I don't know if u agree, but I've always felt the writing surrounding Alhaitham was a bit all over the place. He's not exactly my fav character but I never understood why the narrative frames him as the cold, individualist, empathy-lacking while showing the opposite. Alhaitham's blunt, arrogant and pragmatic attitude can be off-putting at times but they frame him as this horrible person (Kaveh's introduction made everything 100x worse) when it couldn't be further from the truth. It feels the writers can't agree what's the angle they want go for with him.

i think that alhaitham's individual character is more dimensional than it is all over the place in that he brings a very nuanced perspective to topics like community, privilege, and giftedness, but i think kaveh is ultimately what holds him back in terms of consistency because a lot of his initial characterization was contradicted in order to position kaveh as the "kind one" in comparison to him. in many ways, kaveh feels like a result of someone forgetting to actually make a character likable and scrambling at the last minute to TELL us that he's kind and good and righteous instead of showing it. his decisions during the event are no less groundbreaking or beneficial to the greater good than alhaitham's were during the archon quest, but we're all but forced by the narrative to see him as the one for all vs. alhaitham's all for one.

it's also a matter of wanting to maintain some kind of mirror/foil dynamic between them and thus needing to make them opposites in some way even though alhaitham already has other people who serve that purpose more effectively without treating him horribly. his characterization during the quests was very consistent in my eyes and the contradiction between him Saying he has individualistic motivations vs. him Doing things that benefit everyone felt purposeful. everything since then has just felt forced and done nothing for him lol

i had a dream that time travel was invented and too many people choose to travel back in time to save the titanic from sinking (the question of whether unsinking of the titanic deserved so much attention in the face of human history was the subject of both heavy academic and online discourse), which caused a rift in the space-time-continuum that led to the titanic showing up indiscriminately all over the world’s oceans and sea in various states of sinking.

this caused a lot of issues both in terms of fixing said space-time-continuum and in terms of nautical navigation, and after a long and heavy battle in the international maritime organization it was decided that the bureaucratic burden of dealing with this was to be upon Ireland, much to their dismay. the Irish Government then released an app for all sailors and seafarers so they could report titanic sightings during their journeys, even though they heavily dissuaded you from reporting them given the paperwork it caused.

anyway i woke up with a clear image of the app in my head and needed to recreate it for all of you:

My baby daughter got her adorable puffin-print dress absolutely CAKED in mud crawling around the yard and my first thought was "oh no her beautiful dress"

And my second thought was "oh huh it really WOULD be easy to unconsciously steer her away from playing in the dirt. Unlike my son, whose outfits are usually some kind of solid dark easily washed pants plus a shirt that doesn't trail in the dirt like a dress does."

Anyway something something gender roles start getting shoved on kids from literal birth, but with a little time to think about things, YOU TOO can let your children of any gender absolutely destroy their clothes in the dirt pit they're digging in your garden

Can I just say reviewing your takes about genshin especially with the desert gang and female / darker skinned characters is so refreshing?? Like genuinely you’re conveying feelings that I’ve had and never felt comfortable sharing. The way that my eyes lit up and I got so excited when AL HAITHAM offered Dehya a job? A man who is known for his clear cut judgements and no BS way of speaking/thinking/acting. For him to value dehya so much that he’d recommend her for a job at the Akademiya? Mwah.

PLEASE I'M SO TOUCHED AND I'M SO OVERJOYED THAT I COULD TAKE SOME OF THE WEIGHT OFF YOUR SHOULDERS it's a constant learning process for me too and talking about it helps me organize all those thoughts and feelings :') i feel like with a lot of current trends of tokenizing black and brown characters in the name of diversity, the instinct for people who haven't fully unlearned that white male gaze is to just point at these women and go "girlboss!" and then not really explore their dimension any further than that, unless it's related to the perpetual victimhood they attach to brownness, or unless it's related to how those women can facilitate other men's relationships.

also i need to scream about alhaitham and dehya and desert gang 24/7 but i'll put it under a cut this time to spare the masses i'm so sorry

alhaitham Really REALLY wanting to work with dehya is such a neat little thing because part of me thought it would just be a one-off thing that was never mentioned again but. i think it touched me because hearing dehya talk about it, his offer to find her a position wasn't treated as a Favor he was doing for her. like it wasn't framed as a man with privilege and power proving he's not like the others by acknowledging a black woman's talents it was just. Really Earnest? and still sensitive to both her identity and the way she wants to live her life because he makes the offer "only if she wants it."

and when you consider how badly he wants her there it shows the audience that her feelings and wants are still being put first. all of this should be considered bare-minimum imo, but i feel like in the context of two people who were just starting to build the bond that they have and otherwise might not have been so close, it felt valuable.

it just felt like this sweetly honest thing that acknowledged a black woman as capable and dependable and intelligent while still staying grounded in Her Personhood. and it stayed consistent with the entire theme of how alhaitham perceives her: a very quiet awe, especially after seeing how willing she is to put everything on the line for something that matters to her (him and desert gang)

One time I was working as a waiter at a burger joint where the fries were tossed in salt and coriander and as I was bringing food over to the table for these two huge beefy guys one of them asks what the green stuff is so I go "it's coriander" and his friend goes very seriously "he can't have coriander" and I'm thinking shit ok maybe he's allergic and guy 1 starts pulling up his sleeve to show me something and I'm thinking shit shit shit he's probably breaking out in hives rn and it's my fault but he just shows me his arm and he has this huge cursive font tattoo that just says "I fucking hate coriander"
