as the others, I swear.
After a long night’s rest, the Nien wake up at around high noon (heh) the following day and begin to figure out what their plans will be for the next few hours or so. Caleb decides to stay on the boat while the others go into town, still attempting to recover emotionally from the previous day’s events. Jester walks in on their conversation and seems...off? Fjord and Jester talk about how each sort of...disappeared in different ways the day before. It is mostly awkward and the group joins in.
As they all speak, the realization that half of everyone blames themselves for what happened comes to the surface. Clay says that he does not think that anyone did anything wrong and that what happened just sort of happened. He believes they all did well and tells the group that they should not beat themselves up over the previous events. His speech (much more eloquently put than this summery) slowly seems to lift some of the weight off of the shoulders of the Nien. While some of it lingers, it is not as heavy.
Fjord notices several warships that are docked at the port and speaks to a nearby soldier what is happening. He discovers that the war between the EMpire and Xhorhas is getting worse. He also realizes Felderwin, a town further inland that the party passed by, was attacked by the Xhorhaus empire.
Making their way into town for breakfast, they find a meadery selling a large amount of food and spirits for the people of the port and the soldiers. Yasha eventually joins them, a bit miffed about being woken up and not invited to join, and they all discuss as to what to do after they leave. Fjord wants to visit that temple he saw in his dream, if the group is willing.
As he talks about the soldiers in town when Jester asked, Nott finds out about the town and tells the group that she is from Felderwin. Beau reveals that she grew up near in a town near. Yasha learns that her old home were the reason for the attack and seems mutely shocked.
Yasha slowly opens up that she was worried when the group disappeared. She looked across the whole room to figure out where they went. She says she does not need anything because everything she has is here now. Nott/Sam teases her and she reveals she wasn’t even sure the group wanted her to be in the group.
As this happens, back on the boat, Caleb casts alarm and his hut in his room. He examines some of the loot he got, including the sphere that has now reset itself. He examines the books and finds some new spells and a book about debate from the issues of the time before the calamity.
As the rest of the Nien come back to the ship and settle for the day, they set sail back to the sea. As they move, rain begins to fall, steadily turning into a proper storm and the crew is forced to push through it, since going around would put several days on their travel. As they force their way in, Beau talks to Jester alone and does compliment her when she says that she is a good liar, quoting her from something she had said the day before, because it takes one to know one. She reassures Jester that it is ok to be sad and that she knows what it is like to be alone as a child. She says that she admires Jester for staying creative and not angry through her loneliness, as Beau had done when she was growing up. As Beau leaves, Jester hugs her and Beau returns the affection, letting her know that she loves her.
Yasha stands atop the deck while everyone moves around, entranced by the storm. She becomes overtaken by the weather and kneels to it. She begins to go through her memories of her home. She sees a woman she once knew, both alive and dead in the flash of light. From a lovely smile and feeling to a horrifying figure and pain. Another memory, a figure and storm speaks to her of loss.  Another scene of dead bodies and her bloody sword being clutched in her hands. A red being like that of a demon calls her the Orphan Maker. The voice that spoke to her about loss tells of loss’s strength and weaknesses as the thunder swells in sound. The storm before her in her dreams being created for her.
She is brought back into reality and lightning strikes the front of the ship. Instead of broken wood, a creature of darkness with Yasha’s height appears and makes its way towards her. Wings like lightning behind it. It attacks her with no warning.
Those on the deck of the ship only see a ball of light where the creature stands. Fjord has heard tales of ball lightning, something similar to what he and others see. Yasha sees its true form. Yasha unfurls her wings and fights back.
After a strenuous battle, Yasha survives with one hit point and tells Jester about what she saw: her home, her memories, and the monster. Yasha, at Jester’s recommendation, talks to Clay about her battle. Clay asks what she is going to do now. She does not know. Clay warns her that running towards something without knowing why you are running can be dangerous but also says they will probably encounter her goal, though lost, very soon.
Yasha reflects on her memories and the fight as she reaches the deck of the ship, the rain having mostly dissipated at that point. Jester asks Yasha what made her leave her home in the first place. She said she had to leave because she did something that wasn’t “the right thing to do” according to her tribe. She says that, in her tribe they make a blood oath to the tribe and their leader, a matriarch known as the  and a new name. Her’s was the Orphan Maker and, eventually, given a mate as appointed by her home. Yasha, however, says she fell in love with a woman named Zuella, a woman not chosen by the tribe and married her. However, the tribe found out and the punishment for what they did was death. Her wife was murdered by the tribe and Yasha ran. She says she is a coward but Jester disagrees.
She admits she remembers little after she left, feeling and looking different when she woke up at the alter of the Storm Lord. She wants to be better to repay the kindness of him saving her from an unknown threat. Jester asks if he healed her heart but Yasha does not think her heart would ever be healed but she is fine with that if that means Zuella stays with her. She wants to find the grave of her wife back home and give the flowers she has collected to her.
Yasha says, after losing those she loves like Zuella and Molly, she might be unlucky or cursed and she doesn’t even believe in luck. But, Jester says that even if Molly is gone he is still with her like her lovely Zuella. Yasha thanks them for listening and asks for them to keep it quiet, to which they agree.
The ship sails forward until they spot land, three pieces of mass off in the distance and send Frumpkin out to examine the ground and water around it. After some time in the water, Frumpkin spots a tower. Nearby is some movement of humanoid bodies tangled in the seaweed. They look around but can not find any more dangers around. Fjord casts breath underwater and instructs the crew to leave if they see any danger. As they make their way down, Clay notices an aquatic like creature with humanoid appendages with one that moves like an octo-fied Frumpkin. They attack one of the creatures, killing it an alerting the others.
After the battle, Fjord sends a specter he made towards the tower to scout ahead. After some time and little event, Fjord makes his way towards the building, being spotted by something similar to a crab creature. He sends the specter inside and, as they listen, Clay hears stone, slashing and then silence coming from inside. Peaking in, three creatures of crablike proportion are spotted. Eventually, they work their way into the tower.
As they slowly work their way into tower, the cold water of the ocean floor seeps further into their body. With some bonds growing stronger at the reveal of information as others grow taut at the secrecy of others, the group nears the, foreseeable, end to Fjord’s background and his strange connection to Uk’atoa’s balls. There is something waiting within the depths of these waters, consequences of their actions and impulses left unknown until they unfold before the party. The Nien are forced to question what may lay ahead of them and what unholy secrets they may discover.
Guys, it has been a pleasure making these reviews over the last few months and interacting with you and seeing the responses you all have for recent episodes. I only recently got into the community and I feel I have been made better for it. You all are wonderful and I can’t wait to see you in the next year.
Do not forget, tomorrow is Liam’s holiday one shot! Tune in to see what shenanigans they get into. From what some of them have to say, it is very interesting.
Here’s to bright future’s, big smiles, and good times with some hell to be raised.
And, until next year, is it Thursday yet?
I love you all and hope you have a happy holidays!

INDY Daily: Journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones's Experience With UNC Isn't a Unique One
It’s Wednesday, June 9
Thank you to this week's sponsor, Durham Summer, a new annual four-day festival that showcases the contemporary cuisine, music, and independent arts of Durham. Don't miss the chance to enjoy Durham’s multicultural cuisine, restaurant and music communities, craft breweries, wineries and meaderies, as well as small businesses, local farmers, and international chef personalities. Adding to all of this will be performances by the best names in live music and entertainment.
Good morning, readers.
For our cover story this week, writer Sara Pequeño takes a look at the experiences of Black women professors at UNC-Chapel Hill and across the country and finds that, what acclaimed journalist and UNC alumna Nikole Hannah-Jones is going through with the Board of Trustees and her tenure situation right now isn't necessarily unique.
"In 2019, there were eight Black women serving as full, tenured professors at UNC-CH, and 23 tenured associate professors, a total of 31 Black women with tenure, down from a high of 32 in 2017," Pequeño reports.  "White men, on the other hand, held 337 tenured full professorships and 148 tenured associate professor positions that year — 485 tenured professors, down from a high of 535 in 2017.
At public and private universities, in North Carolina and across the country, at predominately white institutions but sometimes at HBCUs, Black professors — especially ones with other marginalized identities, do not receive tenure at the same rate as do their white counterparts."
From Sonja Haynes Stone, Director of the Curriculum of the African American Studies program at UNC and namesake of UNC's Center for Black Culture and History, who had to fight for her tenure after she was denied it in 1979, to Black women teaching at the university even today, the struggle to be recognized and valued for the expertise, perspective, and talent they bring is very real and persistent.
I'll leave you with the words of one of the eight tenured Black women on UNC faculty, Sharon P. Holland, now a distinguished professor in American Studies:
"I feel that a premier university, in a state where my family’s blood is in the soil, is missing the opportunity to remain a premier university," Holland says.  "And when I say premier, I'm not talking about status.  I'm talking about absolutely leading the way, and what we do — especially in this region and in this part of the world — what we do for our future as human beings.  It is a profound lack of vision.  People are concentrated, fixated, on what we can and cannot do, because 12 people, six people, eight people in a room have made it difficult.  That's more like the slavocracy than anything, and we need to break that legacy."

UNC-Chapel Hill’s refusal to grant tenure to acclaimed journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones is emblematic of the systemic racism chronicled in Jones's 1619 Project but Hannah-Jones's experience is not unique for Black women professors at UNC and across the country.
We spoke with the Carrboro High School seniors who started the school's Black and Brown Students Coalition.
The Carolina Review, UNC-Chapel Hill's conservative publication that's been plagued by website hacks, cyber attacks, and vandalism to its distribution boxes, needs money. The Pope Foundation has been supporting the publication in recent years and a fundraiser in September aims to fund a massive overhaul for the publication. N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Newby and N.C. House Speaker Tim Moore, whose son is a staff writer at The Carolina Review, are expected to speak at the fundraiser.
Mega-donor Walter Hussman, Jr. told The Daily Tar Heel he was concerned his "core values of journalism," which are written on the walls of the journalism school named after him, would be overshadowed by Nikole Hannah-Jones's hiring and The 1619 Project.

Durham's school board voted not to renew the contract of David Hawks, the longtime principal of Durham School of the Arts who is popular with students. DPS Superintendent Pascal Mubenga had recommended the board renew Hawks's contract. Hawks is credited for turning DSA into one of the best public high schools in Durham during his 14-year tenure.

Raleigh's City Council wants to ask lawmakers in the General Assembly for permission to move the municipal elections scheduled for October to November of 2022, giving everyone on the current council an additional year in office. Late census data due to delays from the pandemic mean city officials won't have the newest population numbers to redraw the city's council districts until September. Wake County's population has grown by 26 percent since 2010, when the last census was taken, and Raleigh's population has grown by 70,000. Council member David Cox was the lone council member opposed to moving the election to late next year.
A new study from researchers at N.C. State University finds that socially vulnerable communities have significantly higher natural gas pipeline densities and are therefore exposed to more pollution and health and safety issues.
A development group wants to build multiple 40-story towers in downtown Raleigh at the block between McDowell and Salisbury Streets as part of The Nexus project. The area is currently zoned for 20 stories but the Acquisition Group wants to go higher and will need a rezoning from the city council. The Nexus would include offices, retail, and condos.

Session 10
We debate how to figure out how to flush out whoever is creating and sending these scarecrows; we’re pretty sure fire is the answer somehow but not sure exactly how to utilise it. Kessler wants to look around to see which is the ‘headsman’s’ house?
We decide we can’t get any further in the dark (eventually) and decide to set up camp. Kessler casts Detect Magic while we set up. She doesn’t Detect anything. Melaina and Gideon and Ahleqs take watches - the first two don’t see anything - Ahleqs starts to see activity as the farm/village starts to wake up.
Tarragon notices that there’s a meadery, but we haven’t seen any hives. She finds a bee and asks it to show her its home; there is one natural hive in the woods nearby. Not enough to support a whole meadery. Suspicious, or a red herring? She wants to look in the meadery; we decide to let Kessler make some inquiries about it first.
A halfling emerges from the gift shop and puts up a sign saying “pick your own grapes for 3 silver pieces”. Gunna is suspicious. Do they mean they want him to work picking grapes, and pay them for the privilege? Ahleqs asks how you make mead out of grapes. The halfling says this is a wine and meadery; they make both. Gunna pays his silver and gets a basket, goes and picks some grapes.
Kessler is still looking for the headsman; she decides to ask a passing halfling. (It turns out she means mayor, not executioner.) The halfling goes off and gets another one called Blossom Snobeedle. This is the mayor. Kessler explains about the attacks we were asked to investigate, and asks if the halfling knows anything. Says we tracked a scarecrow back here. Snobeedle accuses the Stoutfellows - says they are suddenly flush out of nowhere (this is the farm that was attacked). Kessler makes an insight check as Snobeedle mentions scarecrows - the woman looks shifty and a bit nervous but denies all knowledge.
Melaina peeps in through the meadery window; all looks regular. She is still not convinced.
Kessler follows Blossom back to the house she emerged from - hears voices yelling from within. Sadly she rolled a poor stealth check so Blossom comes back out and asks if she can help her before shutting the door in her face.
Kessler goes back and hides again - Blossom is fighting with someone inside, saying she’s a pillar of the community, and seems outraged that she is being accused of ‘this’.
Gunna has eaten a lot of grapes by now; he makes a CON save and gets a 24. He’s doing okay - for now.
Melaina, Ahleqs and Tarragon go on a family outing to the meadery. We go to the gift shop to ask about tours. The halfling behind the desk is called Porrim; Ahleqs says he’s here to see their quaint country ways. for 20cp we can have a tour and a bottle of mead.
Gregor gives us the tour. Shows us fields with grapes (Gunna is shovelling handfuls into his mouth), the rental house, a big barn where others are stomping on grapes, then into the meadery. Explains mead making process and gives us a bottle of mead. Tarragon asks where they get their honey; he says they buy it in. Melaina insight checks him - seems legit. He offers us a pin as a memento of our stay for the low low price of 30gp. We decline.
We make a perception check - Tarragon nat 20. She and Melaina see Kessler hiding near Blossom’s house.
Blossom is talking in circles; she doesn’t deserve this, heads will roll. No new information.
There is a drinking hall behind the gift shop.
Tarragon asks about scarecrows; they’ve heard the stories about the scarecrows but the guides say they don’t know anything. Any of the other halflings on the farm could tell her something about them if she asks. Kessler joins us in the gift shop.
Ahleqs says we should go to the mead hall and have a drink to try to get info there; Gideon describes this as ‘constructive carousing’.
Ahleqs spots some halfling children pointing and laughing at Gunna and calling him piggy!
We aren’t getting anywhere. To the mead hall.
Kessler continues questioning the blonde halfling who introduced her to Blossom and rolls a nat 20. Says Blossom is furious that the Stoutfellow farm is suddenly doing so well. Kessler asks if she is angry enough to do something about it? Blonde says she’s all piss and wind, but she was talking to a lady with horns about a week ago. Kessler gives her 2gp and asks her to alert the city watch if she sees the horned lady again. She agrees.
Kessler fills us in. Gregor is asking if we want drinks - yes please! 6cp for a halfling sized mug of mead. Gunna wants a human-sized one. Rolls good persuasion - gets a big mug. The halfling kids are watching and snickering though the window, calling him a piggy. Melaina is highly amused.
Melaina sneaks over to Blossom’s house and sees her fiddling with a ring on her finger through the window; she continues to watch. Blossom goes as if to take the ring off but stops; she looks very stressed.
Ahleqs wants to talk to the locals about a lady with horns. Goes to ask Gregor; makes a persuasion check for a 13. Doesn’t know anything about a lady with horns. Rolls insight; another 13. Seems like he genuinely doesn’t know. He’s a busy man, doesn’t have a lot of time for other goings-on.
Gideon goes up to Blossom and knocks on her door. When she opens it, he grasps her hand and tells her an old man story, as he casts Identify on the ring she is wearing (it takes a minute to cast). (Gets inspiration!)
There is something very wrong and bizarre about the magic on this ring; but it is a ring of summoning. Melaina follows him in and apologises to Blossom, says Gideon is her elderly friend who has a bit of dementia. As soon as they leave, Gideon tells her what he found out.
Mr Pickles has told Ahleqs about the weave (which is the source of magic in this world); he thinks that the reason the ring was so bizarre had something to do with that. There are dead zones where magic can’t be cast and some other things that can go wrong with it.
Kessler wants to arrest Blossom, so she deputises us. Tarragon decides she hasn’t been deputised at all, thank you.
Blossom opens the door to us and Kessler says we have more information and we should go inside to talk. She looks nervous but lets us in. K. asks if there’s anything she wants to tell us. B. looks very nervous; asks how much we know. K. asks for the ring.
B. says ‘she told me not to take it off, I don’t know what will happen’. Kessler asks about the tiefling; she looks shocked. Blossom says she was promised they wouldn’t hurt anyone; didn’t know anything about killing goats.
She says that ‘they bribed that man’ to get ahead (the Stoutfellows).
Kessler asks who is the tiefling. Blossom says she showed up and offered to help. She’s from the docks? I think?
What did she want in return? Blossom says the tiefling asked for nothing. Just wanted to help. She agrees to let Kessler and Gideon cast Identify on the ring, without her taking it off. Looking for more information about its origins. They feel the same resistance as before. Definitely a ring of summoning. They also find out that if the ring is removed it will crumble and be destroyed. Mr. Pickles is watching with interest - upon this revelation, he says ‘impossible’ and disappears into thin air.
Blossom is watching us - she wants desperately to take the ring off.
We need to find this tiefling.
Kessler arrests Blossom; she goes quietly.
Apparently the tiefling knew all about the rivalry between the two farms, and just showed up offering help.
Ahleqs uses the pendant to try to re-summon Mr Pickles, but it doesn’t work.
We don’t want to leave Blossom here with the ring. She is distraught, overwhelmed. If Kessler says she’s under arrest, she’s under arrest.
Gideon asks her to relay the story one more time; Stoutfellows rose to prominence out of nowhere, it isn’t fair. The tiefling showed up offering help, Blossom was assured no-one would get hurt. He rolls insight but poorly.
Mr Pickles reappears looking frightened. Explains that the ring is enchanted with magic that shouldn’t exist - it uses the shadow weave, not the regular weave. The shadow weave was supposed to have been destroyed - it collapsed years ago. Mystra (a goddess) was killed - She sacrificed Herself to save the weave. This should have destroyed the shadow weave, but resurrected the weave. Sha is the shadow weave, but should be dead.
Can Mr Pickles help us find whoever created the ring? He says yes.
Ahleqs makes an arcana check on the ring, he rolls low but might be able to identify shadow weave magic if he senses it again.
We make religion checks - Sha is the goddess of darkness. Responsible for having made the shadow weave; a Big Bad. Dominion over old but forgotten pain, bitterness, rivalries. Linked to the void. In constant war with goddess of light.
We take the ring from Blossom’s finger; it crumbles and is destroyed. We won D&D!!
Gideon wants to do a line of ring dust. He makes a sniff check instead. Smells like burnt flesh. He sweeps the dust into a pouch - or he tries. He gets a little bit.
We hang around to see if a tiefling shows up?
Maybe we could leave some of Kessler’s stones of far speech with Blossom, in case the tiefling shows up again?
We go back to the Stoutfellow farm and check out the fields for some reason? (We play over Discord so some stuff gets lost.) Back to the scene of the latest scarecrow attack. We arrive early evening. We smell bread baking. We knock on the door to chat with the Stoutfellows and let them know what’s happened.
Their winery has suddenly taken off after they were given a good review by Zardorz Zord of the Seamaiden’s Fair. Travelling fair, goes by ships. Happens yearly like the mop. Was this rivalry engineered?
We ask if Mary Stoutfellow bribed Zord? She’s never met him; he drank their wine in Waterdeep. Tarragon insight 24 - she’s telling the truth. Will we stay another night in case the farm is attacked again? Yes.
We wait and are attacked by a tiefling who immediately KO’s Ahleqs with a fireball.
Sophie has to go to bed so we pause there…
