Wangxian Office!AU

So, I have this great MDZS Office!AU idea. I don't think I have the attention span to write it fully so I'll just post it on here, see if maybe I'll write it someday.

Wei Ying starts work at Lan Corp in some creative department, probably after getting fired from Yunmeng (if we are including all the family drama). He loves the place, loves his colleagues, but he abhors his senior (like, the direct department head). Dude's an a**hole, criticises everyone and everything for no reason, and is especially fond of the female employees.

WY hears from his colleagues that many employees have undergone sexual abuse from him before, but none of their complaints to the HR got through so most of them quit. Our boy is furious, but there's not much he can do about it as a newbie, so he keeps quiet.

But then, one of his female friends at the office gets groped in front of him. WY confronts the senior in the middle of the office in front of all the staff, and asks him to apologise to her. The guy's flustered, and very angry because no one ever had the courage to call him out before, so he first rejects the accusations violently.

Then, when he realises he is stuck, he says some pretty abnormal sexual things concerning WY to his face, thinking it'll redeem his position in the argument, but boy, was he expecting WY to deck him in the face.

The dude falls to the floor, his nose is bleeding, and he crawls back a considerable distance away from WY, gets up, makes a threat (which is weak because he sounds like a duck with the broken nose), and bolts.

WY is immediately cheered and applauded by all his colleagues, but my dude is freaking out because of the possibility of him losing his job due to this. There was no way he's going to apologise, and the HR's obviously gonna be no help. So, he does what any sane, normal person would do.

He rings up the fcking CEO.

He explains the entire thing as calmly as possible (which is not much, obviously), and the CEO actually agrees to look into it! WY is reassured for the time being, so he prays for his career, and goes to drink some coffee.

When he returns, everyone is panicking and running around, and one of his colleagues tell him, "Dude, go to the main office immediately. Hanguang-jun's here."

WY walks to the main office with shaky legs, hoping he gets to keep his job. He opens the door, and the employee who was groped publicly is already sitting there, along with two of her friends, and the senior with a badly patched-up nose.

And the most handsome man he has ever seen in his entire life, right in the middle of the office.

WY resists the urge to swoon, and bows and introduces himself.

The handsome guy (the CEO, who they called Hanguang-jun) makes him sit, lets him and the girls talk, and fires the senior within the first fifteen minutes. After he has kicked him out of the office, he gets up from his seat, and bows to all four of them and apologises for "the inconvenience and mental distress that they must have faced, and that he and the company would happily assist them in filing legal proceedings against the ex-senior office head."

Then he leaves.

WY has never been so attracted to someone in his entire life (not love yet, people, it's just a crush —he doesn't even know the guy's name yet). He immediately shoves that feeling down, because this was his boss. So he forgets about that, and thanks the great gods for letting him retain his job, and for letting him have such a great boss.

The very next day, WY is promoted as personal secretary to the CEO.

The manual was long, but it all boiled down to the same thing-- assess, capture, banish, assess, repeat. Keep the affected area to a minimum. Be proactive in protecting any device that can access the internet. Physical storage areas with names had to be up to standard (file boxes were allowed, so long as the lid was reinforced and could stand up to the particular talisman used), but anything else usually required paperwork and approval, even if it was retroactive. Things that might happen in a MDZS AU where the characters are all into history & know each other through various projects? (e.g. archivist, lecturer, works in a museum, just really into local history, has written a book, podcaster, history phd student, etc.). Brought to you by my obsession with love of history.

ohhhhhhhh you have inadvertently tapped into my other special interest, i was a history (and literature) double-major in my undergrad and then i went on to work in a historical archive for a few years before my masters program!

1. wei wuxian is a local historian who managed to get 3/4 of his undergrad history degree before dropping out of the program to write one very specific and controversial book, which is how he launches his podcast series on patreon. this is how he pays his bills.

2. jiang cheng did NOT drop out of the history program, but you'd never know it based on how his father talks about his accomplishments in comparison to wei wuxian's!!! he burnt out hard and took a job down at the municipal records office where he mostly deals with members of the public who are too into genealogy.

3. lan wangji and lan xichen are both music librarians at the local university. lan wangji also fosters rabbits; lan xichen teaches guqin lessons.

4. even with a scholarship, meng yao couldn't afford to attend the prestigious music program of his dreams and so ends up going to the state public school for records management. he and lan xichen have their meet-cute in the library elevator when they bump into each other and lan xichen drops a bunch of sheet music. their hands touch. their eyes meet. etc etc etc.

5. nie huaisang is a rare books and manuscripts expert with questionable credentials but who nevertheless is THE person to go to if you're looking to verify provenance about a specific text.

6. nie mingjue is really into civil war reenactments.

Today I randomly thought about your MDZS shoujo AU and cackled when I saw the bit with JC acting like she doesn't know WWX when she's up to shenanigans. One question though, if WWX gets in trouble for the red streaks on her hair, does NHS also get scolded for her green streaks? Or does she get away with it for reasons? 🐰💛

it's a mix of:

strategically placed tons of hairclips (that are technically not against the rules) and she has so much color on her the green streaks are quite easy to miss

strategically redirecting attention from her to WWX (it's not that hard, she is quite loud, specially when the disciplinary officer coughLWJcough is around)

Modern aus are a lot of fun and i do understand the narrative signifcance of power and class in mdzs and to preserve characterization you may find the need to replicate that in a modern story but please stop making Nie Mingjue a ceo. Why would you do that to him? Stop taking him out of his natural habitat (in the forest chopping wood with his shirt off) the office environment does NOT provide him with enough enrichment!
